I want to be able to stop users being able to change the auto-hide setting of the taskbar on a windows vista machine. Anyone any ideas how to do this? I want it to be set to always auto-hide so the solution either wants to stop the user being able to change this or maybe as a second solution if they do change it then i want it to be reset when the machine is rebooted.
View 5 RepliesI've recently got this problem where my taskbar will no longer stay hidden. Once I boot up it will auto-hide for a short time then it just stops working as if my mouse is always hoovering over the taskbar. I can then disable and then re-enable the feature and it will then hide until I put my mouse over it and then it will no longer hide. The only new thing that was done before this happened was installing Vipre Antivirus software. I've tried disabling that to see if that was the problem but it still remains. Does nayone have any ideas what would cause this and more importantly how to fix it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSometimes when watching a video in vista media center, the screen control's won't auto hide. The mouse cursor also won't disappear like it should when mouse is kept idle. A reboot of PC fixes problem but I'm hoping someone has a solution other than having to restart my computer multiple times in a day.

Now I imagine there is way to change these icons, or new ones would not be available for use. I feel about my computer the way I feel about my home. It is a reflection of me, and I am not a "default" or "standard" person .
Even if it is complicated I want to know how. Please, Please help me. I don't want to die of computer bordom.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAs a total novice at Vista and a new machine purchased I am keen to keep my son from getting inside this pc. He is always changing various settings without asking so I have tried to set his account to Standard User but he still seems to be getting past that to set himself as an Administrator. I have a password set on my account as Administrator so I do not understand how he is getting past this security. He is proficient at working pc's so when I ask him how he does he just says "I am good". Does he have a way of bypassing the user setting I have given him or does he know my password if the latter then easy to fix but if he has a way to bypass this then what can I do to stop it if anything?

She is on as the Administrator, I created a 'new User' for myself but software such as Blackbery desktop, Google Chrome and the dial-up for my Blackberry don't seem to be accesable, at least not readily> I did go to the Google chrome folder and made it "sharable" with my user account but after going to my account, still couldn't access it unless it went through permission by administrator. I'm confused as I assumed that if any new user accounts were set up that all software that was down loaded and install while in the Administrators user account (my girl friend) that they would be easily accessable in any new user accounts that we set up, right? wrong?

If i wish to rename it i would right click like every othe microsoft OS ever created. Why when i click on a short cut from my desk top does nothing happen (no feedback that i have clicked) so i click again and get two (or more) application loading. View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a game I wanted ot make work but DEP kept stopping it so I turned off DEP by using the command prompt. bcdedit.exe/set {current] nx AlwaysOff and it worked. I then restarted Vista and all I get is a quick flash of a blue crseen and then two options, 1) Repair and 2) Start normally. I have restored to an earlier point, I have also tried safe mode, I pressed F8 and tried starting with last known working settings and also F8 then a repair option, opened a command prompt and tried reversing the command but it didn't seem to do anything.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been unable to load and use itunes because of a DEP message that pops up on screen shutting down the program.
I have done the following:
*uninstalled the programs itunes and quicktime
*uninstalled the programs completely using Crogram files - the additional way of uninstalling.
* reinstalled/uninstalled both programs about 4 times
* reinstalled quicktime as a stand alone program
* used Windows installer clean up
I can't turn DEP off by selecting itunes and putting into the marked exception box because an error message tells me that itunes MUST operate with DEP. It will not drag it into the box.
In a message there is 39 files I need to download and I'm only getting 36, saying that my security is stopping some files...how can I get these 3 files to download?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have the problem that when I restored my computer to an earlier time I had uninstalled Threatfire but it is still there and I can't get rid of it now. It is stopping me from downloading other programs! When I try to delete the folder in programs it tells me that I can't as I do not have the rights to do it even though I am the administrator and sole user of the computer. I have used CCleaner to try to remove it but it does not work either. I have tried in safe mode also.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAt some point I have pressed the 'receive updates for other products' on the Windows Update panel. I now have half a dozen updates for Office 2007 waiting for installation. I do not have Office 2007 - I do have Office 2000 and Works, so I don't see any point in downloading and installing these updates.I have tried hiding the updates, but because they are 'important' they reappear. Is there any way of deselecting the'other products' option so I go back to only checking for Windows updates?

I've tried all the suggestions I have found to date (including uninstalling OneNote, repairing registry issues etc etc) and I still can't get the damn thing to work. Every time it loads I get the message saying Internet Explorer has stopped working. I normally use Firefox, but have to be able to test websites in IE so must get it working.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with my Microsoft Vista print spooler (spoolsv.exe) stopping on Data Execution Prevention (DEP) violations from the time I installed my HP and Lexmark printers. This has been only an irritation to date as I have set the spooler to always restart 1 minute after failure. However lately I am having more programs stop on DEP violation. The Microsoft Vista??? WMI Provider Host??? has stopped several times on DEP. I do not know what the ???Vista WMI Provider Host??? does. I did not see any adverse results with the Microsoft Vista??? WMI Provider Host??? stopped. So far my DEP violations have been random and inconsistent. The print spooler stops on DEP even when both printers are off. I have performed hardware checks as recommended by Dell and the computer hardware tested OK.

I change settings in control pannel / power settings / balanced to 10 min for monitor and never for computer. I check the "advanced settings" to assure that they are the same. I use balanced because that seems to be the default in the registry. I do not see the actual settings in the registry. Every so often Vista resets the settings back to 20 min for the monitor. I have looked at but it speaks of "System Settings page" - I don't know what that is. In any case, my settings have no effect and I can't get the monitor to dependably go to standby after 10 minutes.

In XP I could use TweakUI to hide a disk drive from the kids and was still
able to use the hidden drive.
There is no TweakUI for Vista and I've tried to hide a drive with registry
tweaks(HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer)
and via command prompt (using diskpart). The problem is that both ways leave
hidden drives that are not usable. It's as if they truely do not exist.
I've run across a couple of applications (Avira Premium Security Suite, Spyware Terminator) that, despite choosing the "Always Hide" option for their tray icon, every time the computer reboots, they default back to "Hide When Inactive." Sure, it's a minor issue to set them back to "Always Hide" when I reboot, but is there some sort of tweak somewhere that will force these applications to remember the "Always Hide" setting, instead of defaulting back to "Hide When Inactive?"

My question is not one for the Outlook newsgroup (I reckon) but simply as to the path in Windows Vista leading to the Outlook Address Book. I ask because it was my custom to back up Outlook Express daily on to an external hard drive by drag and drop. I would transfer to related address book in a similar manner. Having upgraded to Outlook, I am able to back up that folder daily in a similar manner. But when I find the new address book, in .csv format, it does not relate directly to the new address book that I have edited in Outlook format. My question is, put simply, is there a proper address book lurking away in the background that is invisible to me?
