AVI files are showing as sound and no picture. Under filters I only have the AVI decompresser one, no other filters. I have tried downloading the codecs for them but still no luck. If these are supposed to appear under filters they don't.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I booted my Vista Business laptop this morning the wallpaper had gone black. I used to use a pic from my Pictures folder as my background. Now I can no longer access picture files or thumbnails through the Desktop Background applet in Control Panel. When I try to browse to the Pictures folder it appears empty. When I mouse over the contents, I get blank transparent boxes with the picture names, instead of thumbnails. If I try to use a Windows background picture, the thumbnails there are pixellated generic icons. The only background I can set is Solid Colour. I can change colours but that's it. There's no error message when I try to change my wallpaper. My user account is an Administrator (both domain and local) and I don't use screen savers. I've already tried the following suggestions from this board (rebooted after each step):
- Checked Group Policy settings, made sure all items under User ConfigurationAdmin. templatesDesktopDesktop are set to "not configured"
- Checked Ease of Use settings, backgrounds are NOT disabled
- Downloaded and "merged" the "wallpaper enable" reg file from Winhelp
- Downloaded/ran KB Hotfix 934008
- Tried steps in Vista Tutorial on disabling/enabling desktop changes, including other links to reg hacks (none of which worked).
is there any registry setting to fix the display of picture files (bmp, jpg...) in windows explorer (thumbnail view). I just installed vista and ACDSee (a few days ago) and just today noticed that picture files in thumbnail view have the ACDSee icon. can anyone send me the default (vista) settings for .

My "Program Files (x86)" folder is not showing up in my C drive list, it is still there, but not appearing any ideas? I think other folders are not showing as well..

Recently a CD with very important files on it developed a fault, which resulted in the CD showing empty. The whole idea of saving files is that if my computer crashes (as it did, so that I had to reinstall Windows loosing all my data) I will still have all my files on the CDs, but if these fail as well how else can I save the Files?

I can't seem to get it to return to default. I've done the folder options with no avail. I have some knowledge of computers. If you tell me what needs to be done I can navigate my way through and get it done. My machine is HP G60-237NR Notebook running Vista Home Premium 32bit.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of transferring some old analogue VHS tapes to my pc running Vista with a view to re-editing them in "Windows Movie Maker". I am using a "One Touch Video Grabber" to do this. As I want to keep the quality as high as possible I have selected "DVD" from the list of formats available with this device. The files arrive OK into the chosen folder and appear as MPEG with the icon showing balloons with MPEG written in the centre.
So far so good. These files will play OK in "Windows Media Player" but are impossible to import into Movie Maker which displays a message to this effect.This makes things a bit difficult. Vista normally shows avi/mpg/ etc files as a thumbnail frame of the film in question with the icon of the program that opens them in the bottom right hand corner.( eg a little yellow arrow in the case of Media Player or a red teddy bear in the case for IrfanView) But this does not happen with these MPEG files, they remain as the MPEG balloon icon. However, for some reason I have found that the icon "MPEG" will suddenly be displayed as normal and then the file CAN be imported to Movie Maker. Mostly they remain unchanged and cant be used. I have no idea what causes this.........

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just got a new pc with Vista Home Basic for Christmas. I have a samsung digital camera that's barely a year old. It takes video with sound in .avi format. Luckily the software that came with it installed fine, but when I try to play the videos, there's no sound. I think I have the 32 bit as an attempt to install a suggested fix gave me the error that the program was for a 64 bit.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a problem with WMP 11 playing .wmv files. It suddenly started to play these with distorted sound and slowed video. When I put any graphic file into the forlder with wmv file, open picture and slide to .wmv file it plays ok. I have already tried to reset WMP 11 settings with registry patch and tried /sfc scannow to no avail.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

Meaning when I record something, it would record whatever is playing on the computer. But I forgot how to make that setting.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Vista U x64 and am having sound problems. I have a prelude x-fi sound card but the sound coming out of it is extremely low. I have maxed out every thing I can max (control panel sound, creative panel) and the sound level is whisper quiet. I have also upgraded all my drivers except the prelude's, I would but their website isn't offering those drivers at the moment. But the drivers supplied with the card are vista certified so I should get something. But my mobo, etc is all updated. I have been searching for a solution for two days to no avail.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Core 2 2.0G Duo Processor, 2 Gig of ram and a 256MB ATI Mobility X1400 video card. I am running Windows Vista. Whenever I play a Divx movie with WMP it skips. Sometimes the sound plays good but the picture becomes slows down. After about 30 sec? min, the picture takes off and catches up to the sound. I have tried other players and I get the same results. The only one that seems to work is VLC player. I talked to a fella in a computer shop today and he suggested more ram. Is 2 gig of ram not enough, or should I have more? I have another computer that is also an Inspiron 6400 with the exact same hardware but it has XP on it. It does not have any problems with it. Is this a vista problem or do I need to upgrade it already?

I have no problem receiving pictures from others and no problem with my emails that I send. When I receive emails from her it shows there is an attachment, but the picture comes thru as the box with a red X. There is no yellow line above it to click on. Right clicking the red X doesn't work. As long as her emails show there is an attachment, why aren't her pictures coming through?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi was using a tweak guide to help speed up my computer running Vista Ultimate 64bit. I must have unchecked a box that turns off the display of picture properties as you hover the pointer over the picture. I don't even remember what it is called anymore so it makes it hard to find out where i must have unchecked it at. If anyone knows where in my OS i could find this and get it back i would truly appreciate it. Didn't think i would miss it, but i do.
