How To Install Shortcuts, Start Menu Items, Etc For All User Accounts?

Jun 6, 2008

I am setting up a Vista Home Premium laptop for a friend. I created a standard user account for him, but I am using the administrator account myself while installing software and configuring everything. I disabled User Account Control for the admin account, because I was overwhelmed by warnings and prompts when doing all the installs and configs.

When logged in as administrator, I installed various apps including Start menu shortcuts and Quick Launch icons. However, when the standard user logs in, he doesn't see any of those shortcuts. Likewise, I want to place some folders on the desktop that will give him tips on how to use his new laptop and shortcuts to maintenance tasks. But, when I place them on "my" desktop, they are not available to him when he logs in as his standard user.

Is there some method that administrators use when setting up a new Vista system, so they can place Start menu shortcuts, Quick Launch icons, documents on desktop, etc. that will then be available in all user accounts (or even in specified user accounts)? Is there some way to do what I want, or am I asking the wrong questions?

Start Menu Shortcuts Not Working

May 28, 2008

I did some digging and found some situations that sound similar to my problem, but none covered the same issue I'm seeing. I've been running Vista for several months now. At some time in the last week or two, many of my Start Menu shortcuts have stopped working. If I look at the properties of those shortcuts, it seems to be the ones that don't have an actual path in the Target field. E.g. Word as "Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003" instead of an actual path to WINWORD.EXE, and that shortcut doesn't work. Nothin happens when you select it. However the shortcut to Notepad has "%SystemRoot%system32otepad.exe" in its Target field, and it works just fine.

This only happens with SOME of the shortcuts. E.g. the "recently used" list of shortcuts in the Start menu does this, and if I type WinKey-WORD and select the Microsoft Word shortcut that shows up there, it doesn't work. But if I select the Word shortcut under Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office, it works just fine -- even though it also has the non-path Target field. What has happened to these "special" shortcuts? How do I fix it and prevent this from happening again?

Office 07 Shortcuts In Start Menu No Work

May 2, 2009

Office 07 shortcuts from the start menu no longer work. Nothing happens when you click on them - the start menu stays open. Also, the icons of the shortcuts have turned into just a paper icon.

I should also note that even the icons on the documents have changed. Though, when I double click on documents, they still open the corresponding program. Another way I can open the programs is by going into the Program Files. I have searched with Google with only a handful of people having my problem, though their thread isn't answered.

Start Menu Items Disappearing

Jun 3, 2008

This has now happened to me twice, and it's pretty annoying. All the shortcut items in the root of the Start menu have disappeared. That is all the default Vista apps like Movie Maker, Picture Viewer, Mail etc, plus a few other things I've installed that place icons in the root list PhotoShop CS3. The sub folders are still there fine. The applications whose shortcuts are missing are also still there, it is just the Start menu shortcuts that have gone. I've looked in the C: drive where the Start Menu folders are (C:Users and C:ProgramData) and the shortcuts are indeed gone. Previous Versions doesn't show anything up either, so they're completely gone. After the first time this happened I copied the entries from my Laptop, and all has been fine for a few weeks, but they're gone again.AVG Free 8 reports no viruses, and both SpyBot and AdAware report nothing of any significance.

Edit Windows Start Menu Items?

Jun 7, 2008

I want to reorganize some of the items on the Windows Start Menu to make it more streamlined and functional. I am right clicking the Windows Start button and choosing "Explore All Users" as directed. It works fine for 85% of the items on the Start Menu but there are still several items on the menu that don't show up in the Start Menu/Programs directory that comes up to edit the menu. How do I access these other items? They must be listed somewhere.

User Accounts Do Not Fully Start Up Blue Screen

Mar 26, 2008

All new accounts I create on Vista home premium do not login properly. When a user logs in the explorer.exe process does not start (the user just sees blank blue screen). It is possible to launch the task manager and start processes by hand. I found a suggestion on another post that said there was an incorrect "Shell" registry entry that could be the cause of the problem, but that was not the case here. The Shell key is correctly set to "explorer.exe". If the users log in under safe mode, the desktop loads correctly.

