Sleep Mode Activated When PC Not Idle?
Nov 28, 2012OK, I've read all about Windows 7 sleep mode and (think) I understand everything I've read. What I have not seen in my research and do not understand is why my PC enters sleep mode when it is not idle!
For example, I start a disk backup to an external drive, close the lid on my laptop (yes, I have set the sleep setting "do nothing" when the lid is closed), and then leave the computer to "do it's thing". The backup normally takes at least 15 minutes to run. However, my Windows 7 enters sleep mode within minutes while the backup job is running. Why?
This same problem occurs no matter what program I'm running - backup, video conversion, defrag, etc etc. It seems that if I'm not using the mouse or keyboard, sleep mode is activated no matter what is currently running on my PC.
Yes, I want to utilize the Windows 7 sleep mode feature. No, I don't want sleep mode activated while my computer is busy running a job!
Computer Freezes After Being Idle Or Sleep Mode
Jan 21, 2012About 2 months ago I started getting random freezes and would have to do a hard restart on my computer to restart. To see if it was a virus or any kind of malware, I did a clean reformat of my hard drive and was still having issues. Eventually it started taking forever to boot up and load files and I got a SMART status bad message. So I wound up replacing my hard drive with a brand new one and did a clean install of Windows 7. That seemed to fix the slow boot and file load times but now I'm still getting freezes. However they are not random. They seem to happen when I don't touch the computer for awhile, whether I have a program such as something downloading in the background or not. They also seem to happen when I close the computer and put it to sleep and leave it like that for awhile. I try to wake it up and I only get a black screen, however my computer is on as I can hear the components.
The strange thing is as long as I am actively using the computer it doesn't seem to do this. I was on it for about 6 hours yesterday night and nothing happened and the computer was working fine. I did various hard disk scans even though I know it can't be the hard drive seeing as I just replaced it. It also isn't my graphics card as I uninstalled the driver and let my computer run for awhile with the standard VGA adapter and it still froze after me not touching it for awhile. I also did a windows memory diagnostic scan and nothing came up. I'm thinking there are 2 seperate problems with my computer, one that I fixed by replacing the hard drive (the slow boot time and file loading times, it took me 20 minutes to open up windows explorer, it doesn't anymore.) and another that I am unsure of. Should I do more memtest passes? I heard that one is not enough and that you should do up to 7 to make sure your RAM isn't faulty.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Processor: Intel Core i5 2.27 GHZ
RAM: 4GB DDR3
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GT 330M (1GB Video Memory)
Hard Drive: 500 GB Hybrid SATA/Solid State (4GB of solid state memory), this is the new hard drive that I purchased.
I tried downloading updates for a game and it immediately froze. So maybe the freezing is still happening on a random basis...
BSOD After Waking Up From Sleep Mode, Freezing When Idle
Mar 12, 2012my computer has all of a sudden started to give me a BSOD about a minute after I wake the computer up from Sleep Mode. Also, if I leave the computer for more than 15 minutes I come back and the computer has frozen so I have to manually restart it. Every once in a while I've gotten the BSOD while I'm in the middle of doing something and it's been hours since it was in sleep mode.
So far I've tried to Restore my computer back to before the trouble started, and I've also fully uninstalled my video drivers (ATI Radeon HD 5470), and then installed the newest version from ATI's website.
My computer is Windows 7 64-bit, OEM version from Acer.
Shutdown Time With External HD In Sleep Mode
Jun 16, 2011At the moment I'm not really using an external HD for any purpose, but still have it plugged in, with the software set to put it into sleep mode after 3 minutes if it's not being used. It's actually noisier than my PC so it's something I would rather not have humming away if possible. I have noticed that when I shut down when the HD is not in sleep mode, it shuts down pretty much instantaneously. With the HD in sleep mode, we're talking about a minute. What could be the cause of this? The PC is trying to shut down, and can't see the HD because it's having a nap? Would be nice to know.

Limit Idle Time Of Switched Users?
Nov 8, 2012how to log out users that are idle on Windows 7? I work for a company that has computers in general areas, anyone can walk up and login and use it for business. Many of my users don't log off and later when they change their password these machines lock out their AD accounts. I was thinking that we could use the group policies that are used for terminal services to log out after being idle for x amount of time.

