Shutdown After Idle Time Period?

Dec 28, 2011

I have a rig I use occasionally, as HTPC and occasional mule work, file service, etc.I would like to not have it simply sleep when I have left it running and not returned, but rather have it shutdown properly. Is there a way to do this within Windows 7 controls, or is there an aftermarket, shareware, or scripting way to do so?

Unexpected Shutdown After Period Of Inactivity

Aug 22, 2011

I'm hoping someone could give me some pointers on how to go about investigating my PC switching itself off after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity (not sleeping, as Windows is configured to do after 30 mins). The PC is used as a media centre with xbmc running as the frontend. If I leave the computer unattended whilst in XBMC. the computer will switch off after approximately 10 mins. I haven't (yet) checked if it happens outside of XBMC, though I suspect it will. The eventviewer shows: The previous system shutdown at <time> on <date> was unexpected. But nothing else of significance. The reason I'm convinced this is software related is because the shutdown always occurs around about 10 mins after leaving the PC alone, with no input. I havent timed it precisely, but will do so when I next get a chance. If I am using the PC in any way, or watching a film, it does *not* shutdown. There are no errors apart from that in the eventviewer log - i.e. no boot menu when you power back on to recommend safe mode, no message on starting windows to say it shutdown unexpectedly. I havent actually observed the shutdown myself yet, so Im not sure if there is a bluescreen or not.

BSOD After Long Period Of Shutdown On Startup, Random Power Shut Off

Dec 12, 2011

My computer gets at least ONCE BSOD every time I turn it on after a long period of shutdown. It also sometimes randomly just shuts off or give me additional BSODs. It has got to the point that I can't even load to windows recently, which lead me to reformat my computer. I know the drivers here are not the latest ones, I am trying to use only the drivers from the CDs that came with the hardwares because the last time I used all the latest ones it still caused BSODs. I am not sure what other information I need to post up.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 - fresh reformat
ASUS M4A77TD Pro
AMD Athlon II X4 635 2.9Ghz Socket AM3 95W
Crucial 4GB DDR3-1333 (PC 10600) MT16JTF51264AZ-1G4H1 (It's a 2x 4GB set, but I'm just using once at the moment to filter out problems)

BSOD After Computer Sleeps For A Short Period Of Time, 0x00000116

Nov 22, 2011

It seems i have narrowed down my issue that I have been dealing with for it seems like months now. Well essentially my system will reboot anytime it sits for an extended period of time (about 15 to 20 Minutes). My computer will go into standby mode. I do have it set for my computer to never sleep but only my screens. I have followed the BSOD instructions and do and those to attach to this post. Here is the additional information regarding this problem... Is Windows 7 . . . - x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? - x64 - the original installed OS on the system? Yes - an OEM or full retail version?Full retail version - What is the age of system (hardware)? Eh, varies video cards about a year old, memory and hardrives are about the same length of time. Chip is fairly new within a few months. - What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) OS was freshly reinstalled on 11/17/2011. All drivers for all pieces of hardware in my machine have had the newest drivers updated, including my video cards. I have also done the BIOS update for both of my video cards available from Palit. Oddly enough i can play Starcraft II for hours and no issue with rebooting... only when it sits for an extended period of time as mentioned earlier.

Facebook Doesn't Work - Stop Loading And Hangs After Certain Period Of Time

Jul 12, 2012

I use Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. Firefox is filled with privacy tools including Privoxy, Ghostery and Disconnect. My other browsers do no have anything. I use Windows firewall, Avast Free and Full version of Malwarebytes with malicious web-site blocking turned off. I also use Spyware Blaster. I use Windows 7. I am behind Cisco router.

Problem: When I use facebook.com either https or http, after a certain period of times or page visits, the facebook stops loading and "hangs" on a page not going back or forward. I either have to wait, or close it and open another browser. This has been going on for quite some time. I tried clearing everything with CCleaner, flushed DNS, Etc. Restarts When Using PC After Long Idle Time

Apr 15, 2011

I've had this issue for about three weeks now and I really don't know what could it be causing it. Almost every day after getting back to my PC after school/in the morning, when I use it, it would restart within the next 5 minutes, sometimes twice in a row in a 5 minute interval. And then not anymore. At first I thought my computer was overheating, so I downloaded Core Temp and it says my cores are most of the time in the 40-50 degrees range. Now I realize this might be on the higher side (is it?).

Limit Idle Time Of Switched Users?

