Windows Update: Administrator Or Become A Member Of The Administrators Group
Apr 27, 2009
I recently had a major computer problems are due to installing an errant copy of SP2 on my Vista Ultimate + SP1. I was fortunately able to recover everything and I'm back in business except that Windows Update only does Windows; it no longer does stuff like look for updates for Office. When I try to include these kind of things I get told I have to log in as Administrator or become a member of the Administrators Group. I am logged on
as an administrator with administrator privileges.

My computer upstairs is stuck,I have 3 users on the computer one used to be an administrator and the others were standard users with parental controls.Well now somone got into the parental controls and changed something to make all the users standard and no administrator. So now they can't do anything and it keeps asking for a administrators password and there is no administrator.

I'm running windows home premium 32-bit on a personal computer; no network administrators or anything, no users other than myself, and no other user accounts other than this one, which is marked as administrator. I seem to be unable to run windows update as an administrator, though. When I go to change the settings, they ones for when windows update runs(the four that control what it does automatically and what it prompts me for, as well as the time and frequency it would run automatically) are grayed out. There's a note at the top that some of these may only be accessible my my system administrator(me). This is a picture of the settings page: i29.tinypic.com/jfc2ut.jpg
I tracked down wuapp.exe in system32 and tried to run that as an administrator via right click; no change in behavior. Tried to go and check the "run as administrator" box in its properties, but that's disabled. That seems to be true of everything in the system32 folder, perhaps there's some way I can circumvent this block?...............

We're on a network and all the pcs only have one user and therefore I am administrator of all. One pc now won't let me access stuff. When I try and go into Windows defender or Manage windows start up programs, a window comes up saying "contact Administrator". ?? Can't access folder options either. There's a virus on it (darn kids) which I'm trying to get rid of (despite having McAfee, Windows defender, Ad-Aware and Stinger). Could it be the virus causing this? which is hard of course to get rid of if I can't have any access to security files.

In every way that I check, I am the Administrator. Nevertheless, everytime I try to update Office 2007 with MS patches, it tells me that I must be and Administrator in order to update. What on earth do I have to do? I tried going directly to MS home page, by clicking Windows update from my Start Menu, but it just ends with the same message with no choice to respond. If I check the User Accounts, it shows me as an Administrator. Suggestions?

I started my MCITP training. Our trainer told us, that there is a limit of maximum 25 Vista clients in a Vista workgroup. Is this correct? From my point of knowledge, there is only a limitation of 10 concurrent incomming connections. There is no limitation on the number of members in a workgroup.I know, a workgroup with above 20 clients for file- and printsharing makes no sence, but is there a limitation?

I need to go to a branch office and make several Vista machines members of our corporate domain (they were set up as stand alone machines because we did not a a VPN at the branch office, but now we do). When I make the machines members of the domain, what issues will I run into copying profile settings (documents, printers, etc) into their domain account from their non-domain account.

Been lurking for a bit, just signed up. Built the system in my profile. I am learning Vista so will probably have lots of questions.
I originally loaded Vista 64 on a 65GB OZ SSD. Seemed to be quickly filling up without any major software load, so decided to put the OS on my 500GB drive. Put the page file on the SSD, and user folders on the 1TB data drive. I saw a couple of posts here saying that the OS will work better/faster on a smaller partition. What size partition would you recommend for Vista 64 on the 500GB drive?

I'm sure you are well aware now of the advantages and disadvantages of UAC. It is great for non-admin users because it protects their computer from themselves. For advanced users, it can be a much different story causing many annoying authorization pop-ups. This is most common when you are doing a lot of activities that require admin rights such as installing applications and configuring Windows Vista after a fresh install. There is one practical solution to this issue that will help you with the UAC pop-ups if they annoy you and still benefit from the security of UAC.
This can be achieved by adjusting the local security policy to essentially disable UAC for administrators while leaving it enabled for low rights users. When you are using your PC for normal day-to-day use, log in with your low rights account. If you need to install a bunch of applications and make major system configuration changes then log in with your admin account. With fast user switching in Windows Vista you can easily switch between your accounts with little effort....

We are having trouble adding new groups in Windows Mail. For some reason, it no longer gives us the option of choosing to add a group instead of a single contact. I've clicked on "File" then "New" but "Contact Group" or "Group" is not an option, nor is there a group button on the toolbar. Is there a problem with our settings? We used to be able to add them and now we can't unless we copy an existing group.

I have two questions first is where do I find the Windows 7 Disscussion Group. Have posted here because was unable to locate the windows 7 Discussion Group. My computer which is a SAMSUNG N110 3 months old has become very very very slow. It has Windows 7 installed I have upgraded the memory to two GIG. I have antivirus software and Anti Malware bytes installed.
The problem i have is that the machine seems to slow down and sometimes crash whenever I click on internet explorer and many other applications such as office 2007 etc, etc. I have run the Norton Virus protection which was clean - I run the Malaware and picked up several Trojans which i have cleared. The problem is still extant.

I've been trying for a few days to set up a group mail list but keep getting
an individual error message back for each address on the list (5.1.1 - Bad
destination email address 'invalid domain "": no dot found') I have made
individual contacts of each person thati wish to send to (as despite what the
help file says about clicking the toolbar and choosing "group" all I ever
have available to me is the individual contacts. I then put all of these
contacts in one named directory in the contacts folder but this folder is not
available to me when I go to send a new EMail.

That is the message I get from the icon in my Vista tray. When I try to manually check for Windows Updates I get the message that I need to "first install an update for Windows Update". When I try to install that update for Windows Update, I get error code 80070643. There is a lot written about Windows Update error 80070643 having specifically to do with restarting the Office Source Engine for Microsoft Office 2003. HOWEVER, I do not have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system and this is not my issue! I am quite fearful at this point that I am vulnerable to all sorts of attacks considering that I haven't updated Vista for about 6 months now. This is not good.

I'm sure I must be doing something wrong, but I have Windows Mail on a laptop using Vista. It works fine, but all of a sudden, I can't fine how to add a new contact or group. I think I recall it being pretty easy and self explanatory before, so I think I must have some hidden files somewhere. However, I tried everything I can think of.

I use Windows mail for my e-mail and news group access. When I access my comcast e-mail (where all the info is correctly entered and stored in the account setup) I have no problem. When I try to access my newsgroup (where all my info is correctly entered and stored in the account setup) a Windows Security window pops up, displays my Vista PC administrator symbol and asks me for a user name and password to access the newsgroup account. I enter the correct info and Windows Security screen will not accept it. I had never ever been asked for a user name and password by a Windows Security Pop Up before and it doesn't ask me for that info on my e-mail.

Microsoft Update was first released a few years ago for Windows XP and Server 2003 as a great way to update all of your Microsoft software installed on your PC. Not only would it update Windows, but it would also update Microsoft Office. Are you a Microsoft Outlook user? If so, Microsoft Update would even download updated junk mail signatures when they are released.
In Windows Vista the new Windows Update application is no longer web-based. Microsoft has built-in the old Microsoft Update functionality into the new interface but you need to turn it on before you can use it. Follow these steps to turn on updates for other Microsoft applications: ...
