My laptop has gotten so slow and I dont know whats causing it and would like to know how to fix it without having to send it away to get fixed (im too skint). I have LOADS of space left, barely anything installed, and ive no idea on what is causing this problem. Ive tried using CCleaner to search for viruses and to clean the laptop up but it said there were none found.
View 6 RepliesI bought a PC with Windows Vista Home Premium, 32bit, Norton McAfee AV included.
Specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5 GHz, 4 GB Ram, Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT.
First time I started it up It worked fine. Then I installed some programs (two games, a DVD media player, MSN Messenger).
The first few times I restarted the PC it was fine, but then after Windows Vista installed the Updates it rebooted and now it reboots EXTREMELY slow. And this on the first day!
It takes at least 10 minutes at the Bios-Screen and then when it is done there it slowly (another 5 min at least) to start windows.
After start-up everything works fine.
What should I do? Did I do something wrong during an install?
I neve had such problems with XP, although removing McAfee AV really quickened the start up (not the initial Bios Booting though) whern I had XP.
I am very PC-Challenged when it comes to Networking & Internet and I have 2 problems at the office that you may be able to help me with. We have a small business package from AT&T (used to be bellsouth), one of those lines if a dedicated ADSL broadband, each line has a filter and we also have a Netopia ADSL router (motorola 3347-02-1006L) + linksys Gigabit 8 port switch.
There is 1 server (Windows 2000 Server OS w/SP4) and 3 workstations running XP Pro w/SP3 (2GB's of Ram all up to date with drivers and MS updates... I make sure of that). The server sits very close to my workstation as I have a KVM switch to adjust or make changes on it and to utilize only 1 monitor + kb/mouse. This is the first issue we have: (Gibabit Ethernet adapters on workstations)
One of my partners claims that if my computer is off, the software we use to sell our products runs very fast on his computer but, as soon as I turn on my workstation and I load the software, his speeds show significant downtime (slowness?). Again, not being very knowledgeable at networking I find this to be annoying but illogical at the same time
I'm a new Vista user and I've been struggling with extremely slow file copies between my Vista 64 Home Premium SP1 system and my XP SP3 system. I've searched and searched and tried a number of suggestions in posts that I have found. None have worked. I'm running a Wireless G (54mbps) network. My Internet access from both system is very fast (FiOS 20mbps download), so no issues there.
When I say extremely slow I'm talking less than 200 KBps. I get the same slow response using Explorer and Robocopy. I have disabled autotuning and RSS with these commands.

I am using vista without sp1. It takes about 6 minutes to extract a 900kb file. This is consistant with any zip file I try to extract. Another example was a file that was 1.7mb which took almost 30 minutes. I do not use any 3rd party programs currently for dealing with zipped files and this was a clean vista install. I thought maybe there was a coflict with the file being virus scanned as it was extracting. I was using AVG but I have it disabled so that it doesn't launch at startup. Please note that is not the most current version of AVG designed for vista. I recall this being a problem even before I installed AVG antivirus however this may still be some part of the issue. I wanted to check for other suggestions before I completely dumped my virus program
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently "clean install" Vista SP1 Home Premium to replace XP on my Dell Desktop; it's working but start up and shut down are extremely slow. I have a new laptop with same Vista SP1 version but it's much faster on power up and down. By the way, I have CA virus program on the Desktop, but McAfee on the laptop. One major difference between two computers is that I do have MSOffice Bussiness 2007 with Outlook and using the outlook on the desktop but I am using Windows Mail on the Laptop
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just cant' seem to get search to work worth a damn in Vista. Files that I know I have Vista doesn't find and it is extremely slow. I'm not a computer expert by any stretch, but I never had trouble with using search in XP.
I do like much about Vista, just need a search feature that doesn't search for stuff like my kids would. Anyone point me to a program that works with Vista and is safe to use?
can I speed up my browsing on the internet? I know some sites are slower than others but, as of late, the internet seems to slow down to a crawl yet, when I do the speed test, I end up scoring higher or just where I am supposed to be at. I only use Avast as my A.V. & Spyware + Windows Firewall, no proxies. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am going crazy trying in Vista to execute a simple search for a string of text in all files of a particular type, something I used to do very often in earlier versions of Windows! It appears that to do this I have to:
(a) first type in the file type (eg *.doc) and wait for that to deliver results.
(b) then type in the search string and click on "Search in File Contents" to trigger a second search and even then the second search ignores the file type and searches for the string in ALL files types in the given folder........

