Installed New SSD / Having Robocopy Failures

Oct 19, 2012

So I've just got myself a Crucial M4 256GB and want to move my existing Win 7 x64 installation off my HDD and on to my SSD.I've done all the preliminaries in Diskpart and have the drive marked as active. The last step is to copy all the files across (rather than use cloning software) with Robocopy. However, even in an elevated command prompt I'm getting 'Access is denied' errors on the important stuff.I've tried this using the Windows 7 install DVD and within Windows Vista x86 (the HDD is a dual boot with 2 partitions; one containing 7 x64 and the other Vista x86).

Back Up Files Using Robocopy?

Apr 7, 2012

The default copy switch of robocopy is /COPYAT if you don't specify any copy options. This is the code I'm using:

[code]...

The RAMDisk.img file that I'm copying is a compressed image file. Now with that syntax /COPYAT will be used which means that it will copy all attributes of that file. Whenever I run this, I successfully copy the file but it doesn't retain the compression attribute of that file.

Possible To Run Robocopy In Abbreviated Mode?

Jan 18, 2012

I use Robocopy to do a lot of copies. However, it generates an extraordinary volume of output to the screen; starting with a header, then a list of the copied files and some statistics. This gets annoying when I'm running a BAT file to copy thousands of files. Is there a way to suppress that and only display one line indicating the file that was copied?

System Freezes When Using Robocopy

Sep 10, 2009

I'm transfering around 216GB of files from my old hard drive to my new one using a SATA->USB converter cable (I only have one HDD slot). Using robocopy to transfer the files, the system freezes completely - nothing responds at all and any status LEDs that are lit at the time remain lit. My only option is to turn off the power. The clock will show the time of the crash (i.e., it stops).

I've yet to 'witness' the crash, but when I leave the computer alone for a bit and come back later on, I find it locked up.

Strangely, since then, I'm now using a normal drag+drop to copy the files, and it hasn't crashed in all the time it's been copying so far.

There's nothing in the event logs... Any ideas?

Robocopy Skipping Folders (moving C:users)?

Mar 8, 2012

I'm attempting to use the guide posted on lifehacker to move the users folder to a different drive as Windows 7 is installed on a rather small SSD.The guide is here: Move the Users Directory in Windows 7I followed the directions to the letter, except of course, when it came to fixing the drive letters. C: was swapped to e: while the drive that I would like users on is f:I've tried it with and without /copyall. I've tried changing the switch to - instead of /, and I've tried using /xjd instead. But every single time, robocopy skips 37 (of 195) directories and the process fails.Does this guide simply not work? Or am I missing something? I'd really like to move the whole thing (especially Appdata), not just documents.I'm using upgrade media of Windows 7 home premium 64bit and a fresh installation of Windows 7 (unactivated as yet - though I had the same problem before with a fully updated/activated version of windows.)

Robocopy Copying Folders From The Wrong Place

Jan 15, 2013

I've set up a back up batch file to copy my Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders from my computer to an external hard drive. However, while running the Documents backup, it seems to find, the pictures, music, and videos folders all inside the documents folders labelled "My Music", etc. However, these folders do not exist. When I navigate in explorer to C:UsersusernameDocuments I cannot find a folder labelled "My Music". When I try to navigate to C:UsersusernameDocumentsMy Music it tells me that "access is denied". I cannot find them through command line either. As well, when I try and find the folders on the backup drive, they do not seem to be there either.

Robocopy - Access Denied Error 5 Real Directory?

Jul 18, 2012

I know similar questions have been asked but I "might" have a unique one. What I have been trying to do is to copy the "C:Users", "C:Program Files", & "C:Program Files (x86)" to another clean hard drive "D:".I'm doing this to make more room for the OS in the C: drive while date will be in the D: drive. Now I have successfully robocopy Program Files & Program Files (x86). I also have copied most of the Users directory but for this stubborn Realupdate directory. This is I think the real player program. I get this Access Denied and "Error 5" error. I am in elevated command prompt. I achieved this via the Repair your computer prompt on the Windows install DVD.I also have rmdir for Program Files & Program Files and have made a mklink for both of them so windows knows where they will be. But I have not did a full boot because I don't think windows will access my Users directory because they have been moved over to the new drive. What I can only do will have to be via the command prompt.

