recently my computer crashed, and the next time i booted up, every file, folder, icon and shortcut now has a small tick box (check box) in the upper left corner. it doesn't make a lot of difference, however it is annoying and i dont know how to change it. also, when i click on the start menu, the are that usually shows all my recently used programmes is now a white blank box. whats happened? how do i fix this?
View 4 RepliesNormally you can set only wmv and mpg video files as desktop background using DreamScene. You can howewer use ANY video file as a background it the following way:
1.download and install K-Lite Mega Codec Pack or a codec pack equivalent. The first benefit will be tat you can play back practically any kind of video file with your WMP11.
2. Rename the fi,e you want to use as desktop background .wmv or .mpg (To do this you have to uncheck "hide extensions of known file types" in your Fokder Options Menu)
3-Once you have changed the file extension, you'll find "Set as desktop background" in its context(right-click) menu.Set your background and enjoy! Use avi, mov, mkv or just any kind of file!
I downloaded some pictures from digital camera this morning and saved them on my desktop as I always do. Viewed the pictures & all was ok. Just gone to view the pics again and says the following: The drive or network connection that the shortcut (then the image number) - Shortcut.Ink refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disc is properly inserted or the network resource is available and then try again. I have no idea what this means but deleted the pictures of the camera as I viewed them and they were fine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe computer had been infected by some malicious software and it did not boot at all. After some tinkering I managed to get into safe mode and run MBAM. The computer eventually booted, but had no desktop. I went into the Task manager and saw that there was no Explorer process, so I started it and al was well. I then booted from the OS disc included with the PC, got into the repair screen that had sustem restore and restored the PC to a date before it got infected. This worked well and now the PC boot into Vista without any problems. I ran an antivirus and MBAM and neither detected any malware.
I thought all was well until I tried to connect to the Internet. I have cable service, a modem connected to a router and the PCs connected to the router. The Vista installation would not see anything out there, I tinkered and managed to get a message that said that there was "limited connectivity available". I figured that the LAN card's driver had been corrupted so I downloaded the driver and installed it. The installation was successful, but the problem persisted. I then went into Dev. manager and went into the card's properties. The status comment indicated that the device was working correctly. I noticed that there was another LAN device under the Network. It was the MS 6to 4 Adapter and there was anexclamation point next to it. I went into its properties and the remark indicated code 31.
I try to install windows vista 64 but after I booted from cd the system said cpu is not compatible 64 ( I am using windows xp 2002) what should I do?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi have been using winxp 64bit for the last 2 days . now today i booted into vista home prem 64bit and some of my drives are missing. dvd and 1 of my harddrives.i can see them when booting up the system and i can boot to the missing drive that has winxp 64bit installed on it but vista can't find them. also i tryed going into the disk management but it just sets there and will no longer list my drives. also my web brower will not work .. it just loads the page and then hangs there.if i try clicking on anything the page just starts to fade white and nothing happens. i have a copy of my Favorites on a flash drive and i can open the browser with one of them and it works fine. then if i close the browser and open it in the start menu again it works. i'm using avast antivirus and windows Defender and there both telling me the system is fine.

The laptop never gets to the log on page, it just restarts. I can get in on safe mode. I have deleted the drivers and reinstalled them System restore hasnt worked to top it all of for some reason i cant open my c: drive but i can open the contents in side, but i cant change any settings.

I love Ubuntu! But, I must say using Vista 64 now for about a month I actually *like it*. There are a bit of things Mac OS could stea.. err borrow. Like Readyboost. I found a 2 pack of PNY 4 gig drives on sale for $25 at staples a few weeks ago, so I snagged them to use for readyboost. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard in my home theater system. I just upgraded the CPU (to X4) & BIOS (to 2302). My initial problem after the upgrade was the BSOD in 32-bit Vista blaming the file "amdlld.sys." I booted into safe mode and renamed the amdlld.sys file. Now the machine boots up fine with no BSOD. My question is: is there any Microsoft Vista 32bit system files needed for the new X4 that I need to install? (the AMD website only shows processor drivers for Windows XP and Server 2003. . .but nothing for Vista) The reason I ask: while my system appears to be working fine. . .the Winrar benchmarks do not reflect the scores of a typical AMD quad core CPU (about 1350). Instead, I am getting around 350. Something is missing here. But what?

