I have a Privacy problem with Vista???s list of recently opened files. I have already unchecked the box to Store and display a list of recently opened files in Start Menu, and Windows has stopped showing these files on my desktop. However, my sensitive filenames still exist in the Vista search folders, here-> Users/myname/Searches/Recent....).
So I deleted all of the (Recent....) folders in the Searches folder. That seemed to fix part of the problem. However, my sensitive filenames still exist in the specific Vista search folder named Indexed Locations?. I tried rebuilding the search index but these filenames still persist, even in the newly rebuilt index. The actual files exist on a disk that is NOT INCLUDED in indexing. They seem to be included because they are recent, and not because they are being indexed........
I applied this to fix the missing clear recent list problem in start menu: "Clear Recent Items List" option missing when you right-click on the Recent folder However, the problem returns frequently and the option is missing again. I also have this other problem where every time I reboot, the "store and display recently opened files" is unchecked and therefore the feature does not show up in the start menu. I have to re-check it everytime after a reboot. This is very annoying. Note: this problem was always happening prior to installing both Wise software. Also, I have always used CCleaner without such problems, for over 2 years. On a side note, it seems the problem *may* have started around the time I installed SP1.
For some reason the icons are missing on some programs in the "recently opened programs" list. Ive tried right click start menu and uncheck->check under privacy. If i create a shortcut to the program on the desktop, the icon reappears in the start menu.
I didn't have this annoyance in WinXP but I do in WinVista. It forgets recently opened text files for example, I have a daily "note" file which gets registered in "Recendly Opened Docs" (click Start-->Documents) for ONE sesssion, if I reboot or just work for many hours/next day it's not there and I have to go search in WinExplorer for the d*** file?
Please don't tell me to turn ON Taskbar options "store & display a list of recently open files/prgrams" - those options are both on, also I've been doing computers for decades.Something else is going on here, it's not my settings at fault.Plus, ironically Vista remembers a bunch of OLD files I opened ages ago and still listed as "recently opened" I am tired of looking up for files (in File System/WinExplorer) which I used to open with TWO CLICKS in WinXP. Yes I can place them all in a conveniently accessible folder, but do NOT want to, it's user's right to keep files where user wants to, especially b/c duplicates/confusion would arise & my system is loaded with a Million files.
I have been sending files to Thailand under a native format of *.LZH Both of us read the files as automatically changed to *.RAR under XP which we both had. Now my colleague has bought a Vista laptop, the *.RAR files cannot be opened. Is winrar free anywhere? any pointers or "heads up" regarding this?
At times a Vista laptop cannot save opened files to the Vista desktop. It freezes the word processor we use. The desktop will always freeze on shutdown and the amount of memory used often drops by a hundred MDs or more. After weeks of documenting when this happened, we discovered that it seems to happen on days we do a backup. We use Robocopy to backup. there is a patch on the MS website we are trying, but does anyone have any more information about problems with Robocopy?
My wife and I have two seperate accounts, however I get her email, and she also can receive my email. Is there any way to change that like "Outlook Express" ? Or do I just tell the wife we need to trust each other with our e-mail?
Windows Internet Explorer 7 has included a easy new way to protect your privacy by erasing your browsing history and temporary files. This feature will clear your browsing history, delete all of your cookies, delete saved web form data and passwords as well as erase all temporary Internet files. Before you had to complete a series of steps to clear all of theses items or download privacy software, now you can clear all in just one click of a button....
More than half of the internet’s top websites use a little known capability of Adobe’s Flash plugin to track users and store information about them, but only four of them mention the so-called Flash Cookies in their privacy policies, UC Berkeley researchers reported Monday. Unlike traditional browser cookies, Flash cookies are relatively unknown to web users, and they are not controlled through the cookie privacy controls in a browser. That means even if a user thinks they have cleared their computer of tracking objects, they most likely have not. What’s even sneakier? You Deleted Your Cookies? Think Again.
Every time you open up a document or launch a program Windows Vista keeps track of this information to build the list of application for recently run applications and recent documents list. This can be a convenience or it can be a privacy problems if you use a shared computer. If that is the case, then anyone that uses the computer after you can see what applications you like to run and also see the name of the documents or photos that you looked at.