View 5 Replies View RelatedIt's really annoying that when you connect two computers to a WiFi AP and try to copy files between them it takes ages to copy anything and is slow beyond any reason. Even when I connected one of them via wire it's still terribly slow and even freezes from time to time. One of the PCs is XP the other runs 7 Ultimate. I already disabled that thing that checks for connection errors or something but still no joy.

I have an HP530 notebook with standard features and 2GB RAM. The system comes with a bulit in Windows Vista Home edition. For past few months the system has a painfully slow shutdown, in which has taken from 30 minutes to 9 hours to shutdown after i pressed the shutdown button on the start menu. But lately, since last few weeks, upon pressing shutdown, the system gets in to the logging off mode and never shuts down. I have left it for around 12hours one day and it did not finish logging of. I now have to manually give it a hard reboot by pushing down the power button. Is this a known problem or is there any knows solution to this problem.

I have vista basic and windows media player(v11) is slow as crap. after the window appears it'll take about 20 seconds to load the media that's available(just to get it to a point where it'll respond. then after I select something it lags for about 10-20 seconds and then a 'media changing...' message appears at the bottom left and it'll be about 20 seconds to play that file. so from start to wmp playing something takes up to a minute. wmp11 on my xp puter(512mb hyperthreaded) blows wmp11 on my vista laptop(gig ram amd 64 x2) out of the water. is there something like some setting or something I can change to make things run faster? I like wmp11 and don't want to dl winamp.
View 9 Replies View Related1) Message rules has a mind of its own. I specify certain mail to be moved to certain folders as they come in - some rules work OK, but others the mail is placed in the wrong folder completely. Not sure yet if this is random or if there is a pattern to it.
2) it is very slow when I try to switch from one folder to another to view the new mail. I often go and browse the internet while waiting for the folder I have selected to finally 'appear'.
I'm also having issues with internet browsing, I tried switching to Mozilla (which has helped some) but still getting issues. Basically it will give me a '404 file not found' error on a website, even tho I the website IS there as I can check on my other computer. Other websites (like ebay) I can get the home page but any attempt to log in gives me "404 not found". I've now managed to get ebay working (either by Mozilla or also I added it to the trusted sites zone), but another website (again placed in my trusted zone) I cannot log in to and even tho I can now get the homepage, the page is just plain text links with no graphics or formatting.
i have such a problem: when i unplug the lan cable windows explorer applications take 40-45 sec to start! i have to wait that time to open any kind of file or folder however other external programs are not affect!
it's very strange but when it's already opened a folder or file and is not closed any other folder or file can be opened without taking these 45 sec, i mean they start normally! and that happens every time the lan cable is unplugged.
After powering on the computer, it literally takes 10-15 minutes to start loading windows. Once windows starts loading, everything is fine, and the computer runs beautifully. I'm thinking this has something to do with the bios, but don't know where to start. Once again, the computer stalls before windows even begins to load.

