I have this problem with Windows and it's getting really annoying. At first I thought it only happened when recovering from sleep mode but I have since been proved wrong. I have gone into Power Options and set my laptop to never go into sleep, never dim the screen and never turn off the display. I then went into advanced power settings and set the hard drive to never turn off. I have since realised that Windows 7 will only freeze after a period of inactivity whether there is an open program or not.
I'm hoping someone could give me some pointers on how to go about investigating my PC switching itself off after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity (not sleeping, as Windows is configured to do after 30 mins). The PC is used as a media centre with xbmc running as the frontend. If I leave the computer unattended whilst in XBMC. the computer will switch off after approximately 10 mins. I haven't (yet) checked if it happens outside of XBMC, though I suspect it will. The eventviewer shows: The previous system shutdown at <time> on <date> was unexpected. But nothing else of significance. The reason I'm convinced this is software related is because the shutdown always occurs around about 10 mins after leaving the PC alone, with no input. I havent timed it precisely, but will do so when I next get a chance. If I am using the PC in any way, or watching a film, it does *not* shutdown. There are no errors apart from that in the eventviewer log - i.e. no boot menu when you power back on to recommend safe mode, no message on starting windows to say it shutdown unexpectedly. I havent actually observed the shutdown myself yet, so Im not sure if there is a bluescreen or not.

My PC randomly crashs without an apparent reason, one of the most annoying one happens if i leave the PC working without any input with power plan Balance, the screen is black and i can only reboot (doesn't happen with High Performance). However sometimes i also get BSOD while working normally.I'm also noticing how the frequency of the CPU gets really low sometimes if i remove the charger.
My computer screen has been going black for every 5 minutes, but I've already set all the options to never or to 0 minutes, but still the black screen just appears when I am watching video or whatever that I am doing without using the mouse.
i would leave a laptop i have over night and use it the very next morning without having to loggon to it again , interesting enough when i leave it unattended often i get the loggon screen showing at random times - knowing that i do not get logged out from account - when left unattended , here are the steps i checked to insure i am not being hacked :
1 - avg internet security business edition 2012
2 - screen saver is checked where it would not put log in screen back on resume
3 - checking that allow remote assistance and remote desktop disabled and yet i still get this random event , any thoughts to how it might be generated or what to check ?
i'm trialling out Win7 Ultimate on a machine here that i'm thinking of upgrading to win7. the only problem is, it only lasts 3 days and when i do the re-arm trick it only lengthens it by another 3 days? this is the trick i've been using and they say it lasts 120 days? [URL]
i need more than just 9 days to test out win7 fully before i make the upgrade move on this machine.
My laptop says that the windows activation period expired and asks me for a activation code. Well, i did a little research and found a way to see how many days remaining left for the activation. When i saw it in the control panel, it says that my windows is activated and even shows the activation key! My desktop is still black and it still prompts me that it is still not active.
So I am having a strange problem with a PC. The hardware seems to be working. The same problem happens on all interfaces (wired and wireless connections). I cannot get access to the network period, even though the computer has a valid IP configuration via DHCP.The strange thing is that Windows 7 says that it has internet access up until the point I try to access the network or internet with any application. IE causes a loss in connection, Firefox, Windows Updates, etc.So I have tried this so far at the command prompt to no avail.netsh int ip resetandnetsh winsock resetWhat do you all think? I am thinking that a reinstall of Windows is needed.
What is the right way to search for mpg files that saved last week I put the search in this manner. *.mpg 7/1/2011 - 7/7/2011 It said it couldn't find a file but I know I saved a couple in the past week.
I have a rig I use occasionally, as HTPC and occasional mule work, file service, etc.I would like to not have it simply sleep when I have left it running and not returned, but rather have it shutdown properly. Is there a way to do this within Windows 7 controls, or is there an aftermarket, shareware, or scripting way to do so?
So since the other day, Add And Remove programs has given me some trouble. Basically, when I went to the start Menu to work it, it didn't open up until I made a shortcut for the Desktop. And then it gave me the message that in all programs, to be blunt it couldn't find it- while I can't access it now, it said it couldn't find the program and asked me if I wanted to Admin Remove it from the list- this did nothing. And now, again, it doesn't work period. I've tried a system restore, but going back the farthest I can, it still doesn't work. Is it possible to completely reinstall Add And Remove Programs, or somehow fix it?