No User Name On Start Menu?

May 1, 2009

i installed vista a few weeks ago...being the economical person i am, i decided to go thru all my extraneous directories that windows installs and delete a few things i know i'd never use...mostly public junk, etc etc...i also understand that vista is smart, actually modifying what it shows you depending on the things you use most, bla bla bla.. i'm the only one using my puter and i've set the account up with admin priviledges..

just recently, i've noticed that my name is no longer displayed in the start menu just above the "documents" button & underneath my display picture, and i'm concerned about it...i'm thinking maybe it had something to do with those directories i've deleted in the public area...OR maybe vista just realised that by now i'm the only one who ever touches my puter and has chosen to assume it's always me and not show my name anymore.. i don't know but i'd like to know why this is happening, and if i choose to, how i can restore it? i've tried in the policy manager but none of those settings seem to make a difference...

Missing "Recent Items" Entry In Start Menu

Jun 23, 2008

my Recent Items list has disappeared. I've been to the Start Menu properties window, and under Privacy, I only have a single entry, "Store and display a list of recently opened programs". The corresponding entry for documents is missing. Furthermore, although I can check the one-and-only tick-box, the setting doesn't hold, and it's unchecked again next time I open Properties. I have a Recent Items folder (with the correct icon), deep in my User folder, but it's empty. I tried restoring the desktop.ini file from an early disk image, but although the restore appears to work according to the image program, the folder remains stubbornly empty. It's as though some system setting registry value has been set prohibiting the use or display of this Recent Items folder.

Sent Items Folder For Multiple Accounts In Windows Mail

Aug 12, 2009

Okay, here it goes. I first started using Windows Mail when I bought a new computer with Windows Vista back in January '09. I have four email accounts which I transferred over from an Outlook Express backup that I did before getting rid of my old computer. Windows Mail automatically set up a set of folders (Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Drafts and Junk E-mail) for each account, each with a different color scheme, similar to Windows Live Mail. My hard drive crashed in June and I'm just now setting things up again with the new hard drive installed. I tried restoring my email accounts from a backup I had but now Windows Mail won't automatically create folders for each account. Instead, I had to set up separate Inbox folders with message rules for each account. However, all the accounts are still sharing the Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Drafts and Junk E-mail folders. Is there a way to set up a set of these folders for each account using message rules? And also, why did Windows Mail do that automatically for me the first time using it - could it be that the information came from an Outlook Express backup originally?

Set Up User Windows Accounts

I'm trying to use the account function where you supposedly can set up your home account and then your work account in Windows Mail. Having done away with identities, you have to use tools->accounts to set them up. I have two accounts set up, one is me, the other is support, but I can't seem to find out how to switch between them. When I set them to be the default account, each in its turn it merged all the messages in my inbox view.

User Accounts Not Starting

Apr 7, 2008

Restarting a PC (DELL Inspiron 530 running Vista Home Premium) after check-disk run on start-up starts Windows to the 'Welcome' screen. However, logging into any of the user accounts initially produces the next 'Welcome' screen and the little 'wait' circle but then it goes black and only the white cursor is displayed, nothing else happens. In safe mode, the user account loads normally.

Prehistory: The PC had started to do odd things a while ago: take very very long to shut down, more or less freeze on some of the limited user accounts (the boys'), not shut down at all, and similar. Today, as a further attempt to right things, I ran the MS Disk Cleanup (normally I use CCleaner) and Check Disk option on start-up. That reported quite a lot of problems and fixes and took a long time.

If this is the case then it's way too much fooling around for my liking and I'll stick with the administrator account.

User Accounts, Downloaded Software

Mar 20, 2009

I'm trying to set up a new Vista PC and am confused about Admin. account and user acct.s, as far as for example, I downloaded Google Chrome while in Admin.account. It works and the short cuts are there but I cannot figure out how to get the shortcuts to the other user accounts, I did search and find the chrome.exe in, "C:Master AccountAppDataLocalGoogleApplicationChrome.exe."

I then went into 'share' and made this location shared and redid them as co-owner, I still cannot find the chrome.exe in the individual user accounts in order to open it up.
