[FAQ] Windows Disk Defragmenter Versus The Other Same Programs?
Aug 19, 2012
tell me if Windows Disk Defragmenter is a good defragmenting program?I mean for example if Defraggler, Auslogics Disk Defrag or DiskRescue 2009 are better than Windows Disk Defragmenter? Some of the 3 other programs have different features such as moving the most accessed files to the fastest part of the disk, or even defragmenting the free space remained on the disk.Windows Disk Defragmenter does the same things as the other programs?I want you to be honest and make a correct recommendation, without being influenced by the idea that Windows Disk Defragmenter is a Windows product and here we are on a Windows forum.

I was just wondering if anyone might happen to know as to why Drive C: which is my primary operating system drive that I have Windows 7 installed on is not showing up in the list of drives that can be defragmented and as to what I might be able to do about it.I'm hearing the drive access things a lot and when I've run Checkdisk and had the computer restart it's indicated that there have been orphaned files. I've uninstalled and wiped the system several times but to no effect and at the moment I just don't know as to what could be causing it and what I can do to fix it.

When I open disk defragmenter it doesn't list my C drive -- which is the primary internal HD on which the OS, windows 7 64 bit, is installed. I have another partition that came with my computer (Dell Studio XPS) on which Dell has some a backup recovery image on, and this drive 'Recovery (D' _does_ show up. Just the 'OS (C' drive does not -- which happens to be the drive I'd like to defrag.I haven't tried any other defrag programs yet. I'm the administrator user on this computer if that's relevent. Also, if I go to properties on my C drive via my computer and click defrag from there, it'll open disk defragmenter and still just list the D drive.

I was going to get around to defragging my C: drive today, (which I don't actually remember if I've ever done in Windows 7) and when I opened the Disk Defragmenter, the C: drive doesn't show up, and as a result I can't defrag it. I have an HP Probook 4510s.

Running Windows 7 Profesional SP1 64bit, I have an SSD system drive at C: and a hard drive installed as D:. No firewall or a/v software running on the system. Logged in as an admin.
When I click the shortcut at Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter, nothing happens. Same thing if I click 'Defragment now...' from D: drive properties > Tools.
Shouldn't I see some type of user dialog box? The program linked to is called dfrgui.exe, so I expect there should be some kind of GUI.

Prior to uninstalling several programs, the unused space on my C DRIVE (3 25 GB SSDs in RAID O), was 12.8 GB. After uninstalling around 1.5 GB, the unused space was REDUCED to 11.9 GB.

When I started my computer today windows was unable to full start. It got the the colorful welcome screen, and froze. I restarted and it went to chkdsk. So i ran chkdsk because it was highly recommended when I started my computer today. After a good 30 minutes it finally ended and told me a few files were unreadable and a few were deleted, scanned, etc. here is an image to help show what I mean:Afterwards, when I attempted to run Google Chrome, and a few other programs, I obtained an error message at the bottom of the screen, and when i clicked on the balloon, to hopefully get a reason or options on how to fix it, I got nothing and it popped up again, and again, and again. It is not stopping anything, it is not ending a program or closing any; it is just annoying and a little uneasing on my part of keeping this computer running. Here is an image to help express exactly what I see: how I could just turn the alert balloon off, but I would like a complete fix, not just 'duct tape'.Also, I have been getting this whenever i try to 1 uninstall a program and when I try to save an image/file:

I have found tutorials (here and elsewhere) for custom Windows (7/XP/Vista...) install disks, should you wish to tailor your Windows install to your needs. However, I have not found anything relating to my current question. While I will create one of these Windows disks, what I am wondering right now is: Is it possible to do the same thing with multiple programs from different vendors?I would like to eventually create a Windows install disk that has been trimmed of all the excesses I do not need, adding drivers, SP1 and some critical updates instead. If there is enough room on the install disk, I would like to add some third-party programs to be installed as well. It may turn out that I would need a Windows disk and an applications/programs disk also (as the programs themselves would be rather numerous and/or bulky).I know it is possible, since the big OEMs do this, but would it be cost-efficient (read: free), or even possible, for an end user to do

I was using a program called NoLimits and Google Chrome on my Windows 7 computer. After about 30 minutes or so, all the programs was not responding.
After about 5 minutes or so, the screen shook and lines were on it. After that, I got the Blue Screen Of Death.
I restarted the computer. After the dell logo and below your computer type (Inspiron, Inspiron One etc), (before you see the Windows Error Recovery screen) I got an error message that said "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reRECOVERY."
When I press Ctrl, Alt and Delete, The computer restarts and I get the same error message. Then, I have to shut down the computer and leave it off for at least an hour.
After an hour, I turned on the computer and I did not get the error message. After I logged in, I scanned for viruses, spyware and malware with the latest versions of all my antivirus programs and no was found. I tried everything I could do and none of them worked. I am posting this thread on my iMac computer with Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7.

