is there any registry setting to fix the display of picture files (bmp, jpg...) in windows explorer (thumbnail view). I just installed vista and ACDSee (a few days ago) and just today noticed that picture files in thumbnail view have the ACDSee icon. can anyone send me the default (vista) settings for .

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have ended up with damaged and/or destroyed JPEG images due to the thumbnail icon feature and/or Photo Gallery. The condition can be created as follows:
1. Browse to a folder containing JPEG images.
2. Do nothing... as Vista generates the thumbnails, it struggles, and only "half" of it is created (see below).
3. When the image is opened, it is corrupted.
My understanding is that generating a thumbnail should not alter the original image in anyway. However, a thumbnail that was generated fine once before for an image that was fine once before.... yields something like this, which was formerly a perfect picture of my wiener dog's nose Not sure why this is happening. I've run all sorts of hard drive diagnostics (even though this problem affects files I view on flash drives etc. also), virus/spyware scanners (everything clean), and yet nothing has been found to explain this phenomenon................
I'm not having much luck with Google and I realize it's off topic in here, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction for help. In Winzip 12.0 when I open a zip file with pictures in it, it always brings them up in thumbnail view. I can change the view to "details" and get a list of the filenames which is what I want to be the default action. But I can't seem to find a place where I can set that to the default. Winzip 8.0 didn't do this. I was *happy* with 8.0 but unfortunately it isn't compatible with Vista or Windows 7

I subscribed to one care yesterday..the thumbsplus icon the desktop out of maybe 30 icons has a little security shield on it's thumbnail also. Computer not generating them or something. - I have done all the things list here and I still cannot see any preview icons for any files or folders. Unless I use the list view which doesnt show previews anyway for picture or movie files. I have done a repair of Vista and that didnt fix the problem. I really dont want to start from scratch. I also cannot change my desktop image, and any file I try to upload wont change it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedA multitude of files, folders and sub-folders have disappeared (all from my "Documents"). Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:
- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........
My problem is that whenever I transfer image files from my digicam to my portable hard disk, some files get broken. This does not happen when I transfer the image files to the local hard disk. What I do is transfer the files directly from my memory card to my portable hard disk since I don't have my cable right now.
I tried using other image viewers such as ACDSee and XnView but still, the files can't be opened. I've also tried changing my portable hard disk from a Logitec to an I-O Data but still, the same problem persists. I tried saving the files first on the local hard disk and then moving them to the portable hard disk but to no avail.
AVI files are showing as sound and no picture. Under filters I only have the AVI decompresser one, no other filters. I have tried downloading the codecs for them but still no luck. If these are supposed to appear under filters they don't.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I booted my Vista Business laptop this morning the wallpaper had gone black. I used to use a pic from my Pictures folder as my background. Now I can no longer access picture files or thumbnails through the Desktop Background applet in Control Panel. When I try to browse to the Pictures folder it appears empty. When I mouse over the contents, I get blank transparent boxes with the picture names, instead of thumbnails. If I try to use a Windows background picture, the thumbnails there are pixellated generic icons. The only background I can set is Solid Colour. I can change colours but that's it. There's no error message when I try to change my wallpaper. My user account is an Administrator (both domain and local) and I don't use screen savers. I've already tried the following suggestions from this board (rebooted after each step):
- Checked Group Policy settings, made sure all items under User ConfigurationAdmin. templatesDesktopDesktop are set to "not configured"
- Checked Ease of Use settings, backgrounds are NOT disabled
- Downloaded and "merged" the "wallpaper enable" reg file from Winhelp
- Downloaded/ran KB Hotfix 934008
- Tried steps in Vista Tutorial on disabling/enabling desktop changes, including other links to reg hacks (none of which worked).
I turned off User Account Control but in Explorer I still can't open Documents and Settings and a number of other folders. How can I configure Vista so that I can view any folder/file I want , as I could in XP ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have cd with all the pics from my son't first year on it. I don't have these files saved anywhere except for the cd anymore. I opened it once today because I got some more files that I needed to see if they were on it. There were some that weren't. So, I went to burn them and noticed that I actually didn't want some of the temp files waiting to be burned on there. So, I canceled it. Then I went to open the cd again to redo which ones I wanted to burn. Now, I can't view the files on the cd anymore. It just says drag files to add them to the disk.
When I right click on the drive in my computer I can browze with Infran that I have installed. But, not even half of the pictures are there. The disk was not made on a vista computer. But, I don't think that is the issue because it opened just before all of this happened. My dh also has vista and I tried to open it on his. It says the disk may be corrupt or needs to be formatted. I tried to format it. But, it says it will erase the files. Not that I know what it was before. But, right now it says that there is 89.9mb used and 612mb free. But, nothing will open when I open folder to view files. Please tell me the pics are not lost.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of transferring some old analogue VHS tapes to my pc running Vista with a view to re-editing them in "Windows Movie Maker". I am using a "One Touch Video Grabber" to do this. As I want to keep the quality as high as possible I have selected "DVD" from the list of formats available with this device. The files arrive OK into the chosen folder and appear as MPEG with the icon showing balloons with MPEG written in the centre.
So far so good. These files will play OK in "Windows Media Player" but are impossible to import into Movie Maker which displays a message to this effect.This makes things a bit difficult. Vista normally shows avi/mpg/ etc files as a thumbnail frame of the film in question with the icon of the program that opens them in the bottom right hand corner.( eg a little yellow arrow in the case of Media Player or a red teddy bear in the case for IrfanView) But this does not happen with these MPEG files, they remain as the MPEG balloon icon. However, for some reason I have found that the icon "MPEG" will suddenly be displayed as normal and then the file CAN be imported to Movie Maker. Mostly they remain unchanged and cant be used. I have no idea what causes this.........
Im having trouble with my thumbnail previews. I have tried everything mentioned on this forum (clearing/rebuilding thumbnail cache, turned on thumbnail preview, checked/unchecked what I needed to). Ive done this numerous times and yet i still cannot preview thumbnails. Whether it be jpegs, gifs, avis, wmvs etc. I also noticed that my files do not end in .jpg, .gif, .avi when trying to view as thumbnails.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't really know how long ago this problem started I didn't really notice it at first but the previews for alt tabbing between programs along with the previews when hovering over the minimized program show up like the alt tabbing in Windows XP. Also my Windows key-tab does not work. Any ideas to what could be causing this? I checked my settings and they seem to be the same as when the previews where working.
