how to change the default setting of the Recent Items on the Start menu from alphabetical to date order in Vista Home Premium. I did it on my desktop a year ago- I seem to recall it was a Registry change- but on my laptop I'm stuck with the useless alphabetical order.

I've been to the Start Menu properties window, and under Privacy, I only have a single entry, "Store and display a list of recently opened programs". The corresponding entry for documents is missing. Furthermore, although I can check the one-and-only tick-box, the setting doesn't hold, and it's unchecked again next time I open Properties. I have a Recent Items folder (with the correct icon), deep in my User folder, but it's empty. I tried restoring the desktop.ini file from an early disk image, but although the restore appears to work according to the image program, the folder remains stubbornly empty. It's as though some system setting registry value has been set prohibiting the use or display of this Recent Items folder.

View 3 Replies View Relatedim having a problem with the startup menu on vista x64. ive installed vista everything went great. after installing i lookked at the all programs menu it had loads of icons for the likes of media centre and other free vista apps. anyway ive installed drivers some of my programs done a windows update downloaded all updates come back to the all programs menu and am missing loads of icons. i havent a clue how this as happend. look at this pic and i have lost everything in the list thats above windows update
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis has now happened to me twice, and it's pretty annoying. All the shortcut items in the root of the Start menu have disappeared. That is all the default Vista apps like Movie Maker, Picture Viewer, Mail etc, plus a few other things I've installed that place icons in the root list PhotoShop CS3. The sub folders are still there fine. The applications whose shortcuts are missing are also still there, it is just the Start menu shortcuts that have gone. I've looked in the C: drive where the Start Menu folders are (C:Users and C:ProgramData) and the shortcuts are indeed gone. Previous Versions doesn't show anything up either, so they're completely gone. After the first time this happened I copied the entries from my Laptop, and all has been fine for a few weeks, but they're gone again.AVG Free 8 reports no viruses, and both SpyBot and AdAware report nothing of any significance.

Command Prompt
Notepad
Run
Windows Explorer So, things such as "Wordpad" are missing.I would be grateful if someone could tell me what menu items are missing, and the links to those items.
I want to reorganize some of the items on the Windows Start Menu to make it more streamlined and functional. I am right clicking the Windows Start button and choosing "Explore All Users" as directed. It works fine for 85% of the items on the Start Menu but there are still several items on the menu that don't show up in the Start Menu/Programs directory that comes up to edit the menu. How do I access these other items? They must be listed somewhere.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a Vista Home Premium laptop for a friend. I created a standard user account for him, but I am using the administrator account myself while installing software and configuring everything. I disabled User Account Control for the admin account, because I was overwhelmed by warnings and prompts when doing all the installs and configs.
When logged in as administrator, I installed various apps including Start menu shortcuts and Quick Launch icons. However, when the standard user logs in, he doesn't see any of those shortcuts. Likewise, I want to place some folders on the desktop that will give him tips on how to use his new laptop and shortcuts to maintenance tasks. But, when I place them on "my" desktop, they are not available to him when he logs in as his standard user.
Is there some method that administrators use when setting up a new Vista system, so they can place Start menu shortcuts, Quick Launch icons, documents on desktop, etc. that will then be available in all user accounts (or even in specified user accounts)? Is there some way to do what I want, or am I asking the wrong questions?
I do not want to see any of the programs at the top of the list of All Programs (especially Internet Explorer). I just want to see the program folders listed, preferably sorted by newest or most recently modified first, by alphabetically would be OK. How to get rid of the 8 programs shown in here? Thanks.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is the Context Menu that I'm referring to, accessed by Start>Pictures>[Open a Folder to display thumbnails], Right-click on Thumbnail. With my current settings [where?], if I select and click on Edit, MS Windows Paint opens as the Default Editing Program. I don't like Paint at all, and want to change from that current Default Program, to allow my Pictures to be opened and edited by Picasa. Is there a method by which I can change that Context Menu, so that by clicking on Edit, the selected thumbnail automatically opens in Picasa And before anyone leaps in and suggests any other editing program from the plethora of others available [eg. Photoshop etc.], please don't waste your time - I'm not interested in them, as Picasa fulfills all of my basic photo editing requirements. Basically, I'm looking for a shortcut to open Picasa with just one click, as I'm aware that I can also get there through Open with, in the same Context Menu.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi runned some optimization programs on my vista system, and i think it changed something in the registry. Now, when i delete an item from recent items list on startup menu (right click -> delete), it displays "are you sure you want to move this item to the recycle bin? ". by clicking "yes", it moves the corresponding shortcut of this item into recycle bin.
before i runned this optimation, when i delete an item from recent items list, there is no this delete confirmation dialog, and it removes this item from recent items list without moving the shortcut to recycle bin. (for regular file delete operations, it asks for this confirmation and move files to recycle bin as usual. the only difference is about the deletion on recent items list.) is there a way to fix this problem? i don't want this delete confirmation dialog because i am only deleting a shortcut (not the exact file.)
I installed windows for the 21st time...(Yes it is 21) It's all working out but i found a glitch. When i changed the location of my pictures and music to an other location, all of them where working 100%. But then i had to change the letter of the drive they were on. Now when i click on them they don't do anything and if i right-click on it and go to properties it kind of freezes. A properties window appears but it's almost all white.

I searched on the internet this morning for options I found a recuva site that is supposed to recover files but i dont know if that will do it for my case? and if i defragement my disk leaving my usb in my pc but wont that delete whats in it? I wanted to know really if i could recover files from recent items and like change the location which is at the time k/: ( remouvable disk k) to c:/ my normal documents ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was trying to get rid of the "Recent Items" list from the startup (found the option to allow it or not, so that's not a problem anymore) but while doing so, I went to the source (/appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows) and dragged the icon to my desktop to see if that would work. What happened was I created another "Recent Items" icon on my desktop, which I can't move or delete. Plus, I still have the original one which I also can't move or delete. I don't want the one on my desktop anymore, is there any way to get rid of it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen you dump things in your recycle the icon changes to a pic of a full bin (as we all know) well mine doesnt , not until after a reeboot then it shows as having contents.
if i put something in my bin now , it will go into the bin , i can open the bin and its there to be recycled but the icon wont change , if i dont empty the bin upon next reboot the bin will show as having contents so im assuming its not the icon cache thats screwed up (i have rebuilt it just incase and ive checked the correct icons are selected)...

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am getting ready to use Brink's tutorial on setting a scheduled System Restore point each day and I noted that he said that it was standard for Vista to make a Restore point each day at start up and one at midnight. Last time I looked I did not have these in my list of points, so I checked to see if the startup and midnight points were indeed enabled to be created. They were. But when I went to look at System Restore points available I had none of the startup or midnight points available. Further checking showed that 2 days ago when I installed Nero 9, it made 40 restore points in the 17 minutes it took to install! Why would it do that? Does it make any sense? I made one before I installed it, and okay, I could see it might make one itself before the install, but ... 40??!
So, am I correct in assuming that because of these 40 restore points the system is now not able to save the StartUp and Midnight points because I also manually have made one or two per day over the past few days, so it keeps the manual ones and the Nero ones and throws out the System-created ones because there is not enough room and they are the lower priority? Or what is going on here? I did not change my default system restore storage size or anything, it is set at default settings.
when i start my computer i get nothing no icons start menu or anything but i do get a my documents window and from there i have to ctrl alt delete then go to file run and run explorer does anyone know how to make it to where i dont have to do all that stuff to run explorer basically does anyone know how to make it where when i start my computer it is normal with explorer running?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.
In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.
I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.
