I have been using Vista HP for about 4 months. When first installed, there was an option 'Switch User' on the 'Shutdown/Log Off/Restart.... etc.' Menu. This option has now disappeared. How may I restore it?
View 5 RepliesI'm running Vista Home Premium (6.0.6001--sp 1). Since installing Checkpoint VPN client, the Switch User option has disappeared from my shutdown menu. (I've since deinstalled the VPN.) I've read elsewhere that it might be a group-settings issue, and it can be toggled by using the group administration panel. This was for Vista Ultimate, though; trying to run "gpedit.msc" fails with a "not found" error. Is there another way to alter this? Perhaps by hacking the registry? My wife and I switch fairly often between our profiles, so I would like to have the option.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThere is only one account and it is my own. However on more than one occasion and, as a matter of fact, just now; when I log on there are two of me at the logon screen. Just two identical logons. Is this another profile the is a shadow or double of my login that runs at the same time. I can choose either to logon on to and they both are identical with identical passwords, etc.. Once I log on I can't switch user and see the profile again. What is this?

Several other files weren't there as compared to the install demo. I'm certainly missing something here, what is it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever someone in my family walks away from using the computer with Windows Vista, after the Screen Saver, I'm always taken to a screen that allows only the last user to log back in, but when someone else wants to log in, they need to hit the "Switch User" button to go back to the regular login screen. Can I have the computer just go back to showing all the user's names (so I don't have to click the "Switch User" button to login as me). I would like this to work, just as XP did... so if the last person who used the computer has to log back in, s/he would just have to click their name again...just like XP did.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn addition to needing help, it's the 'help & support icons' that = disappeared. I have no idea how to restore them. The icons are huge numbers with no extensions.
I suspect it may have something to do with a system restore. renamed all folders to folder[2]. and left empty folders in their places. Something else, I just installed a new program, went to the folder, and = made desktop shortcuts. The shortcuts are there, and they work. But they have = no icons.
I hit properties, the actual icons show there. I tried resetting the = icons, they reset, but not on the desktop. =46or some reason I also had to use UAC to reset the icons. This UAC is killing me. Every time it pops up I expect the machine will = lock up..
Where does windows store the graphics used for the "Switch User" graphic (not the user pictures, but the actual button that says "switch user") ?
View 8 Replies View Relatedrunning Vista Home Premium (32-bit). When you log into Windows, you immediately get the error "Windows Explorer has stopped working". Then it says explorer is restarting, restarts your desktop, then is ok for about 3 seconds. The error then pops back up and it is stuck in that loop.
It started when he clicked on some popup he shouldn't have. I removed a trojan identified by Mcafee as exploit-byte verify. I have also disabled all startup programs and services (except windows services) through msconfig. However, I am still getting this error popup. Unfortunately, he had previously turned off the system restore option and got rid of the recovery partition.
the special junctions that Vista and Win7 have added to the profile directories for backwards-compatibility. No backup software I have seen (short of complete imaging software) seems to backup and/or restore junction points. So I find myself with the profile missing all the default junction points, and quite frankly, not sure how to manually recreate them. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to replicate the Vista/Win7's original junctions that are hidden when "Hide Protected Operating System Files" is enabled.
The junction points that I am referring to are things like ("My Documents", "My Music", "Application Data", "Local Settings", etc). Is there a tool out there that can accomplish this for me? Or is there somethign I can do by hand to recreate these junction points? I have searched and searched the web for hours, but cannot seem to find anyone who has asked this question before.
I did a system restore last Friday and all went well (I thought) However, when one of my 2 daughters attempted to gain access to her part, she was greeted with a black screen and no program icons. My other daughter attempted to do the same on her account, with the same result. Previous to the system restore, they could both access their partitions easily with everything on display. The laptop has a 250 gig h/d, and they were designated as standard accounts, mine being the admin account. They are particularly keen to retrieve their I-tunes stuff, so any help or advice would be gratefully received. I am trying hard to avoid a reformat.

