It's time to take care of another issue. How are items removed from the right-click menu? There's a "Scan with Spybot" on the menu and it's been uninstalled months ago. View 9 Replies View RelatedThis has now happened to me twice, and it's pretty annoying. All the shortcut items in the root of the Start menu have disappeared. That is all the default Vista apps like Movie Maker, Picture Viewer, Mail etc, plus a few other things I've installed that place icons in the root list PhotoShop CS3. The sub folders are still there fine. The applications whose shortcuts are missing are also still there, it is just the Start menu shortcuts that have gone. I've looked in the C: drive where the Start Menu folders are (C:Users and C:ProgramData) and the shortcuts are indeed gone. Previous Versions doesn't show anything up either, so they're completely gone. After the first time this happened I copied the entries from my Laptop, and all has been fine for a few weeks, but they're gone again.AVG Free 8 reports no viruses, and both SpyBot and AdAware report nothing of any significance.

I want to reorganize some of the items on the Windows Start Menu to make it more streamlined and functional. I am right clicking the Windows Start button and choosing "Explore All Users" as directed. It works fine for 85% of the items on the Start Menu but there are still several items on the menu that don't show up in the Start Menu/Programs directory that comes up to edit the menu. How do I access these other items? They must be listed somewhere.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a Vista Home Premium laptop for a friend. I created a standard user account for him, but I am using the administrator account myself while installing software and configuring everything. I disabled User Account Control for the admin account, because I was overwhelmed by warnings and prompts when doing all the installs and configs.
When logged in as administrator, I installed various apps including Start menu shortcuts and Quick Launch icons. However, when the standard user logs in, he doesn't see any of those shortcuts. Likewise, I want to place some folders on the desktop that will give him tips on how to use his new laptop and shortcuts to maintenance tasks. But, when I place them on "my" desktop, they are not available to him when he logs in as his standard user.
Is there some method that administrators use when setting up a new Vista system, so they can place Start menu shortcuts, Quick Launch icons, documents on desktop, etc. that will then be available in all user accounts (or even in specified user accounts)? Is there some way to do what I want, or am I asking the wrong questions?
how to change the default setting of the Recent Items on the Start menu from alphabetical to date order in Vista Home Premium. I did it on my desktop a year ago- I seem to recall it was a Registry change- but on my laptop I'm stuck with the useless alphabetical order.

I have just installed Winzip 10 and there is no right click menu in explorer except for the usual Open/Send to etc, there is not "extract to here" Add to archive etc.
These are all selected in options/context menu commands.
Is there something in Vista 64 that is stopping it.
Noticed that when we right click on a folder, we do not see the search option anymore in Vista. Instead, we can see a search bar on the top right hand side in Windows Explorer (After opening the Folder/drive contents) Is there a setting/registry tweak?

To be more precise, I recently installed the K-Lite codec pack, and it has added an option on my right click menu, which is displayed when right clicking on any file, called "Media Info". This is quite annoying because I don't use the program often enough for it to be on my right click menu. So I would like that to be deleted.
I would also like to add an option to my right click menu that is displayed with any file called, "Scan with Spybot - Search & Destroy". And this should obviously scan with spybot. The directory for Spybot is the default:
C:Program FilesSpybot - Search & DestroySpybotSD.exe
Preferably, it should have the spybot logo next to the scan option, but I don't know whether this is asking alot.

My Recent Files item seems to have lost its special attributes and the right-click menu is now just a standard one, with no option to clear the list (if I want to do this, I now have to go to my roaming profile and delete the shortcuts manually). What caused this, and how do I fix it? (I searched for a sample of tooltip text like 'See the disk drives' in the registry, but nothing came up)

I know this isn't much but it should not take that long for something that small. I went ahead and removed many items from the context menu and the desktop and all other files load the context menu almost instantly. My problem is that .exe files still take 1-2 seconds to load their context menu. I tried removing almost ALL the options in the context menu.

I've been to the Start Menu properties window, and under Privacy, I only have a single entry, "Store and display a list of recently opened programs". The corresponding entry for documents is missing. Furthermore, although I can check the one-and-only tick-box, the setting doesn't hold, and it's unchecked again next time I open Properties. I have a Recent Items folder (with the correct icon), deep in my User folder, but it's empty. I tried restoring the desktop.ini file from an early disk image, but although the restore appears to work according to the image program, the folder remains stubbornly empty. It's as though some system setting registry value has been set prohibiting the use or display of this Recent Items folder.

Do you use notepad very frequently to open all types of text files? This quick tweak will add "Open with Notepad" to all of your file context menus. Whenever you right click on a file, you will have the option to open it in Notepad.

I'm using Vista Home Premium - I generally use Outlook 2007 for my e-mail and organising but recently went to Windows Mail to find a Newsgroup (unavailable in Outlook). However, no Newgroups were visible. Unable to find a way to find them I clicked on "Help" and the advice includes "Click the Tools menu, and then click Newsgroups." The keys then work ok until I reboot again.Is there any way that I can programme the changes so they are the default programmes whenever I reboot. After spending a lot of time trying to find a solution, here is the way I have solve the problem. Now the sidebar is just working fine. I've been using Windows Mail for 18 months without any significant problems.
Now, when I delete an email from my "Inbox," it does NOT appear in my "Deleted Items" folder. It just seems to disappear. I did read many of the earlier posts and have tried the suggestions. I've gone to Tools>Options>Advanced>Maintenance - the "Empty messages from the Deleted Items folder on exit" is NOT checked. I've also gone to Current View "Show all messages" - that's identified/checked. Is there something else that I can do? I'd appreciate any suggestions. This is the first time I've used
