System Is Slow After Having Ultimate Extra Update
May 29, 2008
i was just installing some extra languages on the ultimate extra update, i just selected all the updates to download as i was in a rush go leave home, it came up to about 5gb, it wasnt a problem because i was going out for about 4 hours. i came back home, download was complete and was installing the language packs, at first i thought it was stuck because computer started to run extra sluggish, but just as i was about to restart computer the bar moved, so i just waited, just doing some browsing etc on this forum, researching and getting tips and tricks etc., despite the fact that it was still running slow..i checked the cpu usage, the cpu was fine, but with suprise, the ram was running about 1.9gb ( i have 2gb ram). first of all, is the language pack suppose to take that long to install? and is it suppose to use that much of the ram?

I am really not very good with hardware, but I want to install some new USB 3.0 ports. I have selected a card, ASUS U2S6 USB3.0/Sata3 6Gbps PCIE Card and I want to install it. I have checked my computer and I do have the required PCI-E port. That is not the problem. Just two questions:
1) This website seems to suggest that it will only work on some very selected motherboards. Asus U3S6 USB3.0 & SATA 6Gbps PCI-Express Controller Card [U3S6] Controller Cards SATA III 6Gbps
Compatible motherboards: P7P55D Deluxe, P7P55D EVO, P7P55D PRO, P7P55D, P7P55D LE, P7P55 LX However, my motherboard is not listed. I thought that PCI-E cards were just meant to be insert and install drivers. Is this not the case?
2) Also, I have noticed that this card does not require additional power. Does this mean that it might not be able to power some of the more power consuming USB gadgets that I might buy? Therefore, would this be a better choice: UNITEK 2 Port USB 3.0 PCI Express Card Reviewed.
I do have a spare Molex power cable, so that would not be a problem, though an extension would be required (again not a problem) I do like the idea of having the extra SATA3 connections (and I know that using them may slow things down) but primarily this is for my USBs, so I want proper functionality.

There must have been a Windows update or something because now I have a big white balloon that comes up in my system tray, every time I load up the computer. This has only been coming up in the last few weeks or so, which makes me think it is a Windows update. The balloon shows a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark inside. It states, "Windows has blocked some startup programmes. Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs."
I did this and it showed me the programmes I always have a on the start menu anyway, with a sign saying 'permitted' for each one, whereas I know this already. Then there are other, new programs, I have never seen before, under the banner 'Windows Defender' with signs saying 'Not Yet Classified.' Eventually, in the same boot up session, I can eventually get rid of the balloon. After that it shows in the system tray, with all my other items already there, as a square turquoise icon with a red circle and a red line across it diagonally, on a white background and this sits on the bottom left of the turquoise icon.

I've had vista for around 10 months and never really had a problem with the internet but in the last week I've noticed it is running really slowly. No explaination it just runs slow, really slow. I have AVG, stopped running that, I've rolled back recent windows updates, I've done a system restore to last week. My network card has a greyed out rollback button so can't do that.
Also I've ran some speed tests and I get around 250k download and a 690k upload which again is strange, but I've ran the same test on a eeePC running linux and a laptop running XP and get 1mb download with a 690k upload.

I have a pc that has been booting slow and I checked in the performance area and found two issues effecting the system. One is for slow startup, and it gives me three programs that are doing this. I see one I will not be able to do anything with and two I should. They are:
1.) Symantec ( 67.7 seconds) ccSvchst.exe
2.) Acrobat Distiller (51.1 seconds) acrodist.exe
3.) Windows Mail (28.4 seconds) WinMail.exe
I went to find the programs and get them to stop loading "2 and 3) but they still load up. How do I stop them from loading on startup? Also on the other issue for visual settings. I tried to goto basic vista display but still get this Performance issue coming up in the Advanced tools area.

I've tried all the common fixes posted around the net. I get a two minute boot in safe mode and in reg mode with nothing in the startup. I feel that after looking at the bootlog file that it has something to do with drivers that don't load during the boot. According to the log I have dozens and dozens of drivers that apparently don't load. Here is a sample of the log. I don't enclose the whole log because it is very large. I will if necessary:

Last Thursday my pc downloaded and installed the latest set of updates and since then the Internet speed has been sluggish at best and non-existant at worst.
I contacted my ISP and they did all their tests and announced that the signal was good and I might have a virus, so I got a bit paranoid and ran scan after scan (after the nightmare of trying to get the latest updates). I ran these with Zone Alarm Extreme and Spyware Doctor (but not together) and all the results were clean.
So I'm wondering if the latest Updates are to blame; one of the kids' laptops has exactly the same problem (he uses a router while I use a cable) and he downloaded the updates at the same time.
Interestingly the other kid's laptop seems to be untouched, but he has 32 bit Vista as opposed to our 64 bit, and it appears that we're all using different browsers (IE8, Mozilla and Chrome)

I downloaded and installed MS update KB980182 and now the computer runs a lot slower when I am using Internet Explorer. I have done everything I can think of to rectify the problem but it does no good. When I unistall the update, IE runs at its normal speed and when I reinstall it, the problem returns, therefore it has something to do with this update.