I have tried Orphcrack on the system but it's not showing any passwords. The user tells me the system has been acting odd for some time now and - of course - he does not have a backup and to make it worse his tax information is on the system so he had to file an extension to get time for me to do this recovery and restore. I need to pull his files from the system to wipe, perform a clean install, setup his account and restore his files.

this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
Laptop connected wireless to a router. Desktop connected to same router with Ethernet cable. Seagate external HDD, connected to the desktop with a USB 2 connection. I'm trying to use Vista Backup & Restore to backup the laptop to the external HDD. When I try to set it up, the program finds the disk alright. But then it asks for a user & password. What user & password? I tried with all the PW's and users I have on the two computers, but nothing works.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI believe my computer got infected with a virus. Windows Defender detected "TrojanDwonlaoder:Win32/Bredolab.AA" and "Trojan:Win32/Hiloti.gen!D". It claims to have successfully removed these. I restart my computer. When I log on, I get Data Execution Protection notifications about Rundl32 and the like. I also notice that "flvencoder.exe" is running and consuming 30% CPU. I did install this program (Gmax FLV encoder) and perhaps it contained a virus (though the program worked). I also don't recall that it should have started upon logging on. None of this really matters, I don't think. I did a System Restore to a point before I installed Gmax FLV encoder (3 days prior). The restore completes successfully. Upon logging into my account, I get see the "Preparing Desktop" message and know that this is not good news. My user profile was not loaded. All of the data is there though. What I first tried to do was logging into Safe Mode, and setting the reg. keys such that my old profile is loaded instead of a temporary one...................................

When I restarted it, I was given a fresh new desktop with new music folders, documents folder etc.etc. I have since found out I was given a TEMP account - which is weird because I still logged into MY personal profile with no problems (and no warning messages about files being lost when I shut the computer down). Anyway, since I didn't get any message, I worked on my website pages all day and saved the work into a folder on the "new" desktop.
HOWEVER... after restarting the computer the next day and logging into my profile, I was presented with my original desktop - - - BUT NO FOLDER WITH ALL MY WORK! When I searched for the specific files and folder on my computer - I found the files, but I could not open them because "C:UsersTEMP(folder name)" did not exist! Is there a way.. ANY WAY of getting those files back?
I've been using Windows Vista Premium for over a year now. So far I've no problems with it yet. However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? I have tried a system restore back a week when they were all still good but that did not make a difference.

When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

Also can you turn off DX10 for DX10 games to improve performace - run them from a DX9 instead. All bells a whistles aside - I am gonna streamline this system and I don't need the added junk bogging my cycles down.
IMO XP Pro x32 would do it for me and if possible I will reformat the HD completly without voiding warranty. I really don't need it for what I want to do. It came pre-installed from Asus. There is not alot of support in gaming to warrant the DX10 or the x64 yet and this is not the best gaming laptop. I only spent $650 for the rig couldn't pass it up for that price.
[This is my second post on the same subject. The first thread died] I had this Vista Home Basic machine working okay, but the power went out and then another person who was high used the machine. They named a new user as administrator. I don't know what else they did.
Now I have a new user as administrator and the previous users are gone. I still see evidence of them in the file tree but the old programs are gone and the documents are buried in C > Users > Admin (that was a name of a previous user that I had named when I first got the machine) I've gradually installed some of my old programs and I'm currently
just rebuilding everything, but it would be a lot easier if I could revert to the old user system. The Control Panel > add or remove user accounts is useless. I only have two icons there So is there anyway to return to the original condition? How can I recover the missing users?

My Network and Sharing center said my connection was connecting/disconnecting every few seconds and I was unable to reach the internet. My network is something like this (ignore the periods, they're there because the field won't format blank spaces :P ) :

I have 4 separate IPs from my ISP so I can RDP into anything not behind the router from work. The wireless is just nice for random evices. All 3 PCs have independent IPs assigned from the ISPs DNS. All systems work fine except the x64.I thought it was my on-board NIC so I went and bought a PCI NIC. It did the same thing. At this point I think I might have 2 bad NICs so i went and got a third - same thing. I read around on some forums and tweaked my duplex settings which stopped the connect/disconnect, but then I got something like this in my Network and Sharing Center:x64 ===>green===>Unidentified Network===> X ===> Internet,Changing the duplex settings around did not resolve this.Next, I followed a Microsoft fix and changed a setting in my registry that did something about disabling a packet broadcast Vista does that some devices cannot respond to. Still no go.After pulling what's left of my hair out I slept on it and plugged my x64 system into the router.
Disco! It worked. However, because of the physical locations of each system this is messy and cannot remain in place. (Aside from that I want to resolve this issue because I think it is dumb :/ )So my question is - why can't my Vista x64 system get an IP via DHCP from the ISPs DNS? Is there something I need to turn off/kill that I haven't hit yet? When it is getting it from the router it seems happy as a clam but through the switch is no-go. (gives that nasty 169.... (preferred) address). I used mostly XP before and it looks like Vista is trying to connect to some local network and self-assign its IP. How can I make it stop (without asking my ISP for a static IP, cause they prolly won't give it to me w/o mucho $$)?
