i seem to be having a buffer overflow problem. whenever i view a video, Internet, wmv, etc., after several minutes, the system hangs and must be power cycled. this is not a virus problem, nor is it a memory limitation, as i have 4gb ram installed.
View 4 RepliesI have a dell notebook with Vista Home Basic SP1. AVG Anti virus. Starting some point in time (maybe after installing SP1 ??? but I can not guarantee) I can not play video at certain sites. When trying to do that IE crushes. I have tried to remove all IE add-ons and get them back, updated java, Flash Player and directx but no luck until now. Not sure if it relates but I got a suggestion in another forum to specifically set IE as the default web browser instead of: ???Use my current web browser??? (Start-> Default Programs-> Set Program Access and computer defaults -> Custom). But the problem here is that this configuration it is not kept. Meaning: After setting this (and actually any other setting there) and entering this configuration again ??? you can see this configuration remained as it was in the beginning.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was trying to do a system restore – I went through the normal steps, (may be that was a mistake to start with) clicked on “restore to an earlier date" and selected 24 Aug. 30 hours later the restore is still running –the green line is still going across the bottom of the screen. Not sure what to do now – If I pull the plug on the PC what will or might happen? I have a HP Pavillion Elite M9351 with Vista Ultimate 64

Whenever I bring up a new window (where you can browse for files), when opening, saving or importing something into the applications, so when I rightclick anywhere (the space, the folders or files), it just hangs for a minute (sometimes longer), while I see an hourglass-mouse-cursor, and I can't do anything about that window. I can tab to other programs, though. Sometimes there is also the same delay, when I right-click an icon (of an application that does not exist) on my Quick Launch bar. I have tried different applications, like ShellX, ShellMenuView and ProcMon. I've also tried removing some keys in regedit, to get rid of the extra rightclick options (like Winrar).

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy ASUS laptop is nearly a year old & running Vista home premium, but it`s never kept restore points for longer than two or three days.
I recently started the Volulme Shadow copy, which was stopped, & set it to manual; later I tried automatic, but none of that seems to work. Still no restore points kept for longer than three days.
I`m not dual booting with windows XP, & this is the amount of space allocated to restore points:
Used shadow copy storage space: 924.293 MB
Allocated shadow copy storage space: 1.172 GB
Maximum shadow copy storage space: 4.434 GB
I don`t use diskeeper defragmenting tool at all, I use the disk clean up & defragmenter that came with windows vista. I do have Ccleaner, which has a disk cleaner & registry cleaner. I practically don`t use the registry cleaner, & sometimes I use the disk cleaner, but I haven`t used it at all for the last couple of months, & the problem persists. I use as well: Spybot-search & destroy; Ad-aware & my antivirus, which is Mc Afee, does defragment & clean up on a schedule.
I used to have the Norton Antivirus for three months last year, but not anymore, but I realized yesterday that I still haven`t uninstall the Symantec liveUpdate. I don`t have any other Symantec products running on my laptop.
I have had this computer up for 30 days at a time but when my sister comes to visit I turn on the guest account and log out of my identity and let the computer sit at the choice between my account and guest is and I can't get through a night without Vista Home Prem. crashing. I have SP1 installed and besides this problem I have not had problems like this. Why would enabling the guest account cause crashes? Is because I have programs running in my profile and that causes a conflict? This is frustrating as you can imagine. I looked at events and at 10:30 there was a faulting application: LVPrcSrv.exe faulting module USER32.dll. Then at 12:02 the previous shut down was unexpected. There is 1.5 hours between the fault and the message about unexpected shutdown?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi am new to this forum but i have problem with my system bootup. my system takes too long to boot and it started 3days ago. it takes about 120secs at bootscreen alone. i believe it is not my start up programs as it takes about 3 secs to start up from login page. i donot use any third party bootscreen. normally, my system boots in 30 secs but now i am facing a lot of problem which i do not understand. i have tried all the tutorials in this forum relating to bootup problems but found no luck.

