I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 and noticed that when I play and MPEG files I have no sound.I though this might be a problem with the Microsoft media player but I get the same result with anothermedia.The files used to play just fine and I do not know when the problem occurred.
View 4 RepliesI've got a problem with WMP 11 playing .wmv files. It suddenly started to play these with distorted sound and slowed video. When I put any graphic file into the forlder with wmv file, open picture and slide to .wmv file it plays ok. I have already tried to reset WMP 11 settings with registry patch and tried /sfc scannow to no avail.

It works… but lacks the MPEG Layer-3 Format I need for compressing WAVs.In his earlier reply to me at http://www.vistax64.com/sound-audio/189750-vista-vs-xp-sound-recorder.html , sanantonio007 says he can now access MPEG Layer-3 in XP Sound Recorder after following Brady Lee’s instructions here: This Missing CODEC thing is making me crazy Lee’s instructions say that the “missing” codec problem is due to a Windows/System 32 file that should read l3codecp.acm instead of l3codeca.acm. Lee goes on to describe a regedit modification to change the l3codeca.acm file to l3codecp.acm.
However, I already have a l3codecp.acm file in Windows/System 32 (as well as the “erroneous” l3codeca.acm.) So that doesn’t look like my solution. Someone else told me that if I downloaded the MPEG Layer-3 codec from a dbpoweramp music converter link, it would install itself everywhere - & my XP Sound Recorder would be back up and running. Has anyone tried that? Does anyone know if (or where) I could get just the dbpoweramp MPEG Layer-3 codec, & not lots of other stuff I don’t need or want? Better yet… does anyone have a simpler solution? All I want is to run my old XP Sound Recorder in Vista – WITH the MPEG Layer-3 Format WAV compression format,
I noticed that weeks ago I could simply click at a site with an MPEG file and view it without having to download it. Now I am forced (at least at one site) to download it. What can I change of anything to have Vista automatically open it and view it from the remote site.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of transferring some old analogue VHS tapes to my pc running Vista with a view to re-editing them in "Windows Movie Maker". I am using a "One Touch Video Grabber" to do this. As I want to keep the quality as high as possible I have selected "DVD" from the list of formats available with this device. The files arrive OK into the chosen folder and appear as MPEG with the icon showing balloons with MPEG written in the centre.
So far so good. These files will play OK in "Windows Media Player" but are impossible to import into Movie Maker which displays a message to this effect.This makes things a bit difficult. Vista normally shows avi/mpg/ etc files as a thumbnail frame of the film in question with the icon of the program that opens them in the bottom right hand corner.( eg a little yellow arrow in the case of Media Player or a red teddy bear in the case for IrfanView) But this does not happen with these MPEG files, they remain as the MPEG balloon icon. However, for some reason I have found that the icon "MPEG" will suddenly be displayed as normal and then the file CAN be imported to Movie Maker. Mostly they remain unchanged and cant be used. I have no idea what causes this.........
I have Logitech X-530 speakers, a 5.1 setup. Yesterday I wanted to use my headset to play a game, so I had to change my settings to stereo to get the sound out of both the left and right headphones. When I had finished, I changed it back to 5.1 through the control panel, but now the sound is only playing out of the left and right speakers. All speakers are functional, since when I test it through the control panel the 'bing' sound plays through all one-by-one. The speakers worked fully in 5.1 before I changed the settings. Windows Vista 32bit SP2.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have the notebook since a month and everything works fine. however, i always have that strange sound playing in vista. it happens every 5-10mins, i dont know what it it. its not caused by the hardware, but its played by vista, so to make it clear it is a soundfile. i have no clue, which software or whatever causes it. anyone, who has an idea? and no, it was already there with the original setup, it is not because of any software i installed additionally. i would really be happy, if someone knows how to stop that.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm don't even know if this is a Vista issue but I'm beginning to run out of areas to investigate. While playing WoW, my computer screen will freeze for approximately 3-5 seconds. Generally speaking, this happens after I've been playing for "a while". I've had it happen as soon as 30 minutes into my gaming, or as late as 3-4 hours; however, once it starts it then repeats itself with increasing frequency, reboots seems to help a little. There is no "trigger" that sets it off, I've had it happen in indoor environments, outdoor environments, 25 man raids, or by myself.
During this freeze my toon online will just stand there like an idiot. On my end, the video completely freezes but whatever sound was playing at the moment of freeze will play itself over and over at about 1/2 second intervals, kind of a machine gun effect of sound. I also get a sound from the computer case that might be the sound of a hard drive getting accessed..................
All .wmv files have stopped playing. I noticed the wmpconfig, wmplayer, and wmpshare files were updated 10/11/07. This appears to have occurred with an automatic Windows update. What happened and how do I fix this. No program I have on my computer will play these videos. I'm running Vista Home Premium.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Ultimate x64 and noticed a problem recently when playing music via windows media center. However, having played around in WMP11 also, WMP is doing the same thing so I believe the problem is somewhere in there. Initially the problem started when trying to play a collection of mp3 files off my local drive. Whether it be via an existing playlist or simply by selecting an album within WMC. The problem is that a track plays and then WMC/WMP freezes on the next track. If I skip to the next track that plays, but then the next track freezes. Sometimes the 1st track on the list doesn't play but the next will. Sometimes the 1st plays and then the next won't!
So, I closed WMC and opened up WMP directly. (This happens in both x86 and x64 versions of WMP by the way). If I create a playlist, the same thing happens a track plays, then freezes, if I skip on, the next track plays and then the next one freezes.....
I was discussing Vista with a few friends over on a Linux website. They say: Vista will not play MPEG or MP3 files if Vista thinks they are illegal downloads. Vista will not allow you to store downloaded music. Vista calls home every day to tell MS what programs, keystrokes and internet sites you use. Vista will not allow you to Copy a DVD for your own home use as a backup. Is any of this true? I have yet to have any problems. I do value what little privacy I can get so if Vista calls home everyday that's crap...
View 8 Replies View RelatedVista Ultimate (non SP1) on desktop PC approved to run Vista. Vista Business (non SP1) on laptop approved to run Vista. When desktop had XP and the laptop had Vista I had no trouble sharing files/folders. Right after Vista was installed on the desktop (before a random reboot) I could share files/folders between both Vista PCs. Now I can't share files/folders. I have enabled file and printer sharing on the desktop. I have added a user to the desktop with the same "name" as the user on the laptop. Both computers are part of the same Workgroup. I have set up several shares: Music, Video, Storage (docs & programs, etc.) and can't access them from the laptop through the network share, so I also can't map the drives. If memory serves me I also allowed 'Everyone' share permission also. And UAC is disabled on both machines. The The UPNP music and video files share fine. One more thing, I am fully updated up to SP1. Unless SP1 is known to resolve this issue (I've read about this before but can't seem to fix my problem with it) I won't be installing it.

