Dual Boot XP And Re-booted Got "Missing MBR" Error Message

Apr 19, 2008

Have XP on larger partition, then installed Vista on too small partition (single hard drive), able to dual boot. Kept getting Low Disk Space error message in Vista. From Computer Management, Storage (in Vista) wanted to extend the Vista partition by creating a third partition from the XP partition, thought I could extend the Vista partition but couldn't. Then decided to put the unallocated partition back in XP partition (same session). When I re-booted got "Missing MBR" error message. Able to get Vista to boot again from off the install CD. But no more dual boot possible. AM able to see XP partition in Vista. How can I get back to being able to have the dual boot option?

Dual Boot: Vista And Vista On 2 Hard Drives?

There are many articles on how to dual boot Vista and XP, but I want to dual boot Vista and Vista, with an existing installation, on 2 Hard Drives. Currently I switch these in the BIOS, but I'd much rather chose at a later stage, can this be done? Why? Because I keep one of the drives for random software that I rarely use.

Vista 64 & Vista 32 Dual Boot Issue

Mar 26, 2008

I had an Vista 32 bit version installed and which was used fine.

3 days before I had upgrade my PC's memory to 4G, then I find Vista 32 Bit version can not recognize all the memory. So I try to install an Vista 64 Bit version for the test to check if the 64 bit system is ok for me.

The problem is, Vista 32 was installed on to the 3rd partition of the harddisk, usually the drive letter will be E in Windows XP and previous version windows, although it in Vista it display as C drive. I tried to install the 64 Bit Vista in to the 4th partiton. After all the drivers and applications install completed, that seems so far so good. Then I find my previous F drive now names C. The Drive C in Vista 32 Bit names E now. When
I try to boot into Vista 32, the error message : winload.exe could not find.

I used bcdedit try to redirect the device and osdevice to E drive, Vista 32 still could not start normally, the system will hang up in the blue desktop background, seems can not load user profile or sth like that.

I have check the E drive, all the files of Vista 32 are still there.Anyone have any good idea about fix the Vista 32 bit boot and keep the Vista 64 bit also?

Computer Booted, But No Desktop

Oct 30, 2009

The computer had been infected by some malicious software and it did not boot at all. After some tinkering I managed to get into safe mode and run MBAM. The computer eventually booted, but had no desktop. I went into the Task manager and saw that there was no Explorer process, so I started it and al was well. I then booted from the OS disc included with the PC, got into the repair screen that had sustem restore and restored the PC to a date before it got infected. This worked well and now the PC boot into Vista without any problems. I ran an antivirus and MBAM and neither detected any malware.

I thought all was well until I tried to connect to the Internet. I have cable service, a modem connected to a router and the PCs connected to the router. The Vista installation would not see anything out there, I tinkered and managed to get a message that said that there was "limited connectivity available". I figured that the LAN card's driver had been corrupted so I downloaded the driver and installed it. The installation was successful, but the problem persisted. I then went into Dev. manager and went into the card's properties. The status comment indicated that the device was working correctly. I noticed that there was another LAN device under the Network. It was the MS 6to 4 Adapter and there was anexclamation point next to it. I went into its properties and the remark indicated code 31.

Haven't Booted Into Ubuntu One Single Time

Jul 26, 2008

I do not like XP. With a passion. It blows, along with all the people clinging to it's rotting carcass. May they all die horrid putrid rotting deaths. Okay not really but you get that I don't care much for XP, right?. I've always used linux as long as I remember too (****e I've used everything over the years - Atari, Amiga, Commodore..), and I actually abandoned XP for Ubuntu, save for playing games. I love Ubuntu! But, I must say using Vista 64 now for about a month I actually *like it*. There are a bit of things Mac OS could stea.. err borrow. Like Readyboost. I found a 2 pack of PNY 4 gig drives on sale for $25 at staples a few weeks ago, so I snagged them to use for readyboost. It's fantastic, Firefox is loaded and displaying the home page before I even release the damn mouse button. ..................

Dual Boot Of Vista X64 And X86 On Same Drive

Mar 8, 2009

I've configured my system to dual boot into Vista64 (OEM) and Vista86 (retail) on the same drive - 2 separate partitions in a raid 0 configuration.

Vista64 partition: is used exclusively for music recording with 64 bit software only - yes they do exist, I use Sonar.

Vista 86 partition: is for general computer use: Internet, email and such.

