i just noticed that my Volume Shadow Service is disabled and stopped. I know its used to create shadow copies of files and folders, but why is it turned off? Do i need to enable and start this service or its ok if its off? i never use shadow copies but still do i need it?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI’m trying to shadow copy Volumes C and E to the separate internal HDD Volume D. I understand VSS requires Dynamic Disks. Diskmgmt.msc (command prompt/administrator) shows all drives as basic type. Right clicking on any of them does not offer ‘Conversion to Dynamic Disk’, and Properties don’t show a Shadow Copies tab.
1. How do I convert from Basic to Dynamic disks on my mobile computer?
2. Do both source and target drives have to be Basic type?
My on screen volume meter no longer appears when i increase, decrease or mute my volume. I've gone to Dell QuickSet and it is not disabled. So how do I fix my problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter using perfmon to determine what applications were hogging my internet connection at 2am every morning I found that AeLookupSvc and Appinfo were the culprits. After looking up what they did and deciding that it would be ok to disable them (!!) I did so, and now any activity that requires administrative privileges either does not respond, or returns the error "C:Windowssystem32services.msc The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. Perfmon, services.msc, windows firewall, system restore, accessing my registry, none of it works. I can still run programs and serf the net, but anything that needs admin priv will not work. I guess what I need is some kind of workaround, I need to enable Appinfo without administrator privileges so I can get my administrator privileges back. Thanks for any help you can provide, Tim **SKIP the FOLLOWING if you just want to help for said issue** Now time for the RANT: Jesus I have never been so frustrated! I have never had a prolonged experience with something so clunky, so ridiculous, and coming highly touted from one of the largest corporations on the planet! This is only one (and the worst) of the many problems I've had. While playing warcraft I'll suffer from framerate issues with a powerful dual core until the cpu's decide "hey, he's got 6 fps, lets stop whatever we were doing and help him out" and my framerates will jump to 60. I spent an hour in the registry working on my latency issues, I spent 30 minutes in the registry fixing a fallout 3 console problem, svchost will decide to go surf the net in the middle of me doing something myself and lag the crap out of me. My computer has a mind of its own and rarely is it doing something I want to do too! If windows vista wiped my a$$ it would be a 47 step process and have to stop and ask my permission to ask my permission. I went to microsoft support for help, entered in my product i.d. in order to determine if I could get support help WITHOUT having to PAY $49, and it told me the number was for vista home premium 64 bit instead of the 32 bit I selected, well, ok, I went back and changed the option to 64 bit, re-entered the SAME exact i.d., it gave me a product i.d. format error......the same, copy/pasted i.d..... I went and did it two more times both ways including opening a new browser window laughing my ass off!!! Way to go microsoft! Your $230 billion dollar organization wants $49 from me to help me with your problems! I'm so glad I was so frustrated I laughed, otherwise my laptop would have traveled through the wall. ( I know, anger issues, but can you blame me?!?!) There's some more I could write if you're still reading, but my finger's are getting cold, I haven't typed this much since my senior design project.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWe are running an old CA program for our antivirus here at school. It is called inoculateIT. It has performed well for us, so we've never upgraded to their newer offerings. To install it, you use a remote install program located on the domain controller. I just bought the first Vista computer to try out here and upon trying to install this program, it cannot find the path. When this happened with XP, it was because the Windows firewall was turned on. I have turned it off in Vista and disabled the firewall service, but still get the same message. It shows up in the list of computers in the remote install program's browser just like it does in the active directory list. I just believe it has something to do with the security in Vista that is blocking it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedReviewing Services on my Vista Ultimate 64-bit machine I noticed that the DNS Client is disabled? I have a wireless router configured to the laptop and to the printer and have for some times been experiencing disconnection problems to the laptop and loosing the printer connectivity completely until I unplug the router, wait, and plug it back in--which will restore connectivity until the next time.
Shouldn't the DNS Client be enabled? Also noticed in Services I found HP Network Devices Support is set to Automatic (Delayed Start). Could this be what is causing the printer (C7280 All-in-One) to write so many (hundreds in days) .log entries in
WindowsTemp?
No sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)

