The default copy switch of robocopy is /COPYAT if you don't specify any copy options. This is the code I'm using:

The RAMDisk.img file that I'm copying is a compressed image file. Now with that syntax /COPYAT will be used which means that it will copy all attributes of that file. Whenever I run this, I successfully copy the file but it doesn't retain the compression attribute of that file.
Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a rights issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up?

However, it generates an extraordinary volume of output to the screen; starting with a header, then a list of the copied files and some statistics. This gets annoying when I'm running a BAT file to copy thousands of files. Is there a way to suppress that and only display one line indicating the file that was copied?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm transfering around 216GB of files from my old hard drive to my new one using a SATA->USB converter cable (I only have one HDD slot). Using robocopy to transfer the files, the system freezes completely - nothing responds at all and any status LEDs that are lit at the time remain lit. My only option is to turn off the power. The clock will show the time of the crash (i.e., it stops).
I've yet to 'witness' the crash, but when I leave the computer alone for a bit and come back later on, I find it locked up.
Strangely, since then, I'm now using a normal drag+drop to copy the files, and it hasn't crashed in all the time it's been copying so far.
There's nothing in the event logs... Any ideas?
So I've just got myself a Crucial M4 256GB and want to move my existing Win 7 x64 installation off my HDD and on to my SSD.I've done all the preliminaries in Diskpart and have the drive marked as active. The last step is to copy all the files across (rather than use cloning software) with Robocopy.However, even in an elevated command prompt I'm getting 'Access is denied' errors on the important stuff.I've tried this using the Windows 7 install DVD and within Windows Vista x86 (the HDD is a dual boot with 2 partitions; one containing 7 x64 and the other Vista x86).

C: was swapped to e: while the drive that I would like users on is f:I've tried it with and without /copyall. I've tried changing the switch to - instead of /, and I've tried using /xjd instead. But every single time, robocopy skips 37 (of 195) directories and the process fails.Does this guide simply not work? Or am I missing something? I'd really like to move the whole thing (especially Appdata), not just documents.I'm using upgrade media of Windows 7 home premium 64bit and a fresh installation of Windows 7 (unactivated as yet - though I had the same problem before with a fully updated/activated version of windows.)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've set up a back up batch file to copy my Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders from my computer to an external hard drive. However, while running the Documents backup, it seems to find, the pictures, music, and videos folders all inside the documents folders labelled "My Music", etc. However, these folders do not exist. When I navigate in explorer to C:UsersusernameDocuments I cannot find a folder labelled "My Music". When I try to navigate to C:UsersusernameDocumentsMy Music it tells me that "access is denied". I cannot find them through command line either. As well, when I try and find the folders on the backup drive, they do not seem to be there either.

What I have been trying to do is to copy the "C:Users", "C:Program Files", & "C:Program Files (x86)" to another clean hard drive "D:".I'm doing this to make more room for the OS in the C: drive while date will be in the D: drive. Now I have successfully robocopy Program Files & Program Files (x86). I also have copied most of the Users directory but for this stubborn Realupdate directory. This is I think the real player program. I get this Access Denied and "Error 5" error. I am in elevated command prompt. I achieved this via the Repair your computer prompt on the Windows install DVD.I also have rmdir for Program Files & Program Files and have made a mklink for both of them so windows knows where they will be. But I have not did a full boot because I don't think windows will access my Users directory because they have been moved over to the new drive. What I can only do will have to be via the command prompt.
I can't make a mklink for Users because I get an error saying something about duplicate areas? What I was trying to do is go to this Realupdate directory but even trying to access that directory via cd commands will not work, giving me a access denied. Again I am in elevated command prompt Administrator:X:windowssystem32cmd.exe How can I get to that directory. I just want to delete it now since I have all the files I need. I just want to create a junction point for Users directory linked to the D: drive. I used the following command: mklink "D:Users" C:Users" /JGrant it the D and C are turned around but in Windows Recovery Console it mixes up the drive letters but I know what is the source drive and destination drive. I verified this via the Volume Drive Titles.
I was working on my files when suddenly all icons turned into Adobe Reader icons. The suggestion was to uninstall Adobe Reader (I did), save Windows 7, then fix the registry, etc. or try to reinstall Adobe Reader. After three tries using a different browser and the icons reappearing all over the desktop, blocking all other items, I decided to follow Cnet suggestion to install FOXIT 5.0 Reader. I did and I can read all my files perfectly.I was afraid to mess up Windows 7, the Registry and who knows what else.

