Network & Internet... Extremely Slow
Mar 6, 2009
I am very PC-Challenged when it comes to Networking & Internet and I have 2 problems at the office that you may be able to help me with. We have a small business package from AT&T (used to be bellsouth), one of those lines if a dedicated ADSL broadband, each line has a filter and we also have a Netopia ADSL router (motorola 3347-02-1006L) + linksys Gigabit 8 port switch.
There is 1 server (Windows 2000 Server OS w/SP4) and 3 workstations running XP Pro w/SP3 (2GB's of Ram all up to date with drivers and MS updates... I make sure of that). The server sits very close to my workstation as I have a KVM switch to adjust or make changes on it and to utilize only 1 monitor + kb/mouse. This is the first issue we have: (Gibabit Ethernet adapters on workstations)
One of my partners claims that if my computer is off, the software we use to sell our products runs very fast on his computer but, as soon as I turn on my workstation and I load the software, his speeds show significant downtime (slowness?). Again, not being very knowledgeable at networking I find this to be annoying but illogical at the same time

can I speed up my browsing on the internet? I know some sites are slower than others but, as of late, the internet seems to slow down to a crawl yet, when I do the speed test, I end up scoring higher or just where I am supposed to be at. I only use Avast as my A.V. & Spyware + Windows Firewall, no proxies. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.

My laptop has gotten so slow and I dont know whats causing it and would like to know how to fix it without having to send it away to get fixed (im too skint). I have LOADS of space left, barely anything installed, and ive no idea on what is causing this problem. Ive tried using CCleaner to search for viruses and to clean the laptop up but it said there were none found.

I bought a PC with Windows Vista Home Premium, 32bit, Norton McAfee AV included.
Specs: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5 GHz, 4 GB Ram, Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT.
First time I started it up It worked fine. Then I installed some programs (two games, a DVD media player, MSN Messenger).
The first few times I restarted the PC it was fine, but then after Windows Vista installed the Updates it rebooted and now it reboots EXTREMELY slow. And this on the first day!
It takes at least 10 minutes at the Bios-Screen and then when it is done there it slowly (another 5 min at least) to start windows.
After start-up everything works fine.
What should I do? Did I do something wrong during an install?
I neve had such problems with XP, although removing McAfee AV really quickened the start up (not the initial Bios Booting though) whern I had XP.

I'm a new Vista user and I've been struggling with extremely slow file copies between my Vista 64 Home Premium SP1 system and my XP SP3 system. I've searched and searched and tried a number of suggestions in posts that I have found. None have worked. I'm running a Wireless G (54mbps) network. My Internet access from both system is very fast (FiOS 20mbps download), so no issues there.
When I say extremely slow I'm talking less than 200 KBps. I get the same slow response using Explorer and Robocopy. I have disabled autotuning and RSS with these commands.
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

I am using vista without sp1. It takes about 6 minutes to extract a 900kb file. This is consistant with any zip file I try to extract. Another example was a file that was 1.7mb which took almost 30 minutes. I do not use any 3rd party programs currently for dealing with zipped files and this was a clean vista install. I thought maybe there was a coflict with the file being virus scanned as it was extracting. I was using AVG but I have it disabled so that it doesn't launch at startup. Please note that is not the most current version of AVG designed for vista. I recall this being a problem even before I installed AVG antivirus however this may still be some part of the issue. I wanted to check for other suggestions before I completely dumped my virus program

I've recently "clean install" Vista SP1 Home Premium to replace XP on my Dell Desktop; it's working but start up and shut down are extremely slow. I have a new laptop with same Vista SP1 version but it's much faster on power up and down. By the way, I have CA virus program on the Desktop, but McAfee on the laptop. One major difference between two computers is that I do have MSOffice Bussiness 2007 with Outlook and using the outlook on the desktop but I am using Windows Mail on the Laptop

I just cant' seem to get search to work worth a damn in Vista. Files that I know I have Vista doesn't find and it is extremely slow. I'm not a computer expert by any stretch, but I never had trouble with using search in XP.
I do like much about Vista, just need a search feature that doesn't search for stuff like my kids would. Anyone point me to a program that works with Vista and is safe to use?

my internet is really slow, downloading at 15 KB/s instead of 150 KB/s. My housemate uses the same wireless router and his connection is fine. I initially thought it was due to 1 of the 8 vista updates that auto-installed when i first rebooted, but after uninstalling them, and also trying a system restore, internet was still slow.

