Shortcut For Switching Accts?

Dec 24, 2008

Because of an ongoing problem (SQL error prevents my posting to Thunderbird Forums) with one of my regular Vista accts, I ahve to use another acct to post to TB. I have to switch back and forth between the two accts whenever I access TB forums. So, is there any shortcut that I can use instead of having to go to Start>switch accts, logoff, etc menu?

Shortcut Shortcut.Ink Refers To Is Unavailable, Viewed The Pictures Again

Aug 16, 2009

I downloaded some pictures from digital camera this morning and saved them on my desktop as I always do. Viewed the pictures & all was ok. Just gone to view the pics again and says the following: The drive or network connection that the shortcut (then the image number) - Shortcut.Ink refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disc is properly inserted or the network resource is available and then try again. I have no idea what this means but deleted the pictures of the camera as I viewed them and they were fine.

Held Off Switching IE8

Aug 31, 2009

I have held off switching to IE8 as I always understood it was better to let some of the kinks be sorted out first before going to something newer from Microsoft. Currently I use IE7 and Vista and am fairly happy with it despite the occasional blips. Should I change or leave alone? If I do change should I upgrade or completely clear out IE7 and if I don't care for the results can I switch back again?

Fast User Switching

Aug 7, 2008

Is there a way to get rid of the screen that comes up when I type Win/L? That's the one with the current user avatar and a Switch User button, it seems to serve no useful purpose, wasn't there on XP. Is there some way of making the User Account avatars more like those on XP? I have week eyesight and I can't discern which avatar has focus when I use arrow keys, so I have to use the mouse. On XP it was much more obvious which UA had focus. Is there some way to show the mail and process counts?

Switching Between Wireless Locations

Jun 23, 2008

I have a home wireless network that automatically assigns the IP address and info to my new laptop (Vista). At work, I'm required to manually enter the IP address and subsequent info to get WiFi. Is there a way in Vista to set up two different "profiles" or "locations" that I can easily toggle between to change my IP settings, so I don't have to go into the Network Connections and change them every time I switch between the two places? If Vista cannot do this, is there a program I can purchase/download that will do it for me?

Reboot In Would Not Load After Switching It Off

Apr 30, 2008

Vista 64 killed my Corel PaintShopPro Photo X2. I installed it and then Vista did some security updates and PSP8 ; PSP9 and PSP Photo X2 no longer run. I did load and tried Photo X2 uninstalled it then PSP 9; unstalled it then PSP 8 then uninstalled it. Up to Sunday 20th it worked OK. bUt I uninstalled it formatted the hard drive and started again and it has not run since.

First time it ran when I put it in then came on the reboot in would not load after switching it off for a while then switching it on again to then hung up the PC. The only way to get Vista to run was to use the Vista installation disc and that wiped PSP off the hard drive. I have repeated this 5 times, each time with a clean formatted disc with the same results. It is an automatic microsoft update (I think it said security update).

Display Setting Randomly Switching

Mar 18, 2010

My desktop PC was hooked up to my TV and would randomly switch to using the TV as the main monitor often disabling my monitor. I thought it was my NVIDIA card so I upgraded to a newer ATI card. The new card has 2 monitor outputs and a S-video output. The problem no appears to only happen overnight. The next morning my PC is still on and awake but the display is changed to a lower setting. I have to enable a second monitor, which i do not have, before it will allow me to fix the resolution of the monitor I do have.

Right now I have a bigger problem where it looks like it switched the TV to being the main monitor and I no longer have a TV hooked up (Its mounted on another floor of my house) so I cannot get to the screen to fix the problem. I tried plugging the monitor into the other port (sometimes it just switches ports) but that is not the problem.

SP1 Breaks Switching Users Ability

Mar 18, 2008

Before SP1, I use to be able to switch between users with no problems, now with SP1, the second user will never load right. It dosent matter which user logs in first, the second one will always be messed up and the only way to fix it is to restart. Logging off dosent fix it, the second user never works right unless you restart. This is a very bad thing for me, I need to be able to switch users on the fly.

This also happens with firefox, and i presume other applications, though i have yet to try this. This is a recent development, everything worked fine until a few days ago when i deleted some old programmes i dont use, games and suchlike. I'm pretty much certain i didn't delete anything vital, though i guess its a possibility.

Network Keeps Switching Between Private And Public

Jan 24, 2010

my network connection keeps switching between public and private, despite my configuring it to a private network. Because of this, my PS3 is unable to connect (using laptop as media center to stream data to PS3). We are using a DLINK DIR-615 at the moment. I also have Linksys WRT54GS that I could switch back to, but I had problems with my laptop staying connected with that and we had the Dlink kicking around, so we swapped to see if my laptop would stay connected with it, and so far it has. Or atleast when it switches to "local only", it reconnects right away. I'm trying to stream movies and music to my PS3. But whenever it flips to "public", I can no long stream the files. can stay I it to set as a private network?

