Choosing Which OS To Boot By Changing BIOS Boot Order
I am choosing which OS to boot by changing the boot order in my BIOS. To me, this seems clean and simple. I built 32 bit XP on one disk, then removed that disk from my system, installed a different disk, and built 64 bit Windows 7.
When both disks are installed, I change the boot order to select the OS I want, and each OS sees and can use the files on either disk.
Am I asking for trouble here, or is this as clean as I think it is? What I want is one set of user document files which can be used from whichever OS has been booted.

How Do I Install Windows If I Can't Get Into The Bios To Set The Boot Order ?
I'm looking for some kind of boot manager program that I can use that'll install itself on the hard drive so that when I boot up it'll allow me to select from cd-rom, usb or other boot options. But I can't... I've tried for 6 hours to install windows 7 (I'm an MSDN member) on this laptop but I can't cause it doesnt seem to boot from the CD or USB, however, Hirens BOOT CD 10.0 boots from cd.A while back, I was able to install a boot manager of some type that when I booted up it allowed me to select where I wanted to boot off of (allowing me to select cd to boot off cause I couldn't change the boot order in the bios)... this laptop I have (Sony VAIO VGN-NR260E) I don't know the password for the BIOS 'cause I bought it 3rd party and I don't know his password and neither does he. So what can I do? Or does someone who has a Sony VAIO VGN-NR260E know how to reset the bios/cmos?

SATA Boot Order
Can someone advice the boot order for connected SATA Drives ? Is there a boot order ? Can it be set?I ask because I have (or should say had) a XP SATA drive and Windows 7 SATA drive both connected to SATA 1 and SATA 3 ports on motherboard - test bed system. System wouldn't start up, rebooted then options to recover or start normally. disconnecting XP drive, Windows 7 would not boot (drive letter suspected changed) and with only XP disk connected, it still wanted to boot windows 7 (I'd like an explanation of this).

Boot Order Issue
When I originally installed 7 on my dad's PC, I disconnected the other 2 hard drives (I did not want the boot selection screen popping up all the time). Everything has been working fine (he uses XP, so I use the BIOS to select the hard drive boot order when I want to boot into 7). Yesterday I disconnected the Windows 7 hard drive, so that I could clone his XP installation over to the secondary hard drive in the machine (the primary & secondary drives are 80 GB SATA units, while the Windows 7 drive is a 30 GB IDE unit). When I was finished, I shut down the machine & hooked the Windows 7 hard drive back up. For some odd reason, the machine boots into 7 no matter which drive is selected first in the BIOS boot order. I cannot figure this one out. With the Windows 7 drive disconnected, the machine boots into XP just fine. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this to happen?? I cloned the XP drive once before & did not have this problem(I do it every couple of months so that he has a complete image should the main hard drive fail).

Pre Order Upgrade Dual Boot Install Options
I currently have Vista Ultimate x64 and Windows 7 RC1 x64 running in a dual boot setup. Each OS is installed on a separate disk drive. If I preorder Windows 7 Professional upgrade ($99) will I be able to do a clean install on a partition of my choice or will it force me to clean install over my existing Vista Ultimate partition ?? I understand that I cant do an upgrade in place from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Professional. My question is will the preorder Windows 7 upgrade force to me "kill" my Vista Ultimate partition ?

Corrupt BIOS - Cannot Boot To DVD
I need help installing the OS. My BIOS is corrupt, so I cannot change the boot order to let me boot to a DVD. I can either boot to a floppy or a hard drive. I have used smart boot manager in the past to boot to CDs, but it will not let me boot to DVDs. I will either need a boot manager that is DVD compatible or an installation that is spread out over multiple CDs.

