I read there is a performance boost with raid -0, could this be true? I am interested in setting up a 4 drive riad -0 in vista anythoughts? And will VistaBusimess Disk Manager use 4 drive in raid 0.
View 8 RepliesI have my old XP load on my C drive and Vista on the D drive. I'm ready to wipe out XP (I know lots of folks would go the other way) so I can create a mirror copy of Vista for fault tolerance. Before I enable RAID in the firmware, I'm thinking I need to format the C drive. However the Disk Management utility has the format command grayed out for the C drive. It shows up as:
Disk 0: C: NTFS, Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)
My D drive is: Disk 2: D: NTFS, Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary
Partition)
What is the proper way to wipe out C so I can create my RAID mirror?
I want to have two flash drives working in like a raid mirror.I can plug in one of the usb flash drives and get say a new E:, but of course if I plug in the second one I get a f:
Is there a way to have windows vista (or 7 I guess) configured so that the two flash drives are just the E: and they are working in a raid mirror config via software ?
I'm attempting to set up a new PC with RAID 0 using Vista x64 Home Edition Premium. However, I'm having no luck. (Hours of scouring various forums have yielded nothing as well.) I've set up 2 RAID 0 partitions across my 2 SATA drives using Intel's Matrix Storage Manager. (CTRL + I thing at boot). When I load up Vista for installation, it recognizes the partitions but refuses to let me install on them. I get an alert at the bottom of the screen saying that my "...computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."
I'm not completely clear on what this means, but after entering BIOS, I have my drive configuration set to configure SATA as RAID. Attempting to continue the installation yields something like "Windows cannot find a drive that is suitable for installation" (not verbatim, sorry.) I have downloaded all of Intel's drivers for my motherboard and have even hunted down the RAID driver for my HDDs. I put all of those files onto a USB drive, but Vista doesn't seem to recognize any of them.
Shortly after installing Vista SP1 I have started to get message "a drive in Raid 0 is failing". This sounds bad. I have tried running checkdisk on my hard drive but it does not show any problems. If I reinstall the OS from scratch, will it fix the problem? Or is this a hardware problem?

Just a quick thought, As I plan to use it in a Raid 0 set up do I need to make any adjustments to my bios or install the JMicron drivers so Vista can utilise the raid as well as my other three, non raid, sata drives. I've looked at the manual and doeesn't mention any thing about it. Or is it simply plug it in and forget.

I should have x-posted instead of multi-posting, but I thought I'd get an answer in the other group.Anyway...I have a mirrored setup on a Promise RAID built-in controller. One disk wentbad. I removed it. The remaining disk continues to operate normally - fornow. However, I get a "critical" warning from the RAID controller every time I boot - but it does succeed without issues.
I would like to eliminate this warning and continue with only one disk.Preferably in a single-disk non-RAID config. But, whatever.How can I do that? Do I have to rebuild from scratch? What happens if I use [ctrl-F] to enter the RAID management and simply "delete the array"? Will I be able to reconfigure to boot from that remaining disk or will it require to be rebuilt completely as a single IDE?
I need to know what would be the best optition for top performance.

