Viruses: Possible That A Virus Can Infest Vista
Jul 1, 2008
I have learnt that Vista has been build on the Framework, therefore, no thread leaves an application domain to enter another application domain. So, isn't it what a virus does?, then how is it possible that a Virus can infest Vista?,

I am using vista home premium with a 64-bit operating system. I have Avast free antivirus installed. I started getting messages from Vista Defender that my computer was being attacked by viruses, spyware and trojan horses. When I clicked "remove all" they wanted me to buy something. I restarted my computer and I am no longer getting the vista defender warnings, but I can't access several programs like windows media player, yahoo messenger etc.
Also, the icons for these programs disappeared from my task bar. When I try to launch these programs from the start menu I get a message that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I'm the only one that uses this computer.

"If your system is a Microsoft product and you have your 20 digit registration number, you can go to the Microsoft web site, and they will do a free scan and most likely remove any known virus such as Trojan win32.murlo." Is this true, and where would I find my 20 digit registration and what is the web site?

My grandson allowed the vista security virus on their PC I am trying to fix it. It blocked everything I did between using my Daughters laptop and gathering info from the internet I did get the PC Doctor downloaded (took forever) and installed on the infected PC then ran a scan only to find out that I had to purchase the tool to remove it. I did and the Pc worked fine or so I thought.
DD looked up lowes last night and now today it is again posessed it will not let me run system restore everytime I look up something on the internet it redirects me to stupid pages that have nothing to do with what i key in. so I am trying system restore and it wont open it tells me it is already running. This is a vista home basics I have no idea if it is 32 or 64.

basically my computer keeps freezing every now and then and a transparent screen comes up and at the top left of screen it says (not responding). I read somewhere it happens because of two anti-virus programmes on the computer? Can anyone shed any truth on this., I actually read it on the microsoft problems and answers page somewhere. If so - I have Windows Defender and AVG antivirus. I wondered which i should get rid off.?

My friend has a Hewlett Packard desktop computer that is approximately 3 years old. She is running Windows XP. All she has is the repair installation disk. She let one of her teenage grandsons get on her computer this past weekend and now she has 2 viruses that her security program says can't be removed. She originally had 3 viruses but the one that was located in the registry seems to be gone. The other two are both located in CSIDL_SYSTEMuac*.dll. She chose to quarantine the files, but every time she scans it picks them up again. She is using SecureIt which is provided through our ISP. She can boot her computer but she can not get online. We live in a rural community and the nearest computer repair shop is 100 miles away. Based on everything she's described to me I think her best bet is a reinstall of the OS. I'm asking someone to help me help her. Would a repair installation get rid of these viruses?

I just have to ask this, since I think I've read somewhere that 64-bit windows is immune to viruses. Is this true? I mean also I read that this is the reason why Macintoshes haven't been plagued by this through the years (and that the Mac file system was somewhere between 32 and 64 bit) Anyone with lots of knowledge on the field?

I recently put together a new Vista Ult. box. Unfortunately soon after it got infected with a strain of Vundo, which I think I've erraticated, but somehow the machine still seems compramised. I can FTP, Email, Telnet with no problems, but once I open a web browser the wait for pages to load is painful. I have ClamWin as my main anti-virus software - I"ve scanned in SAFE MODE memory and all partitions
And I've ran all these programs in SAFE MODE numerous times to no avail Spybot S&D
Ad-aware 2007 Free
Super Anti-spyware
Windows Defender
Malicious Software Removal
HijackThis (nothing of concern comes up)
Replaced Hosts file
Soon after I run these programs web browsing is zippy for a little bit, but then strarts crawling. Images or ads won't load and then pages time out. I'm not sure what else I can check to see what is going on. Other machines on same network work fine.

Need good free anti virus program that runs well with Vista Home Premium. I downloaded the bought version 8.0 and began having problems with the computer lagging, and generally slow all over, not thinking it was AVG, I checked every other possible issue that I thought may be causing it. Eventually it lead to AVG, as things had been good prior to installation. I completely removed AVG and everything returned to normal, great! But then I done a further download of the program again, and once again the problems began. Is there a good alternative Anti Virus program that is recommended?

A few months ago, I had that lovely virus called Antivirus 2010. It got so bad that eventually, whenever I turned my Intel Pentium laptop on, the screen would just be black and there would be nothing except the virus window popping up with all the 'viruses' I had on my computer. Of course, a few other programs stopped running normally. The dock and widgets were gone. I had to create associations, which I never succeeded at, and this was all becoming way too frustrating. But I got by...
Last night, I decided to connect my HDMI cord to the laptop and watch a few episodes of Lost with my friends. Now, the HDMI button ('F8') wasn't working properly after my little mishap a few months earlier. When I pressed it, the usual, nice little pictures of different laptop-tv settings did not appear. Instead, I tried FN+ALT+F8. This seemed to work. But after we finished, I couldn't get the screen to return to normal again. It's all fuzzy and big, as if I was still connected to the tv.
** I tried personlization, and fizing screen resolution and stuff. It made things a little better, but the screen STILL isn't the same. Funny thing though. When I use print screen, the screen looks NORMAL. This morning, I rebooted my laptop. (Probably the stupidest thing I've ever done) I thought everything would be back to normal, but the screen is still the same, the nice little extras about Vista I was missing before have not returned, and my internet connection is gone.

