Strange Behaviour For Folders Of Jpegs?

Sep 22, 2011

I notice since upgrading to Windows 7, Explorer shows some quirky behaviour compared with the XP version. My current irritation is when I open a folder containing (say) 500 jpegs that were in filename (ascending) sequence, the folder opens quite quickly and I can see the file icons, but I get a message 'Searching for items...' and a progress bar at the top of the window which takes up to a minute to complete. The end result is always the same... the files are now sorted into descending sequence. It seems to be the case only for jpegs, only when sorted on filename, and only when 'Large Icons' were selected. Even then it only seems to display this behaviour when the folders contain a lot of files (maybe more than 200 jpegs). And it doesn't seem to matter whether or not the folder has recently been opened.I note that if I click on the 'X' next to the progress bar, to stop 'Loading', there isn't a problem. The thumbnails have already been drawn, so what's going on during this process? And why the inversion?

Pinning Network Files (Strange Behaviour)

May 27, 2009

Okay, so I was having some issues before with pinning network files to the explorer item on the taskbar.

I can now replicate the bug happening. I want to see if it's just my setup or windows 7, so I'd be much obliged if someone can test this out for me as well.

First Scenario

1) First map a network drive.

2) Pin it to the explorer item on the taskbar by dragging it there.

3) Open up the destiation through the jump list.

4) navigate a couple of folders down and open any file.

What you should get is the network drive is no longer pinned. However, the folder where the file you just opened resided has taken it's place.

Second Scenario

1) Navigate to a network destination through windows explorer (not a mapped drive)

2) Pin a Folder from that network destination by gragging to the taskbar.

3) Pin another folder than resides inside a folder in step 2

Result: Folder pinned in step 2 is replaced by folder pinned in step 3

Strange Multiple File Selection Behaviour

Apr 3, 2011

All of a sudden after turning on my Windows 7 based notebook this morning, when I select a folder or file with the left mouse button in Windows Explorer, all folders and files from the first to the one being pointed at will be selected. The files & directories stay selected. Double clicking will attempt to open the lot. Very annoying behaviour. Right click on the desired item gets me out of trouble. ANy selected files are deselected and I can then use right click option menu's Open item.

"all Programs" Search In Start Menu: Strange Behaviour

Mar 16, 2009

With Vista I became a big fan of the search capacity into the "start menu - all programs" when I need to launch a software.

But in Seven (currently using 7000 x64) I'm a little bit disappointed about some strange thing in there.

I've got 2 softwares that I use often:

- Mediacoder (for encoding video files)

- M.Play Home center (for my IR module and remote control)

For the first of this two I start to type: M E D I A ... But as long as I do not type MEDIAC (and more) the only choice Seven propose to me is Mediaplayer and MediaCenter.

For M.Play I need to type M.Play H without what it still propose to me MediaCenter and Mediaplayer.. and only this 2 !!

I really do not understand why typing M.P give me the only choise of WMP and WMC ! It should display M.Play Home Center. As it should display Mediacoder when I start to type Media.

And Under Vista it give to you the most used answer. If you have multiple possibility, the first on the list will be the one you often chose.

In Seven, the choise is WMP and WMC.. until you type enough letter which became quickly annoying. This thing is supposed to make faster the way of launching apps... but not in Seven

Does your Seven work like that ?

Weird USB Behaviour

Nov 11, 2009

i am running windows 7 ultimate N and well i have a U3 Titanium drive made by san disk. all other usb pen drives work perfectly except for mine, the one with all my work on it. i hav tried uninstalling it but when it tells me it is installed. i am not sure if this is a diver problem or something. i have tried searching google. but i really need a quick solution to this because i hav a major assessment due next week and its on the pen drive.

it is not U3 because i tested my sister's u3 and it works fine, it is not the pen drive because it works on XP and Mac OSX. it is not that my computer cant mount pen drives, because everyone else's works... and i hav attempted al ports, using hubs, KVM's nothing seems to work o.o

the cd drive that is mounted for u3 to start up will mount but the usb wont, cannot access through computer manage> disk management.

Lost Files/Missing JPEGs?

Jan 29, 2011

I cant be positive that this is solely a Windows 7 issue, considering that files can get lost all the time on any system but, just recently, a good majority of my jpeg picture files have randomly disappeared. There are a few folders that are still in the usual place (Pictures Folder). As for the missing folders, they would appear after I use the computer search, however, when I try to open them, I get a pop-up that states that the shortcut has been modified/moved and my only option is whether or not I want to delete it. I looked under Recent Docs and the missing files show up; the latest one thats been modified was earlier this month when it was still accessible. I've even tried a system restore (from before the modification dates) and the Unerasure program, which I found out the hard way is a total sham. Is there any way to recover these? I really don't want to lose a chunk of nostalgia

JPEGs Disappearing When Saved Using Snipping Tool

Jun 7, 2011

I recently installed Windows 7 on my laptop and have noticed a peculiar issue...when I save a jpeg to a folder or the desktop and then go to change the date, after I hit enter to confirm the change the image disappears from view. The same thing happens when I try and save a jpeg using the Snipping Tool, as well - the image is just gone! However, if I try to download a new image without changing the date and name it the same as the image that vanished, it won't let me do it because the name is already in use. So it appears that the image is still within the folder, but I can't get access to it.