The other day IE 7 was running very slow. It took over 10 minutes to load a web page. I only found out the it would actually load the web site because I left I IE running while I used another computer to search the web of answers. whe I returned the web page was loaded. But if I tried to click on anything on the page it would not load for a long time. I thought that the network was not functioning. But I was able to install the current updates with no problems. The antivirus updates worked normally. I could ping www.excite.com or www.usatoday.com with no problems.
I also noticed that the antivirus program would hang and not start scanning the memory. If I used task manager to end the process it would cause the antivirus process to go to the next step and I could tell it to scan the disk drives. But it would never start. I tried to reboot but had the same problem. I finally rebooted into safe mode with the network. At this point the network worked and the antivirus also worked. I did a virus scan and it found nothing. I then rebooted the system and now everything seems to be working.

Everything seems fine except that the network downloads seem terribly slow. On my XP laptop using the same connection, speeds are at around 1000 kbps. On Vista download speeds are more like 100kbps even though uploads are at 800kbps. I have tried updating drivers, disabling auto-tuning, etc. I don't have any anti-virus s/w like Mcafee or Norton. Vista's network diaganostics doesn't seem to detect any problem, but did change TCP/IP MTU settings.

Everytime i boot my pc, my network is listed as "identifying" for about a minute, is there a way to make my pc remember instead of having to do it everytime i boot up, im sure when i first installed vista, it didnt last as long. Also, this happens when resuming from sleep, but after about 30 seconds disconnects completely for another 30. Im thinking that when i killed some services, one has caused vista to start doing this

Last Thursday my pc downloaded and installed the latest set of updates and since then the Internet speed has been sluggish at best and non-existant at worst.
I contacted my ISP and they did all their tests and announced that the signal was good and I might have a virus, so I got a bit paranoid and ran scan after scan (after the nightmare of trying to get the latest updates). I ran these with Zone Alarm Extreme and Spyware Doctor (but not together) and all the results were clean.
So I'm wondering if the latest Updates are to blame; one of the kids' laptops has exactly the same problem (he uses a router while I use a cable) and he downloaded the updates at the same time.
Interestingly the other kid's laptop seems to be untouched, but he has 32 bit Vista as opposed to our 64 bit, and it appears that we're all using different browsers (IE8, Mozilla and Chrome)

I got my internet speed slower and limited! I dunno how, but it just change very drastically. Why i just know that is that my roomate, use his own laptop but he has an internet speed 8 times faster!! He use Win XP on his laptop. It happen when i installed a McAfee Enterprise 8.7i in my laptop. Before the installation progress, my Internet speed is as fast as my roomate does. But it suddenly happen like that and i got system restore but it useless. So, my question is, how can i got my internet speed to normal.

I have a fairly typical home wireless network. My main desktop on IP 192.168.1.2 is connected by ethernet to my router. My laptop is wirelessly connected and has IP 192.168.1.3. My desktop is running Apache/MySql with a local web in htdocs/myweb. If I access the local web from my laptop using the IP address as it's very fast, but if I access using the computer name it is unbearably slow - every page load takes forever. What's the explanation for this, and can it be fixed? I am going to be installing this system for a local charity and they won't want to (shouldn't need to) be typing IP addresses.

Been running Vista x64 for a while with no problems at all ( yes...honestly!!! ) with a Quad Core and 4Gb ram and an internet connection that was as good as I was expecting. A few months back, though, things went downhill very suddenly! Now, it takes 20 minutes plus just to open some websites, and download speeds have dropped to virtually nothing. I am talking dialup speeds on a 2Mb line. Model is a Belkin wireless router, but I am connected to it by cable since the PC is right by the phone line. I have 2 other PC's in the house ( both running XP wirelessly ) One is temporarily offline due to other issues... but the other is connecting normally with no speed problems. I have done the 'google' thing, and disabled the auto-tuning facility, with no noticable improvements............................

I've had vista for around 10 months and never really had a problem with the internet but in the last week I've noticed it is running really slowly. No explaination it just runs slow, really slow. I have AVG, stopped running that, I've rolled back recent windows updates, I've done a system restore to last week. My network card has a greyed out rollback button so can't do that.
Also I've ran some speed tests and I get around 250k download and a 690k upload which again is strange, but I've ran the same test on a eeePC running linux and a laptop running XP and get 1mb download with a 690k upload.

