I just got a computer for free, a Dell Studio 1555. When I got it, it would try to boot, then come to a screen that said that bootmgr.exe was missing. Sometimes I got a message that said something like mpio.sys was corrupted or missing. I have a Win 7 disk, so I put it in and tried to repair the installation. Each time I ran it, it said that the repair had failed. I tried to reinstall windows 7, and It made it to the first restart in the process. It showed the "Starting Windows" screen, but the colors of the windows logo never appeared, then I got the missing bootmgr screen. I decided to install Ubuntu and see if that worked, and it did (I installed it alongside the Windows installation). It was Ubuntu 10.04. I thought, "OK, so i'll just use this as a Linux machine"...and I decided to go back and reinstall so that I could use the entire hard drive. It never worked correctly again. Each subsequent time that I installed Ubuntu, I was told something along the lines of "Gnome Power Manager did not install correctly" and got a slow and choppy Ubuntu installation.Tried to install 11.10, and it failed completely. I opened the Ubuntu live from my usb drive, and opened the disk utility. I now cannot format, reformat, partition, or delete partitions on the drive. Is all of this just a case of a hard drive on its last legs, or is there something else going on here?

I cannot boot into Windows because it says that the file /boot/BCD is missing with an error code of 0x0000007. If I run Repair from my installation disk and in System Recovery Options, it says that it has detected problems and asks if I want to repair it. The items it wants to repair are: " The following startup option will be repaired:Name: {bootmgr}Identifier: {9DEA862C-5CDD-4E70-ACC1-F32B344D4795}
The following startup options will be added:
Name: Windows 7 Ultimate (recovered)
Path: Windows
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)
Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recovery9426aa67-30ff-11e0-a348-506313b5e718Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)
A copy of the current boot configuration data will be saved as C:BootBCD.Backup.0002"If I click yes, it says that it cannot save the current settings for the BCD and refuses to continue. When I choose Startup Repair, it attempts to fix the problem but fails.
The problem details are:
Root cause found:
No OS files found on disk.
Repair action: Partition table repair
Result: Failed. Error code: 0x3bc3
I think that this is because Startup Repair is trying to fix the thumbdrive that I keep my Windows 7 install files in. I am overseas now and as my computer does not have an internal optical disk drive and my external drive is back home, thus using my thumbdrive is the only way to access the repair console.
I tried running a few commands, namely:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
Fixmbr and fixboot work, but when I run RebuildBCD, it detects C:Windows as having a Windows installation, but if I type Y(yes) or A(all), it says that the requested system device cannot be found.

For some odd reason, after doing some changes to my partitions in Windows 7 and restarting my computer, I got the ol' "BOOTMGR is missing" message. I have the Windows 7 Repair Disc image file and a 4GB USB Flash Drive, but, sadly, no CDs. Is there any way that I can put the image file onto my USB Flash Drive and boot from it with my Acer Aspire X1200 desktop computer?

I have two harddrives in my computer, one is 750GB and just has a bunch of different files from my older computer (documents, movies, etc, but no traces operating system). My other harddrive is 1TB and has Windows 7 on it (which I'm typing from now). For some reason (I think after I installed a Windows Update), when I restart the computer it says, "Bootmgr is missing. Press CTR+ALT+DEL to restart". Before, this had never happened, so I figured out that I had to manually go into my HP boot menu (by pressing ESC when I first start the computer) and then choose my 1TB harddrive to boot into Windows 7. This is kind of a pain.

I've had this laptop handed to me after my friend's son tried to restore using the supplied restore disk, but it failed. Not having the win 7 disk, only the restore, I ran ntfs for dos and there are no files on the hard drive anymore. It shows 3 partitions, one of about 400 and 2 of 40000MBs.I tried to install winxp but it begins to load the files gets to the windows loader (splash) screen then I get the BSOD and the system gives the message that there is a error and windows is stopped from loading.I thought I would reformat the drive, then repartition, then load win xp, but I can't get beyond the windows splash screen.I tried bart pe but that wouldn't load, I also tried ultimate boot cd

When receiving this message on boot up attempt running windows 7 home premium on a dell 1545 laptop with a fresh install and new hard drive would the problem be hardware related or software? Any chance it could be hardware related to the motherboard or is it most likely software related to the OS install?

Last night I tried to absorb a 3gb partition. Tried to shrink, delete... couldn't get it back into c:, so I just made it back into a partition, different letter. I left the disk manager open when I put the computer to sleepAlienware M11x r2.Turned it on this morning, got the bootmgr missing. I dug out the original microsoft disk, plugged in my external firwire cd drive, and tried to boot from there. The setup utility showed the cd drive after I plugged it in, but choosing it doesn't seem to stick. Then rebooting doesn't behave differently. Trying to reboot from network works, says cable not connected.

