Incapable User: Toolbar Hangs And Hides Up On The Desktop
Jul 29, 2009
I just reinstalled windows vista home today and at first many things werent working such as my wireless and my 3d flip...so i searched on htfc and found out i needed the drivers from the computer maker. Now after downloading and rebooting, the aero scheme is working which is great. but the only thing i cant seem to figure out is that toolbar that hangs and hides up on the desktop, i dont know what its called, i cant see it, i cant find it. before today i just put my mouse up to the top of the screen and i could get quick access to whatever i had put up there. firstly whats it called and how do i get it back?
I don't find the desktop to be of much use, too many icons take away from the image I choose to display, but I do use the desktop toolbar from the taskbar quite a bit. There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won’t leave the toolbar, and I can’t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either.
Is there any way to build a toolbar on the desktop like we used to have in 2002? I really need this. I have a ton of shortcuts that I use all the time. They were very handy in the sidebar. I can't believe MS has not put this back in because I see a lot of people asking for this.
I am having an app crash issue as of late that I am sure is probably posted somewhere else on this forum but I have not been able to locate the solution to my issue.
Here is what I am seeing: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: AppHangB1 Application Name: Explorer.EXE Application Version: 6.0.6002.18005 Application Timestamp: 49e02a1e Hang Signature: e4cb...........
I lost the taskbar at top of desktop that quicklinks with icons, etc .... this is not the bottom task bar, system tray and quicklinks to the left. New to Vista,
Vista evidently has serious USB issues on many computers (including my own). What concerns me most is that these problems have plagued Vista since launch and Microsoft still have not fixed them. Googling around to try to find solutions to my own problems, I come across people with BRAND NEW computers who are struggling with failing USB ports. So these problems are persisting nearly a year since Vista public release, and many years since the beta release. I am therefore left wondering if Microsoft have completely no idea what the problem is and are completely unable to resolve the problem?
i am an average user. i have vista home premium, and want to find my 1) user icon pictures, and 2) my desktop background pictures. in XP they were under documents & settings. I can't find them in vista. i realize that this is ridiculous, but i like my pictures to come up as if they were part of the original os. once i find out where they go, i will crop etc., then place my pictures in the correct folder.
How do I create a new toolbar? How do I edit the Toolbar Command Buttons (Icons?)? How do I create and add an Autocorrect (AC) Command Button to an Excel Toolbar? I HATE the ribbons, period? I LOVED the nice, neat, useful, and tiny toolbars I created and edited in the 2003 programs and this 'RIBBON' thing is the most obnoxious thing ever! I REALLY fell bad for those laptop dudes and dudettes, especially the 15" (or smaller) screens. I have a nice, new, big 19" and I find the useless and extravagant space requirements for the "Ribbon" (who came up with that one, anyway?) EXTREMELY ANNOYING..............
Windows Platform: 32xVista, Comp: HP 6700 ; To start off, I was an idiot and was installing some program a friend had given to me and it required "New SID" from Microsoft and I did brief (obviously too brief) research on Microsoft's site and I went to install it. It sat there for literally an hour and I thought the process had froze but did not know what to do so I ended up ending the task from the task manager... and when I restarted....boom! Everything changed and disappeared...
So on my desktop everything with the appearance changed and I am shocked to discover that I no longer have Administrator access, my useraccount *User* has only guest privileges (and I went online and spent hours today doing a search with people with similar problems) and went through Safemode....went through other procedures to try to access my account but I'm unable to! The weirdest thing is that I am able to log on to the "Administrator" account when I am in safe mode but, and a big but.....my Admin account in safe mode is also under Guest status and I can't do anything to stop it
Two nights ago when i started my computer up and typed in my password instead of the screen just putting up 'Welcome', it changed to 'Preparing Your Desktop'. After this it took about 3 minutes for my desktop to load, which is almost double the amount of time. When the desktop finally opens, a bubble pops up telling me that my user profile was not correctly loaded, and a temporary one has been loaded in its place.
At first i thought it might have just become corrupt and i could start a new profile. But none of the changes stick to this temporary file or any new user name i create. Frustrating that i have to upload my itunes library everytime i want to listen to music. So i had a friend of mine try to help me, and he had me checking a file HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList Under here i tried to ensure that the key name did not end in .bad (but it does end in .bak), The ref count was at 1 which i changed to 0, and the state count was already at 0. None of this did anything... and really i don't know enough about computers to really comprehend what he has me doing here.
I noticed my Documents folder has been renamed Desktop. It shows up as Desktop on the start menu. When I open my user file, Desktop shows up twice. One is empty and the other has my stuff in it. I can not rename it back to Documents.
I have a Dell Inspiron loaded with vista home premium which came with a very convenient top toolbar. My hard drive crashed so it was recently replace and windows was reinstalled. How do I get the toolbar back?
It had shortcuts to word processors, calculator, pictures, music movies, etc..
The toolbar that is displayed on the startup screen with the default location on the top center of the display - not sure its technical name - mine is gone and I miss it:sa: How do I get it to display again?
With IE 8 and Google Toolbar. I installed IE 8 for Vista 64 Bit. When I installed the Google Toolbar, it showed up at the installment, but then when I relaunched IE 8 Google toolbar was not there. It also was not in the "Add Ons". But was in my Programs. I uninstalled and reinstalled two more times and it will not show up in IE 8. I had MSN as my home page , so I had to change the home page to Google in order to have my mail. I have gmail. So what is wrong here?