1. Avira AntiVir Personal - This antivirus application can do wonders in removing viruses and protecting your computer. It has heuristic detection which stands out amongst free antivirus packages and from my personal experience it works well with Windows Vista. Oh and did I mention it doesn't eat up much resources? (Scan once a day)
2. Malware Bytes AntiMalware - This baby is free, reliable and updated every 10 minutes, well maybe not 10 minutes but it is updated at least more than twice a day from my experience. This supplements Avira by removing items that are not detected by Avira. Now, no trojan, virus worm or whatever malicious software will ever cause great damage to your system (Scan once every three days)
3. Last but not least, Windows' default firewall will do the trick. Let's face it, we don't want anything complicated controlling our internet traffic. I mean most of us these days are behind a router which has a built in firewall already. I honestly even didn't run my firewall with xp and was fine with it

I am being badly haunted by a Bagle virus that randomly shuts my PC down.
I have installed and run every type of virus scanning/removal tool (Windows included) in the world and although I removed other items, this virus will be dormant for days on end and then just shut down.
I ran Spyware Doctor and this is the infection location:
HKEY_USERSS-1-5-21-506413866-1318214124-3902625216-1001SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun, german.exe
Windows claims it is an email virus but no matter how hard I try, I cannot remove it. I have gone to the location of the virus manually through RegEdit but it doesn't show in the folder it indicates it is located (above).
Kaspersky, Norton, McAfee, you name it will shut them down when installing them. I quit. Any help is always appreciated.

I get a small alert window pop into the middle of the screen called "ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD" then text saying "type your username and password" Then there is three boxes with the details of my username etc and my password ****'d out. I can click "OK" or "CANCEL" or "CLOSE" but the box comes back. I am running Symantec virus protector and it finds nothing and Spybot and it shows there is a couple of items it can't correct unless I have admin profile.

I have an HP dv5-1000us running Vista Home Premium 64, and I've had it for several months. Recently it has developed a tendancy to randomly freeze solid (no control alt delete, no coming back from being frozen, must hard restart). It got much worse when I tried to install the new Zune update (3.1); now it will freeze like clockwork about 3 minutes after I open Zune. If I don't open Zune, it's much more random but it still happens. Another symptom is that I started getting a message that my sound driver software had to close due to a "problem". Sound still works, I just get the annoying message. Nothing I do seems to fix it, including Bios flashing, driver/device install/reinstall, etc.
I was really surprised when I looked at the system monitor. I have 4 gigs of RAM installed, and it runs at a steady 1.7gb usage with no programs open. I have disabled the animation stuff, too. When I open Zune it shoots up to around 2gb. The processor varies between 4 to 20% with no programs open, and is at 95-99% when Zune is open. As I'm typing this, I have flock, skype, and outlook open, the processor is running at about 30% and the RAM usage holds at a steady 1.76gb. Question: Is this normal? Or is it time (already) to bust out the restore disks?

I looked up all the info about the Virtumonde virus/trojan and everywhere I read said it's a virus that's more of a popup.. it's an ad crapper.. sends you hundreds of ad's and stuff of that sort. and that it can attach to IE and record your keystrokes and all that. but my brother doesn't have this problem.
My brothers problem with this Virtumonde virus. It's starting WITH Windows and completely locks him out of the system. During Boot, it's all fine, enters password. and see's background picture. then it covers the screen saying Virus detected and says what it is. and can't do ANYTHING. nothing works from there. I've tried cntl, alt, del. I've started in Safe Mode. only for it to stop with safe mode written in all 4 corners and do nothing.
I'm not the smartest person on virus's and stuff of this sort. I'm a gamer, and a builder, and Overclocker. not a Tech that can fix viruses. if I have to I'll just reinstall windows on his system. (XP) He doesn't have anything really he'd miss on that hard drive. just a few programs, Ventrillo and such.

Windows Defender or Avast stalls whenever I try to run them. Then, the only way to make the PC work again is to perform a hard restart. I try to have an on-line scan from the Symantec site, to no avail. The PC stalls again. Now, when Avast always seems to stall on either of the following files: system32/ntmarta.dll or System32/ntoskrnl.exe
Is ntmarta.dll a "straight" file or is it a virus ? Just for a try I tried to rename it, but could not do it. An errror message indicated that I do not have the rights to do so.
