Corruption Of Images On Thumbnail View

Mar 26, 2008

I have ended up with damaged and/or destroyed JPEG images due to the thumbnail icon feature and/or Photo Gallery. The condition can be created as follows:

1. Browse to a folder containing JPEG images.
2. Do nothing... as Vista generates the thumbnails, it struggles, and only "half" of it is created (see below).
3. When the image is opened, it is corrupted.

My understanding is that generating a thumbnail should not alter the original image in anyway. However, a thumbnail that was generated fine once before for an image that was fine once before.... yields something like this, which was formerly a perfect picture of my wiener dog's nose Not sure why this is happening. I've run all sorts of hard drive diagnostics (even though this problem affects files I view on flash drives etc. also), virus/spyware scanners (everything clean), and yet nothing has been found to explain this phenomenon................

OT - Winzip 12.0: Open A Zip File With Pictures In It, It Always Brings Them Up In Thumbnail View

Mar 23, 2010

I'm not having much luck with Google and I realize it's off topic in here, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction for help. In Winzip 12.0 when I open a zip file with pictures in it, it always brings them up in thumbnail view. I can change the view to "details" and get a list of the filenames which is what I want to be the default action. But I can't seem to find a place where I can set that to the default. Winzip 8.0 didn't do this. I was *happy* with 8.0 but unfortunately it isn't compatible with Vista or Windows 7

Flash Drive Corruption

May 5, 2010

I have a flash drive that I like to use. It is heavily used and often filled to almost all of its capacity. Just a few minutes ago I was using it with my XP computer and I opened up one of my folders to find that all of my files were gone to be replaced with folders and files with strange characters. If I try deleting anything, it says the directory does not exist. All that I can do is to format it. After formatting, I plugged it into my Vista but it said that it was corrupted or unreadable. I am wondering if it is a virus or if I should just get a new flash drive.

Not Run ActiveX Due To A Corruption From The Adware/virus

Mar 23, 2008

I had some infected files removed from my system last night. The tech informed me that because my system will not run ActiveX due to a corruption from the adware/virus that I needed to contact my vendor to do a system file scan and repair. What are my options at this point? Do I need to re-install or repair Vista? Will that correct the problem?

Suspected Windows Mail Corruption

Mar 3, 2010

I generated a group of 35 different mails under a name and tried to send a normal e-mail to these 35 different people. Windows mail would not let me. it came up with an error.I checked with my internet and e-mail provider (Comcast) and confirmed all server settings in windows mail were correct. I then tested it by sending a test e-mail to myself via Comcast's "Smart Zone" communications and that worked fine. So I then tried to send a normal e-mail via windows mail to one person and received the following error message; The connection to the server has failed. Subject '

This is a test', Account: 'mail.comcast.net (1)', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10013, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E. The subject of my e-mail was 'This is a test' and the incoming and outgoing servers in windows mail are 'mail.comcast.net(1)' and 'smtp.concast.net' respectively. I then thought well I'll have to use Outlook Express and pay the fee but then found out Microsoft vista doesn't support Outlook Express.

I installed the game earlier and then got a dll error when I tried to start the game so I did a quick search of the net and found a fix (install latest DirectX 9, it runs longside DirectX 9) The game then started, in the main menu I noticed some white flickering and when I started the actual game there was just major graphical corruption everywhere, it was unplayable. I am using the 174 nvidia drivers, here are my specs:-.... I just can't figure it out. Has anybody else got this game running fine on Vista Ultimate 64?.

Graphical Corruption In High-dpi Mode With Aero Enabled.

Mar 23, 2008

If i increase my dpi to anything above 96 dpi (and reboot) i will get graphical corruption after a few minutes. The corruption is limited to "glass" areas. For example the start menu may appear as a sheet of pure glass. Buttons on the taskbar, could appear all mached together. The Alt+Tab panel won't paint itself. Ossasionally an entire window's client area will be transparent, rather than painting anything.

If i kill and restart Explorer it fixes itself, for a few minutes. If i disable Aero (switch to Windows Vista Basic these) it's fine. If i kill the DWM.exe (which disables Aero) it's fine. If i set it back to 96dpi and reboot, it's fine. nVidia GeForce 6600GT. Any drivers you like, Windows Update's WHQL, nVidia direct, same problem..........

Also my Windows key-tab does not work. Any ideas to what could be causing this? I checked my settings and they seem to be the same as when the previews where working. not sure if thumbnail preview is the right term. - wanted to ask about why or how i might be able to fix ....... scenario: when i open a folder....

1. if its full of pdf files (ex.: e-books) i dont see the preview / covers of the e-books any more as before - just the foxit icon
2. if the folder is full of videos (ex: movies) i dont see a small clip of a scene as before now i only see my VLC Player icon. (the big orange cone) was there some setting that i might changed, not realizing? new things that ive done lately:
.....have tried like crazy to better boot time by following the guide at Black Viper
.....at this moment im using the Vista Basic Theme (no aero). really dont care much for the thumbnail previews on taskbar. have checked: when i open a folder and click on organize & select folder and search options under view tab - the option "always show icons, never thumbnails" is NOT checked. ???? have also tried clearing the thumbnail cache by deleting thumbnails under disk cleanup????

