Apr 27, 2008Why when I click on a link in windows mail do I get "windows cannot find? make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again" after that it go's no to open my browser.

Unable To Open Attachments In Windows Mail: Windows Cannot Find File Name
Jul 29, 2009There are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution. About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes could open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message saying: "Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course I didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder. I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold photo and the caption would not appear.

Mar 23, 2008I recently upgraded to VISTA and discovered I didn't like Windows Mail because of the way the autofill thing works for the addresses. So, someone in this group told me to upgrade to Windows Live Mail. I did that and so far have been very happy with it. Except that, I can't find new stationery for the program. I love using cloudeight stationery and it was working on the windows mail, but not on windows live mail. I emailed and asked them about this and the following is their reply to me. Is this true? Mar 31, 2009My computer crashed and I currently have my hard drive set up externally to copy the information off of it onto another computer. I was using Windows Mail that came with Vista on my old computer when it crashed. I've been able to salvage my data, but would like to find my messages stored in my Inbox in Windows Mail. I cannot open the program (Windows Mail) currently, but will be able to open it when my new computer arrives. For now, I'm copying needed files off my hard drive and storing them temporarily on my children's computer. I do not know what folders from Windows Mail, or Windows perhaps, that I need to save in order to hopefully open my saved inbox messages.

Oct 6, 2009What, if any, inferences can be drawn from the fact that there are typically three times more posts about Windows Mail (WM) than Windows Live Mail (WLM). Could it be that:
(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?
(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?
(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?
My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. I am cross-posting this to both newsgroups and suggest that replies go to WM as it has the larger following.

May 12, 2010If you have installed Windows Mail on a Windows 7 computer,yesterday's update contains a KB978542 patch which changes msoe.dll so it won't run on Windows 7. I had warned about these types of issues when Win7 was first released. Microsoft claims it was done for security=20 reasons, see To get it working again, replace the new non-working copy of msoe.dll in Windows 7 with a copy of the new patched version of msoe.dll from a Vista machine.=20
Note: I ran into permissions issues when trying to delete the = non-working msoe.dll, so rather than fighting that, I renamed the Win7 Windows Mail directory to "Windows Mail-X", then I copied and pasted the Windows Mail directory from the Vista machine. I suspect that Windows Mail will = become less and less compatible with Win7 as time goes along.=20
Diagnosing: Windows Cannot Find .
Jun 6, 2009In the process of trying to get current (I am within 2000 messages) with the messages in this group, I have seen many requests for help with problems about attachments. I am interested in helping diagnose the problem if I can.
I don't need help with a workaround; I don't mind saving attachments, which works for me. I am a developer with Visual Studio 2008 and such and I will attempt to diagnose the problem if possible.
I had assumed I don't have the problem but I am getting the following when I try to view a jpeg attachment:
"Windows cannot find 'Photo0192.jpg'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Is that the same problem most people are getting when they have a problem
with attachments?
The only thing I am aware of that might have caused a problem is that I installed IE 8 when it was still very buggy, and then I uninstalled it.
Later at some point Windows Update re-installed IE 8 (I assume that happened when IE 8 was released). I assume that since most people encountering the problem are non-technical, they would not have installed a beta version of IE 8.
Could the problem be a security problem? If so, could it might help to audit security failures? I am not sure of the details of doing that, but I am interested in trying things such as that if it helps diagnose the problem for Microsoft to know what to fix.
