D-link DWA 120 USB Problem
Im hoping someone can help me with my wireless issue. I have a D-link DWA 120 usb adaptor connected to a new Windows 7 RC (x64) build. The problem is that I am unable to get the darn thing to work.

First of all when I plug it into the cradle it does not even blink. Plugged it directly to the PC and still does not light up. Even though it appears in device manager as "!USB WLAN device". When I try to update the driver automatically it says "Windows could not find driver software..". I then try to specify a location but that returns the same error above.

I have tried to run the setup in compatibility mode as per the instructions I found on this site and although the installtion appears to complete successfully, I still dont have it working.

RC 1 Warning (Alcohol 120%) And (Incompatible Drivers)
I've been heavily testing Windows 7 RC on my main system.  Mainly because while yes it is my main system and not recommended, it is the best way for me to test the OS in real world circumstances day to day.  While doing so I installed the latest version of Alcohol 120%, which claims to be Windows 7 compatible.

Here's the warning.  It both is and isn't at the same time.  It will install.  It will allow for virtual drives and it will burn.  However, the driver it uses wreaks havoc with your drives.  While installing all my software, and I have a lot... Mainly games.  You will constantly get CRC errors.  Mainly in the form of Windows claiming that a file being install doesn't match the file in the installer and or cabinets.  Something to that effect.

At first I thought it was Nero 8, so I reformatted and reinstalled Windows and Alcohol 120%, but not Nero.  I tried installing a game I confirmed as one with issues getting CRC errors prior to installing Alcohol.  Installed perfectly.  Installed Alcohol, and installed another game I had confirmed CRC issues with... CRC issue back... Can't install... Reformatted again and this time installed Nero immediately, but not Alcohol and tried the same game that wouldn't install agian as I already had control result listed.

Now it installs perfectly and all other games that had CRC issues before now install perfectly.  So don't install the latest version of Alcohol 120% as while the software itself does work, the driver thats installed causes so many CRC issues with your drives that it's not worth.  It's even caused issues with some of my patch files for updating games, such as the 1.2 patch for Crysis.

The Crysis 1.2 patch won't install if you've installed Alcohol 120 as the file needs to access the crysis disc during installation or it won't install.  And if Alcohol is installed, it comes up with an error during patch install right at the point where it checks the disc that prevents installation of the patch.  Sorry if I've over explained it, but issue has been bugging me 3 days and I finally managed to narrow it down to Alcohol, so I thought I'd warn everyone here before the run into the same nightmare.

Now for the suggestion regarding incompatible drivers:

I love the fact that Windows 7 warns you about incompatible drivers being blocked when they start and at startup.  The problem for many of PC techs is we are usually able to tell if a driver is critical or not.  If it is, then we can find a new one that is compatible.  If not, we know it could be deleted without any ill effect.  And if we don't know...... if we at least know what the driver is for, we can test the program to see if the program will still run without it.

Here's my example.  While installing my games, on one of them, the game installer automatically installs the protection software for the game.  In my case Darkstar One is the one in question here.  On installation it installs a driver for Tages Protection for verifying the original disc.  The problem is the driver for this protection software is incompatible with Windows 7.

The great thing is Windows automatically blocks and tells you so.  So I test the game and it works perfectly... It didn't need the driver.  It still checked the disc and verified it.  But Windows still warns me that it's blocked every start up.  Now I know you can tell windows not to show the warning for that particular driver again, but I would feel more comfortable if there was another option.  If the driver is not compatible and as a result can't be used, and it's not detrimental to the program, then there's no need to keep the driver on the system.

It would be nice if there was another option on the warning that pops up to delete the incompatible driver all together instead of the OS just not showing the error anymore.  Because even if it doesn't show the warning at start up, it's still logged in the event logs in at every start up.

I know I won't see it unless I actually go looking for it in those event logs after I tell it not to show warning anymore. I'd still just prefer to be able to delete it altogether and know it's gone for good.  Especially since you can't prevent the incompatible driver from being installed in the first place.  In short, it would be nice to be given the option to delete confirmed incompatible drivers altogether in the "Incompatible Driver Blocked" popup warning.