I have had my new Dell Studio XPS for less than a week. I love it, it is tons faster than my previous computer with a WEI of 5.9. However, today I was wasting time playing Sid Meiers Railroads and the game crashed. After the crash the bar at the top of my computer screen was missing. It was like this tool/task bar(this one isn't specifically mine): It has Categories and the recycle bin in it. Can someone explain how I can get the toolbar back. I tried the only system restore point I had on my computer, but that didn't work.
I have a custom toolbar in my Taskbar that points to a folder on my local system. I do not want the icons to appears to the right of the toolbar name instead I want a drop down list to appear.
I can do a ctrl+alt+delete and bring up the task manager and kill the process BUT my desktop has lost the task bar and starting orb. Moving the mouse top or bottom or to either side does not 'unhide' the toolbar so that I can access my USB drive with rkill.com (a process to kill this malware) on it. Have tried booting into Safe Mode and the viral program appears there also, but once again cannot access the Start Orb or Task bar. I have no knowledge of any 'DOS' commands should I be able to go to safe mode with cmd prompt. Using Vista Home Premium.
Some wonderful site recently visited (don't know which one) has added a nuisance toolbar just above the default one in my Vista Windows Mail. It inserted just under the File, Edit, View, Insert, etc bar and above the toolbar which includes Send, cut, copy, past, etc bar. how to eliminate this nuisance? Right clicking does not gime me any options.
[This is my second post on the same subject. The first thread died] I had this Vista Home Basic machine working okay, but the power went out and then another person who was high used the machine. They named a new user as administrator. I don't know what else they did.
Now I have a new user as administrator and the previous users are gone. I still see evidence of them in the file tree but the old programs are gone and the documents are buried in C > Users > Admin (that was a name of a previous user that I had named when I first got the machine) I've gradually installed some of my old programs and I'm currently just rebuilding everything, but it would be a lot easier if I could revert to the old user system. The Control Panel > add or remove user accounts is useless. I only have two icons there So is there anyway to return to the original condition? How can I recover the missing users?
I was just learning how to boot in a safe mode and now, the taskbar and the toolbar are transparent. Also, the background of every site is white. How do I set everything back to normal.
I have added a directory to the toolbar as you can see from image one. Now i can re-organise them such as in image 2, but as soon as i restart, the files sort to alphabetical. I've been using Vista since the public beta's and not experienced the problem until i just reinstalled last week.

It's not a huge problem, but i found it very annoying when i am working and need to bring up something quickly while the screen is filled with 100 windows.
When I first got my new Sony Vaio model VGN-NS30E, I installed Comodo Security Suite. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I wasn't happy with it and tried to uninstall it. I now run AVG free edition, and Windows firewall. I also now use Firefox browser, and am happy with my set up. I don't really like internet explorer, so don't use it. When I installed Comodo, the HopSurf Toolbar was bundled with it. I did my homework after the event, and found, ( online ) issues with HopSurf
Comodo removed Ask/IAC SafeSurf Toolbar by replacing it with HopSurf/IAC/Ask Toolbar - Donna's SecurityFlash. I have uninstalled Comodo/HopSurf, and when do a search cannot find it, but when I open ie, I get this...........
i have been unable to look at certain aspects of my toolbar. everytime i pass over my clock, battery meter or network status bar and try to preview them, windows explorer shuts down and has to restart. ive run numerous system restores and they all have failed, as well as security sweeps and nothing seems to be able to find the problem.
I'm trying to rid Myself of mirar toolbar, and the pop up ads it keeps supplying me with.I also think it's slowing My computer down. I've tried googleing a solution but all refer to downloading a removal tool,(and paying for it,not sure about that) or using the add remove program option in control panel(which is not an option on vista). I'm at a loss,
Well it seems very simple but I kind stuck on this, so I need help to have my colors and appearnace back in Windows Vista Premium. For some reason the colors of the menu and the taskbar did change. To make it easy look at the attached screen shot of this.
I have had Vista about month now and I keep getting suggested sites poping up along my toolbar its driving me nuts! These sites are in some relation to what i'm viewing, wasnt there before so must be something i've pressed. Its nothing todo with my popups as there turned off.
For toolbars started in the Vista taskbar, how do you remove the Title? The option doesn't seem to exist any longer.
i.e. under older windows you could:
If you add one or two toolbars to your Windows taskbar, regain some space. Right-click on your created taskbar and on the popup menu that appears, uncheck "Show Title." This removes the title description for your taskbar. If you know the programs on the taskbar by their icon and don't need to see the names of the programs, uncheck "Show Text" as well.
Does this no longer exist in Vista and that I can no longer reclaim the space?
On my desk window my lower toolbar is no longer accesable. The on with the clock, network e.d. in. Also the quick launch icons the minimized windows are no longer clickable. If I click on it I recieve the error sound. Only the windows main icon works on the lower left side. It is very irritating to need to open a window that is minimized via the taskmanager to activate the window. What's wrong with my toolbar and how can I restore it?
I have a question about the toolbar though. With previous versions of windows I could fill up the toolbar with open windows and just click on the one I wanted. Now in Vista it will only show me 2 open windows at a time in the tool bar. If I have 3 or more open I have to click on the up or down arrow to find them and then click on them. Is there any way to have more than 2 windows show on the toolbar. This would be for separate applications so the grouping option won't help me here.
