Both PC And Laptop Freezing When Surfing Web - Completely Unresponsive

Jun 27, 2012

Recently both my PC and Laptop have started to freeze intermittently when surfing the net. By freezing I mean that the computer becomes completely unresponsive with the screen stuck on whatever page I was on at the point of the freeze - the mouse cursor stops moving, the clock stops ticking, no response to control-alt-delete, etc. Nothing I can do but power down and re-boot. I have tried just leaving the PC for an hour but it does not recover.

This happens regularly but intermittently and at random intervals. I can rarely go 30 mins of surfing without a freeze. On my laptop the fan really ramps up when this freeze happens - as if the CPU usage has gone up to 100%. However, the on screen CPU gage gadget does not change as the whole screen is frozen. When I log back in there is nothing in the windows event logs for the time of the failure.

The PC is on Windows XP and the laptop is Windows 7. I use a mix of IE9 and Chrome on the laptop and IE8 and Chrome on the PC. The freeze happens using any of these browsers. The only thing that I can see that the PC and Laptop have in common is that they are using the same router (PC via cable and laptop via wi-fi) and I have Norton 360 and Norton Family installed on both. How I can track down the cause of this issue? (Disabling Norton Family makes no difference.) Any other logs or logging tools that I could use?

Dell XPS M1530 Becomes Completely Unresponsive When Entering Sleep?

Jun 27, 2012

I have a Dell XPS M1530 which I installed Windows 7 Professional (SP1) x86 from MSDN.Most times when the laptop is going to sleep from a power management sleep after x minutes, or closing the lid, this happens:The system appears to hang. There's no hard disk activity and nothing recorded in the event viewer around that time.- The screen is black and doesn't wake up- Capslock/numlock don't light up when toggledAnd I have to hold the power button to turn the system off. When I turn it back on there's no evidence of a bugcheck or error in any of the system event logs.

Windows 7 Computer Freezing And Becomes Unresponsive

Feb 6, 2012

Recently my computer started freezing it completely freezes and becomes unresponsive and I have to hold down the power button to reboot, so my first attempt was to scan the hardware I ran a Pc-Check diagnostics and all the hardware passed I then completely formatted the hard drive and restored the computer. Once Windows 7 completely installed I installed the missing wireless driver however, after using the computer for about 15min it froze again. I then disassemble the laptop and did some internal cleaning I blew out the dust from the heat sink and applied new thermal paste to the processor. Even after that the problem still remains. Now there is a catch when I boot the computer in safe mode it doesn't freeze even after leaving it on for 5hrs so I don't know what the problem is in normal boot.

Specs:
Toshiba Laptop
Model L505-S5984
Windows 7 SP1 64-bit
WD 320 GB HDD
2X4GB DDR3 Memory = 8GB

Freezing Desktop And Unresponsive Programs After Malware Removal?

Oct 1, 2012

remove ZeroAccess trojans that were traumatizing my laptop erfectly (used ComboFix,MalwareBytes and TDSSKiller) and the malware doesn't show up on any scans anymore (ran from Safe Mode), but I cannot access my desktop for more than 5min at a time before it freezes up and I have to manually shut down and start up again. I managed to re-install my Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 temporarily, but it doesn't show up on my desktop or taskbar. I have tried SFC/scannow returned :"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." My system restore does not work either for some reason since I got this laptop a year ago and Startup Repair shows no errors.. I am relatively good with computer diagnosis, but this one has me losing sleep for two days straight.