In Windows Vista Microsoft has provided a easy way to tweak this setting. Follow the steps below to protect your privacy:
Right click on the taskbar and select Properties....
there are hundreds of applications out there from spyware cleaners to built-in browser features that eliminate cookies on the spot, and even let you set cookie policies on your computer regarding what can be stored in your machine, and for how long. i’m assuming that if you’re here reading this post, you already know all of the dangers of cookies on your computer. in all honesty, i don’t seriously believe that they’re the most dangerous form of movement or web tracking, but they can definitely be used to monitor more movements than a person should feel comfortable with.
what if there was a type of cookie that could:
stay on your computer for an unlimited amount of time store 100 kb of data by default, with an unlimited max couldn’t be deleted by your browser send previous visit information and history, by default, without your permission okay… that’s a pretty scary cookie. as it is right now, the cookies we’re so deadly afraid of can store a maximum of 4 kb of information, are manage by your browser, and by default have reasonable defaults and restrictions. this type of cookie exists on 98% of global computers, across all operating systems. it’s the adobe flash player.
the adobe flash player maintains proprietary cookies called local shared objects or lso’s. lso’s are capable of storing 100 kb’s of information for an indefinite amount of time by default. when you clear your browser history in internet explorer, firefox or opera on windows, linux, or os x lso’s are not cleared from adobe’s local repository.
in fact, all the information in those cookies will remain indefinitely until they’re removed by the issuing website, or by you via a cumbersome and ridiculous process. unfortunately, i haven’t even explained the worst of it.
there’s no easy way to tell what sites are using flash cookies to track your movements. there’s no list, and there doesn’t have to be a flash gui or visible application for flash cookies to be present. in fact, most websites using flash for user tracking don’t create gui’s, toolbars, or applications that you can actually see in your browser while browsing the site.
many times a tiny flash module, 2 kb in size or less is loaded into your browser on every page visit in the same way a gif, jpg or other image is. the whole purpose of this tiny, invisible flash module might be to simply record the page request, and your username or other session variables.
alright, so now you’re sufficiently convinced that this is creepy stuff. let’s talk about how to get rid of it?
lame as it might be, the flash player has no ability to delete cookies. and as i’ve already said, your browser can’t help you out. it doesn’t even know these cookies exist! most of the privacy settings for adobe flash have be accessed via a flash application on adobe’s website called the adobe flash player settings manager.
if you want to access the settings manager, you can do so here. in fact, open it up now and let’s take a look.
if you’ve clicked the link above, then you’re looking at the flash player settings manager, and a list of all the sites currently storing information on the cookies stored on your computer.
looking at my list, i see over 100 websites that have been accessing the same cookie for the last year (the last time i formatted my computer). some of them are storing only 1kb of information, some are storing the full 100 kb’s. on my own computer, i see that my bank is storing flash information despite the fact that there isn’t a single flash application visible when i log in to check my balance. i see Internet, cnn, microsoft, rotten tomatoes and a ton more!
to delete all the flash cookies currently being stored on your machine:
go to the settings manager (website storage settings) go to the far-right tab click
“delete all sites” to prevent websites from storing any more information on your computer:
go to settings manager click the second tab from the left (global storage settings) set the storage settings slider to none uncheck “allow third party flash content to store data on your computer there are several other “privacy” settings on the other tabs, but don’t be persuaded. most of those privacy settings have to do with whether or not websites can access your microphone and webcam. there isn’t a single cookie option on any of the privacy tabs on the settings manager.
adobe, as a global leader in browser technology (a 98% computer market share), has a responsibility to make privacy options easily accessible from within the player application itself. they also have a responsibility to set reasonble default limitations. it’s ridiculous that they would enable websites to store cookies indefinitely, and in such large sizes.
I have Vista Ultimate. Recently I have noticed that my Weborook Antispyware has been catching more things, including one virus today, and I wonder if it is because I now have att email (I used to have MSN dialup before) or if it is due to the new updates made to it after Windows 7 was released, which might have loosened its security or added new ways for spyware or malware to get in?
Is it possible to clear the 'Recently e-mailed' contact list that appears when you click the 'TO' button in New mssage. Probably very simple or answered before but I can't see it.
If I change the Start Menu to the Classic Start Menu and then select Customize the Clear button doesn't clear the recently accessed documents. Is there a way to to cler the recent accessed documets?
a few hours ago, suddenly when i open wmp and i go to the left side and click the recently added items on the library (music,video,photo...) it says that there are no items that have been added recently. why it says that?
new to the forum... I recently tried to click on my " recently changed" link on the left side of my documents screen, and got this messege, " The item " recently changed.search-ms" that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this short cut will no longer work properly. Do you wish to delete this short cut?" I dont remember deleteing it, and was wondering if anyones seen this before. I'm not really sure if I need this shortcut, but was just wondering if I messed something up inadvertantly. I just recently added a 1TB HDD, but I dont think that had anything to do with the missing shortcut. I have a tendency to do a "delete sweep" in what I thought were like the old temp files...didnt realize this was a shortcut to actual files. Should I try to get the reently changed short cut working again?