Odd Behaviour After Recover From Screen Power Off

Sep 11, 2009

I have been having an issue that is occurring at random where after the laptop has been woken up from having powered the screen off, everything else still running, that it starts randomly opening and selecting loads of different windows and options.

Its almost like its racing through and redoing actions almost as if in a recorded session playing back at high speed, however many of the optins its selecting are options I never went into in any session since last full reboot.

Typically this happens for anywhere between 5 and 20 seconds then the system stabalises and runs fine. However I am concerned that during that time options and setttings may be changed without me seeing them occurring which will cause oother problems later.

I am running 7600 RTM, I have done several full virus scans (as well as daily automatic scans) all of which have been clean.

Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?

I eventually did get it to boot but it wouldn't fully load. I decided to try removing RAM. I have 4gb in two slots. After removing one of them Windows booted fine. To check the RAM I took the second one out and replaced the first one, again Windows booted OK. I tried them both together again and I was back to Windows not loading.

Strange Behavior After Updates?

Jul 10, 2012

Most of today, my laptop was acting fine. But after I installed the updates, something odd happened. I rebooted it to finish the updates as is expected, and when it rebooted, I got a sort of blank screen with a toolbar but with an error message that said it couldn't connect to my Windows or something like that. The error said something about Win32 being moved possibly or something. Sorry that I can't recall all of it. I rebooted again and since that time, it's been fine, although that first reboot after the error did give me a "PERSONAL SETTINGS (NOT RESPONDING) square.Any idea what could cause something like that just once?Everything seems fine now. I'm running a Dell Inspiron laptop that's about 15mo old, Windows 7, all the latest service packs. I just went over a thorough virus scan with someone in the virus area about a week ago and all was clear, will run scans again soon, should I post there again?

Strange Folder Created Itself

Jul 31, 2010

Something has generated a folder C:24982372e61d90cbb1511cba10 on my HDD. It's dated 26-Jun-2010 and contains 27 folders and 115 files. Most of the folders have four digit names and contain three files each, to a total of 195 MB. All the folders have the same time-stamp, as do their contents. The storage is no problem but I hate having things around I know nothing about. "Who ordered that?" applies. I don't remember a crash but it's possible. I'm guessing that it would be safe to shift the lot to the recycle bin.

Strange Folder Renaming?

Mar 28, 2011

Just bought a new PC. Runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit. I'm new to Windows 7 but have used previous Windows versions for years and years (but not Vista). And I've never seen this happen with any other operating system. Out of the box, Windows 7 sets up this "My Documents" & "Public Documents" system of folders (and the same for pictures, music and videos). And that's great for separating each user's documents and providing common folders which all users can see. But, shortly after setting my new PC up (installed a printer & some other hardware bits, installed Office & copied my document files across from the old PC), Windows suddenly renamed the "My" & "Public" versions of the documents, music & videos folders. Looking at it all via my own account (I'm admin, by the way), I had folders called "Documents" & "Documents" instead of "My Documents" and "Public Documents" (and the same for music & videos). But it kindly left me with "My Pictures" and "Public Pictures" folders. This has actually happened on two machines now. It happened on the original new PC. But the store exchanged it with an identical new machine

Really Strange MBR/BCD/NTOSKRNL Error

Nov 4, 2009

I seem to have a unique fault on my Windows 7 install.

Upgrading from XP

Spec: AMD Dual-core 3gig, 4 gb RAM, WD 500GB primary HDD, ATI gfx

So - downloaded and installed Windows 7 from a memory stick.

Installed apparently ok.

Re-booted - came up with the "popular" NTOSKRNL.exe missing/corrupt error.

Re-copied various files; hal.dll, ntoskrnl.exe etc as directed on various sites - no joy.

Thinking it could be a MBR fault and not being familiar with Vista/Windows 7 I stuck in my old XP install CD to use Fdisk.

With the XP install CD in the drive, Windows 7 boots perfectly! (Doesn't even attempt to load XP install/repair)

Take out CD - NTOSKRNL error.

Once in Windows 7 - everything works fine.

Looking at various other options, came acorss a couple of tips about BCD and bootrec such as:
How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows

Error message when you start Windows Vista: "The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information"

Bootrec used to say the only OS was C:Windows.old.00

Ran fixes as above - now says there are no OS installed.

Windows 7 repair console only finds Windows 7 OS

Am starting to go insane.

To summarise:

Recieve NTOSKRNL.exe error when booting up PC

Boots Windows 7 fine with WinXP install disk in drive

Bootrec finds no OS

Windows 7 repair finds Windows 7

Strange Windows 7 Dual Boot?

When I am in XP I can see all the hard drives like normal. When I am in Windows 7 I cannot see the C drive with XP. Windows Explorer only gives several folders on C, none of them Windows. Is this normal and do others have the same thing? Or is something amiss with my computer. Also, can I install programs to the same place for both systems? I tried a couple small ones and they seem to act all right. I am installing my programs to the second partition of my second hard drive. (Windows 7 is on the first partition). Is this ok to do or will I run into problems.