I can't make a mklink for Users because I get an error saying something about duplicate areas? What I was trying to do is go to this Realupdate directory but even trying to access that directory via cd commands will not work, giving me a access denied. Again I am in elevated command prompt Administrator:X:windowssystem32cmd.exe How can I get to that directory. I just want to delete it now since I have all the files I need. I just want to create a junction point for Users directory linked to the D: drive. I used the following command: mklink "D:Users" C:Users" /JGrant it the D and C are turned around but in Windows Recovery Console it mixes up the drive letters but I know what is the source drive and destination drive. I verified this via the Volume Drive Titles.

[SECURITY] Robocopy / View Backed Up Files On External Drive?

May 18, 2012

Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a rights issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up?

Intermittent Startup Failures?

Oct 16, 2011

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) that was on sale at Costco. It arrived on Thursday, October 13. However, from the beginning it doesn't always start up correctly. About 4 times out of 12 it got up to the "Starting Windows..." screen, but the 4 lights don't come together to form the windows logo (that's the startup animation). Each time I did a hard reset, and then it would ask if I wanted to run Startup Repair.First time: I think this was before I even installed any of my own programs. Tried running Startup Repair... which failed to start up, and I reset again.

Second time: Immediately following the first, I decided to run Windows normally without Startup Repair, and it worked.Third time: I decided to try Startup Repair again. It went through this time, and when prompted to try a System Restore I did.Fourth time: ...apparently that didn't work, because it happened again. This one happened when I started it for the first time this morning, 10/16. I noticed that the Seagate Drive was attached when I started it this morning. I did another System Restore.Fifth time: 10/16. Pressed F8 and tried to start with Boot Logging. Not sure if ntbtlog.txt recorded the failure, or only the following time when I tried to boot in safe mode. (Safe Mode did work the one time I tried that)

Windows 7 Install Failures

Jan 20, 2013

I am trying to install Windows 7 Professional Edition onto a Doctor's machine (currently Vista) and the machine absolutely will not allow for a Windows 7 install, 32 or 64 bit. When I either do a clean install, or an upgrade...the machine will error out or go to a black screen with a blinking cursor and will not progress any farther. Windows Vista however will install without an issue. The Windows 7 install will not complete so I can't boot into a safe mode and see if it is a driver issue.

URL]

- I have tried multiple Windows 7 Pro install disks built form an ISO (32 and 64 bit). I tried more than one in case my install disk was corrupted.

- I have tried an official 'Dell' Windows 7 CD...same issue

- Ran a full Hardware diagnostic...no issues

- Changed hard drive in case hard drive was corrupted...replicated issue

- Can uninstall and reinstall Windows Vista with no problem.

- I tried installing Windows XP for giggles and it bluescreens with a hardware/software error.

- The doctor had a Windows 7 upgrade CD...so I reinstalled Vista and tried to upgrade...same issue.

- There is a hardware warranty on the machine, but Dell wants he doctor to upgrade to software warranty before they will address. Ran hardware diagnostics with Dell on the phone, they concur it isn't hardware related.

Sata drive in the machine, so I have read for 'compatibility' settings...but the bios version this machine has...I do not see an option for that.

Windows 7 Multiple USB Device Failures Across PCs

Apr 26, 2012

I have been building my own PCs for 20 years. Just upgraded my main home office PC to Win7 64 bit a few months ago - no major issues until now. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed my Magic Jack USB dongle was dead. No blue light, no nothing, just a brick. The weird part is that I first plugged it into my wifes PC (also a win7 desktop) and also a win7 laptop sitting in my office room. Same behavior. No reaction at all, windows didnt make a peep (it should have launched the magic jack installer, which is built into the dongle) and no blue light.

OK, so fine, stuff does "fry" once in a while. So I wait for the dongle replacement. When it arrives, I plug it in. Silence. I try it on the other machines. NADA. NO REACTION, just like the first one. I try their support chat again. They finally after 4 hours of doing the same things over and over again gave me essentially the boot by telling me to unplug the router (which of course meant that I had to end the chat). Of course, no improvement. As unlikely a sit would seem, I somehow had two dead magic jack dongles, one of them brand new. That to me was borderline impossible. But wait it gets worse.

I then notice that ONE of the 2 external HDDs I have is dead as well. But all of them still works fine. Also, a couple other USB devices work fine still. and of course I have tried every permutation of USB port and hub or not and try all the ports and on and on. So again, I have a situation where SOME of my USB devices dont work (so far 2 magic jack dongles and an HDD). No power, they are not detected at all by win 7. And this is on 4 PCs in the home. All win7. But how could 3 devices fail for no reason at once?

