View 7 RepliesWe're on a network and all the pcs only have one user and therefore I am administrator of all. One pc now won't let me access stuff. When I try and go into Windows defender or Manage windows start up programs, a window comes up saying "contact Administrator". ?? Can't access folder options either. There's a virus on it (darn kids) which I'm trying to get rid of (despite having McAfee, Windows defender, Ad-Aware and Stinger). Could it be the virus causing this? which is hard of course to get rid of if I can't have any access to security files.

Been trying to get it to work for a week or 2
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running windows home premium 32-bit on a personal computer; no network administrators or anything, no users other than myself, and no other user accounts other than this one, which is marked as administrator. I seem to be unable to run windows update as an administrator, though. When I go to change the settings, they ones for when windows update runs(the four that control what it does automatically and what it prompts me for, as well as the time and frequency it would run automatically) are grayed out. There's a note at the top that some of these may only be accessible my my system administrator(me). This is a picture of the settings page: i29.tinypic.com/jfc2ut.jpg
I tracked down wuapp.exe in system32 and tried to run that as an administrator via right click; no change in behavior. Tried to go and check the "run as administrator" box in its properties, but that's disabled. That seems to be true of everything in the system32 folder, perhaps there's some way I can circumvent this block?...............
I set up my Vista installation so that I am administrator with all priviledges. I now have installed an old HDD and want to remove the Windows folder. Vista says that I don't have access. I have checked the attributes and nothing is read only. I also have tried the DOS prompt and DEL *.* How do I remove the folder??
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently had a major computer problems are due to installing an errant copy of SP2 on my Vista Ultimate + SP1. I was fortunately able to recover everything and I'm back in business except that Windows Update only does Windows; it no longer does stuff like look for updates for Office. When I try to include these kind of things I get told I have to log in as Administrator or become a member of the Administrators Group. I am logged on
as an administrator with administrator privileges.
now i tried to run sysprep for Windows Vista i just install on the PCs, but i was not success to do it. When run sysprep with this command "sysprep /oobe /generalize /unattend:unattend.xml" it will auto delete all drivers installed on vista. The things there are i want to make 1 image Vista Bussiness installed drivers, default enabled administrator account (normally when run sysprep it will disabled administrator account).

I have Vista and I accidentally put my name in as the administrator when I setup my laptop, for work purposes it's supposed to be named "Administrator". I try to change it but I get a message "The specified account name is not valid, because there is already an account with that name. Please try a different name". Is there a way to change it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition. I am the only user on my computer. I am the administrator. I have UAC disabled. When running certain programs however I get a message telling me that I need to be Administrator to run this program. It has happened a couple of times but I haven't really paid attention to it due to it being resolved automatically or me not really caring. I try the "run as administrator" option, but it doesn't change anything.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had a problem for a while now. Every time I open Windows Mail up, or the news groups, I get a message saying Windows mail isn't my default mail program, and asks if I want it to be. I click yes every time, but I will still get this message when I open Windows Mail again the next day. Everything's works OK after I click this message. No other errors or anything.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi also tried to change my default email to windows live, it doesn't work, comes up w/ some weird kind of mail that doesn't send messages (not sure if it's trying to use windows mail even tho it's set to windows live mail, or what). so, i'm trying to set up my windows live account (which is new, just set it up a couple of months ago), through windows mail. tried setting to pop3.live.com and smtp.live.com and when it goes to connect i keep getting this error message:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop3.live.com', Server: 'pop3.live.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:

i really want my default e-mail server to be set up to something that works. and i do not want to go back to using my yahoo account.
How stable is Windows Live Mail? Does it convert your old Windows Mail messages and keep storing messages on your computer, or only online? And what about Contacts? Is there something good to read to read about moving from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail? The material at is pretty superficial.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhat, if any, inferences can be drawn from the fact that there are typically three times more posts about Windows Mail (WM) than Windows Live Mail (WLM). Could it be that:
(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?
(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?
(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?
My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. I am cross-posting this to both newsgroups and suggest that replies go to WM as it has the larger following.
I'm unable to send emails in my windows mail. When i select 'send/receive' a pop-message comes up telling me: The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The message says the installer requires the user to be logged on as Administrator and that I'm supposed to do this. This problem reoccurred several days ago and this message pops up every 5 minutes or so. Additionally, it affects outgoing mail as well by either not sending it immediately or delaying sending it. I'm the only person using this computer. I am using Windows Vista anmd this happened a lot for a while, then stopped, then started agin. but this time it seems to have returned with a vengance.

common windows update error is Windows Update error 8007000b.
When I have the command prompt up it shows users

clicking and do not get administrator in the drop down menu. I type in
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:. and an reply comes back that I must
run it as a administator. I have also tried keying this in just at the c:

do not get the drop menu on the right click to show administrator?