Jan 30, 2013I am having an annoying problem on my notebook. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64. My specs are;
Sony Vaio E series notebook
M460 CPU
8 Gb Ram
120 Gb Sandisk SSD
ATI HD 5650
An external 5.1 Creative sound card (USB)
And a 2TB 3.5" hard drive constantly hooked up.
My problem is, I leave the computer on its own for some time, while browser, music/video player, e-mail client vs. normal applications are running, because I need to go outside or due to any reason. When I get back after some time, I press a button to active the screen (I do not use any sleep or hibernation mode, or HDD switch off timeout. My PC constantly works), I get the screen but after a few seconds my pc freezes. The mouse also. It responds to nothing for an unspecified amount of time. I press buttons, move the cursor, try to click things but the screen just freezes. After some time (which varies in every freeze like this) my notebook starts to respond and act normal.
Interesting thing is, during a freeze I press the Windows button, and when the freeze is over, the notebook jumps up the start menu. It's like it freezes but also records the given commands during freeze. I tried setting an animated screensaver, but no difference. I return to the notebook, I press a key and it freezes again. The freezes go on or varied times, from 30 seconds to several minutes. Another interesting thing is when I leave a torrent program on, I don't encounter such freeze. It also happened right after a clean Windows restore.

Jul 20, 2012Windows 7, 64 bit. It's the original OS. I'm not sure what the difference between OEM and full retail is but I got this the way it was in the shop. I haven't added anything. The age is roughly a year old and I haven't reinstalled the OS.I got the BSOD twice a month or two apart about 2-3 months ago. However, it happened once yesterday, and twice today. The second time I got the error 0x8000ffff but I was able to do a system restore. I usually keep my laptop on for days... I used to do that with my previous laptop and I never had any problems so I don't know if that's what's causing the BSOD.

Aug 16, 2012This has been an ongoing issue with my computer only waking from sleep half the time. The other half I need to actually power cycle my machine in order for it to wake. I know when it is going to wake properly because I hear the DAC on my Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound Card click on and if it's not going to work obviously I don't hear the click.I have tried the following:
- Complete system rebuild with new hard drives, reinstall of windows
- All drivers updated and bios updated (I have been through a fair few driver updates because this has been an issue for over a year)
- New Memory installed
- Played with as many power settings in the bios as possible
I am really starting to think it is a hardware issue with either my motherboard or video card but don't have a spare of each of these and don't want to buy new stuff just to test it.
Here are my Specs:
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V Pro
CPU: Intel i7 2600
Video Card: Gigabyte 6950 (in eyefinity with 3 Monitors)
Sound Card: Asus Xonar Essence STX
HDD: 2 x 240GB Sandisk Extreme SSD (Raid0)
Memory: Kingston Hyper X 4x4GB (16GB Total)
PSU: Seasonic X Series 750w
Monitors: Samsung MD230x3 (3x23") 2 connected via DVI and 1 via DisplayPort
As mentioned the hard drives and memory were replaced so it can't be either of those. Also it can't be any settings because it does wake via my keyboard/mouse half the time. It is also hard to troubleshoot as it may work 3 times ok and even wake form sleep overnight but then I could leave it for 30 mins come back and it won't wake that time, there is no pattern that I can make out, not sure what else I can do to troubleshoot this but it is really annoying as my computer gets a lot of use and would rather put it to sleep than continually turn it off and on.

I usually let the laptop go to sleep and when i wake the computer, the wireless connection takes about 2 or 3 minutes to reconnect to the network.
I have another win 7 laptop that connects as soon as it wakes up but this one does not do that. The wireless connects fine when i boot the computer but its just after Sleep and wake.
The wireless symbol right bottom of the screen tells me that there are wireless networks in the vicinity but takes some time to connect; I have set my network to connect automatically if it detects it.

Bug In Sleep Mode?
May 24, 2012I bought a new notebook running windows 7 64 bit a couple of months ago After running a full system scan with Kaspersky anti-virus a couple of days ago I now have a bug with sleep mode - After going into sleep mode, the user with my picture icon is locked meaning that I can't enter my password to log back in - the password box doesn't show.With the ASUS face recognition scanner I'm logged back in, but everything is 'buggy' e.g. if I click on the start button and hover over that entire area it goes into sleep again, or if i click on the bookmarks on chrome it doesn't show them, instead it click on an actual site within the bookmarks.After going into sleep the only way to enter and return to a normal state is to click the 'switch user' whereupon, my user picture icon reverts with the password boxI have tried a system restore but this didn't work.

I had microsoft security essential installed and read on some forums that it could be the reason for this problem: I unistalled that. Then I run online scanned from ESET nd Bitdefender: all clean.
Then I installed avas free edition (as I was without any anti-virus software). Did a complete system scan with no problem. I messed up with the power consumpion settings with no results.
The only solution I could find was to use the software "Dontsleep.exe" which I found googling around: it works ! I looked up all the running services and application at windows sturtup and disabled a lot of them with no results.