Thumbnail: Not Showing A Preview

Sep 11, 2009

I have a lot of videos and the thumbnails are not showing a preview of the video, but instead show an icon (see "Attachment 1"). I already tried the following:

1. Deleted Thumbnail cache via Disk Cleanup.
2. Verified that "Show thumbnails instead of icons" was checked via Visual Effects in Performance Options.
3. Verified that "Always show icons, never thumbnails" was NOT checked via Folder Options.
4. I also heard that this happens when the "K-Lite Codec Pack" is on the computer. So I uninstalled this (to no avail) and reinstalled it (again nothing).

The preview does not appear for any WMV or AVI files. All pictures and other videos are perfect (that I know of).

Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"

Sep 30, 2009

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

WPG Not Displaying B&W Images Correctly

Jul 26, 2009

I have an issue with Windows Photo Gallery and viewing black & white images. The problem I am having is the white parts of the image seems to have an almost light blueish tint, and the black parts look like they were done using dark blue ink.

The thumbnail for the image, as well as opening it in paint and opening it in slideshow displays the image correctly.

So far, I attempted to fix this problem myself by changing my ICC profile in the color management settings multiple times, even rebooting my pc for some of the changes, as well as uninstalling my monitor drivers, with unsuccessful results. I do not know if this is an issue with my OS, my monitor, or my video card.

Images Are All Squished Vertically

Sep 1, 2009

I recently did a clean install of Vista 64bit and installed an ATI Radeon HD 4350 card at the same time. I'm running a Dell LCD monitor at 1600x1200, its native resolution. I have checked the device manager and there are no warnings associated with the card and I have checked to be sure that I have the latest driver. Until the Vista install, I was using Windows XP Pro with no distortion. I had a gForce graphics card which was not supported in Vista. I'm a photographer and don't play any computer games. The problem is that all the images are squished some vertically. Even round graphics like circles are somewhat distorted vertically.

Dual Boot (using Images)

Mar 22, 2007

I have a Windows XP image and a Vista image. I have a 240GB drive I spit into 2 partitions. So I want to be able to load the respective images, make necessary boot adjustments and get them both to boot with a menu. Tried this: Downloaded Vista to first partition. Downloaded XP to the 2nd partition (both with images). Copied ntdetect, ntldr, boot.ini to the vista root.

Modified boot.ini to what I thought was correct. Used EasyBCD to modify the Vista Boot Loader. I did get the menu correctly on reboot but got a 2nd menu with 2 entries (default). Both just reboot the PC. What did I do wrong? I read somewhere that the the nstall path get's built into ntldr, but that doesen't sound right.

Hd Partition Corruption Error Code "0x80070571 "

I realise this may not be a fix for everyone, but this has worked on more than one occasion that i've come across this.. If you are getting this error message and you've ran through the normal HD tests, and everything is coming out fine.. (this will blow your mind)Go and empty your C:/Users/yourusernamehere/AppData/Local/Temp folder of everything that you can.. just do a mass delete and skip any system files.. Voila.. You have a working machine again.. I dont know whether this is a bug, or what caused it.. But everything's ship shape here now.. I know that i'll be clearing that out more often from now on.. That was the first time i'd cleared it in a year and a half at least.

Generic Icons Don't Show Thumbnail

Dec 18, 2008

I am not certain that this can be done in vista, but... Whenever I open a folder containing pictures, the picture files appear as generic icons and don't show their thumbnail. How can I get my picture files to show as thumbnails? Also, I use several picture editors (Picasa, Fastone, Elements 4, etc). Can I get them all to appear in "Open with" recommended section. When I right click on a picture file and select open with, I get recommended and other programs. I guess, now that I have fiddled with this a little, that what I really want to be able to do is to place the programs I want into the recommended section and remove those that I don't want there (like put them into the Other Programs section. May I assume that once I know how to do this (if it is possible), that whenever I get an "open with," I should be able to customize it?

Can't Recognise My System Backup Images

May 24, 2009

This issue has popped up a couple of times on the forum, but none of the solutions seem to work for me...

I'm running Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS1330 notebook. I used the Vista back up computer tool to make images of the system c: drive and a second data partition. These were written to a USB hard drive as H:ComputerNameBackup 2009-05-22 162639etc. I have since formatted and re-partitioned the on board hard drive and expected to be able to restore my system and data onto the new partitions. I have tried to restore from a Vista Recovery CD and from within Vista, after re-installing, but it always fails to see the backup.

I have also tried copying the back up folder onto a ntfs partition, but it still wasn't recognised.
