How Can Hide Usernames From Welcome Screen?
Feb 11, 2009
There are some usernames that I do not want to be displayed on Vista Welcome Screen. I could not find a TweakUI for Vista to accomplish this. I googled and found a solution that concerned with the registry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Winlogon SpecialAccounts UserList]. I added the usernames[DWORD32:0] under the key, but the username still appears on WelCome Screen

System has 2 hard drives in which boot independantly, ones in 32 bit windows vista, the other 64 bit windows vista home premium- only reason for 2 is that when machine was upgraded last year (which essentially meant almost everything was replaced!) there was data on original hard drive so pc builders put original hard drive in on dual boot so I could access it all with the intention of removing op system and turning it to a storage drive when finished (never got round to it though). It automatically boots to the 64 bit drive unless overridden at start up. The problem is with the 64 bit hard drive boot.
Yesterday all was working fine, only thing done on machine yesterday was check facebook, download emails and run a full virus scan (Kaspersky). Shut down after scan had completed this morning (ran overnight, had halted at about 80% because machine put itself to sleep too soon so completed this morning) and restarted. Appears to start okay, gets to the screen with the 3 user images on it and stops. So I have the screen with the 3 usernames showing, 2 of these users have passwords (mine and hubby's) the 3rd has no password (kids account - rarely used account) but clicking on anything does nothing - it should bring up the log in screen but nothing happens. The images do become highlighted but the log on does not appear. Same goes for the accesibility button on the bottom left of the screen and the shut down options on the bottom right - just no response.
The hard drive activity light is on and flickering though, have left the machine for up to half an hour and the light is still flickering but everything is still unresponsive. Trying to go into safe mode does exactly the same - stops at the user names screen and is unresponsive. Have tried last known good and that didn't change anything.

Sometimes when watching a video in vista media center, the screen control's won't auto hide. The mouse cursor also won't disappear like it should when mouse is kept idle. A reboot of PC fixes problem but I'm hoping someone has a solution other than having to restart my computer multiple times in a day.

In XP I could use TweakUI to hide a disk drive from the kids and was still
able to use the hidden drive.
There is no TweakUI for Vista and I've tried to hide a drive with registry
tweaks(HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer)
and via command prompt (using diskpart). The problem is that both ways leave
hidden drives that are not usable. It's as if they truely do not exist.

I've run across a couple of applications (Avira Premium Security Suite, Spyware Terminator) that, despite choosing the "Always Hide" option for their tray icon, every time the computer reboots, they default back to "Hide When Inactive." Sure, it's a minor issue to set them back to "Always Hide" when I reboot, but is there some sort of tweak somewhere that will force these applications to remember the "Always Hide" setting, instead of defaulting back to "Hide When Inactive?"

My alumni group website received an anonymous letter with invalid (fake ) address. This alumni group site is Membership Only. Members must provide valid e-mail addresses and nobody is to send messages to the group without membership and valid acknowledged address. So, my question is, how did this happen ? How did the message get through, and how did the sender use faked address and still be able to send the message out? We want to stop this.

I am running a new Sony Vaio laptop with Vista Home Premium installed (no SP1 offered to me as yet). My question is not one for the Outlook newsgroup (I reckon) but simply as to the path in Windows Vista leading to the Outlook Address Book. I ask because it was my custom to back up Outlook Express daily on to an external hard drive by drag and drop. I would transfer to related address book in a similar manner. Having upgraded to Outlook, I am able to back up that folder daily in a similar manner. But when I find the new address book, in .csv format, it does not relate directly to the new address book that I have edited in Outlook format. My question is, put simply, is there a proper address book lurking away in the background that is invisible to me?

I am picking up a conversation that has been developing in a thread on another topic because I think it is signifacant and should get its own thread. Jawade of Kolibrie Software has been saying that his boot manager can effectively prevent XP volsnap.sys from erasing Vista's shadowcopies in a multiboot scenario. He has been trying a few things to verify this and hopefully he will join this thread and supply some info about it. So far he has verified that restore points and previous versions survive a reboot into XP and a reboot back into Vista.
During the Vista beta program several testers tried some well-known boot managers that were supposed to be able to hide a volume and either they did not function correctly with Vista or they did not hide a Vista volume at a low enough level to prevent XP from damaging Vista files.

I've recently got this problem where my taskbar will no longer stay hidden. Once I boot up it will auto-hide for a short time then it just stops working as if my mouse is always hoovering over the taskbar. I can then disable and then re-enable the feature and it will then hide until I put my mouse over it and then it will no longer hide. The only new thing that was done before this happened was installing Vipre Antivirus software. I've tried disabling that to see if that was the problem but it still remains. Does nayone have any ideas what would cause this and more importantly how to fix it?

I want to be able to stop users being able to change the auto-hide setting of the taskbar on a windows vista machine. Anyone any ideas how to do this? I want it to be set to always auto-hide so the solution either wants to stop the user being able to change this or maybe as a second solution if they do change it then i want it to be reset when the machine is rebooted.

Is it possible to disable/re-enable or hide/unhide Start Menu in Windows Vista via registry, using VB6 or at least disable/re-enable all items in (shortcuts and everyrthing else in Start Menu) in order to exclude starting of ANY program via contents of Start menu in Vista while my own application is active? Could it be possible to disable/re-enable "Windows" key or any combinations of keys such as "Windows" + "Esc" via registry, using VB6?

It is only available when using Vista Ultimate. I suspect it will require registry tweak but I don’t know how to do it.

Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

Am still in early days with a new computer with Vista. In Windows explorer, and when using Office, I see shortcut icons labelled things like "my music", "My videos", "My documents" which seem to be hangovers from XP, but all of which give "access denied messages when I click on them. So why on earth are they there? Can I hide/delete them?

This never happened with Vista when setup this way why is Windows 7 doing this?

Something very odd happened today. I was as usual loading a large file ( 5.4gb ) in to Photoshop and as PS was doing it's business I noticed everything jumped over to my second monitor and the main monitor went blank. Moments later the image on the second monitor turned into a garbled fragmented mess before going into power save mode from which I couldn't get out of. Very strange.....Forced a warm boot. As the system had just been turned on so I can sort of rule out a heat issue - possibly & ram test OK. My workstation is mainly off line but two days ago I had to ftp something and I do remember vista installing an automatic update for windows update (without my permission) which I was very annoyed about, shame on you MS.....and after rebooting I saw a few reg. modifications come up on screen. Could this be the cause of this odd behavior. It's been fine since I had the warm boot - any ideas as to what's going on.

I've had voltage issues causing my computer to freeze or reboot during games and dvds. Fixed that and the computer was fine after memtest showing no problems. That was late Dec.
A few days ago, the computer would go to a blue screen saying it's dumping physical memory and then automatically reboots. Thinking my harddisk might be collapsing on me (I have a seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gb HD with the SD15 firmware, the infamous crash friendly HD), I flash the HD with the SD1A firmware from seagate, then it was fine. 2days later, Catalyst started to cause problems by not responding, so I formated the drive and reinstalled vista ultimate, along with Catalyst, drivers from Mobo manufacturer ASUS, plus a couple of other softwares. That was yesterday, and now I'm getting the same blue screen back, or the computer just freezes.
