Making PC Member Of Domain-Profile?
Jun 18, 2008
I need to go to a branch office and make several Vista machines members of our corporate domain (they were set up as stand alone machines because we did not a a VPN at the branch office, but now we do). When I make the machines members of the domain, what issues will I run into copying profile settings (documents, printers, etc) into their domain account from their non-domain account.

I started my MCITP training. Our trainer told us, that there is a limit of maximum 25 Vista clients in a Vista workgroup. Is this correct? From my point of knowledge, there is only a limitation of 10 concurrent incomming connections. There is no limitation on the number of members in a workgroup.I know, a workgroup with above 20 clients for file- and printsharing makes no sence, but is there a limitation?

Been lurking for a bit, just signed up. Built the system in my profile. I am learning Vista so will probably have lots of questions.
I originally loaded Vista 64 on a 65GB OZ SSD. Seemed to be quickly filling up without any major software load, so decided to put the OS on my 500GB drive. Put the page file on the SSD, and user folders on the 1TB data drive. I saw a couple of posts here saying that the OS will work better/faster on a smaller partition. What size partition would you recommend for Vista 64 on the 500GB drive?

I recently had a major computer problems are due to installing an errant copy of SP2 on my Vista Ultimate + SP1. I was fortunately able to recover everything and I'm back in business except that Windows Update only does Windows; it no longer does stuff like look for updates for Office. When I try to include these kind of things I get told I have to log in as Administrator or become a member of the Administrators Group. I am logged on
as an administrator with administrator privileges.

3 days ago my computer started making very quiet beeping sounds, it happens mostly when I use Mozilla Firefox and Windows Explorer. My impression is that the sound is coming from the motherboard. When I restarted in safe mode the sound disappeared,
so after a very long elimination process I discovered that when I change control panel-power options-processor power management settings the frequency of beeping changes as well. Until now I was using balanced settings (min processor state 5% and max processor state 100%), if I choose high performance (min and max processor state are both 100%) the beeping becomes very frequent almost continuous, and if I choose power saver settings (min processor state 5% and max processor state 50%) I don't notice the beeping anymore but of course I don't want to keep using only 50% of my processor. I am using a desktop computer, not a laptop. Except for the annoying sound the computer works normally. I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP1.

I followed VistaRookie's 10 step procedure for making a signature with a logo. It worked. Then I added more information and now it doesn't work. My email shows the code stuff instead of just the info and logo. I don't know what I did wrong. I deleted the first try and made the new HTM file using the same steps.

I'm working with a Windows Vista HP Pavillion PC. No hardware has been modified. I'm not sure which version I have, I think I have all but the most recent update. ~I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem or not, but here goes. Anyway, about 4 months ago, my computer started acting odd. It would make an odd ticking, or clicking noise and start running slow. It sounds like an odd tick-tock noise. It seems to originate in the front of the computer, lower left side. Theres about a .5 second delay between the tick and tock noise. It keeps making that noise about every 3 seconds. It will seemingly stop and start doing this at random.
The slow downs are always associated with the tick-tock noise. I found out that when it's doing that, the computer starts functioning worse in general. Instead of running at normal CPU capacity, it limits itself to about 15% of it's power. Nothing huge is running in the background to suck up it's power. It just goes into "dumb mode". When this happened 4 months ago, I did a full system restore and that fixed it. Now it's happening again. I've already done a system restore. However, it doesn't want to boot up now. It's stuck on a please wait screen. So, has anyone suffered through this problem

I am trying to attach pictures to an outgoing email and they are inserting into the email way too large. Is there a solution to this? I have tried using Microsoft Picture Gallery and creating an email that way, but it won't let me. Outlook had a "wizard" for pictures so it was really easy.

Have a Vista 32 Premium Home Edition and on the advice of "Goddess", I need to make a password recovery disk, as I just changed the Administrators Password. I see some sites online, but they say something about a USB Flashdrive, and I don't think I have this?!? Also, I trust more the people on this site who give advice, info and instructions.I do have a DVD/CD burner.

I'd like to back up a couple machines with full drive copies for use in case of a drive crash & replacement. I need a program to do the backup and that will allow me to do the restore without building a new system first (i.e. boot from a CD and restore to a bare drive).

The wife has a box with 64bit Vista and someone ran a registery cleaner on it and cleaned the registery so clean that the system would not start windows. It went through the screen that gave the choices for set-up, recovery, etc then the safe, normal, etc start screen and regardless of what chose it would go dark and windows would never start but the activity light would keep flickering showing it was trying to do something. I took it in and repair used the recovery disk to set it back to factory setup!! :-(Is it possible to make a to make a recovery disk (as the factory labeled it) of the way I get it set that would be like the factory recovery disk which has a rcd.dat file and an image directory on disk 1 and a rcd2.dat file and an image directory on disk 2 so if the thing crashed again at the startup options screen that has the recovery option I could just use my home made recovery disk instead of the factory ones??
I know I can make a backup but if the system will not get past the screen with the recovery option what good are they. Will accept any comments on backups as long as I can also get an answer to the original recovery disk question also. Would be nice if I could do this on wife Vista box AND my XP box.

