Windows 7....and Windows Mail Still Be Running

Oct 17, 2009

I will be doing an InPlace Vista to Windows7 Upgrade. Currently using Windows Mail which is part of Vista. After the Upgrade to Windows7, and since I assume Vista will be replaced by Windows 7, will Windows Mail still be running? Will it run under Windows7? Or, will Windows Mail no longer be an appll that will be present on my PC and I will need to Install Windows LIVE Mail?

Download Cannot Be Completed While Windows Mail Is Running

May 8, 2008

she is trying to download Trend PC-cillin virus control program. she has only until May 11 to get it done or she will lose her $49.95. she keeps getting a message that the download cannot be completed while Windows Mail is running. We have everything we can think of; called Trend, was referred to Microsoft and cannot find a thing there to help. How do we get Windows Mail to quit, or shutdown, so the download can be finished? She doesn't even use Windows mail and cannot even find the listing for it on Programs, or in the Add/Delete list in the Control Panel.

I've had a problem for a while now. Every time I open Windows Mail up, or the news groups, I get a message saying Windows mail isn't my default mail program, and asks if I want it to be. I click yes every time, but I will still get this message when I open Windows Mail again the next day. Everything's works OK after I click this message. No other errors or anything.

Windows 7: Windows Mail Versus Windows Live Mail

Oct 6, 2009

What, if any, inferences can be drawn from the fact that there are typically three times more posts about Windows Mail (WM) than Windows Live Mail (WLM). Could it be that:

(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?

(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?

(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?

My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. I am cross-posting this to both newsgroups and suggest that replies go to WM as it has the larger following.

SP2 Crashed Not Running Windows

Aug 1, 2009

I installed vista sp2 yesterday and now my laptop won't start. it offers two options, start in repair mode or start normally. I have an 18 month old Toshiba Equiium running vista home P 32 bit. If I start normally, the microsoft logo comes up and then the screen blips blue momentarily then it goes off. If I run the repair, it scans for faults, then prompts to run a system restore. I take this option and then it takes many minutes to attempt repairs - ultimately ending with 'windows cannot repair..."

there is a log with lots of 0x0 type errors notices (which are meaningles to me) I can't even get to the point where I could elect to restore to last best save or whatever. I have all my docs backed up on a portable HD but I cannot get past this failed repair message.

Windows Calendar Can Not Running

Apr 22, 2008

I don't see a Calendar group. I have had several occasions when Windows Calendar did not pop up with appointments until a day or two had gone by and it then informs me that the appointment or whatever is x days overdue. Not very helpful obviously. My computer was on and logged in at least once on the days of the appointment. Another problem. Because of the afore-mentioned problem I put Windows Calendar in my Startup folder so I would be forced to see the calendar when I first log in. I have had a couple of crashes now apparently related to this. Once the calendar wouldn't close and the second time the computer froze after displaying the calendar; I was forced to do an unstructured shutdown; and this in turn generated raid 1 disk problems that took hours to be resolved.

Running SFC: Cannot Boot Up Into Windows

Sep 10, 2009

I like SFC alot and it has solved a lot of problems I have had in the past with my Vistax64 machine. Latest problem is windows won't boot, can't restore, can't repair, can't safe mode, can't go to last known good... If i try to run SFC at the command prompt, i get a message that I have a pending repair, and need to reboot. However, since I cannot boot up into windows, this remains always. Is there a way to work via the command prompt to stop this pending repair, so that I can try the SFC to resolve problems I am experiencing?

Windows Calendar Is Not Running

May 27, 2008

Haven't gotten any response so I'll try again. A serious problem I am having with Vista calendar is that it is frequently not alerting me to appointments/events. Sometimes days will go by and abruptly I'm presented with a list of past due items. There may be a "good" reason for this happening but I can't imagine what it is as I log into the account associated with the calendar at least once a day. I have been running with the option "Reminders should show when Windows Calendar is not running" set. Also, is there any way to truly share a calendar between users on the same machine? I've used the sharing options but always end up with copies of the calendar and they don't update themselves when another user makes a change.

Windows Defender Running Don't

I was wondering...can you have something like Windows Defender running, as well as Spybot and a anti-spyware program that's part of an internet security suite, all at the same time? Would they conflict with each other like anti-virus programs? Or do they work in harmony with one catching spyware the other's don't?

Running A 2nd OS With Home Edition (Windows 98?)

I've lost a magazine I had that talked of having dual OS's. I'd liketo put Windows 98 on my Toshiba laptop if it can be done. Followingvarious problems I have put Vista and all the Updates on 3 times now,so I don't want any risks. I read a little bit about Virtual PC and wondered if there were other options. Also, what happens about drivers? Will, in 98 mode, the laptop use the Vista drivers?

Windows Update - Service Is Not Running

Dec 12, 2009

There is no update, all I get is an error msg "Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." needless to say, restarting makes no difference. The update history is completely blank and in the meantime I cannot update anything including security essentials and the clock, most of the sites I try to assess tell me the certification is out of date and I can't send any mail.

Running V home premium 32 on a laptop which, to date, has been no trouble at all. The only thing I've done recently is take it apart to defluff the fans, and everything else is running fine. I have problems with IE and Firefox.

Not Capable Of Running Windows Aero

The advisor recommended that I chose Home Basic, but I would be able to run Premium, just without the Aero graphics. So my first choice is, Basic or Premium (lacking few features)? My second choice, is after I decide which version, whether I should get the upgrade package or shell out for the full version, just incase?

Running Process Temporarily Freezes Windows 64 Bit

Apr 17, 2009

I have a serious problem - I have a certain software product (let's call it X) which works fine on all 32bit versions, but freezes up Multi-core 8 GB Vista Ultimate machine, when performing a certain actions (let's say, filling the spread sheet with data). After this program is done, Vista unfreezes and everything back to normal, but during the run, I cannot bring up any other window - not even a Task Manager (I can move the mouse, though) - clicking on the windows tabs does not do anything. I have 2 monitors and I can see Task Manager on a second one, if I bring it up before X starts to work and I see that CPU load never reaches 100%. But I cannot do anything with the PC until X is done working.

Windows Update Kills Windows Mail On Windows 7

May 12, 2010

If you have installed Windows Mail on a Windows 7 computer, yesterday's update contains a KB978542 patch which changes msoe.dll so it won't run on Windows 7. I had warned about these types of issues when Win7 was first released. Microsoft claims it was done for security=20 reasons, see To get it working again, replace the new non-working copy of msoe.dll in Windows 7 with a copy of the new patched version of msoe.dll from a Vista machine.=20

Note: I ran into permissions issues when trying to delete the = non-working msoe.dll, so rather than fighting that, I renamed the Win7 Windows Mail directory to "Windows Mail-X", then I copied and pasted the Windows Mail directory from the Vista machine. I suspect that Windows Mail will = become less and less compatible with Win7 as time goes along.=20