Recently I installed Windows 7 x64 RTM on my 500gb, on my 320gb I had XP and build 7600 x32 running, I decided to format my 320gb as i was switching over x64 (formatted using windows 7 disc), The OS refused to boot claiming boot files were missing, after running startup repair a few times it was fixed.
Now when I try remove my 320gb it refuses to boot and claims boot files are missing, having a look at my 320gb in computer management I see it has a second partition called system reserved, which has bootmgr and other files in it, so it seems windows 7 installed on my 500gb but put all the boot info on my 320gb, how do i create a boot section/folder on my 500gb so I dont have to keep my 320gb in my pc?

I use XP on my machine with two 300 GB HDs configured as RAID1 (Nvidia NForce 570 SLI). There are two partitions C (100 GB) for system and D (remaining 200 GB) for data. All is working fine.
Now I try to install Windows 7. First I resized D by 100 GB and installed Windows 7 on this new partition. I updated the Nvidia NForce RAID driver and can see correctly my RAID under Windows 7.
My problem now is that if I start my computer always the old XP boots up.
The Boot Manager is not present. The only way I can boot Windows 7 is to insert the
Windows 7 installation DVD (and not pressing any key) then Windows 7 is booting.
The boot manager is present but only on this new Windows 7 partition. I already tried (using EasyBCD under Windows 7) to add the old XP as a second entry in the Boot Manager but I was not able to boot XP using the boot manager.
I see the XP-Partition under Windows 7 and vice versa but it seems to be impossible to use the boot manager.
How can I install the Windows 7 Boot Manager on my XP-partition, thus I will be able to
choose whether to boot XP or Windows 7.

I was trying to reclaim some unallocated space on the drive and in the process seem to have lost boot manager, so it won't load Windows. If I put the disc in, it's not able to automatically able to repair because it says the repair disc I'm using is not compatible with the OS I have installed. This is the same disc I used to install Win 7 in the first place. Tried using cmd prompt to reload boot manager manually, and it completes the operation successfully but still says bootmgr is missing at start up.What's scaring me is that if I try to just install Win 7 again (onto the unallocated space), the hard drive just turns off and the hdd light comes on solid. This is when I choose 'Install Now' from the opening screen before selecting partitions etc. I'm typing this post from a spare hdd. The only thing I can think off at this point is the get an enclosure and recover my files; then wipe the hdd in question and reinstall Win 7.

I partitioned my HD in attempt to dual boot linux. But with a botched install of linux, I am now getting the above error when I try to boot back into windows. I have booted from an install dvd, gone to the command prompt and ran these commands I found in another thread.
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
All three commands were completed successfully but in the end, still no go. Any other suggestions I could try?

I've been using my new desktop for the last couple of months. Didn't have any problems until all of a sudden my computer just completely shut down and restarted while I was using it. And now it cannot boot, it just comes up with a 'Missing Operating System' message! I went into BIOS and it still detects my hard drive.
I booted from my Windows 7 CD and it looks like its going to load from my CD, and then it just stalls and comes up with the same message.. 'Missing Operating System'

i recently got a new SSD and I've installed windows 7 home premium on it. However whenever i boot into my SSD's windows 7, it says that boot manager is missing. In order to boot into windows 7, i would have to change my first boot to my CD, when it asks me to press something to boot cd, i would just leave it. It would then come to a page that allows me to choose from the windows 7 installed on my SSD and the windows 7 installed on my old hard drive.

So the other day I wake up to log on to my Alienware M17x m1, which was running windows 7 ultimate x64 sp1. As it's booting up, I see the message operating system missing. So I grab my USB thumb drive (my cd/DVD drive does not work, thus I have to use windows 7 on USB). Tried to reinstall windows that way, but was getting some partition error of some sort. Now when I try to boot up with USB, I can't even get to the windows 7 installation screen. I get - The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.

Recently I have had a load of hardware issues which have caused me to replace my PSU and GPU. After doing so to more powerful units, I went to boot up again and got the error: "BOOTMGR is missing"
I have had this before when I remove my secondary HDD and just try and boot from my primary SSD, but after re-connecting the secondary HDD it would work again (telling me this BOOTMGR is on the HDD, even though the Windows files are on the SSD).
I don't know what to make of this as if I boot from the SSD alone nothing happens and it restarts, and if I connect the HDD and it boots then it goes into the System Recovery and after repairing/restoring still won't work. I think the BIOS settings are correct, with the SATA drives set to AHCI (as I'm 99% sure they were before).
My PC specs are:
Intel i7 980X
Intel DX58SO Motherboard
128GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD
2TB WD HDD (secondary)
Radeon 7850 2GB GFX
8GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 Ultimate