Under XP I could copy application shortcuts to a menu that you would see above programs when you first click start. I would put it under all users > start menu folder. is there anything similar in vista (and windows 7) when I am using the vista / windows 7 start menu instead of the XP style Start menu?

I have XP Pro on my desktop PC & I know that I can stop & disable services. I also know that some services depend on other services to run. So, I have some questions about Home Premium versus Ultimate. First question is: Will Home Premium allow one to stop & disable any services - any services at all?
I want to build a PC & I think that I'd be perfectly happy with Home Premium. But, I might want to try Virtual PC & I know that I need Ultimate for that. I assume that Ultimate is like XP Pro & will allow me to stop & disable services. Am I correct?
For example, I will be the only person using the PC so I don't need Group Policy. Can that service be stopped & disabled? My PC will never be joined to a domain. Can that service be stopped & disabled? I might use the file encryption service. So, in other words, I'd like to make Ultimate more like Home Premium. Can I do that by turning off certain Ultimate features? What are Ultimate Extras?

I have Acronis True Image and before I went the dual boot system route (XP + Vista x64), I made an image of my XP system but now that I am comfortable with both OS's, I would like to know if Acronis can make an image of my drive including both systems?
Before attempting to do this on my own and botching the already good image I have, I would like to hear it from the Gurus so... what say you? Oh, also, I have heard that Acronis can do this but nobody specified if I should start Acronis in Vista or in XP and that is another thing that baffles me. It shouldn't matter where I start the image process but making sure is my first priority since I tend to screw up things fairly quick when I go out guns blazing (so to speak!)

I have a laptop that was running Vista 64bit Enterprise fine. It's disk is also protected by bitlocker. It is now in a state where none of the recovery console options seems able to recognize the drive. From a command line bootrec.exe I can see the disk and it's original partitions of proper sizes. However they are 'hidden' and there are no visible volumes. Is there any good way to restore the information that would make the disk recoverable?

I recently tried to restore windows vista to original factory settings from the Recovery partition that came with my computer. However, I mistakenly made the recovery partition active because I thought that was part of the process. Now the computer is trying to boot from the wrong partition and thus saying things like "BOOTMGR missing press alt ctr del to restart" I do not have a recovery disk or the original installation. I have a recovery disk from another computer that I thought was going to work but when it showed me the recovery options it said it was incompatible with this machine. Is there some way I can access a command prompt so I can reset the correct partition through diskpart or something similar?

I'm setting up a new Windows Server 2003 server for my company, with a
mixture of XP and Vista machines connecting to the server. I have created a
domain, and I can connect all my XP machines to the domain just fine.
The trouble with Vista is that whenever I try to log into the domain, the
screen comes up with an error:
"The User Profile Service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded."
Unfortunitely I'm not a major networking guru, so I can't really figure out
what Vista is expecting here just to connect to a domain. I assumed that
something this basic in networking wouldn't have been so complicated.

Why does it take so long for Vista to join a domain? I have a vista pro machine. Locally everything works fine local user signs on builds the desktop quickly. From the local profile I join a domain. It finds the domain quickly, then asks to reboot.. I reboot sign on as the admin of the domain.. Next step is to build the desktop for the user I'm signing on as.. It just sits on the welcome screen spinning. I do not experience this problem on XP machines joining this same domain. I've also tested it on a Windows 7 machine and did not experience this problem.. I can't figure out why it takes so long on Vista.. I actually never get to the point of building the desktop..I don't really see any hard drive activity either?

We are running at my work 2 workgroups. My CoWorker and I are on a domain and need to connect to one of the servers on the workgroup using a simulation program. We get access denied error messages in the simulator program. Windows Explorer connects just fine to the workgroup server though.
We think there is a problem with the password security policy on the workgroup not being up to standard of my domain's security policy. The password to log into the server causes an error message saying the password is "too long, too short, or not complex enough." when we try to create a user account.

We have a Windows Server 2003 active directory domain, ISA server with VPN, and one Windows Vista client. The Vista owner calls me every time he wants to connect with VPN, and tells me that he cannot. Looking in Active Directory shows me, that his domain user account is locked out. When I unlock the account he is able to login. It seems that something (a service? office 2007?) does try to authenticate with wrong credentials, and locks his account every time it can.
I have the default settings for the account lockout policy, threshold of 3, and 0 for lockout duration. This problem is really annoying so much, that I think about to tell him to uninstall Vista and install XP again. The XP users don't have this problem at all. I've looked around in the web and found some other users that have the same problem. But I found no solution for it.
