Recently Changed: Left Side Documents Screen

new to the forum... I recently tried to click on my " recently changed" link on the left side of my documents screen, and got this messege, " The item " recently changed.search-ms" that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this short cut will no longer work properly. Do you wish to delete this short cut?" I dont remember deleteing it, and was wondering if anyones seen this before. I'm not really sure if I need this shortcut, but was just wondering if I messed something up inadvertantly. I just recently added a 1TB HDD, but I dont think that had anything to do with the missing shortcut. I have a tendency to do a "delete sweep" in what I thought were like the old temp files...didnt realize this was a shortcut to actual files. Should I try to get the reently changed short cut working again?

If I change the Start Menu to the Classic Start Menu and then select Customize the Clear button doesn't clear the recently accessed documents. Is there a way to to cler the recent accessed documets?

my full desktop is filled with sidebar gadgets, but I am facing a = strange problem, the gadgets keep on moving from right (hand side) to = left, the movement though is very slow. I have found that it moves only = when I start the laptop. Can I stop this movement.

I have Vista 6.0 (Build 6001; service pack 1) I'm also running Norton Internet Security. When I go to a website like MySpace most of the pictures are blank and have x's in them. Also if I click on a link before the page finishes loading I get a small icon on the lower left side of with a yellow error flag.

I have Vista Home Premium on an Acer Laptop and all was fine until I decided to change my user password. I had or have (who knows now at this stage) an Administrator,User and HDD password installed on my machine. I went into my setup and changed my user password from set to clear but left my other passwords at set. when I exited and saved changes and rebooted I could not get back in with any and all passwords. To make things worse I cannot boot from cd either. It goes to press <F2> go to setup , Enter Current Password: ? then Invalad password I have tried the F10, F12, Del, F5, F8 keys and nothing seems to get past that login screen. Does anyone have any inexpensive suggestions on how I can get into this computer, or how I can get to a command prompt. Can I un-solder the internal Battery and then re attach it.

"Settings.ini is being used by another process. Close the other program and then click retry, or Click Cancel to exit side bar" I get this error message each time I log on to a user account, how do i get rid of it? I do not have a side bar on the screen!. Also when internet explorer comes up i get a blank page which i cannot get rid of by clicking the red X box in the top right hand corner. Appologies if this info is sketchy but am a novice with my laptop, can probably provide more information if needed,

I have my desktop set up so that the sidebar is on the left side of the screen, simply because I like it better that way, but now whenever I install a new program or download a file from online, which downloads to my desktop, it always appears under the sidebar. Is there any way to make new icons default to the right side of the desktop instead of the left?

This has happened to me before - somehow the folder formats change themselves, eg the documents folder has options along the top like 'organise' 'view''slideshow' and 'burn' ie like in the pictures folder. I found the answer once before in one of the forums, but can't remember where it was. And why does this happen? Also, when I go to 'Help & support" in the Start button, it defaults to Lenovo (my hardware mfg) instead of Microsoft Windows.

I tried searching the forums, but couldn't find a solution.I often work with two windows at once (i.e. firefox and excel) and have been trying to figure out how to dock them next to each other so I can work with them easier. I assume this is a simple fix, I just haven't been able to find it yet.

My problem is this: I am running Windows Vista 64 bit on an ASUS laptop and, after some "experimenting" with binding EXE's on XP and moving them over to Vista, I started receiving the dreaded error message "This program has failed to start because it's side by side configuration is incorrect". Now, I'm no noob when it comes to computers. But I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this problem. THe most common solution I have found is to install the Visual C++ Redistributable, thing is. When I run the installation EXE, the same error appears. I have attempted running in safe mode, system restore, and all the usual options, and every thread with this same problem is often ignored, therefore I have not been able to find a solution.

First thanks for all the tutorials they are great and easy to follow. I was wondering however I followed the steps set out for specifying the default screensaver, yet it can still be changed. I only have one account on my computer and it is the administrator account. My OS is Vista Home Premium x64. Is there a way I can lock it to a specific screensaver so it cannot be changed?

I am running Windows Home Premimum 64 bit. I started having numerous problems a couple of weeks ago, including: Screen resolution was changed, Clear Type and User Account Control were disabled, computer would stop responding temporarily of lock up completely, blue screen at boot up or computer would boot to recovery console, monitor would be on at boot up but would not come out of sleep mode. Finally last night the key board and mouse (both wired) stopped working. I changed the mouse and keyboard to ones that used usb connectors and was able to boot up again, and this keyboard and mouse work, but still having performance issues (hanging, 3D screen saver runs jerky. I tried to run Trend Micro Housecall but could not get to run. I tried to update the Nvidia drivers several times and my computer would shut down before the installtion was completed everytime. I would get a blue screen with the notice that the computer had been shut down to protect it from damage. Norton 360 found nothing. I have since uninstalled Norton. Ran AVG, nothing.
Finally Kaspersky online deep scan found these:

I changed my screen resolution in order to better view a video. When I changed it back, the Send/Receive window that shows incoming and outgoing mail popped up far to the left of the Windows Mail window, instead of right above it where it has always been. I re-started the computer, but that did not fix the problem. I want to get the Send/Receive window to pop up where it used to--it is currently nconvenient for viewing.