How do I configure Windows 7 to lock my RDP session only (but not the console session) after predefined time of inactivity (idle)? By default Windows 7 does not disconnect or lock RDP sessions.

this is the second time I've gotten this message in the last 3 days and both times my Pc was turned on and left when I was absent. Here are the details!
Wake on LAN always works. Wake on WAN works via dslreports after very short period of time after sleep. Wake on WAN DOES NOT work after long period (~5+ minutes after sleep)
It would appear I have the correct settings set given the scenario. I've done the obvious.. Set BIOS and Windows settings correctly to my knowledge. I'm lost as to why I can't get it to wake up on wan after while.
Why does my screen sometimes goes blank after a period of inactivity ( like 8 hours )? And sometimes not!. My monitor screen just turns off ( yellow light ). Then i just turn my mouse and screen goes back to normal. ITS TOTALLY RANDOM!
I disabled the screen saver and I disabled the option of the OS turning off the screen. Yet, the screen will still turn itself off after a period of inactivity. I'm currently using a Asus Monitor 19'

I purchased my Windows 7 Pro and installed it, thinking that I would activate it later, then didn't use the computer for some time. Now, when I attempt to activate, I'm told that my key has been blocked. The only solution I'm being offered is to purchase another key.
It seems i have narrowed down my issue that I have been dealing with for it seems like months now. Well essentially my system will reboot anytime it sits for an extended period of time (about 15 to 20 Minutes). My computer will go into standby mode. I do have it set for my computer to never sleep but only my screens. I have followed the BSOD instructions and do and those to attach to this post. Here is the additional information regarding this problem... Is Windows 7 . . . - x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? - x64 - the original installed OS on the system? Yes - an OEM or full retail version?Full retail version - What is the age of system (hardware)? Eh, varies video cards about a year old, memory and hardrives are about the same length of time. Chip is fairly new within a few months. - What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) OS was freshly reinstalled on 11/17/2011. All drivers for all pieces of hardware in my machine have had the newest drivers updated, including my video cards. I have also done the BIOS update for both of my video cards available from Palit. Oddly enough i can play Starcraft II for hours and no issue with rebooting... only when it sits for an extended period of time as mentioned earlier.
I use Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. Firefox is filled with privacy tools including Privoxy, Ghostery and Disconnect. My other browsers do no have anything. I use Windows firewall, Avast Free and Full version of Malwarebytes with malicious web-site blocking turned off. I also use Spyware Blaster. I use Windows 7. I am behind Cisco router.
Problem: When I use facebook.com either https or http, after a certain period of times or page visits, the facebook stops loading and "hangs" on a page not going back or forward. I either have to wait, or close it and open another browser. This has been going on for quite some time. I tried clearing everything with CCleaner, flushed DNS, Etc. When I ping, I get all 4 responses.
My computer gets at least ONCE BSOD every time I turn it on after a long period of shutdown. It also sometimes randomly just shuts off or give me additional BSODs. It has got to the point that I can't even load to windows recently, which lead me to reformat my computer. I know the drivers here are not the latest ones, I am trying to use only the drivers from the CDs that came with the hardwares because the last time I used all the latest ones it still caused BSODs. I am not sure what other information I need to post up.

i came across this a little while ago:[URL] it says if i run that command Windows7 evaluation period will be extended by 30 days each time it's done. however, when i do it it only extends for 3 days. is there any way to make it last longer or has it changed?
i have random freezes sometimes they are glitchy and rarely bsod all on bootup or up to about half hour in (which also turns of the mouse). also Internet doesn't autoplay playlists and all sugestions next to the video are black. this started a few weeks to a month ago, first it seemed just a minor annoyance but it started to become more often the last few days. i've tried some checks but without success. also i remember the week before those crashes that twice the screen driver crashed for a second or 2 and then a message popped up about how a monitor driver crash was adjusted, always when i played a certain game that is still in beta so i taught it was the game.
My audio was working well, but i decided to start recording find a way to improve my outbound audio quality (i'm an audiophile). I purchased a Fast Track Pro. Unlike other threads I've read, I'm not seeing any BSOD and its not crackling. My operating system will just stop functioning, or freeze for a half a second at a time. This can become frequent at about 10 times in a thirty second period requiring a restart. I had installed the latest x64 driver for my W7 x64 system from M-audio's website.
