Block Local IP Address For Specific Users Only?
Oct 26, 2011
We have a NAS on our network which I would like to block some remote desktop users from using. So far I tried creating a two custom inbound/outbound rules to block the ip address but it does not seem to have any effect - anyway I don't think there is a way to apply it to specific users.
Another thing I have done via MMC Management Console is follwed the guide here (XP but similar enough to follow for 7) [URL]
Basically, created a IP security policy to block the ip address under "IP Security policies" snap in. This works but unfortunately cant see how to apply it to specific users only.

I'm looking to block a specific network both wired and wirelessly and wondering if there is a way to do this. I spend to much time on the internet when at home. I can now lock the computers so that during specific times I can't access the home network. HOWEVER I would like to configure one laptop computer so that it can't hook up to the home network at all. Not being able to connect with the network either hard wire or wirelessly. I want to be able to take that computer to other locations though and be able to hook up wirelessly to them. So in other words I couldn't connect to the home network but can connect to other networks.

I made a post awhile back about a HDD making clicks, as though the arm was resetting. Occasionally while accessing files explorer freezes. I however noticed this has (so far) only occurred at a specific point of disk usage.I'm hoping I can some how amputate the bad section of the drive so it is never read or written to, or even seen for that matter. There are no disk errors in a scan, so I just want to cut a chunk out of it and hope for the best. Is there a safe way to do this?

i have a desktop and a laptop:
desktop:
user: alex
password: password
laptop:
user: alex
password: password
On the laptop, i now want to share a folder with the desktop, but only for the desktop, not for the whole homegroup, nor the whole network. They are both in the same homegroup, as well as some other computers.
As the accounts are the same I added the user 'alex' in the advanced sharing-options with full control. But it ditn't work, so I googled and also added full control for the user alex in the security options. But if I want to acces the folder from the desktop, I still get "no permissions". I, resp the user alex have/has admin-rights on both machines.Did I miss something?
I noticed that in the advanced settings of both sharing and security I can always just choose the local machine as a "location"... got this something to do with my problem?

I have a specific email contact who can be reached directly through my Gmail on Google but every time I send directly from Outlook 2010 the email dies as "Invalid Recipient". This applies even if I am replying to a received email from that person so it is not a typo or similar personal error and it is the only contact which behaves like this.

When connecting via an ethernet cable to a parent's modem, my laptop claims that Local Area Connection is unable to connect due to an invalid IP address. I've looked at many forums, but no single solution seems present and no one shares the same specs or IP config results with me.

I've had an extremely frustrating day trying to connect my WDTV Live to my desktop? I connect to the net through a wireless connection to my router. Because its in the other room, I can't connect my WDTV Live to the router without running cable along the floor. Having said that, its not far away from my desktop PC, so I'm trying to connect them directly via cable. The problem is that my WD keeps telling me that it can't obtain an IP address and I don't know how to fix it or what values to put in.

Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :

Above is the error that comes up after I troubleshoot this issue. okay so to start off let me say the things I have done.
1. I have restarted my computer multiple times and restarted the modem and router.
2. I've checked my services to make sure that that weird code is not there and it was not.
This problem just came up recently and had no issues with it before and this computer has been running for over a year.

DC: Win Server 2003
Laptops: Win7 Pro
When joining a set of laptops to the domain it prompts for domain admin credentials and appears to be successful, but gives an error of 'Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to " " failed. The name will remain domain.local The error was: The RPC Server is unavailable.
When attempting to add Domain Users to the local administrators group: Windows cannot process the object with the name "domain users" because of the following error: The RPC server is unavailable.
This happens even when wired on the network. I have tried uncommenting the localhost line in HOSTS, and manually adding the DNS server (which is also the DC).

I started getting a "DNS not responding"? on my desktop. All my wireless devices work fine, and when I turn off my laptop's WiFi card and plug it into the same router it works as well.I've done some Googleing on the issue and none of what I found has helped. When I do an ipconfig on each maching, the thing I notice is that on the working laptop I have an entry for the "Connection specific DNS suffix under the "Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection", where on the desktop that's not working the suffix is blank.

I recently installed Windows 7 on a brand new computer. Everything is working fine except I cannot connect to the Internet! I have been getting the following message:
"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP address
Thinking this was a Internet issue (as I'm using a brand new computer), I rang Virgin and they said it was an Ethernet Adapter issue.
The Network card I have is: Realtek PCIE FE Family Controller Could this be a conflict between Windows 7 and this network card?
Further details are computer (if this helps) are: Pentium Dual-Core CPU E6600 @ 3.06 GHZ ACPIx86 based PC The Windows 7 is a 32bit OS

Internet randomly dropped out at around 5 PM yesterday and haven't gotten it working since. When I connect to another computer (which I'm posting on right now) it works fine. The problematic computer is running Windows 7 64 bit, this computer is running Vista. There is no router involved.I've tried rebooting, disabling/renabling the adapter, rolling back the driver, a system restore, searching services.msc for bonjour (didn't see anything suspicious), updating to the current nforce driver, and manually setting an IP configuration among other things. I did an /ipconfig all on the computer that is working and used those details on the first computer while manually entering the IP, gateway, etc infohis got rid of the "doesn't have a valid IP address" error... great, right? But it's replaced with a generic "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem." When set to automatically obtain IP address I get a 169.x IP. I've tried pretty much every solution I've ever seen posted regarding this issue and nothing's working.

My internet connection shows 'no internet access' even though my ISP shows the connection is coming into the house just fine. I usually use a router (NetGear-WNR3500U) but I right now I have the Ethernet connection plugged directly into my PC. I tried directly plugging into my laptop and the internet works just fine. So I know the problem resides in the PC.
Some troubleshooting things I have tried.
-Power cycled my modem, router and PC.
-Repinged my connection from my ISP(Comcast Xfinity)
-Used the reset option on the router and the modem
-I was walked through the internet options needed with the tech support from my ISP to make sure DHCP was enabled and every other setting was correct, and he cleared me that all settings were correct.
-Tried ipconfig commands to /renew and /release my IP When I tried ipconfig /renew I get the error 'An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server'
-Restored my PC to a restore point where the Internet was working
All of these options did not work.
What I think the problem is and I am not sure how to fix it, when I run the ipconfig /all command my Auto configuration IPv4 Address shows 169.254.112.76 which I was told is a router IP address even though I am plugged directly from the modem to my PC with an Ethernet cord. So I think that's my problem? But I am not sure.

I just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive. The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)
1. Install windows normally.
2. After install, boot from installation disk.
3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair".
4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall
5. Verify all files copied successfully.
6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users
7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings"
8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users
9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users
10. Restart computer.
Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this. All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".

I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.
So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.
Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.
