Resetting C-drive Allocations To Default Setting In Vista

To prepare for a dual boot installation (Vista / Ubuntu) I had to allocate space on my C-drive using Vista's 'Disk Management' and 'Shrink Volume' features. Unfortunately, in the process of making the allocation, I mistakenly allocated 40 MB instead of 40 GB. Went back into 'Shrink Volume' to correct the allocation but it apparently cannot increase space. Also tried 'Extend Volume', no luck there either (or maybe I just don't understand how it works). For what it's worth, here's my current C-drive allocations.
144.81 GB NTFS
40.00 MB Unallocated (reserved for Ubuntu) (this is what should have been 40GB)
75.29 GB Primary Partition
3.24 GB Primary Partition
9.49 GB NTFS
I should also mention that I already have Ubuntu installed, so this is actually a re-installation to solve a connection problem I'm having with Ubuntu.
i used advanced vista optimiser to give my laptop a good clean out as i do every week. but this time when i went to log on the diagnostic comes and says either change proxy settings or try resetting local connection setting. i tried resetting many a time which as done no good. web address bar states where its going but the diag box comes on again.so in the mean time while this is all going on a new tab keeps on opening by its self and saying the same thing,this started to happen before i cleaned my l.p but it was just redirecting to a blank page.
that is why i did the clean.anyhow resetting the lan did not work so i reset the internet expolorer in the tools on the bar. which as worked but the same thing is still happening with the tab ,but now its redirecting to all the freebiee sites and it will not stop. i have spyware-adware-trojan software on my l.p and still no good it did pick up 3 infections which it sorted out, its driving me f*&^%*ng nuts:mad::mad:
I can't seem to get Windows Mail to accept my setting of a preferred font for the default. I am setting Ariel, but when a go to enter text in an email it uses the first font on the font list.
When I try to change word as the default problem my computer won't let me. It has recommended programs: adobe reader, wordpad, works etc but no word. So I browse find word, click on it and it goes back to the previous place but word still not there. Same thing happens when i go into the set associations section.
When I download pics from my camera, they go to windows photo gallery, in addition to Panasonic photofun studio. I want to make photofun my default, but it is not available to set that way. And when I deleted the pics in windows photo gallery, they were also deleted in photofun. I don't need them in 2 places.
I am getting ready to use Brink's tutorial on setting a scheduled System Restore point each day and I noted that he said that it was standard for Vista to make a Restore point each day at start up and one at midnight. Last time I looked I did not have these in my list of points, so I checked to see if the startup and midnight points were indeed enabled to be created. They were. But when I went to look at System Restore points available I had none of the startup or midnight points available. Further checking showed that 2 days ago when I installed Nero 9, it made 40 restore points in the 17 minutes it took to install! Why would it do that? Does it make any sense? I made one before I installed it, and okay, I could see it might make one itself before the install, but ... 40??!
So, am I correct in assuming that because of these 40 restore points the system is now not able to save the StartUp and Midnight points because I also manually have made one or two per day over the past few days, so it keeps the manual ones and the Nero ones and throws out the System-created ones because there is not enough room and they are the lower priority? Or what is going on here? I did not change my default system restore storage size or anything, it is set at default settings.
I'm running Vista on a PC that has a hd that has been formated into 3 discrete drives.Vista is loaded onto the C drive, programmes are loaded onto the d drive while i have my data stored on my E drive. By default any documents I save are directed towards My Documents on the C drive - how I go about changing that so the default is my Documents on the E drive?
My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.
In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.
I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.
how to change the default setting of the Recent Items on the Start menu from alphabetical to date order in Vista Home Premium. I did it on my desktop a year ago- I seem to recall it was a Registry change- but on my laptop I'm stuck with the useless alphabetical order.
I got a new system (AMD Athlon Dual Core, 3GHz, Vista Home Premium, 500GB SATA HDD), installed a new SATA drive (250GB), and installed WinXP on the new drive (I undid all the cable to the Vista drive first). Now, I can boot off Vista or XP, but the default system is XP. I have to go to the Boot menu to bring Vista up. Is there a way to set the Vista drive as the default drive? Can I simply switch the drive cables? The jumpers no longer do Master/Slave, so I'm not sure on this. (BTW, when I boot up in Vista, and use a boot up controller program like Easy BCD, it does not show XP as a boot option).
