Can't Access And Programs At All

Feb 23, 2011

Just the other day I booted up my computer only to realize that i couldn't open any programs (firefox, skype, word, excel etc.) After double clicking icons it wouldnt pretend to load them by making the circling cursor but would stop. I also couldn't start them from the program directory either. I am curretnly using my laptop to write this as i can't get the internet on my computer either.I rebooted in safe mode and nothing changed., I couldnt access anything. I'm suspecting a virus, but am totally clueless of how to deal with it seeing as I cant run any anti virus programs or download anything to this computer.

Cannot Access Some Programs With Right-click

May 8, 2010

I have a laptop which I upgraded from Vista to Win7. On it, there are a few programs, especially "File Shredder", which I access a lot with a right-click. But, upon buying my new Win 7-64 bit laptop, a number of these do not provide for right-click access. I have un-installed and re-installed, but no luck. I really wish I could use File Shredder.

Many Programs Can't Seem To Access The Internet

Mar 24, 2009

Most of my programs work fine (Firefox, IE8, Xfire, Halo, etc.); but a lot of the other ones can't seem to access the internet. Windows Live's setup always seems to give me that problem, plus Windows Update and McCafee (!!).

I'm running the .exe's as administrators in computability mode for Vista when needed, but it's still not working. Can anybody fix this please?

Windows 7 Block Access To Certain Programs?

I'm trying to install this game onto my computer. (I've got Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit) Every time I click to run the .exe I either get that Windows cannot find the specified path, or that I don't have permission to run the program. I'm the administrator on my PC so I don't understand why I don't have access to run this program.

Internet Available Through Browser But Some Programs With No Access

Oct 1, 2011

I just reformatted my computer and installed Windows 7 64bit. I can access the internet just fine on Google Chrome. I can download at the fastest speed my connection will allow. Some programs, 2 in particular, won't allow connections but others will. Examples are: Ventrilo, and PlayOnline will access the internet, but GSC and Final Fantasy XI will not allow connections. I've gone through the router and opened ports for them, disabled UAC and windows firewall. I do not have any other firewall or virus scanner installed yet as they interfered on previous systems setting up my commonly used programs. I've also tried running the programs as administrator to no avail.

The problem is: even though I am the administrator, I cannot even view what is in that folder, much less delete any files withinit. The vendor (GENIE9) is totally clueless as to how to do this.Apparently the operating system has put some severe restrictions on this folder even for users that are administrators.

Allowing User Access To Programs

Nov 13, 2009

Okay okay, I know typical forum etiquette and hate being that new guy that just logs in to ask a simple question, but today I'm that guy. I tried searching and couldn't find an answer and something this simple should easily be found at least on Microsoft's page.

I just want to know the best way to allow programs to be accessed and/or denied access by various user accounts.

Example: I currently have Photoshop Elements installed on my computer and the only way I could find to give access to the others users (household media center) was to copy a short cut and paste it on that users desktop. Then I had to install it on each individual user account. I had to do the same for Firefox and Napster. Is there a better way to do this??

I am currently having issues with Napster running correctly and I have a feeling it's because of the way that added this to each user's account.

Dual Boot Access To Same Programs

Jul 26, 2009

I have installed Windows 7 on my Computer on a separate partition to Windows XP2 to have a dual boot set up. Now, I would like to allow Windows 7 access to the Programs I have operating with Windows XP. If possible without having to install them again for Windows 7. These programs are currently scattered over three partitions including the OS partition of Win XP

Majority of these appear to have system files in the Win XP OS.

Is there any simple way I can get these programs to function under Windows 7 without having to install them again for Windows 7?

Prevent Programs To Access Internet

Nov 25, 2009

I don't really need a firewall (I use a router).

I'm looking just for something that alerts me if a program wants to access Internet (and send out information) and where I have the chance to allow or prevent that (recurring/nonrecurring). is there a small (preferably free ware) program available for this? is this possible and useful with Windows Firewall? if not, what Firewall (especially to manage the outgoing traffic) would you prefer? Thanks a lot!