PC Keeps On Completely Freezing

Dec 31, 2010

i built my new pc a couple of weeks ago, with mostly new parts (kept my psu and hdd). my pc keeps on completely freezing (no audio, can't move the mouse), forcing me to force shutdown and turn it back on again. sometimes after turning it off it works fine, other times it freezes again at any point during startup (once during bios, sometimes during windows setup, and sometimes minutes after it is fully started). the problem is, this freezing happens randomly. so far it's occurred while the system was idle, while watching a Internet video, and while opening google chrome. what is weird is how it rarely happens during gaming. i played 6 hours straight of bad company 2 on max settings with no problems. i've also played about 10 hours of the witcher this week and have only had it freeze once. sometimes the pc will freeze multiple times in a day, and sometimes it will only freeze a few times a week.i've run memtest 86 and memtest86+ when i initally bought the computer, and it found no problems. i ran these tests again two days ago and it still found no problems. i also ran a couple of stress tests (using prime96) and the pc never crashed when it was under full load. when i use speedfan, my system is normally 29c, my cpu is 36c, my video card is 40c, and the "core" is 35c. the only thing it has a problem with is something called "aux" which changes from anywhere between 40c and 130c. i read on the internet that it shouldn't matter, but... that's what it is.i've also checked the error logs, and so far i can't really find anything that corresponds to the times that is freezing. i've also ran my computer with all the startup items turned off, but it also froze that way too.

i've messed with ram timings, and gskill says they should be set to 9-9-9-24-2n with a voltage of 1.5. i've done that in the mobo, with the exception of "2n" which i don't really understand.at the recommendation of someone else, i've started running my pc with only one stick of ram at a time. i just tried the first stick yesterday in the first slot, and it froze at the very end of the day (after i had already played the witcher and watched a movie on it).it was suggested to me that i run memtest with one stick in it at a time (which i haven't done yet). is that really necessary? i was under the impression that memtest simply found errors on all the sticks, if there were any.finally, as just a side note, i built my brother a pc very similar to mine (everything except the case and the hdd are the same) and he has had no problems with his yet, telling me that everything is physically compatible and that the memory timings must be right.

Unresponsive And Freezing Windows (can't Open Task Manager, Can't Close Windows)

Jul 3, 2012

My computer is very unresponsive with hangs which can last up to several minutes where nothing is clickable, the mouse is movable, I can hover over desktop icons and see the outline register, but when I click, for example to open my computer, it will start the freezing.Task manager does not open, saying with an error message:"Failure to display security and shut down options The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when ctrl alt delete was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."I checked performance monitor and there is no noticeable hardware issue, which makes me believe it's either the PSU or motherboard. I took out the ram one by one and tested the system and the same thing happens. My most likely guess is that the power supply is failing, and this is just early symptoms of that. I already had a power supply fail on this computer 2 years ago, but at that time it would shut the computer down unexpectedly.I removed viruses, spyware, and did all the basics. This is a fresh system install.

Windows 7 On Laptop Unresponsive

Mar 17, 2012

My EEEPC 1201N laptop is unresponsive after a few minutes after loading my desktop. It's running on Windows 7 Starter. Before this happened, I saw a message just after the boot display and before the welcome/log-in screen something like: C:Windows....Registry..I can't remember what exactly it was because I thought it was just an update (but it was the first ever type of message update I've seen compared to previous update messages).I did a system disk check scan, and no errors were found. I also did an avast! boot system scan and the log was:File C:UsersAsus EEEPC 1201NApp DataLocalTempkB9fdCry. exe. part| >Quick Time. msi |>QuickTime.cab|>QTInfo.exe Error 42127 {CAB archive is corrupted}Cyber link temp update file was infected by "Win 32: Trojan-gen." I experience the OS crashed for a few times, but this is the first time it became unresponsive.I would like to know how can I detect whether other system files were corrupted/infected that causes the OS to be unresponsive and fix the issue.

Windows 7 64 Bit Laptop Keyboard Unresponsive

Oct 2, 2012

Win 7 was freshly installed on my laptop on a brand new 160 gb hard drive. 1st fresh install was Win Home ver 7 32bit. After installing 32 bit , realizied I mistakenly installed Win 7 32 bit Home version. Product key revealed original software was Win 7 Pro 64bit. Keyboard problem did not occur with 32 bit version. Once I installed the Pro 64 bit version the keyboard was non responsive.

Keyboard worked fine with 32 bit install and unresponsive after 64 bit install. Touch pad works.

I carefully removed and installed brand new laptop keyboard. Same identical problem. Non responsive laptop keyboard. Suspect this is a software problem but unable to know which/what software driver may be compatible with 64bit Win 7Pro version.