My laptop has two hard drives. C has Vista on it and along with updates it's almost full. D drive is much larger. I'd like any new programs to automatically install to D. Is there a way to do that?
Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
I recently bought a back up drive, but its default action - when I double click it -isn't 'open'. How can I change this? also, how do I change what comes up in the right-click menu for it?
I just restored my PC from Acronis and the Hard drive icon is not the default. The OS drive is the internal default disk. I just need the default image for it so i can change it through the registry, or instructions to change it to default.
When I right click a drive on my Vista..it shows explore as the default option and is highlighted than the open....I check for trojans and viru but none were found.
I kinda downloaded some themes for Vista and well... all the folders kinda mixed with the default one.
So, I'm looking for a list of the Official included themes in Vista.
I know that there are :
- Aero
- Classic Windows
I know there was at least 5 of them.
If possible can someone can ZIP and send me the themes in question (C:WindowsResourcesThemes) it would be less difficult to figure out what themes I need to restore from the Bin.
Ultimate, Cannot display jpg background image on desktop. All I get is a black background. All bmp works fine. I have checked the registry and have found no problems. If I drag a jpg to ie7 and right click set to desktop it works but that just converts the jpg to a bmp. Even the default wallpapers that come with Vista does not work.
My company has a fax shared on one of the 2003 servers. When I print to this fax server in Windows XP the Fax Wizard walks me thru all the necesarry screens and remembers my Delivery Notification settings, i.e. whether I want a notification, the email address I want the notification sent to and the attach a copy of the fax to the notification.
All of these settings I can find in the XP Registry at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftFaxUserInfoReceiptEMail(dword), ReceiptAttachFax(dword) and ReceiptAddress(string). However, I cannot find these same settings in Vista Registry. I can set these each time I send a fax in Vista under ToolsOptions, but it is a pain to have to set these everytime I send a fax in Vista. Where can I find the equivalent Vista Registry values?
Are there any good third party programs for doing Vista setting backups. In Xp I used backup genie. I don't care about files. that one can do manually But things like sound schemes, appearance, internet explorer setting, windows live mail, folder setting ect ect...
Just a quick question about the paging file.. I recently added more ram to my comp (im running vista home edition 32bit) my total ram is 2.5gb - what should i set my min and max paging file to now? After checking the web out, i now know how to access the settings for this procedure but am unsure of the min and max settings for the amount of ram i now currently have...
I'm not even sure if this is where I should post this but I'll give it a go. I purchased a new PC last week with Vista Home Premium on it. I have (for years) used MSN Premium software as my email program. Now, it seems I can't make this my default email program with Vista. I am going nuts! I have spoken to MSN support who tell me to do the same things over and over. I have also spoken to Microsoft support who told me I have to use Outlook or Windows Live mail instead.
It's really hard. I have taught my elderly parents how to use the MSN software and now we have to change - or do we? I've tried the email settings in MSN itself, I've tried associations for programs in Vista and also the default programs. Nothing is working. Surely, one Microsoft program should work with another? We pay for this software so that we can also have sub accounts on our email more storage than the usual hotmail space.
I hope this is the right place to post this question.. Well, basically i installed almost 5000 fonts couple days back. But now, photoshop just crashes whenever i'm trying to add text. I suspect it's got to do with the massive amount of fonts i installed. So here's my Q.. Is there anywhere i could download Vista's default fonts? All of them.. I'm not going through the whole font folder to try and make out which ones are default and which ones are added by me. It's going to take forever to do that.. So if i'm able to download the default fonts, i'll just do a mass delete of all fonts and install the defaults.. So anybody could assist me with that....