Nov 8, 2012

how to log out users that are idle on Windows 7? I work for a company that has computers in general areas, anyone can walk up and login and use it for business. Many of my users don't log off and later when they change their password these machines lock out their AD accounts. I was thinking that we could use the group policies that are used for terminal services to log out after being idle for x amount of time.

PC Responds To Nothing For Unspecified Amount Of Time When Left Idle

Jan 30, 2013

I am having an annoying problem on my notebook. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64. My specs are;

Sony Vaio E series notebook
M460 CPU
8 Gb Ram
120 Gb Sandisk SSD
ATI HD 5650
An external 5.1 Creative sound card (USB)
And a 2TB 3.5" hard drive constantly hooked up.

My problem is, I leave the computer on its own for some time, while browser, music/video player, e-mail client vs. normal applications are running, because I need to go outside or due to any reason. When I get back after some time, I press a button to active the screen (I do not use any sleep or hibernation mode, or HDD switch off timeout. My PC constantly works), I get the screen but after a few seconds my pc freezes. The mouse also. It responds to nothing for an unspecified amount of time. I press buttons, move the cursor, try to click things but the screen just freezes. After some time (which varies in every freeze like this) my notebook starts to respond and act normal.

Interesting thing is, during a freeze I press the Windows button, and when the freeze is over, the notebook jumps up the start menu. It's like it freezes but also records the given commands during freeze. I tried setting an animated screensaver, but no difference. I return to the notebook, I press a key and it freezes again. The freezes go on or varied times, from 30 seconds to several minutes. Another interesting thing is when I leave a torrent program on, I don't encounter such freeze. It also happened right after a clean Windows restore.

I did some research online and tried many things to fix the issue, none of them were successful. So, he has just been putting up with the clock always being wrong. Then the other day when he turned it on, it wouldn't even boot Windows, and just says "time of day clock stopped".

Windows Does Not Reboot After Each Time Shutdown

Nov 7, 2012

It makes several months am using Windows 7 Professional on my Dell Studio XPS 1640 (it's a 64bit system). It was working fine and I was happy with it. It makes some weeks now that after each time I shut down, when I turn on again, it boots up to where the 4 coloured logo appears and then am left with a dark screen with only the cursor. I once waited for nearly 1 hour, nothing changed. The users screen never appeared.

I had to turn off manually, and when I turn it on again, it tell me that windows failed to restart.... and am left with these 2 options: >start Windows Normally(I went back to square 1 when I tried this) >Startup Repair.

The automatic system repair did not find any problem, I had to use the system recovery for which I had to choose a previous date in time to which I want the computer to reboot. Some times it works, sometimes I have to do it again and change the date.

When I hibernate the laptop, there is no problem when I turn it on again. But when I shut down or restart the laptop, it boots up to the "starting windows" screen with the windows logo and I have to turn it off manually.

It is causing me a lot of problem, I cannot install any program, each time I have to reinstall my printer.

Shutdown Time With External HD In Sleep Mode

Jun 16, 2011

At the moment I'm not really using an external HD for any purpose, but still have it plugged in, with the software set to put it into sleep mode after 3 minutes if it's not being used. It's actually noisier than my PC so it's something I would rather not have humming away if possible. I have noticed that when I shut down when the HD is not in sleep mode, it shuts down pretty much instantaneously. With the HD in sleep mode, we're talking about a minute. What could be the cause of this? The PC is trying to shut down, and can't see the HD because it's having a nap? Would be nice to know.

BSOD On Boot Every-time After Shutdown, Error 0x00000024

Mar 25, 2012

I've had this problem for a while and it drives me nuts. Every time I shut down my computer it will crash the next time I power up and try to boot windows 7. I can go in and out of sleep or hibernate without issue but if I ever shut down my system it will BSOD during the next power on. After this initial BSOD there are usually a series of BSOD (usually they report different error codes) in subsequent restarts. Eventually the system does seem to stabilize and stop crashing. Once things are working it will run for literally months without another BSOD.

Add And Remove Programs Doesn't Work Period

And then it gave me the message that in all programs, to be blunt it couldn't find it- while I can't access it now, it said it couldn't find the program and asked me if I wanted to Admin Remove it from the list- this did nothing. And now, again, it doesn't work period. I've tried a system restore, but going back the farthest I can, it still doesn't work. Is it possible to completely reinstall Add And Remove Programs, or somehow fix it?