Windows 7 Update Causing HP Laptop To Be Unresponsive?

Dec 3, 2012

My HP Pavilion DM4 laptop is currently un responsive, stuck in the midst of a Windows update (screen showing "Please do not power off or unplug your machine, Installing update 2 of 2") for more than 16 hours. I've tried to hard reboot it by pressing the power button but it doesn't work (the same screen with the Update message just keeps displaying). I'm ready to take the battery out but wanted to check here first to find out what you think I should do.

Here is some add'l background. This laptop was experiencing issues w/the keyboard and mouse not working after a Windows update was applied a couple of months ago (didn't realize it at the time). I tried several things to try to fix it before I realized I could do a system restore and just go back to a time before the update was applied (sometime in Aug or Sept). I then shut off the automatic Windows updates and ran each update separately (there were about 16 critical and 6 recommended updates), rebooted and checking for issues in between each update. I should have written down exactly which update this was (I believe it was from Oct 9 and related to security issues w/Microsoft Windows).

what I can do to get my laptop to respond again??

Dell Inspiron N5050 Laptop Unresponsive - Windows 7 Could Not Start Successfully

Jul 27, 2012

I bought my Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop, windows 7, intel i3 core processor about 3 weeks ago, and it ran perfectly, handled all my ridiculous multitasking well, and was really light compared to others I've had. This morning my nephew was using it to play Skyrim (I digress, sometimes I sneak onto his game files for a little fun) and....well he has some anger issues, but that's not what this is about. Something upset him and he slammed the lower left side of the laptop pretty dern hard. Nothing broke on the outside, but suddenly the computer became unresponsive, and I had to force shut down the whole thing. When it started back up it wouldn't....start back up. I got an error message saying "Windows could not start successfully, we recommend you launch startup repair to try and fix the problem. Well I did that about 2 dozen times in a row with failures each time, till finally, much to my joy, it successfully started back up. Except now whenever I try to open a new program, it sometimes has periods of unresponsiveness, and some things like Skyrim can't be opened at all.

Hibernate Won't Completely Shut Down Laptop

Sep 22, 2009

Ok so when I had XP I would always use hibernate and only about once a week I would actually reboot the computer completely. Now that I have Windows 7 I would like to do the same. But now when I click hibernate the screen goes black and everything shuts off but the computer acts like its in standby. The lights are still on and computer is running.

Once this happens I cannot get back into windows or reboot without holding down the power button to force a reset. Each time that I have done with Windows 7 boots an error saying the computer was not shutdown correctly. Anyone know why it won't completely power off when I click hibernate. I have tried it about 5 separate times and it has not worked once.

Laptop Battery Meter Is Completely Wrong?

Oct 11, 2012

Today when I turned on my laptop, suddenly, there was a message that my battery has problems so the computer might shut down suddenly. I tried different strategies, like uninstalling the battery driver, or letting the computer completely die. When it turned off itself at 6%, I turned it back on, and it was at 2 minutes battery life. Then in a few minutes, it said 4 minutes battery life for 6%. Now, it's passed an hour, and it says 3 minutes, but changes sometimes to 1-4 minutes. The battery meter is completely wrong, and I don't know what to do since it is closing the computer way too early. I'm still not sure what the problem is.

Now it does it every time I'm on the battery. Also, right before this started happening I was getting GREAT battery life out of my battery, so I don't personally think the battery has gone bad, however you may feel different!

Windows 7 Completely Stalls And Freezes On Toshiba Laptop

After the freeze i check the event logs and the only thing posted is the fact that i shut it down. i even did a factory restore and it still does the freezing. and yes windows 7 is the stanfard OS i the laptop. it is only about 14 months old. i am thinking of buying a new hard drive but i would rather solve the problem then buy a hard drive.