I understand that vista64 runs both 64 and 32 bit applications well enuf, I simply want to keep both uses apart from one another - thus my reason for a dual boot.

... so here's my question :^) Has anyone done this before, on a raid 0 using two instances of Vista? If so, could you tell me how well it's worked for you?

...also, concerning the "pagefile.sys". Since I have both vista's on the same drive in separate partitions and vista doesn't like running two pagefiles on the same drive. Should I move one to a second drive? If so, which should I move the x64 or the x86. Maybe both, eh?

XP/ Dual Boot, Sees Vista As In E:

Sep 4, 2008

I've scoured the related threads on such dual boot issues in this forum, and my actual situation appears not to be exactly addressed. I have a dual boot system, with XP in the primary partition (50GB), and with Vista in the first logical partition (150GB). XP sees itself naturally as being in C:, and sees Vista as in E: (absurdly seeing the CD/DVD drive as D:), whereas Vista sees itself as C: and XP being in D:.

What I want to do at the moment is NOT ONLY to enable myself to boot straight into Vista, and NOT ONLY to clear out XP, but also to move my Vista installation to the physical position where XP is at the moment, so that it is on the outside of the disk and would have better disk performance - the same reason that good HD defragmenters put the most-used files on the outside of disk or at least of the respective partition.............

Dual Boot With XP Pro And VISTA Ultimate

Jul 8, 2008

- I've already have XP Pro installed on my Dell Laptop
- Created a 15G partition on the same HDD using Partition Magic
- Went to BIOS and changed the Boot sequence to Boot From CD
- Inserted my Vista CD
- Vista started loading the files.........
- Entered the Product Key
- On the next screen, where you choose where to install vista, I have C, E, and F partitons and I can select each of them, but the "NEXT" is grayed out. I wanted to install the Vista on my F partion (all are NTFS) but the "Next" is grayed out and on the bottom left hand side there is a message saying" windows can not install the OS on this partion".
-Tried to delete the partion, format the partions, but getting the same message.
- 5 months ago I successfully was able to install the VISTA on this laptop, dualbooted with XP. But not anymore.
- My Admin formated my laptop 3 months ago as I moved to a different group within my organization and there wasn't a need to use VISTA. But now, I want to use both XP and VISTA again.

Fixing Dual Boot Vista 64 And Xp

Aug 19, 2009

Background info: vista installed on drive 1 xp installed on drive 2 dual booted just fine. A week ago my main drive stopped working - a manufacturer fault. I lost everything on the drive. I replaced the main drive 1, installed vista 64 again. Drive 2 was unaffected. I would like to dual boot so that I can run xp again, but don't know exactly how to set that up again. XP is already (I assume) on drive 2. There is no boot.ini on Drive 1 now. I know there are tutorials on how to set up dual booting, but I don't want to re-install xp if it's not necessary. The files on drive 2 are there and unaffected.

Booted Safe Mode Renamed The Amdlld.sys File

Jun 17, 2009

I have an Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard in my home theater system. I just upgraded the CPU (to X4) & BIOS (to 2302). My initial problem after the upgrade was the BSOD in 32-bit Vista blaming the file "amdlld.sys." I booted into safe mode and renamed the amdlld.sys file. Now the machine boots up fine with no BSOD. My question is: is there any Microsoft Vista 32bit system files needed for the new X4 that I need to install? (the AMD website only shows processor drivers for Windows XP and Server 2003. . .but nothing for Vista) The reason I ask: while my system appears to be working fine. . .the Winrar benchmarks do not reflect the scores of a typical AMD quad core CPU (about 1350). Instead, I am getting around 350. Something is missing here. But what?

Vista Showed Up Bios Aren't Dual

Feb 1, 2008

Well, I just got 4gb of RAM (4x1gb) from Silicon Assets. Coming from 1gb (512mbx2), which was high density. The new stuff is low latency (4-4-4-12), and low density, and double sided. Well, I installed them in Vista Ultimate x64, and only 2814 show up. I go in the BIOS, and everything shows as 4gb, the PCI-E is limited to 512mb (because thats how much it takes iteself), and everything was set. Well, in CPU-Z it also tells me I have 4gb of RAM. When I used the MEM-TEST LiveCD, it said I had 2815 again, same as Vista. I removed all the RAM and tested them one by one, and all showed up in the Bios correctly. I then put in 3 sticks so they aren't in dual and that only 3gb is there, and the same: 2815 even after scanning and everything. I am completely lost on what to do.......