Boot Lag At Bios Logo
I have this weird issue since i installed Comodo Firewall 3.9 I start the computer, the bios logo loads up, it takes 1.5 mins (like 10 sec before) till it continues to the windows boot manager, from there on everything works fine. So far ive updated my bios, loaded the defaults without any success. I also disabled my bios "quick boot" feature, and it seems that it lags for 1.5mins at the point where it checks that everything is ok, it says something like: CPU: amd athlon 64...xxxx, thats where it takes 1.5mins, then continues to test memory etc but that took too long for me, and i ran a memtest 2 days ago without any problems. I wondered if it could be in any way possible that the firewall i installed is causing the problem, as far as i know its not officially Windows 7 compatible. Some specs that might be useful: ASUS Crosshair (Newest bios) AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ ASUS ATI EAH4850 2GB of DDR2 memory Ask if you need any other information.

Raid Boot Error After Bios Update
After flashing the bios, my computer could not find the OS. The options displayed recommended that I try to repair the OS, so I made that selection with no joy. I went into the bios setup and found that it was no longer setup for my raid 1 drives, so reconfigured. When I did this, I missed setting the SATA 4/5 to IDE and went through the process again of trying to repair the OS. Once again, that did not work. I went back into the bios and discovered my oversight, fixed it, but the computer still does not recognize my raid drives. The raid bios setup utility still shows a valid array. At this point, my assumption is that it doesn't recognize the array drive because the driver isn't loading, so I've tried to reload the drivers. The motherboard manual only describes how to do this when installing a new operating system and I do not want to lose my programs. Do you have any suggestions?

Windows 7 Default In BIOS After 30 Sec When I Boot PC
First off, Windows 7 is very cool; I might use it more than vista now that I got internet for it, but that will have to wait for a month or two. My first question is: when I boot up my comp, and I have to pick either vista or Windows 7 (I have Windows 7 on another partition), I usually leave the room while my comp is booting, so after 30 seconds the BIOS picks Windows 7 as the default OS because its first. I would really like to boot up my pc while doing something else, and I would love for the BIOS to pick Vista after 30 seconds instead of Windows 7 because I use Vista for games and such. Is there some way of doing that or do I have to sit around throughout the start up and manually pick Vista? My second question seems a little picky or over the edge, but when I boot up my comp and have to pick an OS, it prints "Windows 7" while underneath it it prints out "Microsoft Windows Vista". Is there some way to add 'Microsoft' in front of Windows 7 when Im picking in the BIOS? It doesn't look as good without the Microsoft.

Boot Manager Prohibits BIOS Access
since I've installed Windows 7 RC my fan speeds have been a little erratic so I wanted to go check out the settings in BIOS. When I reboot and the BIOS screen appears, I hit delete (as I always have when I had XP installed) but now it takes me to the Windows Boot Manager. Nothing is wrong with my keyboard because if I press nothing then Windows 7 immediately loads. Also, just to note, my BIOS has been recently flashed. I'm not sure what the problem could be. I tried pressing F1, then F2, and both brought up Windows Boot Manager. If I press a random key such as spacebar, nothing is activated and Windows 7 loads as normal. Anyone have any ideas? And sorry if this topic has already been discussed; I tried searching but didn't find anything related to it.

Changing Boot Drive Letters
Vista Ultimate 64bit / Windows 7 Ultimate RC1 64bit I successfully installed Windows 7 on a blank drive. The installation kept the drive letter "H" and name. Drive C: Is my Vista boot drive, and I'm done with it. My plan is to change it to some higher letter of the alphabet, then . Question I If I change my "G" drive (Windows 7 boot drive) letter to "C" with 'Disk Management' will all be well? Question II Will just deleting my Vista installation cause any problems with the Windows 7 installation?

Boot Error When Changing Hard Disk
I have a problem with booting Windows7 right after I changed disks. I work with removable harddisks (2 with Windows XP and now 1 with Windows 7 RC1). Working with XP is alright. Working with Windows 7 is also OK. I can startup, shut down as many times as I like. BUT, when I put a drive with XP in and startup it's OK. THEN, put the drive with W-7 in, it won't startup. Screen stays black. When starting in safe mode, the computer stops with the file "WindowsSystem32DriversClassPNP.SYS" and hangs. Then I start with the repair disk, and that says "Boot sector code for system disk partition is corrupt" Then "Boot sector repair" and the drive is OK again. I myselve think it is because Windows 7 sees a different harddrive in the BIOS. Any idea what I can do?

