Disk Order Keeps Changing On Reboot?
Aug 14, 2009
I recently setup Win 7 RC on a machine with 2 internal hard drives. I have windows and a data partition on the first drive (as C and D) and an extra data partition on the 2nd drive (as E).What I have found is that when I start the machine, the two drives seem to be randomly allocated as disk 0 or disk 1, it is not fixed. When I look at the bios, Sata drive 1 (C & D) is always the first drive and Sata drive 2 (E) is always the second drive (although I then need to reboot after checking the bios, so I can't rule out something strange going on in the bios?)

So, I have a disk with Windows 7 installed on the 3rd partition of that disk. I want to move that installation to the first partition of the disk.Repartitioning and boot settings aside, is there a way to do that? (besides using sysprep)Last time I tried that, windows would load slowly and after ''Preparing your desktop'' screen it would just show the one-color desktop, no icons, no explorer shell loaded.Alt,Ctrl, delete works, for running ''explorer'' from task manager, but computer, control panel or anything system-related does not open, instead it pops up an error window with, (e.x.)''{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}'' not found.

I have a Acer laptop which had a corrupt Windows installation, so I couldn't boot from the hard drive. The user doesn't have recovery discs and the Alt F10 Recovery option wasn't available, even though the hidden recovery partition is there PQSERVICE.In order to get to the files, a copy of Windows XP Pro was installed, but it won't activate - that that isn't a problem for me as I will remove it before the 30 days.I was given a recovery disc set designed for another computer, but - although it didn't work - the next time I booted the laptop it ran the eRecovery program and restored Windows 7 onto it, which is fantastic !!My problem is that the system is still booting to Windows XP which is on the D partition, and not to Windows 7 which is on the E partition. There is another partition called C called "SYSTEM" but it contains nothing apart from a hidden Program files folder !How do I tell the computer to boot from the recovered E partition so I can use Windows 7 and create the Recovery discs needed ? Then I can remove the Windows XP installation that I don't want or need.

In graphic programs, explorer, etc when I right click I get a drop down box showing "rename". Well right above that is "delete" and I'm frequently getting the two mixed when clicking, though I don't usually actually delete cause I catch that first. Is there a way to seperate those and reorder the drop down list so they are farther apart. It gets to be a nuisance sometimes when I am rename picture files.

I am choosing which OS to boot by changing the boot order in my BIOS. To me, this seems clean and simple. I built 32 bit XP on one disk, then removed that disk from my system, installed a different disk, and built 64 bit Windows 7.
When both disks are installed, I change the boot order to select the OS I want, and each OS sees and can use the files on either disk.
Am I asking for trouble here, or is this as clean as I think it is? What I want is one set of user document files which can be used from whichever OS has been booted.

I have dozend of idendical PCs - same mainboard, vga, HDD, LAN, RAM .. all is the same
instead of installing each PC manuell I setup one PC and use Acronis or Ghost to DNA copy the hard disk sector by sector
for xp64 all is working like a charm - after clone I set IP and PC name and that it
for Windows 7 prof. I do the same but my PC randomly reboot within 3min to 40min
I have
-no hint in event log (expect impropper shutdown)
-stoped most services
-killed all task
-no bluescreen, popup, error message
-"disable reboot on system failur" do not affect
-disabled all onboard hardware bios and disabled non importent devices
-lastest drivers (or factory drivers)
-disable all "energy save" options
-installed all Windows 7 updates and fixes
-Windows 7 boot without problems
-common up to date hardware
only "save mode" is stabil and not reboot (within 12 hour tested)
I install Windows 7 -> plug disk to other PC (new hardware found message about HDD) -> pc permanent reboot randomly within 3 min -> disk back to source PC -> all fine
I have no clue what to do.

I do a fresh install of Windows 7 and I have purchased a new hard drive as well as tried it on 2 others. After I do the install odd things happen like long pauses when opening windows like control panel, IE and others. The real trouble begins win I reboot the Pc it then runs a check disk and finds and removes errors. Each time it reboots, check disk and loads windows it takes longer and longer until windows will not boot. I've tried loading all the drivers and none of them. I loading Windows 7 via the disk.

My Windows 7 needs to getting past a blue screen at start-up after I restarted during a slow diskcheck I scheduled. The screen suggests disabling or uninstalling any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. It says to run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart the computer. I already tried safe mode but even that gives me the same blue screen. I assume the computer wants me to continue the disk check it started, but how? Restarting doesn't continue the disk check because it's been canceled with ESC. Is there any way for me to enter a command prompt so that I can type CHKDSK /F? I just want to cancel any problems causing this blue screen, whether that means forcing a disk check somehow or turning it off somehow. The stop number is 0x00000024.