I learned it was RAM that was used to help the graphic card that is new with windows vista, but am I loosing this ram in the games or is it not important? i have an asus F3JM AK022H with geforcego7600 (512mo dedicated memory) and 2go RAM.
In my graphic card properties it's noticed that i have 512mo dedicated video memory, 0mo system memory, 767mo shared system video memory and 1279mo total graphic memory (the 512 of my GC and the 767 "shared system video memory")
So my question is : do I loose those 767mo of RAM during my games? (i don't think my CG needs more memory since it already has 512mo dedicated), and I have only 2go RAM so if I loose 767mo i don't have much RAM left. And can I change this setting or disable it?
I can be playing a video - divx, mpg, VBO, anything - and all of a sudden it becomes distorted, as shown in the attatchment. It also distorts the mouse, which I can't screen cap. It doesn't take long after this happens for the machine to freeze up; it muts be reset via reset button, because using Shutdown or Restart from Windows goes to a plain blue screen.
At first I thought it was the codecs, so I removed the K-Lite codec pack and installed a Vista 64 codec pack. I've done a Memtest and its fine, and the video and CPU temps are all fine. It ONLY happens while playing videos, and then randomly. I can watch a 2 hour movie sometimes with no problem, other time it happens in 15 mins. Sometimes after a reset I can continue on without the issue, other times it crop up again in 5 mins. I can play games for hours without a single problem, and I'm talking intense games like Crysis, and Age of Conan.
I have been having this very frustrating problem with Vista 64. The machine seems to be find and I can run anything I want, but then it will just lock up. The screen shows what ever graphics was there but its all scrambled. This can happen at an time after the desktop show, 2 minutes or 2 hours. I can run in safe mode all day and night so I'm thinking graphics or some other driver. I have run tests using Everest Ultimate and everything seems fine, except it will lockup like everything else. I have had this issue since the beginning, when I had 1 video card. I have gotten Crossfire enabled and SP1 installed. I am using the latest Catalyst driver 8.3. One note, when I installed the newest driver, it changed how the screen looks when it locks up, but its still the same issue.

It’s still in dual screen mode as I can see a taskbar window fly to the second monitor. But I have to sleep and wake again to get it to come back on. Anyone else experience something like this? I don’t remember it ever happening before and was wondering if it could be the patch.

I have a quad-boot Intel CoreDuo machine with 4 GB of memory and an ATI AIW X1900 Radeon (multi-booting courtesy of EasyBCD). To put the matter as quickly as possible, all four systems (Vista 32, Vista 64, XP, and Ubuntu) have been happily coexisting for a long time. I haven't used Vista 64 for about 10 days and went in to do some work on it this morning. To my surprise, the video disappeared immediately after the green startup wait indicator. Eventually, after about the usual amount of time and hard disk activity, the startup sound came on but absolutely no video. I restored my full backup of the Vista 64 partition from last Sunday=97 same problem!
I went in on safe mode but it is impossible to change video settings or install new drivers in safe mode so that was a dead end. I tried the repair utility that comes with Vista but it could find no problem with startup. My working hypothesis is that something has gone wrong with the video drivers although that may not be the case. Even if it were, I can think of no way of fixing it short of completely rebuilding the Vista 64 system checked desperately do not want to do
who has purchased a JVC Everio HDD video camera has probably learned that they chose to use some god forsaken proprietary video format - the .MOD extension. Apparently this is some sort of MPEG2 encoding, however, most major video editing suites prefer not to accept this format? what we need is something more common? such as .AVI or .MPG. I would be happy with the .MOD file format if the software that came with the JVC Everio actually worked.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate and when I stream videos from websites like Gametrailers.com as either a Windows Media or a Quicktime file the video is choppy and has sound issues. If I download the same video there is no choppyness and once the stream is no longer on HTTP and is on CACHE it is fine. I know i have enough bandwidth for the video and under statistics I does not show any errors .I have all the latest drivers and service packs. I have reinstalled Vista as both 32 bit and 64 bit to see if there was some difference. I also have this same issue on my Laptop running Vista.