Finally, I also then noticed when trying to do a skype call that my logitech webcam is dead. Same behavior, and it had been working fine. Without even thinking, I order a new webcam. I am now up to 4 "dead" USB devices, and remember these are all "dead" and have the same completely lifeless behavior on all 4 home PCs (all are win 7, 2 desktops, 2 laptops), and again all of the PCs do have working USB devices attached also, so it isnt a complete USB failure. The final straw was today when the new webcam came (a MS lifecam-500). I ran the software and plugged in the cam wehn it told me to and voila - said I didnt have a camera attached. Again, tried it on my other PCs - same thing.

Now I know something is wrong beyond the devices, because the odds that 5 devices all failed all of a sudden (2 of them brand new out of the box) is beyond measure. So I have been on the forums for about 8 hours now trying every variant of deleting/reinstalling USB drivers, because win 7 and drivers are all that I think these issues have in common, they all exhibit the same behavior on the same OS (on multiple machines). I have seen several other post the same issue, but many seem to be able to resolve it via a hard power cycle with removal of power cord/battery. I have tried all of this of course, no joy.

Persistent Hangups & Failures To Boot Windows 7, Priority Changes?

Dec 28, 2012

HPE-400f Pavilion has been crashing to black screen with cursor with problems booting windows 7. Was getting BIOHD4 error code, then BIOHD3 -- Warning: No Active Partition. Installed 2 spare hard drives to alleviate crowding but problem continues. In troubleshooting have noticed the boot-up priority order keeps changing, so that the HDD group is not first, and also so the main - OS C: - hard drive is not on top of the list. Correcting these problems allows windows to boot up just fine, but then random crashes or bootup failures continue (constantly).Have taken everything out and reconnected, done a clean install from HP disks (reformatting and wiping the HD), system repair, virus scans, etc., yet problem continues. How can I fix the boot-up routines so the computer keeps them as they should be and doesn't keep rearranging them on its own thereby causing Windows to hang up?

Device Status - No Driver Installed But Driver IS Installed

Sep 19, 2012

Every now and then my WiFi stops working, and if I go to dev mgr, the General tab tells me that "No drivers are installed for this device" for device status. On the other tabs, however, I have all the details on the installed driver, and if I ask Windows to update the driver, it tells me that the best driver is already installed. The problem is solved by rebooting, but I find that annoying. I'd like to figure out WHY it does that. I've saved earlier versions of that particular driver from over the last three years, and the problem occurs with all of the drivers. This is a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit system. The driver is an Intel driver; the one installed at this moment (it just happened again, and I have not rebooted, since I had a powerline enet outlet handy), and the version of the Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN is 14.3.1. I have other versions of that driver saved, from 13.2.1.5 to 15.1.1_Ds64. I had reverted to the 14.3.1 because the more recent versions seemed to be worse about the driver disabling itself or whatever it is doing.Coincidentally with this, the event viewer shows that mmc.exe was terminated because it was hanging. I had just run sfc yesterday, and there are no corrupt files that Windows cannot fix, and there weren't even any corrupt files that it DID fix.

Did UNetbootin Installed Something Else

Apr 28, 2011

i just wanted to have a USB boot-able pen drive in case of emergency, and i found that the UNet booting software could take my image and put it into a USB stick, everything seems right but when i started the process i see the "Restart" option at the 4th stepmy problem question its quite simple.WHY?why it ask me to restart? i suspect that it wast created in order that just after you finish creating the boot-able USB restart to try it but why if i don't want, i just wanted to make a copy and to save the usb stick in a safe place and continue working but what is my fear about it? and what about if that intrusive software has made any modification in my system? because no necessarily the system i use to run the program is the system i need to boot from usb..and what about this?:the software webpage says:http://unetbootin. sourceforge.net/For the Hard Disk / "frugal install" mode, UNet booting uses a Windows or Linux-based installer to install a small modification to the boot loader (bootmgr and bcdedit on Vista, grldr and boot.ini for NT-based systems, grub.exe and config.system for Win9x, or GRUB on Linux, uses the boot loader to boot the desired distribution's installer or to load the system utility, no CD required. After the distribution has been installed, or once done using the system utility, the modification to the boot-loader is then undone.