I'm trying to install Windows 7 Home Premium on an old underpowered Dell Dimension XPS T700r with a P3 chip running at 700 MHz, 768 Mb Ram, and an old ATI Rage Pro 128 display adapter. It runs XP Pro just fine. All seems to be going well as Setup copies and expands files until the first reboot, when I receive "Disk Read Error, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart". This occurs using several different hard drives of sufficient capacity. It also occurs when I try the installation from a flash drive after mounting the Windows 7 ISO on Virtual Clone Drive from within XP. I've tried to install Windows 7 Starter but it, too, chokes at precisely the same point. I've tried all this on an similar machine with comparable but different components. Same result with all these attempts.I know I'm try to push the envelope in a downward direction here; Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor issues the standard warnings on processor speed, ram, and display adapter, advising that any installation will be sluggish and that the graphics adapter will not support Aero.

This all started whenever I wanted to change my text size different by changing my DPI settings. What I did was right click, go to screen resolution, and clicked on "Make text and other items larger or smaller". From this I changed it to 100% from 125%. I noticed it had changed my font size to the 100%. It then made everything SUPER small when I changed my theme settings.Whenever I right click and go into personalization settings, I do the usual customizing to my likings. Since I want to save the theme, I do so by naming it, blah. Now I want to use the blah theme by click on it, and I do so. Everything is fine and dandy until I right click my desktop to refresh(out of habit). This is the before and after of the font sizes.
Before
After
My workaround was to set a custom DPI setting, log off like it prompts me to, then changing it back to 100%, again prompting to do so. It is so annoying to do so.

Windows7, IE8 History Browsing: "View By Order Visited Today"
Instead History will show Recents Pages by X pages (Recent FIFO method), it shows by "Today".
Every time when it is 00:00 (midnight), it resets all the history I've had.
I want to change it to "View By Order Visited" or "View By Order Visited for couple days", instead of "View By Order Visited Today" (Browsing History displays only for one day), So that If it pass midnight - I could still see the last links.

would like to add a 3rd monitor to my PC, I understand I need a Graphics card that can support 3 monitors, I think this is ports AGP DMI HDMI if the initials are wrong I am sorry, anyhoo I then have 3 ports to plug into, the question is.. Stay with me I have 2 Hanns G 23" monitors and a HP 24", I would like the HP to be the centre one, in which I do most of my work, the other 2 which I hope can be left and right of centre, going with the graphics card at the moment, I have screen (1) and screen (2) it was simple setup, but I have to push my mouse to the right to get into my 2nd screen thats sits on my left, ok I could place this screen on my right, it's not the point, when I get the 3rd screen will I have the flexibility to make the centre screen i.e the one that will hold my icons etc number 1 screen, then in a perfect world push the mouse to the right and I am in the RH screen, or push the mouse to the left (from centre screen) and I am in the LH screen?

When I originally installed 7 on my dad's PC, I disconnected the other 2 hard drives (I did not want the boot selection screen popping up all the time). Everything has been working fine (he uses XP, so I use the BIOS to select the hard drive boot order when I want to boot into 7). Yesterday I disconnected the Windows 7 hard drive, so that I could clone his XP installation over to the secondary hard drive in the machine (the primary & secondary drives are 80 GB SATA units, while the Windows 7 drive is a 30 GB IDE unit).
When I was finished, I shut down the machine & hooked the Windows 7 hard drive back up. For some odd reason, the machine boots into 7 no matter which drive is selected first in the BIOS boot order. I cannot figure this one out. With the Windows 7 drive disconnected, the machine boots into XP just fine. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this to happen?? I cloned the XP drive once before & did not have this problem(I do it every couple of months so that he has a complete image should the main hard drive fail).

First of all sorry if there has been any similar question in the past.I am having a really agravating problem: my motherboard's bios keeps rearranging the boot order for the hard disks on every power-on cycle. I always turn the power off at night from the PSU swith to protect from spikes. If i don't do that, the boot order remains as i set it. The problem itself is: when pc is powered on, the RAID set i use for windows and games doesn't show up at all not even in the boot device selection menu F8. So i have to reset the system and only then can i use the F8 boot menu to select the RAID and use the pc normally, and the RAID is always the last option in the list. To make things worse, the wireless keyboard i use doesn't always work on the first attempt - probably legacy USB detection glitch - but that's ok i can live with that one as long as i am able to use it in Windows. The motherboard is Asus P5N-E SLI. Also i did verify the CMOS battery with a voltmeter and it shows over 3V so it's in good shape. Makes sense it be good since i've only had the board a few months, it's practically new even though not a new model. I also checked with Asus website for newer BIOS but not a chance, the motherboard is not even in production any more.

SSD, HDD and DVD DRIVE. What should be the boot order for these three? Someone told me it was DVD>HDD>SDD and on a guide I read it was HDD>DVD>SDD. Is there actually a specific boot order or is it based more on what you're using it for or something like that? Not too sure which category to post this thread in since im building a new PC and I think that goes under 'Installation'... Or maybe it should have been in 'Hardware'...?