I finally decided to upgrade to Vista, and since I have 4GB ram I thought I'd give 64bit a shot. Every game I play crashes, or fails to load at all, or gets into the game and crashes during map load. I have Vista Ultimate 64 installed. I have installed and re-installed the OS multiple times to no effect. I've downloaded all of the windows updates. They are joined to a w2k3r2 domain, and whenever the users take them home and are not connected to the domain, they are unable to login. They can get to the welcome screen and put in their domain username and password but it will sit forever at the welcome screen with the circle spinning. I have clocked it up to an hour before shutting it down. As soon as they come in the next day and are plugged into our network they have no problems. However I have found that if I log in as the local administrator, let everything come up, I can log off and log back in with my cached domain user account. i did check to see if the user profiles were actually created ahead of time and they are. I am stumped and it is to the point where I am ready to downgrade to xp on these machines as work is being lost.

The problem is that when I boot, it gets past my normal boot screen (where you enter your bios options) and goes to a black screen. Then after several minutes (3-5) I get the green vista progress bar and the computer boots into Vista. Once i'm in, it's a screaming machine. Works great, I've got a WEI of 4.4. Anyone know why the boot up takes SOOOO long?

I had XP on a system I just built for a friend but now I have been trying to install Vista 64 on his new gammin rig. Howeve Ive found that the load process seems to be locking up. The first time I tried to load it, it just sat at 0% in Expanding files, the second time at 18% and were talking 30 mins at a time. Im just about had it with messing with windows vista and doing a nice fresh XP load on it cause I know that It works already, I just wanted him to get the newer better...........

View 6 Replies View RelatedI use Vista x64 and I browse my explorer windows in the 'List' view. Just recently (well, today actually) my main music folder has decided it will not shorten the file names (limit the amount of characters shown) and is showing the full length, which means I am only seeing one column until I scroll along to the right as some names are LONG. This is very annoying. It doesn't do it in any other view mode and it doesn't do it if I open a different folder (they're shorted with the '...' at the end), and yet directly or indirectly as soon as I open the music folder they are full again. As I wrote earlier I've tried the different 'view' modes and putting it back does nothing, so I'm perplexed why it's happened and how I can fix it.
ETA: Oh, I have to say it now seems like every folder's doing the same thing, and if I right click the 'Name' tag, go to 'More' and select the width for columns it does not save when I exit the folder and re-enter. This is how it looks now: and this is how it used to look, and how it temporarily looks if I switch the view to medium/large/extra large icons and then back (although as soon as I refresh the window, close, etc it reverts back): I did once use a registry edit to stop Vista changing the folder view due to folder content (I think this was it here, not sure), but I don't think that has any impact on this.
When I launch Vista 64 Ultimate, my harddrive light shows activity for 7 to 10 minutes.
Is this normal or do I have something turned on that I can turn off? I run AVG antivirus, I'm going to check and see if it's doing a boot scan. But the disk activity is something like that....for a very long time.
Or is this sort of like asking "how long is a piece of string?" My laptop was attacked by my 9 year old computer illiterate child this morning and has since failed to bootup. I got as far as the startup repair which kicked in automatically but after several cycles (each lasting a few minutes) it has now been "attempting repairs" for over 4 hours. It won't let me cancel and I don't want to cut the power in case it is still working and not actually hung. Should I let it carry on running? Should I cut the power? Any keys I could use to bypass? I can't provide a lot of info about the machine or what happened on the run up to the error.

I did a clean install of Vista too. When I click restart it literally is on the "shutting down" screen for 2 minutes. That's not an exaggeration at all - I clocked it several times. Is there something I can do to speed it up?