I have a workstation on a gaming rig. I work and play games on it. I wanted to ask if I could separate my work files and GAMES setups (installed files) so they don't harm my work data.I do play games with cheats/hacks and they mostly contain malicious files which can damage my operating system. I want to create a seperate DISK image like Vmware in which I can run games without being worried about any harmful files accessing my work partition.

What is the difference between MS Windows 7 Backup and MS Synctoy? I am using Windows 7 Backup and only back up the four Libraries and some additional locations off of the C: drive totalling about 45 GB and Windows7 Backup now requires 151 GB of disk space on my external hard drive which only has 70 GB remaining on a 250 GB hard drive.. I think W7 Backup up creates zip files, but it seems like it uses a lot of space otherwise.I am deciding whether to buy a larger (1 TB) external hard drive and continue backup or to start copying the libraries one at a time.

I got my new computer about 3 weeks ago, but because the video card I picked was out of stock (GTX 680) they installed a standard video card (GT 520) instead. I'll be getting my GTX 680 tomorrow, and I'm thinking about doing a clean installation with Windows 7. I've already installed Windows 7 once when I received my computer, and made a few registry changes 'cause I have an SSD. I'm not quite sure if I should delete or format my SSD and HDD when doing a clean installation. Also, I own an Intel SSD and I read online that it's better to use the Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox when resetting the drive to its original rather than deleting/formatting.

I have a Gateway P 7805U. It came with a single 320GB HD. It came with Vista but I upgraded to 7. I want to install two 1 TB HDs set up as RAID 1. I was told by MS that I would not be able to transfer my OEM Vista to the new HD and that I would have to buy a full version of 7 to install on the new HDs. What is the difference between the system builder and the retail version of 7? Will I be able to to a full install with the system builder?

I keep reading about older versions of Windows 7 Ultimate. Meaning the newer ones are different? I am going to purchase Windows 7 Ultimate but is there a difference? I can get a fairly decent price on A site for an older version of Windows 7 Ultimate so is the smarter choice to purchase the newer though more costly versions, or the older versions at the cheaper price. ( at least 75 dollars up to 100 dollars USD difference in prices)?

I recently had a laptop crash (Windows 7 Home Premium x64) during a windows update, had to go through lengthy process which ultimately resulted in need to do system recovery from protected partition on an Acer laptop.
One of the interim steps i had tried was to run chkdsk from a command prompt after having been able to reach "repair your computer". I originally had to create a repair disk to get there, but eventually was able to access it from the computer's hard drive.
Run from the command prompt under start-up repair, the chkdsk was PAINFULLY slow, running for more than 12 hours and without getting through the first step. Granted, it did seem to be trying to fix errors.
I came across something about it being slow based on allocation of system resources in the start-up repair. I wanted to see if anyone could elaborate on that. Now that I've gotten the system recovery working, I'd like to run chkdsk again, and I don't want that to take days. My thought is to run it from an elevated command prompt (run as administrator). I'm also thinking that the /x switch will be needed to run this on the c:drive.

I have been debating between which one I want to go with for my next card. Apparently, AMD isn't going to be updating the driver for the 4800 series to Windows 8 (which really ticks me off...). That is why I'm considering nVidia for the first time. Few things I want to do with a new card:
- Gaming at 1920x1080 graphics maxed, or close to at frame rates of at least 60.
- Some bitcoin mining (nothing serious, just curious about it), and possibly some other GPGPU related stuff.
Also, the card needs to work well in both Windows and Linux x64 as I use both. The only nVidia Ive ever worked with was an old Quadro FX 1400, which I put into a Dell Optiplex GX280, and it runs great under Linux and Windows.