View 9 Replies View RelatedHave XP on larger partition, then installed Vista on too small partition (single hard drive), able to dual boot. Kept getting Low Disk Space error message in Vista. From Computer Management, Storage (in Vista) wanted to extend the Vista partition by creating a third partition from the XP partition, thought I could extend the Vista partition but couldn't. Then decided to put the unallocated partition back in XP partition (same session). When I re-booted got "Missing MBR" error message. Able to get Vista to boot again from off the install CD. But no more dual boot possible. AM able to see XP partition in Vista. How can I get back to being able to have the dual boot option?
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn my x64 box, TFS power tools was conflicting with Office Communicator. So I blocked Office Communictor from the startup sequence. As I expected, at startup I would get a message "Blocked startup programs" with the option to "run blocked program" if I want to launch Office Communicator explicitly. Good.
Then I uninstalled TFS power tools, and decided to unblock Office Communicator, so it can run at startup again. Unfortunately, the Office Communicator app shows as "Permitted," but is still being blocked at startup.
In other words, I can't unblock Office Communicator. Vista says it is "permitted", but it is not permitted at startup. I tried disabling and re-enabling it, to see if it would clear up, but no good.
How do I force it to be unblocked so that it will run at startup?
I detest those shortcut arrows that get put on all the desktop icons. I used Tweak UI in XP to get rid of them but can't find anything that works in Vista. I tried Frameworkx that did absolutely nothing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery time I create a shortcut, usually by right-clicking on an executable and then choosing Create Shortcut from the context menu, the default path is always set to, for example, C:Program Files (x86)My Applicationmyapplication.exe. However, I already set my default Program Files and Program Files (x86) location to be in the D: drive. Nature of the Problem After installing Vista Ultimate x64, I installed TuneUp Utilities 2009 and from there, I set the default Program Files location to my second partition which is D:. I expected TuneUp Utilities to make the necessary changes to the registry. To make sure that no programs were left out in C:Program Files and C:Program Files (x86), I manually re-created the 2 folders in D: and then copied all the files and folders inside. I rebooted afterwards. Upon boot, my expectations toward TuneUp Utilities 2009 seemed to be correct because the default now points to D: (whenever I install 64-bit or 32-bit programs). I had no problems running the applications as well.
But a problem arises whenever a shortcut is made. It doesn't matter whether it was created by the installer itself or created manually. The target path always points to C: while the Start In path points to the correct one, which is D:. Whether it be in the Start Menu, on the Desktop, or in the Quick Launch menu, the same behavior happens. It's often a pain to edit the shortcuts manually- doing a right-click > Properties > change C to D > Change Icon > Apply > OK every time I install a new application or decide to create a shortcut for a certain portable app. I believe there's a registry entry that I can change so that the default Shortcut path now defaults to D: instead of C:.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSince installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
I am having a problem deleting shortcut files as when i attempt to delete them it says that it could not find this item, they are also unable to be dragged into the recycle bin, nor are they able to be moved anywhere else. when i right click on them it says on the security tab after properties that it is unavailable or cant be displayed. This isnt happening with all the shortcuts but it is wasting space

After creating a shortcut to the link, I attempt to click it. For a few brief seconds, a CMD prompt screen comes up and says something about the file wasn't found. I checked your article to see if I could find a mistake. There wasn't one. I even created a new task using your tutorial, and still it doesn't work. I am wonder if this is a fix with SP1 (I have SP1 by the way)? Is there another alternative?

So, I put an entry in the registry to hide them. BUT this didnt fix the hanging (thats how I found out having the computer off (the one I added under sendto as a shortcut, causes it). So, how would you fix this, without removuing the shortcut to the networked computer?