That's what I have for now.  I hope someone finds the warning helpful, and hope others agree with the suggestion.  I will post regular updates as I come across issues that I can "confirm" as Windows 7 issues and software compatibility issues and not user error issues.  Windows 7 looks very promising and so far am liking it a lot better than Vista.

Screensaver Grace Period
I've got Windows 7 RC on a second PC that I've been using for a few weeks now, and it is driving me nuts. We policy out a screensaver lock at 10 minutes, and since it's a secondary computer, I often don't touch it for 10 minutes.

With XP, there is a registry setting that allows a "grace" period after the screensaver kicks in and before the password kicks on. Normally it's 4 or 5 seconds I believe. Windows 7 doesn't seem to have this.

I created the registry key that worked in XP, but it doesn't seem to be working in Windows 7.

Anyone else noticed this, know of a fix, or am I just crazy? I've tried googeling this, but I haven't been able to find any details for Windows 7.

How To Set Screensaver Grace Period ?
I am trying to set the Screen Saver Grace Period in Windows 7.

For those that are unaware. The Screen Saver Grace Period specifies the delay between the appearance of a password-protected screen saver and the enforcement of the password requirement.

Other Windows operating systems have used the following registry key.

HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogonScreenSaverGracePeriod : REG_SZ

Microsoft's documentation incorrects states that this registry value should be of type REG_DWORD.

Regardless, I have tried both and neither work. I have also tried "HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon" and that doesn't work either.

Does anyone have this working?

Out of interest we use Windows 7 Enterprise (with a mixture of 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems).

Network Lost After Period Of Inactivity
I just installed a technet copy of Windows 7 32bit. I'm having strange problems with networking. All drivers are up to date, the computer power plan is set to high performance and all options that can make the computer or any of the components "go to sleep" are shut off..

After a "period" of inactivity (I can't say how long it actually takes) the computer looses its netwok connection. I have to disable / enable the network connection, or restart the computer to get the connection working again.

I already unchecked the power management options on the adapter itself, but it doesn't help. The motherboard is brand new, and has already been tested with other versions of windows, which do work.

Any ideas?

Can't Extend Partition
So I have 30Gigs on my Windows 7 Partition, which was fine for a while, but I want to use Windows 7 more extensively now so I wanted to extend my partition. I have looked at the tutorial posted in the tutorials, and its as simple as right-clicking the partition and clicking 'Extend Volume'. Well the problem is that no matter what I try, this option is always grayed out. Whenever I right-click any of my partitions, all of the options are available except for 'Extend Volume'. Am I missing a step here, or am I not doing something right?

Extend Primary Partition
Running out of space and I'd like to extend my primary (C) partition to the next drive (D) but in computer management D is listed as "Page file, Logical drive" and it will not allow me to delete it.

Would moving page file from D to E partition allow me to extend C into D? If so, how do I move page file in Windows 7 to another partition?

If I can't do this in Windows natively does someone have a suggestion on 3rd party software?

Network Shares Not Accessible After A Period Of Time
Well this is a strange one. I was fortunate enough to get good wireless connection with the drivers that shipped with the beta and strong signal in the next room. What is strange is even though I can browse the internet fine I have lost the ability to view network shares on any of my three machines in the next room server etc. So I worked a way around it.

I would go to the bottom right task bar, right click the wireless icon and click wireless off, and then, wireless back on and I can browse my shares. Its a fault somewhere. It seems like it times out after a period of time. it is a hassle as sometimes I mirror files using a program called second copy and it will stop syncing halfway because the share disappears. Anyway just letting you developers know so it is fixed in the final hopefully.

Now I have an intel notebook with decent specs but uses the older intel 2200bg wireless card. It works flawlessly all over our house with both XP and Vista but went back to XP as vista was too slow. Anyway I had a spare 60 gig 2.5inch drive and gave windows 7 a whirl. I noticed by a search on these forums that the 2200bg drivers in win 7 dont work. I tried several drivers that I knew to work under vista as I had them saved on my hard disk and dated as I do and then downloaded vista drivers too from their web site but still no internet access wirelessly.

Lucky for me I just had to swap the drive back and the old set up was fine. I would run Win 7 on it when it comes out as it ran as well application wise as XP as far as I could tell but it has a lot of bugs and missing drivers and Dell won't be releasing any drivers for their older notebooks that's for sure.