Laptop Freezes (completely Locks Up) When Playing A Video

Dec 28, 2012

this first started occurring on monday the 24th, i played a Internet video on firefox and the video lagged with a black screen on the first 1-2 seconds of the video. at around 3 seconds, everything stopped. my cursor, the video, the whole laptop etc. the time was no longer moving on the video and my system time wasn't changing either so i concluded that my laptop was frozen. i waited it out and there was nothing i could do but hold down the power button in an attempt to try and turn.at this point i'm still able to watch Internet videos on chrome perfectly, however... playing a video file from my hard drive produces the same problem. i've tried playing files from both wmp and vlc player, and the same thing happened both times.what i've tried:

- uninstalled and then re-installed my display driver
- i tried a system restore yesterday and got a bsod before my laptop even got to shut down
- i did a successful system restore to the 22nd via safe mode
- searched the web for solutions but couldn't find anything
-reinstalling windows (i'm in the middle of doing uni work atm so i'm trying to avoid this)
-buying a new laptop (when i get the money)

may be useful:

-i was getting quite a few "low ram" messages from the system on the day that it first occurred, before it first occurred. haven't seen anymore of them, however.
-playing 3gp and mp3 files on wmp is fine

It's battery has been shot for a while (I am in the process of buying a new one), could that have anything to do with it

Laptop Still Freezing Even After Recovery?

Every time i clicked on the start menu, opened a webpage or clicked on a file it would freeze , unfreeze after 5 minutes and then.... ye freeze. So it kept freezing, and at times when i tried booting it, i would be faced with a useless black screen.i managed to find my recovery disk and started a " full destructive recovery " using the built in Repair Environment ( re-install basically ).So now that i'd re-installed it, here was me thinking everything would be hunky-dory. Ofcourse, it is not.Already , even after a few days it is showing signs of freezing up again. I'm scared to click too fast or open too many apps incase it bombs out on me. With 4GB RAM and a 2.1 GHZ Processor , freezing up should be the last thing to happen...I have tried virus scans etc, used ccleaner's registry fixer aswell but i can't seem to find the issue.

HP Laptop Freezing During Startup?

Jan 19, 2012

I've had issues with this thing for awhile but for the sake of the forum I'l stick to my current issue.Upon startup, everything works fine. I put in my login password and Windows begins to load. While Windows is loading it just reezes. The only thing I can say is it freezes after most of the applications load but it's still searching for networks. Straight freezenothing works. However, and this was weird, out of the 4 or 5 times it froze last night, one of the times I was still able to move the mouse. Nothing else worked though. My drivers should be up to date. I do check them and update them as needed.I do regular checks for viruses and spyware. I use free programs that are updated regularly.I "clean up" my system on somewhat regular basis.I defragment the hard drive on a somewhat regular basis.I clean my registry regularly.I deleted the programs that start up with the computer that I don't need. Winamp, my spyware scanner, and this clean-your-PC program I downloaded (see below) no result I recently got suckered into one of those clean your PC programs that cost like 20 bucks. That's the only major program I've downloaded recently. I did a system restore to before I downloaded that and the same problem occurred. The computer works fine in safe mode. Even "with networking" it connects to the internet just fine.I did just realize I didn't do a virus scan in safe mode last night, I'll do that when I get home tonight. But if you guys know a good free virus scanner to use let me know, otherwise I'll follow up if the virus scan fixes it.

Laptop Freezing Every Few Minutes?

Feb 16, 2012

I have an HP Pavilion G42-303DX. It's only about 8 months old. About 3 weeks ago after turning it on, a screen came up saying the cooling fan wasn't working and continued use could result in lost files. I went ahead and continued so I could backup files. Later in the day the fan made a funny noise and then started again. Since then it has been working. A few days ago the laptop started freezing randomly during use. The last couple of days it has been freezing every 10-15 minutes or so. I have to hold in the button to turn it off. I don't know if this is due to the fan maybe not properly cooling the laptop. According to HP my warranty has already ran out (I thought they typically lasted a year?). I imagine it would be cheaper at a repair shop than to send to HP if needed. But before I spent any money, I wanted to see if maybe it was a simple fix I could do myself. I ran startup repair and restored it to a previous day. It didn't fix the problem.