I just installed a ATI Sapphire 4830 DDR3 Video card.My motherboard has on board video,ATI 4200?? I booted up was still using on board video.I uninstalled ATI drivers and software. The screen blinked and changed to 88x600,looked like safe mode.It said to restart.I booted up and no video.I tried onboard and new card.I know it is booting into windows.I can hear the music. I tried getting into bios,will not go to bios.Now the screen probably is asking do I want to restart windows or Bla Bla Bla.
What can I do to get some video back .I do not care if it is onboard Just before I deleted drivers I looked in Device manager and did not see the new card.Probably because of drivers not installed??It should of shown The PCI-2 slot.No??

I have a Vista PC with a large screen LCD screen attached to it. What I want to do is use a Vista Tablet to be able to control the large screen so can present documents on it such as PowerPoint slide shows and be able to use the functions of the tablet i.e. using the stylus pen to add notes on top of the current document shown on the large screen. Basically use the large screen as a external monitor but have it connect through a wireless network. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so what do I need to get it working.

I have Vista Ultimate. Recently I have noticed that my Weborook Antispyware has been catching more things, including one virus today, and I wonder if it is because I now have att email (I used to have MSN dialup before) or if it is due to the new updates made to it after Windows 7 was released, which might have loosened its security or added new ways for spyware or malware to get in?

I have a Privacy problem with Vista???s list of recently opened files. I have already unchecked the box to Store and display a list of recently opened files in Start Menu, and Windows has stopped showing these files on my desktop. However, my sensitive filenames still exist in the Vista search folders, here-> Users/myname/Searches/Recent....).
So I deleted all of the (Recent....) folders in the Searches folder. That seemed to fix part of the problem. However, my sensitive filenames still exist in the specific Vista search folder named Indexed Locations?. I tried rebuilding the search index but these filenames still persist, even in the newly rebuilt index. The actual files exist on a disk that is NOT INCLUDED in indexing. They seem to be included because they are recent, and not because they are being indexed........

I applied this to fix the missing clear recent list problem in start menu: "Clear Recent Items List" option missing when you right-click on the Recent folder However, the problem returns frequently and the option is missing again. I also have this other problem where every time I reboot, the "store and display recently opened files" is unchecked and therefore the feature does not show up in the start menu. I have to re-check it everytime after a reboot. This is very annoying. Note: this problem was always happening prior to installing both Wise software. Also, I have always used CCleaner without such problems, for over 2 years. On a side note, it seems the problem *may* have started around the time I installed SP1.

I didn't have this annoyance in WinXP but I do in WinVista. It forgets recently opened text files for example, I have a daily "note" file which gets registered in "Recendly Opened Docs" (click Start-->Documents) for ONE sesssion, if I reboot or just work for many hours/next day it's not there and I have to go search in WinExplorer for the d*** file?
Please don't tell me to turn ON Taskbar options "store & display a list of recently open files/prgrams" - those options are both on, also I've been doing computers for decades.Something else is going on here, it's not my settings at fault.Plus, ironically Vista remembers a bunch of OLD files I opened ages ago and still listed as "recently opened" I am tired of looking up for files (in File System/WinExplorer) which I used
to open with TWO CLICKS in WinXP. Yes I can place them all in a conveniently accessible folder, but do NOT want to, it's user's right to keep files where user wants to, especially b/c duplicates/confusion would arise & my system is loaded with a Million files.

For some reason the icons are missing on some programs in the "recently opened programs" list. Ive tried right click start menu and uncheck->check under privacy. If i create a shortcut to the program on the desktop, the icon reappears in the start menu.

I looked but couldn't find this issue elsewhere. I noticed that when I opened my files, there were extra MY DOCUMENTS folders. Other people who used this computer apparently messed around and copied MY DOCUMENTS folders. I tried to remedy the mess, but did so when I was tired, and seem to have made matters worse. Now, when I go to the Start Menu> Documents the documents are not there. I am at a loss as to how to fix this.

A very small problem compared to some of you here but........
I think the side bar is great - nice feature BUT why does it keep
disappearing on my computer?
It is there on the desktop when I first switch on computer and then when I
open 3-4 windows and then click on the desk top icon and go back to
desktop - it has disappeared!
And yet if I minimize the windows and go back to desktop this way - there it
is!
If the window I am using is not full screen - I can see it - and yet if I
click on desk top to go back to desk top

When I bring up a news group, it runs out of control with the sidebar running all the way to the bottom. And I can't bring it back to the top. The only way I can do this is to unplug my USB plug which controls the mouse. Once I do that I can pull the sidebar back up to the top just perfectly, by using the mouse pad on the laptop. If I plug the usb plug back in (for the mouse) the sidebar crashes to the bottom of the screen. I am using a M1710 Dell Laptop. It works great but this problem of the sidebar running out of control while the usb mouse is in use, is a new one. At the same time the screen saver won't work either.
