Dec 4, 2009my laptop has suddenly developed "blue screen of death" and it happens too quickly to record the error.
no new software or hardware added recently.Thought the backlight on the screen had failed after as I had a blank screen but after connection to a separate screen and doing a system restore my screen is ok.working ok at the moment but every so often after shutdown the "Blue" returns....
Ran a scan in safe mode and zilch...

Sudden Slow Wifi (unable To Fix)
Jan 27, 2010i run the internet through my wifi, the service is provided by the apartment complex to everyone. it is an incredibly strong signal for the whole building, and i am right beneath the source so i have always had just an amazing speed on my internet. the other day, while chatting on facebook of all places, something happened (what i do not know) and the firefox crashed. since that moment the internet has been chugging. and i mean chugging! it takes almost 2min just to load a page. (this is not consistent however some pages load faster) downloading speeds have all but stopped (i don't know how to check for just how fast they are going) i can't even load up Internet videos now its so slow.
i tried several fixes for the problem, but being a noob i think i screwed it up worse because its even slower than before. first i used uniblue registry cleaner and speed upper thing. they just screwed up my computer even worse and it was taking forever just to open a file folder let along load a webpage. i did a system restore to undue that damage. i tried resetting the autotuning. that did not work i even did an ipconfig/renew release thing. that almost did me in. i finally got the internet running again. still slow.
SP1 - Sudden Freezes With BEEP Of Death
Mar 24, 2008I left it on running for several days on top of a cooling pad fan to avoid any overheating. There was basically no activity or nothing running except BitTorrent downloading some files over wireless LAN. I have Avast antivirus installed. All possible drivers updates/service packs were downloaded and installed. The notebook runs on the latest BIOS version from HP. Suddenly, the computer beeped loudly a few times and the screen showed white colour patches everywhere that covered up a large portion of the screen, then got frozen completely. The only thing I could do was to switch it off by pressing the power button 6 seconds. After booting it up again, I couldn't see much information in the event viewer that tells me what went wrong.
Another horror story: I had a few tabs opened on IE7. I went to a website with java applet for chat room. Once I clicked the Java applet, IE7 suddenly crashed/disappeared. No error reporting or anything - it just took place so suddenly. I could not repeat this problem as it seems intermittent.It does make me feel that after a year's wait, I still have no faith in Windows' reliability. I wonder how many more centuries will they take to create a rock solid high performing computer for home/business?

Sudden Upload Speed Slowdown
May 8, 2008A few days ago out of the blue my upload speed went down to practically zero. I know it's my computer because the other computers on the network can still upload fine. When I run a speed test the download comes back fine (~1275kbps on a 1536kbps connection) but the upload either doesn't finish or comes back at something like 10kbps. My connection for upload is 800kbps. I use qwest dsl.

For any individual sub folder I can right click and change the customize properties to detail view, but for the C: drive no such option is aviable. How can I change the view back to details?

The behaviour is this; sudden black screen, PC hard drives and fans still running, a 3-4 second interval, PC powers down, auto restart of PC, boots to 'SAFE mode' options boot screen, then reboots entirely normally when 'start my computer normally' is selected. I have scoured the error log and have found several unusual entries. I am at a major loss as to their relevance.

May 5, 2008I have had the common problem on not being able to install KB938371 update which is one of the 3 prerequisites to downloading through Microsoft Update the SP1. I have tried all the tricks and suggestion published throughout the web except an in place reinstall of Vista Business. This is highly undesireable since my sony laptop will only reinstall Vista Business as per original with all the software originally shipped which is a pain to remove.
If I download the entire sp1 750mb file, will it install without the prerequsite files? I have read that the prerequisites were actually a compilation of sp1 files and not an actual update to Vista. This being the case, it seems that if the sp1 file were downloaded it would work.

May 28, 2009I got directions for this with my new PC & from the Microsoft website. In one of their few areas of consistency, both said I needed to install WET on the old XP computer, which I did by downloading form the MS website. On my first attempt, my new computer said the files created on my portable hard disk by my old computer running WET could not be read. They had be copied as read only and could not be read evenafter I changed that attribute. On my second attempt, WET on my new computer told me that the DAT files created by the old one were created by an earlier WET version and could not be transferred. But I installed WET AFTER I bought the new computer from the allegedly up-to-date MS website.

I also cannot type anything in the email created when replying to these messages. I should note that he has Vista at work also on some of their computers including the one he uses and he has none of these issues. Is there a setting I need to change? I've searched the internet along with this site for a solution and haven't seen this particular problem. If need be I can send the email property details to show you. Oct 17, 2009I've been trying to get rid of one of those pernicious programs that I inadvertantly downloaded when I attempted to download a file that purported to be an explanation of the COMDLG32.OCX. Its one of those PC scan programs, I did a search on it and deleted every file that I could find, but since Vista doesn't have a feature to remove programs I guess that I'll have to find another way.

Desktop Destroyed:don't Want To "make An Sudden Moves"
Jan 18, 2010I have moderate computer knowledge, but I'm stumped. I've read quite a bit on this issue and I don't want to "make an sudden moves." I'm on Vista Home Premium 64bit w/ a Dell XPS 1340 laptop. I recently got a new net provider (Clear) and service was great at first then it turned to crap. Being a bit obsessive, I read as much as I could about any way to fix it. In the process I ruined my shell folders which house like 90% of my files. I used a program called TCP Optimizer and it changed my registry. Upon rebooting, I got the temporary profile. I thought my system had been wiped til I got the popup saying it just didn't load correctly.
I rebooted again and still all of my settings were gone along with my desktop and "documents." I searched and found them in some temp folder. I then copied them back to where they belonged. I accepted that the registry may have ruined all my settings and restarted reconfiging everything. I was happy to still have my files and programs. After doing some more reading about my shoddy ISP I realized that I hadn't done a full shutdown and unplugging of the modem, so I did...............
System Fat16 File System Recovery Won't Work

I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. Jul 1, 2008I have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...
So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).

Oct 15, 2009when i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?

For example, if I want to search my C drive for all PDF files or all photos, the search function won't work without entering text from a file name (which doesn't work, because all files of a particular type don't necessarily share letters or characteristics in their names). May 15, 2010Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs. It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.
Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.) I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.
File Names Not Sorted Properly In File List
Mar 23, 2008When I open a folder with a list of files for all View Options, the files are not listed in proper ascending sequence. I indexed the files to make sure that indexing may not be the factor in the Sort By Name not working properly. After the files were indexed, clicked the Sort By Name item in the View menu item, and the files are stilled not sorted porperly. Has anyone encountered this similar problem ? I suspect this may be a bug in Windows Vista File System. The folder had 87 files in it.

But it created a file on my desktop which is corrupted and the original file is corrupted (neither will open). I cannot delete this file from my desktop or other location now and it has seemed to slow down my PC. When I try to delete, I get a popup box that says "Recycling 1 item... from Desktop, Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)" and it just stays in an neverending do loop.