It said in raid settings this is for top performance. 64KB for the other not sure what it was. Also should i remove the RAID and then do a full format then low level or just leave the RAID as it is. And what should i make it RAID 0 RAID 1 or RAID 5 for performance. I'm a gamer.
I have Vista Ultimate x86 on my main harddrive. Yesterday I tried to dual boot the beta of Windows 7 on my secondary harddrive which is clean. During the final steps of the installation, I had an electrical shortage. My installation of Windows 7 was incomplete on my second harddrive. Now when I try to open my computer, booting into Vista on my main drive is very slow and has limited functionality. Opening "My Computer" and the Vista disk manager does not work so I cant format the harddrive in question. However when I disconnect that harddrive from my computer, Vista loads fine. So if anyone can give me solutions for formatting my harddrive without having to log into Vista that would be great.
View 7 Replies View Relatedi just bought My Book Essential 1 TB today... and when i got home i plug it and it works just fine but its bothering me that the HDD type is FAT32 .. so i format it and try to change it to NTFS.. but somethings happen and boom the electric in my apartment was down... and so when the electric back i want to format it again but i can't... there drive is detected but with no space detail... it says "Windows can't format Drive H: - Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.
For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... I havent tried 3rd party software and i havent tried it on other computer (don't have other computer right now) and WDC didnt give live cd for formatting because all of them was in the drive... though i already redownload it but the program is useless..
I recently fresh installed my Vista Premium x86 on my homebuilt, and I had all my data backed up on my flash. When I plug it in, Vista dings like normal, but it is not in Windows Explorer and Disk Management. The Drive did have some Code 10 Device Cannot Start problems, but those are worked out when I disabled it and re-installed the driver, and the drive DOES show up in 'Safely Remove Hardware' and the Device Manager. I kinda diagnosed that it doesnt have a Drive Letter assigned, due to the flash drive working in my XP x64 dual-boot.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying bring-up a new SATA Hard Drive through PCIe to SATA AHCI Host Card. We find that Vista recognized the AHCI Controller and it shows up in the Device Manager. It successfully allocates the memory and IRQ, and says that the Device is working properly. But the HDD is not recognized. When we look at the PCIe analyser, we see that the OS is continuously polling the AHCI Interrupt Status Register (Addr: 0x08). This register is reading 0x0 all the time.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I've installed vista, the installation have set the boot manager to be on a different disk than the the boot loader. Now, if I want to remove the hard drive containing the boot manager, the system won't load, which is reasonable given these conditions, nonetheless I DO want to remove this hard drive and still be able to boot, therefore I've searched and queried everywhere and done the following: Physically disconnected the hard drive with the boot manager on it (d and boot with the Vista DVD to run startup repair -> this didn't help, the startup repair found the operation system but didn't recognize any problem, when trying to boot the system would not load, the error I'm getting when booting is disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart.
(reconnected d:, and system boots flawlessly, then) I've manually changed the boot manger (and memory diagnostic, the only other bcd entry on the d: drive) location with bcdedit to c:, and now bcdedit (and VistaBootPro) show the boot manager (and memory diagnostic) in the c: drive, HOWEVER, if I try to boot from that drive I get the same error: disk read error.................
I thought I had been able to make a backup of a Vista Ultimate System on a Raid0 array (C: partition using the standalone Acronis True Image 10 boot disk) and copy it back to a non-Raid disk. For some reason Vista will not boot correctly and the Vista boot disk Repair Option thinks about it for 5 minutes or so and then says it can't fix the problem. I know I have done this trick with WinXP and I thought I had done it with Vista. I know I can do the save/restore routine (Raid0 to Raid0) with the Acronis standalone software. what I have to do to get a Raid0 version of Vista Ultimate transferred to a non-Raid disk using all the same hardware.
I have the Vista Ultimate System on a network so I can backup to a different controller and hard drive, delete the array, reformat using Partition Magic 8.0 and restore. The only reason I am trying to do this trick is because the SATA controller on the motherboard does not support Raid Arrays and SATA DVD Drives together...and...I want to install multiple SATA DVD Drives on this system.
I am using Vista Home Premium 32-bit on a Compaq laptop, i have a Fujitstu MHW2160BH PL ATA disk drive device. It has been quite tempermental over the last few weeks but now it will not open at all, I have uninstalled and re-installed the device but it still won't work.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a San Disk 4GB Cruzer Micro thumb drive with U3 on it. I had orginally gotten the drive when I had a HP that was running Windows XP. It worked fine on that computer. Well the XP machine took a crap and was replaced with a Compaq that is running Vista Home. The drive was NOT inserted with the HP crashed. Now when I insert the Thumb drive into a usb port it lights up and shows in "my computer" as an Audio CD with a drive letter of "H". The Launchpad does not start and the password screen does not come up either. The directory of the drive only shows 1 file (which does not open) and there was aprox 1000 files on it before. San Disk has been no help and I have not been able to find anything on the internet that has helped. Oh did I mention that I have very little computer knowledge, .
I normally would not be to ticked about this but all the files on the drive are family photos, photo's of hunting trips etc. I know my fault for not saving them to a CD and relying on a thumb drive but I thought they were more reliable than this. Here is a little twist, I have another Sandisk thumb drive that was used with the XP machine but this one works on the vista machine! I havent been able to try the drive that I am having trouble with on another XP machine as I dont have access to one (work switched all computers to vista). I dont know if it is a formatting issue or what but I can not figure it out.
I would like to change the "Disk Drive Policies" (see attached screenshot). If I check the box "Enable write caching on disk" and "Enable advanced performance" and then click ok and after that I reopen the "Policies" again evrything is like it was before I made the changes. Is there anything I can do in order that the changes I make will be accepted and won't jump back to the previous settings?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Vista Ultimate (64-Bit) on my Qosmio G35-AV660. Problem is this, it is now seeing both my HDDs as one in a "Logical Drive 0" and "RAID-0" array. Instead of 2-120gb drives I now have one 214gb drive. I want to return to separate HDDs "C" "D" w/out RAID. I have tried booting from the Vista installation disc, and when it asks for raid driver, I install and it still only shows the "one" drive and not separate drives.
I also went into the bios screen at start up and it shows the separate drives with same RAID array, and wasn't able to change it. I tried the changes available, but it continues to reset itself and boot normally. I understand I will need to reinstall the os after RAID is removed. If I remove the second drive while doing a clean install, will it force it back to non raid, and then I can reinstall the second drive after the new install? Or is there a better way?
It's my new Sony ebook reader. It works fine on my old XP pc but not my Vista Home Premium laptop. I don't know how reformatting an actual reader would affect the device since every one at the Sony forum has only reformat their memory from the actual reader that has a reformat memory, you lose your books but all the Sony applications that runs the reader are still intact. Since I got this error, I've reformatted via the actual reader and still every time I plug my reader in my USB port, I get this error. I'm scared if I say yes that all the applications that makes the reader works will be wiped out. Here is the thread in the Sony Reader Forum of them trying to help me. It does not ask if I want to open it in Windows media player or any other program. So I tried opening all my programs manually, but still it does not show that anything is in the drive.

View 9 Replies View RelatedRecnetly I noticed I had a 4th hard disk drive instead of 3. The strange thing is that I can't remember adding one.. I just got my 2 internal hard disk drives and 1 external hard disk. But now it shows 4. Also, when I try to open this 4th hard disk it gives an acces denied error message. Also, I'm unaible to scan the hard disk. For my other hard disks, when I right click, I got the option to scan for virus. This option isn't in the list when I right click this new station. Here are the menu list by right clicking on the HDD's.

I went to my drives to view what was going on and I get this message: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. Basically, i can't recall the day it 'disappeared' but it was over 4/5 days ago i think. I've rebooted a number of times, tried the DVD drive tutorial thing from windows, and ran a few scans and still nothing.
However, my device manager tells me that its working correctly. Great. I dont think i've done anything differently, i first noticed it was acting up when i converted and burnt a dvd onto a disk and the drive wouldnt open, so i had to reboot, it opened and then there was nothing on the disk, and from then on its gone........