My husband had 100s of music CDs loaded on his laptop. so these recovery discs include all that music. He had his computer system restored by Geek squad with windows 7. But we can't figure out how to restore this stack of discs with all of his music. We've searched on windows help with no luck. He puts the disc into the e: drive and the files are visible. You know the procedure, deleting old files which are no longer relevant and deleting stuff that I no longer want and stuff that somehow I have repeatedly located in different directories, getting everything rationalised and organised.The sort of files that I am deleting are Word and Excel files, .pdf Adobe files, downloaded program files that I scan prior to installing, zip files and folders and folders containing files - nothing out of the ordinary really!A couple of days later I notice those damned files that I know I deleted, (and I made sure that the Recycle Bin was cleared out too), have all somehow been reinstated to exactly where I deleted them from.I do perform a backup to an external hard drive once a week. The drive is a Seagate and I am using the Seagate backup software, but this shouldn't be causing this - should it? I'm only backing up, I'm not asking for it to restore anything.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm going to be a university student at Indiana University in the fall, so during orientation I picked up a student version of Windows 7 Ultimate for my HP Compaq laptop, which I bought back when Vista was brand new --I cant afford a new laptop right now, and the hardware is still good anyway. I will be upgrading from Windows Vista Basic.
My school's IT department recommends doing a "clean" install to avoid any software problems after the installation. I don't really know what the difference between a clean install versus a regular one would be, but I have the IT department's instructions on how to do a clean, custom install, instead of the standard upgrade. I want my computer to work well with the school's network, so I am fine with that.
The only thing that makes me uncomfortable is that they say custom upgrades delete all of my computer's files. I have external hard drive and did a complete backup this afternoon.All of my information is safely stored on my external terabyte. My only question is, how do I sync all of my files from the external hard drive back onto my computer after this is done? I want to make sure it's possible to put everything back on my computer before I go doing this custom installation and erasing everything.

Upon searching the web as to whether I could delete these 920 Mbs of files with impunity and whether I should, there were many differences of opinion. Since I have often been guided by Tech Support Guy, I thought I would solicit the opinion of all of you. While I do not really need the extra space that removal of these 920 Mbs would provide, since I have 54% of free space, I am just uncomfortable with what I believe may be unnecessary files hanging around on my computer.

I tried using the Emergency Backup and that recovered a couple of my old files. But there are still a lot of files that couldn't be recovered by the backup. Is there anyway I can recover other files that were lost when I formatted? I've tried a few things like Pandora Recovery and EASEUS, but they didn't do exactly what I wanted them to. They seemed to only be able to recover certain file types and not special file types. Any way I can restore all the files I had before I accidentally formatted?

This has happened before but I was able to do a system restore and bring back all the settings, files, and programs. I tried the same thing today but the restore failed (it still failed after I followed its advice to turn the anti-virus off and then run restore) so I've got a large amount of files (pictures, music, documents) missing that I am hoping are still on the hard drive somewhere.

Access denied, file in use, You don't have permission. Something thinks these files are in use and they are not. If you reboot the computer they all clear but it comes back on different files. This time, after backing up all my files to disc (15), in total, I have taken this HP laptop back to factory condition. There is no problem there. The restore is fine but I cant seem to load the discs I created. I have turned off the laptop completely, as directed and started it again with the alt f10 keys, which should automatically load my back up but nothing is happening and if I try to open the discs on their own, I get an error message saying that the path isn't there. I have already re-installed my various purchased software but it is the photos and personal files that I particularly want to get back. Just recently, I noticed all of the IP Camera avi files seemed to have disappeared from my documents if I went directly to the folder... When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a system with 32gb DDR3-2400, a 256GB SSD and a couple of spinners. I have set up 4gb of the RAM to be used as another RAMdisk using the softperfect software. This problem has been going on for some time, but has been more of a problem since I started using the RAMdisk. Not because the RAMdisk itself isn't working well, because the stuff that is stored there keeps getting reset.I have pretty much identified that when updates are installed through windows update (either from Microsoft update or from my WSUS server), the following are reset to defaults
1. Pagefile is automatically managed and stored on the C: drive and is set to 32gb
2. The TEMP and TMP environment variables are reset to the C:users default location
3. The temporary Internet Files location is reset to the default C:users... location
There may be others that I have not discovered.I have manually set my swap file to 1024/2048 on the D: drive (a spinner), on the belief that it should rarely if ever be needed with a system equipped with 32GB of RAM. I'm certainly not inclined to waste 32GB of space on my SSD for an unused object.I have placed the TMP/TEMP files, cookies and Temporary Internet files on the RAMdisk to squeeze a little extra performance out of the system. (Yes, I know, I'm not really getting much benefit).Photoshop and a few other programs also use the RAMdisk as a scratch disk, and were the main reason I set it up in the first place.This is becoming a real pain when it gets reset as I have to manually change everything again. Anyone know a way to make windows leave settings at what I set them, instead of having it continually reset the values to what it wants? I'd prefer to have it my way. I know there will be proponents of "leave things as windows wants it".
