Built In Anti-virus / Spyware Programs

Windows 7 built in anti-virus & spyware programs.

Are they worth keeping?

On my XP, Avira worked just fine, along with some spyware programs.

Your thoughts.

Action Center Falsely Reporting Antivirus And Anti Spyware Programs Turned Off
I have tried two of the "approved" security suites for Win7 RC1 namely, Kaspersky and TrendMicroThe action center periodically warns that these programs have turned offThe Programs themself show that they are on and activeI have to assume that there is a problem with the action center and not with the progams themself. Is this a known issue?

Super Anti-Spyware Blue Screens
Super Anti-Spyware has blue screened Windows 7 twice.  Every time it gets to the part (near the end of installation, ACTUALLY Setup) where you select your language.  English is default which is what I want, and went I click OK, I get the blue screen every time as soon as I click OK.

Is this a problem with 7?  Or, is Super Anti-Spyware not ready for 7?

Light Anti Virus Program
i just installed CLEAN install of Windows 7 Upgrade (OEM) and it takes 45 seconds to boot up YAY

but ever since i installed norto n360. 2 minutes? i hate resource hogging programs.

I am looking for an anti virus that is super great that barely affects your pc boot up (or no effects at all to make pc boot faster) and well, not a resource hog that makes ur computer crash.

so any suggestions for what antivirus programs (i need people who actually tried the product and has experienced it, not just suggestions without knowing) fits what i am looking for? i am currently using norton 360 3.0 its good but slows my laptop.

Anti Virus Is No Longer Supported
For about 3 days sometimes i've got messages from Action Center to check my AV. When i open Action Center, i can see this:

http://yfrog.com/14avactioncenterp

I've got the newest AVG Free version, which works both on WinXP, WinVista and Win7. Problem Reporting Tool and TroubleShooter didn't found any errors. Oh, and i've got the newest virus DB updates.

Avira Anti Virus Compatibility
This is what it says when I attempt to update:

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

For these items, make the following changes:

Uninstall these programs. Open Control Panel and search for "uninstall a program".

Avira AntiVirus

Now I un-installed Avira about a year ago. Avira is not in my program list, nor in my data files. I cannot find any source of Avira anywhere throughout my system, and it won't let me upgrade without 'un-installing' it.

Reliable And Compatible Anti Virus Software
Looking for reliable and compatible Anti Virus Software on Windows 7 64x.

After reading so many posting on the ServenForums I kind of layout these are the best 3 antivirus software, they are AVG Free Edition , Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

I had serious nightmare using AVG Free Edition on my Windows 7 x64, which constantly causing program or opening up file not responding. I honestly do not think I will go back on AVG again (Also, it takes too much memory on real time protection as well as scanning threads).

I would like to hear from everyone to see which one of the above anti-virus program is best in terms of Security Protection, Compatibilities to Windows 7 and performance.

What would everyone recommended the most ?

What Anti Virus Software Is Compatible With Windows 7 ?
I partitioned my HD to dual boot Vista and 7.  I tried to find AV software for 7, but I got an error message and couldn't get anything.  So I unistalled 7 and deleted the partition.  I would like to try again.  How do I get AV software?  I'm not going to run 7 without any, and I don't want to do a clean install and get rid of Vista.  I want to be able to do a dual-boot.  I have Norton 2009 for Vista.  I contacted Symantec, and they said Norton 2009 is not compatible with Win 7.

MSE - Free AV, Mal / Spyware Programs
I'm running Win 7 64 bit. On my previous systems, I generally rely on the following 3 free utilities for system protection:

- Avira AntiVir

- Spybot Search and Destroy

- Ad-aware

I've heard a lot of good things about Microsoft Security Essentials, and at least as a AV tool it's up there with Avira, Avast, etc. But how about its effectiveness as a malware / spyware blocker, detector, and remover?

Can it safely replace all 3 of the aforementioned products? Or should I use something else in conjunction with MSE?

VIPRE Antivirus / Anti Malware Compatibility
I have installed the latest version of VIPRE anti-virus into a new install of RC1 (32-bit and 64-bit). It appears to install correctly and the Action centre reports that the anti-virus component is ON. The Anti-spyware component, however, reports it is "currently not being monitored", after I had to manually turn off Windows Defender.

There is an added message under virus protection indicating "Sunbelt VIPRE is .... reporting its status to Windows Security Center in a format that is no longer supported."

I have not had this problem with the original Beta build (7000). Does anyone know if something has changed recently?

As for other posts reporting problems installing AV solutions, I can report that, apart from the integration issue above, the current release for XP and Vista (which is not free, I have to add) installs fine and runs fine.

I've been unable to reload any Dell drivers--coming back unsupported. Have been unable to load the Dell Utility to manage drivers/downloads.  Any help appreciated.

Also, is Windows Defender & Firewall enough? I had OneCare which is not supported either($50 down the drain)...what about Virus protection I don't have to pay for?

Virus From Boot Disk Download
To all that may be having problems and need assistance: STAY AWAY from the website FREE PC TECH! I was looking for a problem with one of my XP laptops, was steered to it on a forum (tom's computing net) and downloaded three boot discs. Today, MSE caught the viruses and removed them from my laptop. The most severe one, I forgot to write down the name of it, but it was a password stealer. The other two (medium risk) were Tool:Win32/Angryscan.A & Remote Access:Win32/RealVNC.

These two were said to be a privacy risk or could cause computer damage. There are a whole page of boot and recovery discs here, but stay away. It took a while, but MSE fixed the problems. I'm beginning to be impressed with MSE. Usually, Avast places these files in the virus chest, but MSE deleted or destroyed them.

HP PAVILION Built-in Webcam
Who knows how many people complained for following issue BUILT-IN WEBCAM WON'T WORK UNDER WINDOWS 7RC!

All right, I have the same problem, but I just could't find similar thread on any forum.

So, I installed win7 RC over win 7 beta (clean install not an update).

Everything went smoothly, drivers all found and instaled, device manager showing no yellow exclamation triangles.

Every bit of hardware is in place, everything works perfectly according to system diagnostic.

BUT, webcam shows no picture. Driver is properly installed and has no collisions with other system resources.

Interesting thing was, that camera was working excellent under win 7 beta. I don't know what has changed in win 7RC, but camera just won't start.

If anyone has any solution or similar issue, please don't hesitate to post a reply.

Oh yeah, my configuration:

HP PAVILION dv 6670el Entertainment PC
intel core2duo 2.0 GHz
2GB RAM
160GB HDD
NVIDIA 8400gs video card

HP built-in webcam (at least that's what system information says) 1.3Mpix

Built-in H 264 Codec Glitches
I am having troubles with the Win7 built-in H264 codec. It seems to be buggy and produces some blocky artifacts in a few of my videos (I am trying to play a MP4 container with H264/AAC).

This shouldn't be too much of a problem since 3rd party codecs do render the video just fine. But...

I can use these 3rd party codecs in other DirectShow players, but WMP always seems to fall back to the built-in codec, whatever I try!

What can MS do to fix this situation? I don't really care whether the built-in codec gets fixed, or WMP loads 3rd party plug-in, but as it currently stands, I can't watch my video in WMP.

Why No Built-in RAW Image Support ?
There is a RAW image viewer power toy available for XP which doesn't seem to work with 7. It would be nice to not even have to go through the trouble of installing the power toys and just have them built right in to the OS. Another useful one that comes to mind is the Image Resizer.  I think one of my biggest gripes with all versions of Windows is having to go and install applications that are used for common computing tasks such as viewing / editing images.