Win 7 Wont Boot After Changing Active Partition
i have three partitions. P1) 1 logical with windows 7 RC, P2) 1 primary and system, (not clean install) with windows 7 7600, and P3) 1 primary with windows 7 7600, (formatted partition before installed). my problem happens when i tried to set the active partition from "P2" to "P3" using EASEUS. I used "P1" while doing this. after restarting, my machine won't boot. It shows the manufacturer logo, and then followed by a black screen with a flashing cursor on the upper left corner, doing nothing. i let this stand for ten mins but, still, nothing happens. is this normal? i also noticed the manufacturer logo showing a little longer than usual. after 10mins, i decided to restart my machine but the same thing happens. i managed to make a repair disc before this happen. so, i boot in to the repair disc. i tried startup repair but nothing changed. i tried setting the active partition again using CMD. i also tried system restore to "P1" which i used to open EASEUS. and it also failed. any ideas what went wrong? and how i can fix it?

Boot Hangs When BIOS Doesn't Detect All USB Devices
First, on my current setup, to choose which OS to boot, I will set the boot device priority to the hard drive containing the OS in want.Error: I can systematically know (but is still random) when the problem will occur. When Windows 7 boots up and the BIOS doesn't detect all the USB devices plugged in, the boot will hang. It won't go anywhere and I see the HD LED stuck on. Once this happens, I'm screwed until I do the fix mentionned below (even if the restart causes the BIOS to find all USB devices).That means that I have to see that the BIOS detected the following for a successfull bootup: 1 keyboard, 1 mouse, 2 hubs *2 storage devices ** The two hubs and storage devices are from my Dell 2408 WFP which has two USB plugs and a memory card reader. Fix: I'll switch the boot priority to the XP hard drive and boot into Windows XP. I'll restart and set the boot priority to the Windows 7 hard drive. If all USB devices appear then it'll proceed to boot into Windows 7. Else, it's rince and repeat.However, predicting if the USB devices will all show up in the BIOS is random.XP Pro doesn't have a problem with any of this and will boot up without any issues. Also, once in XP Pro SP3, all USB devices and memory card readers from the 2408WFP will work even if they weren't detected by the BIOS at boot.I'm running a Pentium D on a P5Q-E with BIOS 1703, 2GB DDR2 8500 RAM...

Unable To Proceed With Dual Boot VHD - Boot Configuration Issue
I've done this before, and everything "just worked" but for some reason setting up a VHD dual boot with Windows 7 this time is stalling. I create the VHD, no problem I Install the image form sourcesinstall.wim no problem I add an entry to the boot config with bcdedit. boot the new image and everything looks good. It goes through the whole adding devices phase and then stops with a dialog box saying: Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed" What did I miss?PS I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate. and the WIM that on the DVD iso from MSDN sourcesinstall.wim

Boot Menu Doesn't Show Up - XP And Win7 Dual Boot
I have XP (x86) installed on one partition. Last night I installed Windows 7 (x64) on a separate partition. Anytime I had tried this in the past, using Vista, it always detected the Windows XP partition, and gave me a boot menu with "Earlier Version of Windows" option to boot to. This is not so with Windows 7. How can I get the boot menu to show both options, to boot to XP or to Windows 7?

Dual Boot And Vista Boot Error Winload.exe
I installed Windows 7 on a partitioned harddrive with vista on the other half. After the installation i have my boot menu with: Windows 7 Windows Vista Windows vista still works but when i try and load windows 7 i get a boot error message: FILE windowssystem32winload.exe Status: 0xc0000428 info: windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling a number of times, trying the 32 and 64 bit version, and setting the partition to active... with zero results. Ive been googling my problem for days and haven't found a single thing that has been useful. Please help me out if you have heard of this problem happening or have any idea why it is happening.