Wonder why it took so long to decide it doesn't like my network adapter?

They worked fine on vista. I've tried Windows Update, Updating display drivers and running apps in compat modes. No luck.

Create Partitions / Extend Option Is Grayed Out
I'm trying to partition my 500 GB hard drive into 3 drives total. Right now, there is only a C Drive, but I want to divide that.

When I go into the Windows 7 installation, this is what I see:

Extend and new are grayed out, and even in disk management, there is no unallocated space.

Can somebody please guide me into partitioning this hard drive. I've searched and the only answers I find are for dual boot setups. Partition Magic is not supported by Vista (.: 7 as well).

Upgrades For Trial Version Of Windows 7
I had a friend build a new computer for me and he put the trial verison of Windows 7 on it.  I have upgraded it to the RC version of Windows 7.  Will the upgrades for Windows 7 that are currently being offered as pre-sales, do me any good since I do not have a previous version of Windows on my computer?

I do not have Vista, nor do I have XP.  The only operating system I have is the trial version of Windows 7.  Does that mean I have to buy a full copy of Windows 7 and not the Upgrades?  And if so, will there be any advance sales for the full versions with possibly discounts for uses of the trial version of Windows 7?

Upgrade From Win 7 Pro MSDN To Enterprise Trial
I am just wondering if it is possible to "upgrade" from Windows 7 Professional (RTM, MSDNAA version) to the Enterprise 90-days Trial, and this, just by entering a "trial" serial number. In fact, I am at the Microsoft's club of my university, and I am in charge of Bitlocker / Bitlocker To Go, I have to write documentation on it, as we've been testing Ultimate RC, we got this feature, but now, we have Professional RTM which lack this feature.

We managed to get very robust installations (with VPN, drivers and development tools alongside with SQL and SharePoint installation), we prefer not to reinstall/upgrade all PCs and get any risk.

Son my question is: is it possible to retrieve "trial key" from the ISO we got to do something like an "Anytime Onsite Upgrade" by just modifying the serial?

Win 7 Enterprise TRIAL, Install From USB Drive Or CDs
i all I'm downloading W7 Enterprise TRIAL (90days). I have read in FAQS:

Q: How do I create an installation DVD?

A: Insert a blank DVD into your PC’s DVD drive.  Navigate to the downloaded Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Trial file. Right-click the file and select Burn disc image , then click the Burn button when the Windows Disc Image Burner dialog appears. A bootable DVD is created. Alternatively, you can commercially-available or free DVD burning programs.

But is possible extract this ISO and "burn" in USB drive or CDS instead of DVD? And Install W7 from USB drive or CDs?

Period Keyboard Lockups / Toshiba Satellite M40 Keyboard
Toshiba PSM30 Satellite Laptop
1.25Gb Ram
Centrino 1.5Ghz

when using windows 7 on this laptop periodically the keyboard input will freeze - it will freeze for up to two seconds after which the keypresses will "catch up".

Ive hunted around for a solution to this and only managed to find a issue for some installs upgrading form winxp...

The sugestion here http://www.watchingthenet.com/windows-vista-tip-how-to-fix-slow-keyboard-response-after-upgrade-from-windows-xp.html

suggests adding a new regrsitry key which I have done and it has made ZERO difference (its not made it any worse either)

At the moment this is making this laptop pretty unusable in that it locks out keyboard input about once every 30 seconds....

Note that this lockout is not tied to any particular program (it even happens in notepad with no other programs running).

Ive preorded win7 for this laptop prior to installing the RC, and I am now starting to worry i may not be able to use it on this laptop.

if i keep the cpu gadet running "always on top" I can see that when the keyboard input is getting buffered its not the case that the CPU is maxed out at 100% in face i can see it happening when the cpu is running at less than 20 percent.

Dunno if this is a driver issue or an issue with my particular hardware setup. This is not the newest laptop but its not the oldest either, and apart from this win7 runs at an ok rate. Memory utilisation is around 45%.

Very occasionally when typing it seems that windows will issue an alert sound when the keyboard locks out but its not every time and there is no alert message associated with the sound - all in all its hugely frustrating.
