I had a problem with a website while running Microsoft Security Essentials. I tried to reinstall MSE but I keep getting an error during the installation. I also tried to install AVG with no luck. It is like I can't install programs.
Windows 7 built in anti-virus & spyware programs.
Are they worth keeping?
On my XP, Avira worked just fine, along with some spyware programs.
Your thoughts.
My antivirus software prompted me to do a virus scan and after rebooting, I was no longer able to view any of my program files nor documents. I looked up at some posts and found that I had to one by one uncheck the "hidden" tab on the folders in the system. I was able to retrieve most of the files and programs, but not all of them. I still have a few programs that appear as "empty" on the start menu (i.e. Microsoft Office programs). Any other steps I should take to be able to launch all my programs in the Start Menu?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using Norton products since the day I bought a computer and have found that it is pretty much a resource hog when I am trying to play video games like the newest game Battlefield 3. What antivirus software is a low resource hog and does not take up many resources to run the computer? I would prefer free, but I can buy it as well if that needs to be necessary.

I had the win 7 antivirus, virus on my laptop, i used this site for instructions on removing this virus, I followed the instructions and it seems to have removed the virus. Now when I start the laptop the programs pinned to my startup menu do not start and if I want to start a program I have to start by right clicking and starting as system admin. Not sure what to do now to fix this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedA client of mine (I'm an IT summer temp in a production facility) recently contracted the Windows 7 Recovery virus and contacted me to fix it. Having encountered the XP version recently and resolved the issue, I was able to easily remove the virus and associated rootkit. The difference this time was that unhide.exe failed to restore the start>all programs menu shortcuts, although it did manage to restore the folder structure. I read through and followed the instructions of another thread here: [URL]. Which did not resolve the issue. The output given by SystemLook is as follows:

Spent today cleaning up fake AV-scan virus which hid all files. ComboFix has restored all of the files.Programs also all appear to be working, although all of the "All Programs" listings are empty. I can find and run them from Start search.Does anyone know of a way to repopulate the All Programs list without having to Repair/Reinstall the Programs, since they all work fine?

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo over the past few days it seems that I have lost control of my C drive and all of its contents.I can no longer properly access it, and everything opens in "Read-Only". I can no longer install programs or modify existing programs.According to the security permissions, I have none. Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.

View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).
McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.
This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.
I've had the ramnit virus on my computer. Long story short, i had to nuke my laptop to get rid of it. My problem is that the virus is on the USB stick. So is there anyway i can format the USB stick without the virus jumping onto my laptop?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble downloading from web pages. Everything that I try to download I can't. A window pops up in the bottom of my computer and says that the download contained a virus and was deleted. I am an online student and need some guidance. This has been going on for two weeks now. I don not have an anti virus anymore because I did a system restore and it wiped out my antivirus protection, and since everything that I try to download contains a virus and is deleted, I cannot get another anti virus. I even tried using my flash drive

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was infected by a virus. It makes the shift key get repeatedly pressed over and over. This happened to me before and I solved it by scanning with MalwareBytes and AVG. When I went to scan with MalwareBytes it needed updating, so I let it. Unluckily for me MalwareBytes thought it would be kind and restart the computer without my consent. Now, due to the virus, I can't login to my account to do anything, even in safe mode.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials and now I think I have some sort of virus. Within minutes of logging onto my computer, a message keeps popping up that there is a critical error and that the computer will restart within one minute. I have tried to do anything I possibly can to get rid of this issue! It does the same thing while booting up in safemode as well. I also tried to restore my computer to a previous date before this occurred, and it still keeps happening. I figured i'd try to restore it to factory settings also, but it does not give me the option while booting up (f11), or on my control panel. I also tried using the TDSSkiller but my computer reboots before the scanning/fixing finishes.

I have tried Installing AVG, running an Rkill that i downloaded last year and have done a System Restore as far back as possible but still my computer becomes unresponsive and wont open any programs unless i'm in safe mode.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am now struggling with a virus that seems to have imbedded itself in my windows 7 system.I tend not to use it too regularly but the boyfriend does use it to play games in Facebook. I am running a Norton antivirus which has been pretty good up till now. The computer seems to be running fine but my email account has been hijacked and on finding this out I have checked the computer and tried to perform a scan of both the windows system and also my accounts to no avail. The desktop symbols are all in place but none of them are working. I have also tried running a scan in safe mode, once again it would not work. The task manager did not show any action with regards to the antivirus scan that I had requested it to perform.
