Firewall - Allow Alternate Ports For RDP
Aug 10, 2009I'm looking for help configuring Windows 7 (RTM) firewall to allow traffic for an alternate Remote Desktop listening port in the most secure way possible. I know how to just open up the port completely, which works, but I'd rather not do that if I can just open it up for the Remote Desktop program.
I don't seem to be able to just "copy" the built-in Remote Desktop rule and change the port because the port number cannot be edited in some of the built in rules (or copies thereof, I guess). If it matters, I need to be able to access this port with both "old" and "new" versions of Remote Desktop (from an XP machine, as well as another windows 7 machine, for example).
Can anyone offer any assistance or otherwise offer any advice for my situation?
Firewall - How And What Ports To Open ?
May 9, 2009So I have started to use windows7 RC and it's build in firewall. Until now i was on win xp with eset firewall. Everything is ok so far except two things:
1.) There doesn't seem to be anything like learning mode for Windows 7 firewall, or is there? How em I supposed to make a rule for application if I don't know what port it needs to open? I know, one can use google, but this can get pretty annoying after a while. Log file also doesn't help much because it doesn't list application names. Is there some kind of 3rd party simple app which would monitor attepts for connection and tell me which port a specific application just tried to use so i could make a rule in windows firewall?
2.) It seems that Windows 7 firewall is creating inbound rules automatically (at least for local applications), can i turn this behavior off?
PPTP - Route Only Specific Ports

Oct 26, 2011We have a NAS on our network which I would like to block some remote desktop users from using. So far I tried creating a two custom inbound/outbound rules to block the ip address but it does not seem to have any effect - anyway I don't think there is a way to apply it to specific users.
Another thing I have done via MMC Management Console is follwed the guide here (XP but similar enough to follow for 7) [URL]
Basically, created a IP security policy to block the ip address under "IP Security policies" snap in. This works but unfortunately cant see how to apply it to specific users only.

Aug 19, 2012I started getting a "DNS not responding"? on my desktop. All my wireless devices work fine, and when I turn off my laptop's WiFi card and plug it into the same router it works as well.I've done some Googleing on the issue and none of what I found has helped.When I do an ipconfig on each maching, the thing I notice is that on the working laptop I have an entry for the "Connection specific DNS suffix under the "Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection", where on the desktop that's not working the suffix is blank.

Comodo Firewall - The Network Firewall Is Not Functioning Properly
Mar 4, 2009I've recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Beta Build 7000 and I have Comodo Firewall 3.8.65951.477 64-Bit installed as my firewall. I get this problem that I can't solve at all .
When I click on " Run Diagnostics" I have this :
Indeed, I click "Yes" and this is what comes next :
PS : The Windows 7 Firewall is desactivated!
Anybody haves an idea on this problem, please ?
USB 3.0 Ports Refuse To Work As USB 3.0 Ports
Aug 9, 2011A few days ago I installed a USB 3.0 card (to be precise, this one: 2-Port USB 3.0 SuperSpeed PCI-E Controller Card - Free Shipping - DealExtreme). It uses the very common NEC PD720200 USB 3.0 controller. I installed the required drivers for Windows 7, and the card worked fine for the first day or so. but not since. Whenever I plug in a USB 3.0 external hard drive, I get a false "This device can perform faster..." message, as if I had plugged the drive in a USB 2.0 port.
The external drive I am using is a Western Digital MyBook Essential 1130. It is definitely a USB 3.0 drive, and came with the required USB 3.0 cable. While the USB 3.0 card was working, I got full-speed transfers to the limit of the hard drive's ability, about 90-100 MB/s. Now I can only get USB 2.0 speeds (33-34 MB/s). Windows insists I have the drive plugged into a USB 2.0 port even though it is plugged directly into the USB 3.0 card.
Things I tried so far: -rebooting and complete power cycle. No difference. -plugging the drive into one port or the other. Also no difference. -Looked in Device manager.The controller is recognized as a USB 3.0 device is using the proper NEC drivers.
Other info that may be important:
-No overclocking settings in use.
-I made sure the cable was plugged in all the way. It's in as far as it can go, but the ports will still only act like USB 2.0 ports.
I might as well throw the card away if it is only going to act as a USB 2.0 device.

Is There Way To Block Specific Network
Feb 13, 2012I'm looking to block a specific network both wired and wirelessly and wondering if there is a way to do this. I spend to much time on the internet when at home. I can now lock the computers so that during specific times I can't access the home network. HOWEVER I would like to configure one laptop computer so that it can't hook up to the home network at all. Not being able to connect with the network either hard wire or wirelessly. I want to be able to take that computer to other locations though and be able to hook up wirelessly to them. So in other words I couldn't connect to the home network but can connect to other networks.

Mar 26, 2011Just formatted a laptop, reinstalled windows7 and all of the drivers. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 7738G-6006.
Here's the problem: To get the volume slider on the keyboard to work, I need to install Launch Manager. I found the download on the website and extracted it. When I run setup.exe though, absolutely nothing happens. It doesn't even show up for a split second in task manager.
I tried the same file on another computer and it ran just fine. I installed .Net framework as well as the C++ Runtime Distributable. No change. I've tried to run in compatibility as well as an administrator. I also tried Dependency Walker, it had this to say:
I tried downloading the new IE, no change, even tried DLing the DLL and putting it in the folder and that had no change either.