I just recently finished upgrading my system from an nfroce 4 based Athlon 64x2 to a quad phenom 9850 with an amd 790fx based motherboard. So far it's all gone very well except one nagging issue. My media center can no longer record TV and my Zune player keeps throwing out error messages regarding media rights needing to be reset. After checking the event log I confirmed that Media Center is also unhappy with the current DRM situation, I guess because the motherboard changed.
I've followed the steps outlined in this KB artical {url} but I've run into a snag. It points you to a website to update media rights but the site is broken, and I mean ompletely broken. All I get is a JS error saying invalid parameter, a generic MS gui and a continue button that is disabled and stays that way.
I recently started to use the monitor speakers - previously had the monitor volume turned right down. There is an annoying medium-high pitched hum thru. the speakers. The volume of the hum varies with the volume on the monitor, not the volume settings on Vista. Detaching the 3.5mm sound lead ( DVI lead attached )reduces the hum considerably. Detaching the DVI lead (sound lead attached ) removes the hum. Using VGA lead makes no difference. Have tried different sound drivers, different video drivers, reinstalled the o/s - makes no difference.
As the hum seems to be travelling down the DVI/VGA lead, tried a different graphics card ( with passive heatsink - no fan ) - makes no difference. Took the side off the pc and can just discern the same hum if I get my ear in the right place - from inside the pc. Detached the rear fan - no difference. Detached the mobo fan - no difference. The only thing left is the psu - could the fan noise/vibration be traveling via the graphics card to the monitor ?
I'm using a combination of the Vista backup to do a complete backup of my OS and applications (for emergency restore) and another backup tool to handle my data. My OS is on C: and my data on D: (and other drives). query is that C: will contain application settings/data - for example if I write actions in Photoshop they will be stored under the user application data subdirectory or if I create a DOT template for Word it will be stored under the hidden data directories for Word.
I want to be sure that I am backing up all of the vital application data/settings so that I can either restore just those or in an emergency can restore my full Vista backup (done weekly) and then restore the application data (which I want to backup daily). I've searched this set of forums and elsewhere to find something that lists which subdirectory tree(s) I need to ensure that I have backed up (and I guess I'll need to do a registry backup too each day just in case settings are stored there). I can't find such a list. Does anyone know of a document that details what the vital stuff to backup is?
This folder reverted for f-g Vista default MEDIA view, unsorted, with Filetype column removed but with Tags/rating and other UTTER SHEET added. The window was resized and placed at a random location. The foldertree was messed up & forgot my setting.
You Microsoft wonder why Vist awas a fisaco versus WindowsXP. Here's one example I just wanna spit and close this laptop, walk outside, and quit working. You can't focus on ANYTHING. The annoying persisten behavior is in your face, telling me that MICROSOFT DECIDES HOW MY FILE MANAGER SHOULD LOOK EVEN AFTER I SAVED ITS APEPARANCE AND MAINTAINED FOR A WEEK, IT SUDDENLY DECIDES to goback to default appearance you gret after unpacking thois piece of refuse that Vista is.
how to change the size of the HDD space Vista reserves for Restore points. I still would like to know;
1) What is the default HDD space Vista Reserves for System Restore Points? 2) Another reply to my Part 1 question indicated a user was experiencing the same issue, losing 3 to 4GB of HDD space a day...and Dell instructed that user to turn Off Restore to fix the problem. This to me is not a fix.
Given that I was losing 3 to 4GB space a day......was it as a Resullt of System Restore Points or could there be other issues? My PC is running fine except for this issue. CouldWould all New Restore Points save a file 3 to 4GB in size, and if that is so, does this Restore Point File just keep its size, grew Larger....and consume 3 to 4GB of HDD space daily and go on forever? This just doesn't seem so, I have been running this PC for nearly 2 years and I just saw this issue start about 2 weeks ago.....seems it started at or near the time of the Vista SP2 Download
how to get Windows to remember my modem settings. Every time I wake up or restart my computer I have to get Windows to reset my modem. This has only just started happening after I had help from Microsoft. They had me run a reset .bat to reset my services (in an effort to restart Security Center). It failed and I have since run Black Vipers "safe" settings and also turned off Media Center services. Microsoft help has left my computer in a worse state than it was before I went to them
