In addition to saving my files on the computer I also save them on CDs. Recently a CD with very important files on it developed a fault, which resulted in the CD showing empty. The whole idea of saving files is that if my computer crashes (as it did, so that I had to reinstall Windows loosing all my data) I will still have all my files on the CDs, but if these fail as well how else can I save the Files?
View 7 RepliesI am having an issue with some sites (like this one) not keeping my login name and password for more than the session I am here but this does not happen in XP so I have to assume is vista. I use IE7 and I have my favorite sites saved inside the Links folder so they show on the top of my browser, it saves me the time to go look for them and I just have to click on them once. Well, out 17 sites I am registered to, only 2 or 3 do this to me but only in Vista. Again, on my XP boot, this does not happen and it is driving me crazy because I don't know what to do. Things I have tried...
1.- login in and saving the the link once my name is showing on the site with issues.
2.- deleting the cookies for the site with issues and saving a new one.
If I go to a new site that I want to register, it ask me if I want to save my password so I know that is working as well. Any thoughts? I know is not that big of a deal but it irks me a bit that I don't know why it does it.
I m a newcomer to Vista and to make things more difficult for myself, I am using the Portuguese version yet I am not overly familiar with this language. I have Vista Home Premium. After I have read my email and deleted from my folders, the folder view
still shows a number of unread items. If I close and re-open Windows Mail the figures disappear. I have looked through some recent posts and see mention of ghost messages in Deleted Items, but in my case this shows up in all mail folders. I also saw that it was asked a few times whether an anti-virus program is running, so if this is relevant I am running AVG Internet Security 7.5.
Whenever I go to save something, y'know right-click, save as... etc., there's an arrow to the right which will display the last ~20 files saved, ostensibly to make it easier to save files with similar names. (Incidentally there's extreme redundancy between that and auto-complete.) I would like to disable this feature, mostly because people are always snooping in my computer, as well as the fact that I'm always accidentally clicking it.
Of course, I can merely save many files in the same format to overwrite the one on the drop-down, but that doesn't really solve the problem of my accidental clicking.
When I am downloading a file, I can only open it,because choosing "save" just closes the box and nothing happens. Also, Icannot right click on a picture and choose "save as" because yet again nothing happens. Various other related bugs are happening too. At first
I thought it was just an error with internet explorer buuuuuut, it also happens with non internet related applications such as the G.E.C.K.(Garden of Eden Creation Kit) for Fallout 3, when I edit, or create a modification, I click save, and guess what... nothing happens.
So I cannot save my work, or anything else. I can however print a page to a .xps document, and save stuff I paint in the Paint accessory. I recently purchased a new HP Media Center PC with Vista Home Premium installed. I promptly went in and created two admin accounts (password-protected) one for me, one for the wife, which may or may not be advisable, I know), and separate accounts for four of our children (these were set-up as standard, password-protected accounts). I was logged into my account (admin) and helping my son with a Word document for one of his class projects. I tried saving the document to the Documents folder in his account, and got a message saying I wasn't authorized. If I'm logged in to an account with admin rights, I didn't think that would be a problem. At least that's how it worked with XP. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone suggest a fix? Is this a matter of
tweaking a setting?
I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I can see the history when going through the star and then clicking history. It shows websites visited, UNLESS the person who visited them has deleted them from the history. I want to be able to monitor what my son is looking at, even if he knows how to delete from history by right-clicking in IE. reviously I had Windows XP, which would show the history by going through tools, internet options, browsing history, settings, view files. Even if the person had deleted the page from history while viewing, it would still show up using the method I'm describing. This doesn't work with Windows Vista. In fact, Windows Vista doesn't show ANY webpages that have been visited at all if you go through tools, internet options, browsing history, settings, view files. Is there some setting that I need to change to make it show the webpages, or is Vista incapable of doing this?

Why does a system restore in vista remove files with an .exe extension? I do not want to know about system restore, I want to know how to get my .exe files back. View 4 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of transferring some old analogue VHS tapes to my pc running Vista with a view to re-editing them in "Windows Movie Maker". I am using a "One Touch Video Grabber" to do this. As I want to keep the quality as high as possible I have selected "DVD" from the list of formats available with this device. The files arrive OK into the chosen folder and appear as MPEG with the icon showing balloons with MPEG written in the centre.
So far so good. These files will play OK in "Windows Media Player" but are impossible to import into Movie Maker which displays a message to this effect.This makes things a bit difficult. Vista normally shows avi/mpg/ etc files as a thumbnail frame of the film in question with the icon of the program that opens them in the bottom right hand corner.( eg a little yellow arrow in the case of Media Player or a red teddy bear in the case for IrfanView) But this does not happen with these MPEG files, they remain as the MPEG balloon icon. However, for some reason I have found that the icon "MPEG" will suddenly be displayed as normal and then the file CAN be imported to Movie Maker. Mostly they remain unchanged and cant be used. I have no idea what causes this.........
I have files in the folder, but it still shows the folder as 'empty'. I've tried refreshing, but it didn't help.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

My trouble is after I save a Word file I alaways back it up on my external hard drive for saftey sake.
Whenever I attempt to do this now, however, I always get the dialogue box "This is a read only file". How do I get rid of this annoying, frustrating problem. I simply want to back up a word document on an external drive ... so why won't it let me do it. And why does it stipulate that it is a "Read only file" when I never saved it originally as such?
I want my new messages to come in at the bottom but everytime I open my email box it is back at the top again. It is most annoying. This just started happening since I replaced my hard drive. Is there some setting I am missing?

"Right-click on the Documents file and choose properties. Select customize Use this folder as template: All Items Apply this template to subfolders" This list a fix for when located in specific area but for myself these files are not located it the documents folder and this fix does not work. If you feel this post would be better served elsewhere (security, network sharing)
I don't want to delete my pics, but I don't want them in the gallery anymore. Help tells me to right click on a folder and then choose "remove from gallery." I don't have this option.

I've set the folder options to "Remember folder views" and it still doesn't save. Each time for instance I go to Bank of America I have to put in all my login info again. Same with TV guide.will not remember my zip code, although it's supposed to. When I create an image, my programs create the image, and I can save it with no problem. When I create an animation, the programs need to save the file after it creates each frame. Vista is blocking those programs from doing
this, and I need to have them allowed to create and save these files constantly. I like the security that Vista has, but is there any way to allow just certain programs to do this while keeping that security feature on for everything else?
I have added my first Windows Vista Business to our Windows 2003 network domain. User home directories are redirected to a network share via a logon script (batch file). Note: as far as I know no group policy controlling the redirection, no roaming is being used.
Issue: Whenever the user logs off the profile doesn???t get saved and the next logon appears like it???s the first time logging in to the account. For example: the folders created are userName (for the first login) the next login creates userName.001 (for the next login) and so on. how to resolve the issue? Is it something to do with the new account structure and I have to modify the logon script?