The whole codec thing is over my head and more trouble than I want to deal with. Is it a Vista thing? Are wav files no longer compatible? The old recorder program used to record and play them. I can't find anything that simple anymore.

I can play the files on my computer with QuickTime player, but when I try to play them with Windows Media Center on the same PC, it says "Cannot play video. One or more codecs required to play this content cannot be found." The first time I tried to play these in Media Center, it downloaded a codec first before attempting to play, but it still cannot play them. How can I make Media Center play these video files?

View 8 Replies View Relatedlately my Media Player stopped playing DivX/XVid files. Prior to that I've installed PowerDVD in order to play a VOB file on my Vista machine. I think it is since then that the Media Player stopped functioning properly. Now I can play WMV/MP3 etc but not AVI. I've removed PowerDVD now; reinstalled DivX pack; reinstalled XVid codecs. Still no use.

I just got a new pc with Vista Home Basic for Christmas. I have a samsung digital camera that's barely a year old. It takes video with sound in .avi format. Luckily the software that came with it installed fine, but when I try to play the videos, there's no sound. I think I have the 32 bit as an attempt to install a suggested fix gave me the error that the program was for a 64 bit.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Vista U x64 and am having sound problems. I have a prelude x-fi sound card but the sound coming out of it is extremely low. I have maxed out every thing I can max (control panel sound, creative panel) and the sound level is whisper quiet. I have also upgraded all my drivers except the prelude's, I would but their website isn't offering those drivers at the moment. But the drivers supplied with the card are vista certified so I should get something. But my mobo, etc is all updated. I have been searching for a solution for two days to no avail.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Vista 32bit service pack 2. I held off because of a problem I was having with service pack 1 (as I am about to explain), but I thought service pack 2 may have fixed the problem. However, it hasn't.
When I try to play a DVD through Windows Media Center it is just all fuzzy and static. You can see the picture moving, but it's so fuzzy and pixelated that it's impossible to actually make anything out. When I play through Media Player, the picture is just black. The sound is working fine in both programs.
I downloaded a program called VLC media player, and that plays the DVDs just fine, so does this mean that it is a problem with codecs? I'm not too sure, hence why I'm asking here on how to fix the problem. Obviously I could just keep using this new VLC player, but I prefer using Media Center.
with all the latest games I have bought (gta IV and mirror's edge) I get DEP errors. I tried to exclude them from DEP but my vista won't accept it. So now every ten minutes my games freeze up. What can I do about it? I've read some artikels about shutting of DEP completely. I'm wondering though what that will mean for my security. On some other forums it has been implied that the DEP errors have something to do with faulty hardware.

My new PC with Vista Business edition will not play DVD's on Media Player as I was told it would do. I get an error message saying no encoder installed. The help search said go to options and enable encoder. It still doesn't play. Do I need some kind of encoder?