Error 5: Access Is Denied When Try To Install Programs

My account is set up as an administrator, and I have always been able to do whatever I desired on my system. Now I can't install programs at all. Every one I try, I get an "access is denied" message. For example, when I try to (re)install winmail-reader-setup.exe, I get "Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Setup aborted. Error 5: Access is denied"What in the world have I done?! I have checked my account, folder privileges, etc, and nothing looks amiss except that I have two "unknown" user accounts that I haven't seen before...not sure how those got there. But I'm running with my own account, with full privileges, administrator access.

Is it possible to install the old hard drive and access all the programs and files on it even though it has an operating system on it? Can I just transfer all those programs and files from the old one and reformat it to free space or is there a way to just remove the operation system and still access the the files and programs?

Limit A Programs Access To Computer Files And Services

Jun 16, 2011

how to limit access for a program to my computer. I play World of Warcraft and I am concerned about hackers attempting to access my Outlook or other sensitive files on my computer. I also want to limit the programs access to only files within the folder it is located in. In other words, I don't want the game to be able to access my computer's services, files, etc other than the files contained within the World of Warcraft folder on my hard drive.

I am concerned that I could be hacked and an attempt was already made to change my WoW password. I noticed my outlook window flashes when WoW is running at the same time. I use an authenticator on my Wow account so my account was not compromised other than the inconvenience of having to reset my password from within the us.battle.net account management website.

I use Norton Security Suite and Malwarebytes anti malware protection programs but I would feel much more secure if I could limit Wow to only access the WoW folder on my PC.

Guest Account Restrictions - Setting Programs And Folder Access Permissions

Oct 4, 2011

I have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.

For instance I need to:
-deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations

If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..

Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.

Slow/crashing Programs, Programs Disappearing From Start Bar

Feb 3, 2013

Every time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).

McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.

This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.

Can't Access Any Folder By Double Clicking, Can't Access User Accounts Or Dell Backup

Mar 4, 2011

I have a Dell Inspiron 545s Desktop - Intel Duo Core 2.93, 6gb RAM, 720gb HD, 64bit Windows 7

I get the message: (every time I try and open a folder on my c/drive - Can't access Windows Explorer folder on the taskbar and any other folder or file by double clicking it. I can open them by right clicking, then open)
"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a progra or, if one is already installed, create an assocation in the Default Programs control Panel".

I can open applications. But, I can not open the folder for them lets say in c:/program files -- the only way to open them is by rightclicking, then open. If I double click, I get the above error message. (same issue with "my documents", "My pictures", etc).

Included with the above problems: I now, can not access User Accounts. When I go into Control Panel, click User Accounts.. I can not manage existing ones, nor can I "Add or remove user accounts". I click the link and nothing happens.

I have someething built into the computer called "Dell DataSafe Backup". Its a recovery partition/part of the HDD that saves all my files for a recovery. However, I can NOT access it. I click the "Dell DataSafe" in my taskbar and nothing happens..

Unable To Connect To Wifi - No Network Access/limited Access

Nov 10, 2011

Last night I was on the internet at home absolutely fine and my laptop automatically downloaded an update, since then I have been unable to connect to my wi-fi. I deleted the updates and was still unable to connect, so I tried to used a system recovery restore point and every one I use starts but fails to complete. So, I did a factory reset after around 8 hours of trying to sort it out today and I STILL have the same problem. I can plug in the cable to connect and my housemate is having absolutely no issues connecting and neither is my phone so now I am at a total loss what I should do to resolve this. Prior to the factory reset I was able to connect to the wi-fi but it was stating no network access/limited access and now it simply won't connect to my internet at all. It finds my full strength signal but will not connect. My drivers for the Broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n card are the most up to date and the laptop (HP G62) says it is working fine.