I mean using new Window Mail in laptop but still store the mail in an external hard disk, then connect the external hard disk back to desktop in office.

Pls help and shed me light on how to do the new switching and procedure and setting.

Mail Password Prompt When Switching Users

Mar 23, 2008

My wife and I have different email ids with the same ISP and I have setup a shared Store Folder that we both use. Vista Mail is setup in each of our Accounts so that when I "send and receive" I get her emails as well as mine. The same happens from her own User Account.

The problem that we now have, which did not occur on Windows XP and Outlook, is that whenever we "Switch User" and start up Mail we are prompted by Windows Security to enter the User Name and Password for each email account even though "Remember my credentials" is checked.

I have tried all of the "fixes" I can find including deleting c:/Users/Username/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Protect and not using the "Apply" button when creating the Mail Accounts (See "Microsoft mail does not retain username and password" in this Newsgroup).

Blank Screen Switching Users/logging In

May 15, 2010

I have windows vista home premium x64, its a fairly new computer - not even one year old. it has 12gb of RAM, and the i7 core processor - i dont think its much useful to my problem, but here it is: Logging off/Switching users takes forever, sometimes the screen just goes blank and stays there. When it does work, i cannot login again properly - Only my desktop backround is shown (No sidebar, no desktop icons, no start menu etc) The computer will not fully come out of sleep mode (Sleep mode isnt even set to on, yet screen shuts down anyway)again only background is shown when i try to wake it up Ctrl+Alt+Del in this state brings up a blank screen yet again, but i know that the menu is there (Sounds) Of course there are other problems, but i dont think they are related (USB ports stop working)If ANYONE has a similiar problem or knows how to resolve myissue,

i have this new HPnotebook with a core2 3Gram, ATI 512..When i play games, switch user, my taskbar enlarges and shrinks respectively.. look at the image.. does the resolution of my PC have to do with this? or vista is at fault? or HP is at fault? or me? what to do, HP customer care dont know what they are doing.. Also, they didn't review my specs before sending new solutions.. Giving drivers not compatible for my notebook. I dont know what to do, after i play a game, whether its an officially licensed game or a cracked game. And when i change user, it shrinks.. look at the image..

#1, normal size of taskbar..
#2, size after switching users..
#3, size after playing games..

let if HP is at fault, let this be warning to everyone.. I bought this notebook because i love gaming, but gaming is one of the problem that arises in this model and brand..

Shortcut Arrows

Jul 30, 2009

On my x64 box, TFS power tools was conflicting with Office Communicator. So I blocked Office Communictor from the startup sequence. As I expected, at startup I would get a message "Blocked startup programs" with the option to "run blocked program" if I want to launch Office Communicator explicitly. Good.

Then I uninstalled TFS power tools, and decided to unblock Office Communicator, so it can run at startup again. Unfortunately, the Office Communicator app shows as "Permitted," but is still being blocked at startup.

In other words, I can't unblock Office Communicator. Vista says it is "permitted", but it is not permitted at startup. I tried disabling and re-enabling it, to see if it would clear up, but no good.

How do I force it to be unblocked so that it will run at startup?

How To Change A Shortcut

Dec 17, 2008

Every time I create a shortcut, usually by right-clicking on an executable and then choosing Create Shortcut from the context menu, the default path is always set to, for example, C:Program Files (x86)My Applicationmyapplication.exe. However, I already set my default Program Files and Program Files (x86) location to be in the D: drive. Nature of the Problem After installing Vista Ultimate x64, I installed TuneUp Utilities 2009 and from there, I set the default Program Files location to my second partition which is D:. I expected TuneUp Utilities to make the necessary changes to the registry. To make sure that no programs were left out in C:Program Files and C:Program Files (x86), I manually re-created the 2 folders in D: and then copied all the files and folders inside. I rebooted afterwards. Upon boot, my expectations toward TuneUp Utilities 2009 seemed to be correct because the default now points to D: (whenever I install 64-bit or 32-bit programs). I had no problems running the applications as well.

But a problem arises whenever a shortcut is made. It doesn't matter whether it was created by the installer itself or created manually. The target path always points to C: while the Start In path points to the correct one, which is D:. Whether it be in the Start Menu, on the Desktop, or in the Quick Launch menu, the same behavior happens. It's often a pain to edit the shortcuts manually- doing a right-click > Properties > change C to D > Change Icon > Apply > OK every time I install a new application or decide to create a shortcut for a certain portable app. I believe there's a registry entry that I can change so that the default Shortcut path now defaults to D: instead of C:.