I uninstalled the driver and restarted, the issue persisted. I then installed the on-board audio driver and restarted, no system lag is present. The audio device-driver is acting up and I'm not sure why. Because i bought it used M-audio's support is a no-go. Are there any additional steps I can take which may troubleshoot this issue?
Whenever I try to log into Windows once I type the password and click it just remains at the Welcome freeze and never logs in. I am currently in Safe Mode and it seems like everything works fine .If I log out and try again to log in Windows I either get stuck in the welcome screen . I have left this over a hour and yet no luck.I have to manually shut down the computer. 2 days ago I had my iPad(first gen) plugged in to synch with iTunes. This is what I have been doing for a long time however yesterday despite me not pluggin out the ipad I got some kind of USB error and then an iTunes error. I unplugged my iPad and tried pluggin it again however both the iPad and iTunes did not recognize it. I continued to use my computer and it seemed to work fine till I shut it down last night. Now I am unable to log back in.[CODE]
hey guy so i just built a new computer last week! brand new everything. The problem that i am getting is when i go to install windows 7 64 bit its gets through the windows loading files fine, but then goes to the next screen that says "starting windows" and it freezes then! it doesnt bring up the colorful balls or anything it just freezes. I have not been able to figure it out and still have no idea if it is a hardware defect or whatMy computer specs are:MSI 870A-G54 motherboardAMD phenom 2 x4 955 black edition quad core600 watt psu DDR3 PC3-10666 PNY 4gb Ram (two 2 gb sticks) @ 1333mhz750 GB Seagate Barracude 7200 rpm Serial ATA Hard DriveEvga GeForce GTS 450 Video cardAsus Sata dvd driveUpdates:- updated my bios and have one ram in there..have used both rams individually..except now it goes a little farther.. ic the colored balloons! but still not working.....- Hooked my new hard drive up to my old computer and ran windows 7 with that attempting to see how far i can go on that computer with it, and i get past the starting windows
so i just installed a LEGAL version of windows 7 HP x64 oem (i did have ultimate illegal for a few months) it was working fine for a week or so and then occasionally it would freeze 'desktop first and then a few seconds later the mouse would stop moving'.i can into safe mode without a problem that's how im posting this.when i had ultimate it worked fine and didn't freeze but i have upgraded the cpu and mobo.OLD asrock n68c ucc with phenom x3 720 be @2.8ghzNEWgigabyte ma-ga790xt ud4p with phenom x4 955 be @ 3.2ghzthe asrock only used a 4 pin cpu lead but the 790xt uses a 8pin cpu lead so i made a 4pin and 1molex to 8pin, i even had this when i had ultimate and didn't have a problem.a few things it could be ram or psui have 4gb ddr3 1333hz ram and 2gb ddr3 1060hz ram and i dono if that would be an issue as it hasn't before and the other could be a cheap psu alpine 550W and i have a 2 fans on a speed controller using 1 molex a temp gauge using another molex a another molex for a hdd (not an ssd) and 1 more for the CD-Rom DVD-Rom drive, im thinking its not psu issue because if it was it would freeze in safe mode and i have disabled all the start-up programs and still froze.
I have a problem when I leave my computer running to download a game, game update or just leave it running over night, I find out it has locked up! The mouse moves sometimes, but when I go to click something, it tells me Windows Explorer has Stopped Responding and no matter how long I leave it to that, it never recovers or the mouse is just locked up completely and I have no use of the computer. Also, the whole time this is happening, the hard drive is doing NOTHING. I have never had problems with this drive on normal use so I somewhat doubt it is failing, no odd sounds, no SMART warnings, nothing to say the drive is going down hill. I did try doing a system restore, but that didn't help at all, and that is about the best I can do, I am great with hardware, but not so much software.[CODE]
I re-installed windows three days ago. Since then, it has completely frozen (requiring a hard reset) 4 times, twice in a row today, and twice in a row the day before yesterday.
My specs are as follows:
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T M4A89GTD-PRO 6GB A-Data DDR3 RAM ASUS EAH5770 CUcore Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I never had freezing issues before my new installation.