I have a printed screen for that icon, but i don't know how to post it! at the last time i have installed a 3 antiviruse programs but no result, but some times during the scaning the sysytem was stoped and a blue window (with error message talking about new hardware or software not compatible).
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy CPU will idle around 30%, and my memory will idle around 40%. I have 3.5GB of ram, and a dualcore 2.4GHZ cpu. I was checking windows update, and it says it cannot download any updates, and it's most recent check was on 9/9/2008. I tried manually downloaded the windows vista service pack 1, but it keeps failing and giving me error 80070026. Some people suggested I turn off things like real time protection, so I uninstalled my McAfee virus scan, and downloaded windows defender instead. I then disabled real time protection on the window's defender. Nothing else should have real time protection, so why can't I update?
View 4 Replies View RelatedFor the last few days my 'pc' (http://www.vistax64.com/) takes three and half minutes to load. I did have the windows update KB954430 installed around that time. All malware and virus scans come up clean. Could this update be the problem? It takes 90 sec. to get to the welcome screen, then the screen goes black untill the programs begin to load at 195 seconds. the loading of programs seems to be in a normal time frame.

I downloaded Windows Vista Upgrade Adviser and it said under Device Details Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family Intel Corporation. This device will not work in Windows Vista. For more information, please go to the device manufacturer's website, Windows Marketplace, or contact your retailer. I contacted the Manufacturer, and he said to update the BIOS, and if that doesn't work do a full system recovery. The Notebook is less then a week out of the box and we are not gamers. I did the BIOS upgrade, the usual cleaning and unchecked many items on start up and I still have to defrag every night. It is very slow to download and the performance degrades as the day goes on. I am wondering if the Message on Windows Vista Upgrade Adviser is a concern. I noticed when it told me to update other things and I did, it never showed that I did, after I uninstalled/reinstalled the program.

Printer is configured for sharing and is installed on both machines

Additional notes:
During printer setup on the Vista 32 machine, I attempted to install
additional 64x drivers, but could not locate them, so I skipped this step.
During printer setup on the Vista 64 machine, the shared printers were
identified successfully, and I added the network printer. I was not asked to
install drivers the way I have in the past when adding a local printer.
Printing using the shared printer on the local machine Vista 32 performs
with normal speeds. Printing from the network computer Vista 64 using the
shared printer installed on Vista 32 is extremely slow. Even typing in print
job changes in the print dialog window takes 30 seconds or so for each key
stroke to register a response onscreen.
I just bought a new laptop a Dell XPS 1330, with Vista. And it is slow in launching everything. Once I'm in a program, it's usually okay, but it takes 5-10 seconds just to open the start menu, or switch between programs, or open a program is more like 20-30 seconds. It's even slower if I'm coming out of sleep mode, it never gets faster, I always have to boot even though I see nothing in the task manager. Is this the way it is supposed to be, and if not, how can I tell if this is a Vista problem or the laptop? My cpu runs at about 3% capacity and my ram is around 50 when no applications are open.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Vista x64 Ultimate was fast at first, but now after around 6months it has been slower. I have cleaned all Vista components and uninstalled unnecessary softwares/games. My HDD has 70% space remaining and its defragged. I have fast AVG antivirus and when I try to open a new folder, let's say my documents folder, it opens it fast but its all blank white and it keeps loading for like 3-5 seconds and then the contents show up. What's wrong? I expect an immediately folder content showing up especially when I have 3.55 GHz quad core and 8800 GTX T_T

Tools-> manage add-ons-> enable or disable add-ons
under enabled section look for "SSVHelperClass"(java plugin add-on) and highlight then click disable button.
Restart IE and you could see the difference.
Since my CPU is 1333, if I install DDR-2 800 rams, my ratio will be 5:4 or something like that.
1. Will my rams slow down to the FSB of the CPU?
2. If yes, what is the point in installing faster rams if they are slowing down to the FSB of the CPU?
3. If there is a benefit, what is it?
4. If rams are faster, do they somehow increase the performance of the graphics cards? (For, both ATI and NVIDIA make use of the system ram Hyper Memory and Turbo Cache)
5. Wouldn't it be effected by CPU's FSB? Lets say you have a DDR-4 graphics card, and your rams are DDR-2 800, rams are slower than the card, and CPU is slower than both of them.
I purchased my system (Laptop, dual core HP Paviolion dv6700) and installed vista home premium in December 2008. In the beginning system's performance was good but now (within 6 months) it starts so slow. What may be the problem.