I have switched from a Sony Vaio FE41S (2GB/667MHz - Windows XP) to a Dell Inspiron 1545 (3GB - Windows Vista Basic). On my Vaio, I can watch things online such as Sky Player online and TVCatchup, however, on my brand new Dell, the pictures on these websites moves horrifically slow, maybe 1 frame every 10 or 20 seconds, and slows down my entire computer. As soon as I close these things, my computer runs completely fine again. Also, my downloads go between 100-200kb, whereas on my Vaio, they go between 700 and 1,100kbps
I located a few of these problems - McAfee, which I deleted, and this helped to speed up my computer in general, however, I still have not been able to use such websites. I have tried many of the fixes suggested online, such as the various netsh things and getting rid of phishing on IE. I don't have any antivirus anymore and I've checked for things such as viruses and malware.

is it plausible to see a list with all applications that use the network/internet? this because my pc is very quick when the internet is off, but when I start my pc and the internet is on, than it is very slow (for example: I had to wait 30 minutes before I could log in on this site!!!). it's not because of any firewall/antivirus/antispam/antispyware program, because I turned them off.
(it started on the 7th this month, when I found out there were some updates from vista. I even couldn't download them, because everything crashed: desktop, windows update, taskbar, microsoft word, MSN. Since than it happens all the time there is an internetconnection)

I somehow fixed my problem before, but then I reformatted my laptop which I regret now. I've downloaded all the vista upgrades and even tried turning off my firewall. But no matter if I'm using Firefox or IE7 it takes waay too long to load a page. I googled this and I've tried doing the "netsh interface disable" command but that doesn't really work either.

I'm rather experienced with computers and know its nothing of the obvious. I recently built a new rig, my motherboard is the asus striker II extreme which has dual gigabit lan and the ai teaming technology. I did a fresh install of vista ultimate x86 on the new hard drive, everything running fine and i was achieving maximum internet speed. However after running windows update i noticed the download speed is terrible, approximately 25kb/s on average and i am capable of speeds of up to 650kb/s. After updating all my drivers, running the computer in safe mode, turning off all security and eventually resorting to using a download accelerator my problem persisted. So i thought it must be the update, i wiped the hard drive clean and did a fresh install of vista again, however, before running windows update my speed had actually worsened to around 6kb/s and around 50 or so using a download accelerator.
I had the same OS on my previous setup, same router too, and it worked just fine. I have tried a connection using the wireless pci-e card i had on my previous setup and the dual rj45 cable to my router and even tried it using just one cable. I really can't get my head around whats going on. If anyone has any ideas or experience with this problem, Problem solved! Intels annoying pushpin engineering once again has proven itself to be a ridiculous method of installation. Reapplied some arctic silver 5 and remounted the pins after much effort bending pins into place. Internet speeds are once again optimal!

ever since I started using Windows Vista I've had a low internet download speed (not the amount that I'm paying for). I know this isn't a problem with my ISP because on my other computer that has Windows XP, the internet connection is just fine.
I've tried the following tutorials:
Auto Tuning - TCP/IP receive level
QoS Bandwidth Reserve Limit
Neither of them have resolved my problem. My download speed is the only problem, the upload speed is "normal". I'm paying for 8Mbps but I get 0.5-2Mbps on my Vista system. I have my modem directly connected to my computer, through one of the two Ethernet ports on my computer.

my startups have recently slowed down. I have disabled stuff from the startup selection, and still had no luck. I think the problem lies with the network connection. It seems to be taking a while before it connects to my router. not sure why this started happening usually used to be alot quicker.

I support about 200 XP users and, now, about 8 Vista Business users on our 2003 AD network. 100% of the Vista clients are unacceptably slow accessing/copying/moving files from shares on the network. Even opening a network drive pauses for 30 secs. to as much as 2 minutes to populate the window with the file and folder names, whereas this is instant with XP clients.

I'm running build 5384 on a Dell Precision 370 and a Precision 380. I've tried 64 and 32bit versions but I keep having the following problem: Basically I can access the internet but very, very slowly. Most pages just time out.