4) Deleted the test folder from desktop and removed from recycle bin
5) Tried to restore a shadow copy, but none is available
What is wrong? I have Vista Ultimate (danish) no SP1 yet
Every time I print something out, a document, an email etc the text has a shadow. Its like the printer is out of line, (if there is such a thing) but ive no idea how to re-align it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista Business(Upgraded from XP using the Clean Install method). I have noticed that Local Disc ( C ) is showing 234GB free of 279GB. (2*150GB HDD in Raid O =279GB ) That is i have used 45GB. The significant amounts used are Programme files 1.85GB,Users 2.54GB,Wndows Vista 7.81GB......11.2GB in total. Windows Old which i deleted with exception of some required files shows 96KB When i goto Windows old.. Properties and open PREVIOUS VERSIONS there are 5 versions each of about 6.4GB that is 32GB in total..Total usage is therefore 11.2 + 32=43.2GB Roughly what HDD( C )is showing.. My question is how can i get rid of these SHADOW COPIES..SYSTEM RESTORE is turned off.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Recently I started having a strange problem with the backup. If I run a backup (either native Vista backup or the third party, like Acronis), the PC freezes almost immediately, and stays this way, so I have to manually restart it. The Vista native backup gives me this message: The creation of a shadow copy has timed out. The strange things about this are:
1. Everything worked fine for over a year, I don't know what triggered this change;
2. This happens only if the backup runs on schedule, I still can backup manually without any problems;
3. There are absolutely no records about this in the Even Viewer, like backup had never run.
it's a completely idiotic feature of Vista Home Premium (and maybe Basic too) System Restore relies on Shadow Storage - which MS also uses to provide "previous version" file capabilities in higher-end Vista systems. However, Vista is in fact still taking copies of ALL your files - thereby eating up space that you might reasonably have thought was solely for System Restore points. Result: ShadowStorage fills up very quickly and your restore points are dumped.

The User Profile Service service failed the login.
User profile cannot be loaded.
Just before the problem happened I was working to remove the Anti Virus Live virus from my laptop via the techsupportforum.com forum.
Two things I did within the hour of the problem happening are:
1. I ran the malware removal program OTL

Further details-I can and am able to login to Safe Mode I do not have a program called System Restore in the System Tools folder In Safe Mode I was able to change my password, but in normal mode I get the same error message I did windows updates and then tried to remove some of those updates, with only a few files that wouldn't allow me to delete them. Thank you for visiting my thread. If anyone has any ideas on how I can fix my problem it would be great to hear about them.
Also my Windows Search service does not start. When I try to start it, I get these errors in the event log:
1. "The Windows Search Service cannot open the Jet property store.
The content index server cannot update or access information because of a database error. Stop and restart the search service. If the problem persists, reset and recrawl the content index. In some cases it may be necessary to delete and recreate the content index. (0x8004117f)"
2. "The Windows Search Service has failed to created the new system catalog. Internal error <4,0x8004117f>."
I'm totally lost as how to solve this problem. I spent hours on the web trying to find a solution, with no luck sofar. Anyone here who has a clue how to solve this one?
currently i have been trying to backup my computer using complete backup on my windows vista ultimate but every time i try when i click the button it says
(X) The backup application could not start due to an internal Error:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424)
Please check your system configuration and try again.
I use Vista Ultimate 64.
For the past few weeks I've been having an issue with an Apple made service called "Bonjour Service". That service is used in several pieces of software including iTunes (which I do not use) but also some Adobe applications (Version Cue for example) and the font management utility I use which is Extensis Suitcase 11.0.1 for Windows.
Both Version Cue and Suitcase depend on the Bonjour Service to work and I have had no issues with it for months but recently, the Bonjour Service stopped working and would not start anymore. It now gives this error message when trying to start it:
"('Bonjour Service' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
My user account is an admin account so privileges is not an issue. I had made no changes to my system myself before the Bonjour service began to "refuse" starting but I remember that I installed a few Windows updates a couple days prior. My machine is always on and I don't re-boot everyday.
So I was wondering if anyone has heard of the issue and knows how I might fix it or if anyone can give me pointers on how I my start trouble shooting this and find what started preventing the Bonjour Service from starting. FWIW, the Windows Firewall is already off and turning off my anti-virus doesn't help (Eset NOD32).
It has been bugging me: why there are so few System Restore Points on my system (and on the one occasion I really neeeded it, only 1 which was too recent)[System = Vista HP laptop, 100GB disk, System Restore having private >11GB of its own disk space but 10GB still free, only C monitored]
Here's a partial answer that raises other questions...I ran Cmd "as Admin", typed "vssadmin List ShadowStorage" and noted it said the "used shadow copy storage space" is 10.871GB of the allocated 11.451... which would explain why I currently see only 4 restore points in System Restore...[wow... all the way back to 20 Feb] But I haven't been doing *that* much! How come Vista [HP] is eating ~2.5GB per restore point? Is it snapshotting the entire Windows system? Even in theory this is close to useless when Vista creates scheduled restore points once or twice a day (the 2 may have been an update install): since Vista doesn't need to be restarted that often it might be days before a problem is noted on restart... by which time any good restore points are gone. [In practice it was totally useless...] What's triggering restore point creation if there are no updates or applications installed/uninstalled?Is there any way it can be tweaked to gain a longer history... or, should I turn it off, reclaim the disk space and use Acronis' "Safe Zone" and/or rely on my external Acronis backups?
I often start a full backup and leave my computer, only to come back at
the end of the day to find that the backup failed:
"A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason:

