I have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for the last 5 months and have to say it's been a massive learing curve due to its fragility - 4 full rebuilds in the last 4 months - and not much fun when using SATA RAID. Anyway, got up yesterday morning, turned on the computer and it had managed to corrupt itself yet again: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer and a host of desktop icons refused to find their pathways home and so decided against a full rebuild and started the repair option with a boot to the DVD. I set this off running and went to work at 12:30pm...
I came back 5 hours later and still had the dialog box " Finalising Registry" running on my screen! Well, a quick restart and i tried the upgrade option once back in Vista from the DVD. This then took and unbelievable 7 hours to complete and was finally ready - after updates - at 01:20am this morning, but a full clean install would have taken about 1-2 hours to finish, so i'll be doing that in future!.........

We're on a network and all the pcs only have one user and therefore I am administrator of all. One pc now won't let me access stuff. When I try and go into Windows defender or Manage windows start up programs, a window comes up saying "contact Administrator". ?? Can't access folder options either. There's a virus on it (darn kids) which I'm trying to get rid of (despite having McAfee, Windows defender, Ad-Aware and Stinger). Could it be the virus causing this? which is hard of course to get rid of if I can't have any access to security files.

when I start up my PC (running Vista64 sp2 OS) my sidebar has a white background instead of the usual translucent one. If I close the side bar, the white background remains with holes in it where the Gadget icons were. Logging off of Windows Vista and then back on again fixes the problem. Has anyone else had this specific problem? Is this a glitch with Vista OS and there is no cure?

hi to all and tnx in advance for support,i've installed 4Gb RAM on my Notebook Toshiba with Intel T5500,Northbridge Intel i945PM rev. 03 and Southbridge Intel 82801GHM (ICH7-M
DH) rev. 02.
After memory update i've installed *Vista x64 Ultimate SP1* and System Info under Control Panel says 4,00Gb Ram Memory but *Task Manager says only 3069Mb Physical Memory*.
Moreover i ran msconfig and deselected MaxMemory flag in Advanced Options under Boot tab (as i saw somewhere on internet )but nothing changes. The bios recognizes correctly 4Gb, and programs like CPU-Z recognizes 4Gb, but msinfo says:
- - Installed Physical Memory (RAM): *4Gb*-
- - Total Physical Memory: *3Gb*.-

Managed to kill my raid 0, 1 terabyte games drive today. Absolutely shattered. Maybe ten hours worth of installs on that drive. To say that I am upset is an understatement. You live and learn. Will be purchasing an extra backup drive exclusively for backing up this drive. Never will I feel this pain again

I tried to change my SID number (Security Identifier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) with a program called newsid.exe (NewSID v4.10) and it closed out before it was done. Before this happened, I had only one account named 'Rhodes' with administrative privileges and no password. Then I restarted my computer and it had an account named 'Rhodes' and an account name 'Other User'. I clicked on Rhodes (it still had no password) and it went to my desktop but the desktop looked like it was when I first got it, at factory default settings. Everything I had downloaded was gone, including my music, programs, and pictures.
All my settings had been reset to default. And administrative rights were gone. The first thing I did was look at my Users in Control Panel and all I saw was 'Rhodes' and disabled 'Guest'. I didn't see 'Other User' here so I went and looked on my C Drive and found the 'Users' folder and checked in there. It has a 'Rhodes' and a 'Rhodes.RhodesPC'. If I click on 'Rhodes' it tells me I don't have permission to access this folder. If I click on Rhodes.RhodesPC it brings me to the folders of the account I am currently on (the 'Rhodes' without administrative privileges). I have tried creating a new administrator account a few different ways (including an elevated command prompt in safe mode) but I can't get anything to work. And I can't get to the hidden administrator account in Vista, I tried that too. What I'd like to do is gain access to my old 'Rhodes' account, the one with administrative rights. I tried System Restore but I get the error 'There was an unexpected error: Class not reigstered (0x80040154) Please close System Restore and try again.

I have went to the trouble section on windows. I have right clicked on it and tried to even check in as administrator and that option is not available in control panel, it is in menu options, but it does not let me uninstall in menu opitions.

Vista Ultimate SP1+. On a couple occasions after turning Windows Sidebar off and later back on I've noticed its sys tray icon has changed to the same icon Windows Defender uses. After a warm boot Sidebar seems to sort itself out. Any rhyme or reason for this?

I'm sure everyone knows that Windows Sidebar can potentially destroy the amount of RAM that is available on your PC, but I'm having sort of an unusual problem with this. When Windows Sidebar is loaded, the amount of RAM that it occupies is about 20MB, which is certainly acceptable for me. However, after the course of 6 or so hours the RAM increases upwards of 120MB, and after 12 hours, nearly 200MB! This just doesn't seem right. I'm assuming Sidebar is stored some previous information via RAM, but I really can't see this information being necessary at all. Is there anyway I can put a cap on the amount of RAM that Sidebar uses? Or even some other method to reduce the RAM usage?

So ever since I got my computer I can't get the sidebar to work. I can bring it up and add gadgets but they don't function properly and they only have an X on the right hand side (no magnifying glass to edit options). So basically, the sidebar works but the gadgets don't?? Some of the graphics will show up but they don't function...this is very frustrating and I've spent lots of time trouble shooting and trying to figure out possibilities

I am a noob to the forums and a new Vista user. I am running Vista Home Basic. I ran sfc and it determined I had some corrupt files that could not be repaired. I determined that the files were all related to windows sidebar. My question is, can I reinstall windows sidebar and if so how is this done?

I've been getting that message for a while. When I try to look at the Sidebar properties, which I find using the Start/Search feature, nothing opens. When I go to the Sidebar folder in C:/Program Files/Windows Sidebar, there are 3 items there: a subfolder labeled Gadgets, a Configuration Settings icon labeled Settings, and a Sidebar application icon. If I click on the application icon, I just get the "Windows sidebar is not working" message. All of this happened after a System Restore a couple of months ago.

I recently purchase a new pc with Windows Vista Home Premium. We have one user account with a password. I installed some new software and decided to uninstall it - I keep getting a message "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation". I then get a message that says "you do not have enough access to uninstall this program. Please contact your system administrator".

I had problems with the "windows sidebar stopped working" messages appearing on a regular basis. I have only windows stock gadgets in the sidebar. A while ago I even removed one gadget at the time to see if it would stop crashing but it didn't. Yesterday I reformatted my computer because of another problem I had and one of the first things that happened was "windows sidebar stopped working". It happened again today. I still have almost only drivers and windows updates installed so what can be causing this problem?

I'm reading your tutorial on returning Ownership. I want to do this for the "Windows Sidebar". Before I proceed, just wanted to confirm that the Owner of this Directory and all it's subdirectories should be "trusted installer" NOTE: My system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit Also, will this return the permissions back to what they were prior to my taking Ownership? I hope the answer is "yes". I tried the System Restore first, but apparently I changed this too long ago and it does not revert the Ownership back to it's original Ownership