I've recently put together a new computer using these parts: I've updated to Vista Ultimate SP1, run multiple disk clean ups, defrags, use CCleaner, clean the registry, defrag the registry, disabled services and have made tweaks according to the guide provided on this website and have minimal startup programs running but my boot times average around 2 minutes. For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.

My CPU will idle around 30%, and my memory will idle around 40%. I have 3.5GB of ram, and a dualcore 2.4GHZ cpu. I was checking windows update, and it says it cannot download any updates, and it's most recent check was on 9/9/2008. I tried manually downloaded the windows vista service pack 1, but it keeps failing and giving me error 80070026. Some people suggested I turn off things like real time protection, so I uninstalled my McAfee virus scan, and downloaded windows defender instead. I then disabled real time protection on the window's defender. Nothing else should have real time protection, so why can't I update?

For the last few days my 'pc' (http://www.vistax64.com/) takes three and half minutes to load. I did have the windows update KB954430 installed around that time. All malware and virus scans come up clean. Could this update be the problem? It takes 90 sec. to get to the welcome screen, then the screen goes black untill the programs begin to load at 195 seconds. the loading of programs seems to be in a normal time frame.

I am going to sound like a real big rookie, well because I am. My portable computer is for business use only. I seem to never use the battery as I am always plugged in somewhere. It seems like if I have a long update on a slower connection like anti-virus or windows update the computer shuts down after awhile. I am thinking these updates are not finishing. I would be working on my business and my connection would be very very slow. They suddenly it would spead up to a good usable speed. I noticed that after I got a message that an update had finally finished that matched me finally being able to work. I want to know how to keep Vista from shutting down and allow updates and downloads to complete while I am asleep so when I am at the computer I can work. I have a ton to learn.

I have installed the OS fine with 2 gb of memory and now want to add the send set of 2gb to go to 4gb. I have heard you need SP1 in order to do this. I went to update to SP1 and read some forms that if all the drivers are up to date it should come in the auto d/ls I have done all the automatic updates and no SP1. All drivers on the system are up to date. I was going to just d/l it and install mannually but read it is not a good idea as people have had major issues like blue screens ect once they do this. And it is safer to wait for automatic updates to do this to ensure system is in line with sp1

I just built a new PC with Vista Ultimate 64 service pack 1 installed. When i run Windows update, it says "Windows is up to date" and no options for updates are available. There are no errors given. I am trying to install drivers for my graphics card (evga eGeforce 9600 GT in a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard) and when i restart I keep getting the Blue Screen of Death so I wanted to make sure and get all the latest Windows updates. The native Windows video driver works fine, but I want to use dual monitors.

I need to update my Windows Vista 64bit Ultimate and I know they are working on adding it to the automatic updates but I can not wait as I need to add in memory and it will not see anything over 2gb with out SP1. I went to Microsoft's website and found this but not sure this is correct so I wanted to make 100% sure this is the correct update for me and my software as there are several version of Vista out.

A long time ago, Windows Update installed SP1 on my Home Premium system and it shows that in the Control Panel>System display. However, I recently re-installed Ultimate on another system and it does not show SP1 in the Control Panel>System display. Windows Update does not offer SP1 as an update for this system. Windows Update did do a whole bunch of updates that took several reboots etc. after the initial installation. How do I know if SP1 has been applied? WinBubbles shows Build 6000? I downloaded a copy of SP1 somewhere along the way just in case I needed it and am tempted to run it on the Ultimate system but I would like MSFT to handle the job through Window Update just to make sure I get the right stuff.

I have automatic updates active (installation at night), but have not seen SP1 listed as an update on my computer or on "Windows Update". Is the service pack only for non-ultimate versions at this time? Or is there something I have to do? Or is Microsoft rolling out this a chunk at a time?

When I installed my computer I found the standard Windows firewall in Vista premium. I trusted this and did not want to slow down the system by adding an other firewall. Besides, this policy also was discouraged by the helpfiles that came with the system. Virusprotection was not done by the system, so advisable to install a virusprotection tool. I read a lot on the net on that item and finally installed Avast antivirus.
So far so good. Had no troubles from oktober 07 till a week ago. Than I decided to destall Avast and to install One Live one care. The critics did not take me to this. But I think it is a good policy to have the safety issues in the same hand as the system resources are. I take another step and expect the safety cause covered in the system itself. Sell a new car without safety features! I installed the One care, I did want to give it my support, I did not expect it to be bad at all................