Not sure what's going on. I look in the Event Viewer and I see two items:

I can't imagine that I'm low on resources since I closed all apps.
I am trying to get rid of system restore shadow copies on my Vista home premium. I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:
1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....
The output above shows space used on the C: drive by System Restore is 237.419 MB. The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. The advantage is gaining extra free space. If you are concerned with losing the previous restore points, wait until you do not need them anymore before reducing the allocated space. If you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista or running a clean install and will need extra space, consider reducing the space after installation has completed. It is not recommended to disable System Restore. Our new 20" HP Monitor (w2007) has built-in speakers situated on the back of the case. I've already set the audio output control to a full 100 on the taskbar. Been thinking about installing a free-standing set of small HP speakers instead. Would that make any difference? Wal-Mart sells a set that support Plug 'n Play for around $20, something I may try since fantastic sound isn't what I'm after. I'd just like to be able to hear the occasional DVD at something above a loud whisper during playback.

I want to have only one volume (C that includes the entire HDD. When I try to extend the current C: volume it is greyed out. How do I confiure the
entire drive as C: without losing any programs/data or reinstalling Vista?
I recently noticed that I have two icons for volume--one says realtek HD audio and the other says realtek HD audio manager. I have no idea what the difference is between these two items.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe audio volume on vista is too low. How can I increase the volume on Windows Vista. It doesn't matter what device (medium) using. Can not increase volume loud enough no matter what the format. Just got Vista pc few days back. Today, had to turn full volume on volume icon in start bar, as well as turn full up in windows media to hear a speech and not really hear good enough, or as would desire. Volume is quite low. (to note this is something I've always listened to with xp.) This is after yesterday realizing same thing on listening to music, is way too low.
Also, in start bar is the volume icon, which has just a single slider, where in xp we had volume and could adjust several things. Is there any way to get the full capability volume icon which gave us some 5 controls? Main question though, how do I increase volume on windows vista (home premium sp1?)
I've recently followed how to extend my Vista disk space using the Computer Management tool. But unfortunately, the Extend Volume is greyed out and is N/A. I also tried Paragon disk tool and it said "Not available in Vista 64-bit, use Recovery CD".

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista x64 with a 3ware 9650SE raid controller as a redundant raid5 data drive. I added a 4th 1TB harddrive, and I am trying to extend the volume to merge with the new space currently available. I can't seem to do that though because "Extend Volume" is greyed out, and I can't figure out what is wrong. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Attached are screenshots that may help.