May 1, 2011I have a very odd issue that I cannot seem to figure out how to solve....memory tells me I think have had this problem before with this website about 2 years ago, but I cannot remember for the life of me how I solved it.Basically, the issue is this: I am an avid rally fan and usually check World Rally Championship every day.However, a few days ago I noticed that I would get a "The Connection Was Reset"error in Firefox 4.0.1 when trying to connect to it. The first time, I just thought maybe the site was down. The second day, I thought it was odd so I opened up IE9 and tried it there....it will not load in IE9 either. Then I thought, this is really odd, and tried it on my netbook and then and subsequently the other netbook and 2 other desktops in our house. The three desktops are connected to the net through our router via DHCP. The netbooks are on the same router via wireless DHCP. I tried restarting and resetting the router in case that was the issue, no go - internet works flawlessly on all the other computers and my desktop EXCEPT for that ONE site on my desktop.On both netbooks and the other 2 desktops, World Rally Championship loaded perfectly, so it must be an issue with my PC. I tried clearing the caches and cookies for both browsers, and I restarted this machine twice to no avail.

Unable To Run A Specific Game?
Jan 15, 2012i have a weird problem. I cannot run Microsoft's Age of Empires online, because an error msg appears -> Basically I must enable it in Parental Control. Now this is the problem. I use a custom Windows 7 install, I removed many parts of the OS to speed it up, and I removed parental control as well. So basically I don't have parental control in Windows, but this game is keep asking for enabling the game there.I registered on the official forum and tried to get some help...no luck. How could I solve this problem? AFAIK I cannot "download" Microsoft Windows 7's parental control and "install" it. I don't want to install the full OS just because of this, and I don't want to create another custom Windows 7 with parental controls enabled.

Cannot Copy Specific File From Usb
Dec 17, 2009since two days i am trying to copy a exe file from a usb stick to my machine.
i tried everything. completely disabled uac, logged on as "superadmin", gave all permissions that i could think of. but still.
the strange thing is that explorer does not even display the icon correctly. it shows only the "generic" exe icon.
everytime i try to copy the file windows tells me that i do not have the permission to make changes to the file.
btw:
- the file is not broken, nor is the usb stick. i tried it on another Windows 7 machine and it works just fine.
- tried to copy it on D: drive too... same problem.
- zipped the file. copied the zipped file successfully to the drive but when unzipping it the folder is empty without an error message.
- turned off defender and AV. just in case it thinks it's a bad file.
well, i never had this problem before. any ideas?
edit: i forgot to mention that this file on the usb is in the same folder with several other files which i can copy without any problems.
No Video On Specific Display?
Oct 26, 2011There I was trying to show off my HTPC to the INLAWS (darnit), and I get no picture when I enter Windows.This rig has worked perfectly on a 42" Vizio for a couple years now, but the only way I can get windows to display is in safe mode (not even low-resolution). The HDTV I am plugging into (HDMI) is a 40" Phillips. To make an odd thing even stranger, in dual display mode, if the TV is on a different input (such as T.V. or Xbox) I can see the computer recognizing it, modle number and all. The second I switch to the specific HDMI imput computer loses detection.

Sep 28, 2009I got hold of an official (legal) Windows 7 release through my college which has a deal with microsoft. This is not a beta or RC I am running. I have been running Windows 7 with no problems for 3 weeks now, and got all new parts and finally got rid of my single core cpu. put everything together, attatche harddrives, reinstalled and activated win 7 without error.
--I installed XP on one drive (drive0 labeled D and win 7 on the other (drive1 labeled C.
--i decided later that day after getting XP mode working that i didn't need the XP drive anymore and formatted it.
--I set the proper boot flags on the harddrive with 7 on it. but i get the "bootmgr missing" error, and have been unable to fix it. i used system recovery, and that put the MBR on the proper drive ( i also swaped the sata cables so Windows 7 drive is drive0 now) and i removed the other harddrive completely.
How do i fix the bootmgr with the recovery tools on the DVD?
Cannot See Specific Wireless Network?
Oct 1, 2010With my netbook Acer Aspire One 521 I have previously connected to both home and work wireless networks with no problems, however the work network no longer appears in the 'available connections' list. I get a variety of available connections from the local area (more than any other computer) but not the specific router I am looking for & sat next to!I can still connect at home no problems with the netbook (i.e the wireless adaptor is functional) and with my laptop I have no problems at work, nor do any of my colleagues - so the router is functioning correctly.I have tried:- restarting both netbook & router- checked the router is set to mixed (b&g signal type)- checked the wireless connections list for duplicate entries and tried deleting the saved previous entry for the work network- using a system restore point from when I could connect to the networkNo new software, antivirus/firewall etc.. have been installed since it has been working as I got all that up and running at home prior to taking it in to work.Laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium & netbook Windows 7 starter.