I have the same problem as I saw several times in this Forum with the german version. Windows 7 DVD FATAL BOOT ERROR] CDBOOT: Cannot boot from CD - Code: 5. But I think not this is a basic issue on the hardware. About I can boot and install von different other DVD OS and install, i.e. Vista, Windows Server 2008, XP. So I think basicly the issue is to find in the iso file. The issue can related by download and/or burning or previously on creating the iso file. I had 3 time try to redownload the iso file, and burning more then 5 DVD on -DVD nothing is working. Also I don't think that Microsoft wants that older PC with had the minimum requements didn't can upgrade to windows 7, so they have to look into this issue. I hope a solution will posted soon.

Boot Messages Dont Show At Boot / Post Time
Because of this I cant select which system to boot on my dual boot system. The display lights up only after Windows 7 has booted. However, the monitor shows all boot messages when plugged into my XP SP3 desktop so I know the monitor is not the issue. Problem is, I now have a new computer build, ASUS P7P55D-E mobo. My video card is now a Sapphire Radeon HD 4670. I had the same missing boot messages problem with a previous video card which I already RMAed so it is hard for me to point to a defective card. I am using a DVI-D cable which is factory attached to my monitor. To try and understand my situation, I tried an HDMI cable to my plasma TV with the same results. I.E. No boot messages. I called ASUS to make sure there is not a BIOS setting that might be wrong. They say the MB is plug and play and there are no setting that would affect monitor operation. The sapphire website has a support page that deals with this issue. It says to update my video cards BIOS. Problem is, I am already at the latest firmware point. The next item they say to check is that I might have the "incorrect monitor type selected in windows". I have tried to load in the Monitor type IBM_T55D.INF file to replace the "Generic PnP Monitor". The Generic has a driver date of 2008. This did not work. Win7 says: The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with windows for x64 based systems. Again, a connected 25yo VGA monitor is fine and I see all the boot messages. What should I do to get my LCD moni working?

Boot From Win 7 Option Gone From Boot Menu After Re-installing XP Professional
I am hoping there is a simple solution that is eluding me, which someone knows to save me re-installing Windows 7. I had Windows 7 installed on my first disk âEâ drive and Windows XP Professional on my âCâ drive (both partitioned) and all my data on a 2nd hard disk (âDâ) and all worked perfectly. However since I've "re-installed Windows XP" I can no longer access Windows 7, as it is no longer on my boot menu. Basically I need to know is there a way to get Windows 7 back in my boot menu so I can access it again without having to re-installing Windows 7 hopefully.

Blue Screen - Can't Boot, Bad Boot Command
I did a fresh install of W7 RC yesterday and it was running great. This morning I go to turn my comptuer on and a blue screen saying "cant boot, bad boot command" or something along this lines. I tried to repair and system restore and neither work.. I have no idea what to do..

Boot Manager Missing / Boot From USB Drive
For some odd reason, after doing some changes to my partitions in Windows 7 and restarting my computer, I got the ol' "BOOTMGR is missing" message. I have the Windows 7 Repair Disc image file and a 4GB USB Flash Drive, but, sadly, no CDs. Is there any way that I can put the image file onto my USB Flash Drive and boot from it with my Acer Aspire X1200 desktop computer?

Does Boot Performance Monitoring Event Get Logged At Every Boot ?
Does the Boot Performance Monitoring Event (EventID 100) get logged at every boot or is it only when Windows detects a problem and logs a warning e.g. "Driver x took longer to intialize, resulting in a performance degradation in the system startup process"? Is there a way to force it to log every boot so I can see the boot statistics?

Dual Boot System Problem From Cold Boot
I'm running RC1 Build 7100 in a dual boot situation with Vista Home premium. They are in seperate partitions of the same physical hard disk. Vista was installed first (first partition), and 7 in the second partition.When booting from a power off situation the computer stalls when loading the boot manager - ie no os choice appears (as it was installed second w7 is the default). A hard reboot(power/reset switch)Â is required in order to enter the boot manager(sometimes more than one). If it is just a restart to reboot, the problem does not happen (ie boot manager loads ok every time).No compression or encryption is enabled in either.