When my e-mail list comes up it is on the top half of my screen. What ever is high lighted it is on the bottom half of the screen. I have to high lite it to delete but it is then opened. I don't want to let myself open to some type of virus.
My OS is V-home premium 64bit. I've owned this Dell for about 3 weeks and have never been able to open Media Center. When clicked, I get this error message:
C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727mscorwks.dll could not be loaded. I had a Dell Tech log into my computer to find "patches," etc. To no avail. His only advice was to restore back to new.
By the way, opening ehshell.exe gives me the exact same message. I thought I had found the correct patch re: framework applications in the Win Knowledge Base. After a complex set of downloads I finally ended up with the same error message. Is there something I can do short of full restore?
On Monday morning, as usual checking mail in office using windows mail, all attachment was able to open (through the paper clip icon or save into other location.
Then after lunch, all type of attachment (picture, excel, words, pdf.) can not be open through the paper clip icon. Then i try to save it and open again, these message pop up "there was an error saving one or more of the attachments. Please check your free disk space and try again", i can't safe the attachment.
If forwarded to other people, it's ok, open and view as normal.
Another thing I encounter, i can't open web based email attachment as well, since I'd forward (to try) the office attachment mail to my personal account.
I try to save it, the saving process as usual, but when saving is done, the file was not saved at all.
I'm using Vista Home basic, Version 6.0 (build 6002: SP2)
Window mail Version 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)
I have Win defender ON, and AVG free edition, Version 9.0.708
Some said it's IE 8 causing the problem, so i uninstall it, the same problem happened. now I'm using IE 7 (Version 7.0.6002.18005)
it all started after i downloaded a file and started to install it. first thing that happened was i got an error message saying g.exe couldn't be opened. so i closed it and thought it was funky for it to happen at the time. i also didn;t think it was a file of importance and we all know how windows is. so i figured a restart n i would be ok. i restarted and i got a rundll error C:/windows/system32/ " the specified module could not be found" ( opnnnoMd.dll ) i did find the file after some searching in the syswow64 folder. and it had been modified around the same time i had the error of g.exe...so i did some searching bout g.exe and found it could be a virus.... i have norton ran an update and scan...found nothing
I tried to delete a template in "My Templates) in "Word". It would not go the the recyle bin as a file was opened in another program. I discovered that when I went Word I get Document 1. I then click the Office Button. Click on close and get a faded screen. Click the Office Button again and the only options are:
Open Open from Office Live Save to Office Live
Is this the open file? If it is how do I delete it?
I can not see my iMac DV from my Vista PC. I have them both on the same workgroup. I can see the Vista PC from the iMac, but when I select it and try to login, I get the following error, "the alias could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found". My Mac is running OS 10.3. why Vista can not see this iMac?
I'm using the Windows Mail that came with Vista Home Premium (Sp1). How does one increase the border between windows in Mail? The thickness of the border seems to be one or two pixels wide and it's a real pain to zero in on the correct place to resize a window. If this is a common question that has already been answered, forgive me.
My problem is that whenever I transfer image files from my digicam to my portable hard disk, some files get broken. This does not happen when I transfer the image files to the local hard disk. What I do is transfer the files directly from my memory card to my portable hard disk since I don't have my cable right now.
I tried using other image viewers such as ACDSee and XnView but still, the files can't be opened. I've also tried changing my portable hard disk from a Logitec to an I-O Data but still, the same problem persists. I tried saving the files first on the local hard disk and then moving them to the portable hard disk but to no avail.
When I opened my text, the fonts were colored red and there was a strikethrough on every line. I was able to see how it could be done in the fonts section, but I don't remember doing it. I need to know how to undo it.
Today i recieved a USB to Playstation 2 Adapter that i ordered from eBay, so i ran upstairs, plugged it in and checked game controllers to make sure it was there, and it was. So i plugged in my Logitech Cordless Action controller and the lights flashed and the receiver flashed so i assumed it was connected. Opened up X-plane and tested it out and nothing, did a bit of googleing and found a driver/program for the adapter, installed it and still nothing. Im wondering if it is because the controller i am using is wireless, but if it worked on my Playstation then it should work with this adapter, right? I hope this can be sorted as the Vista Forum has sorted lots of my problems out before.
I am using Windows Mail as my default mail client. After installing Office 2007 I opened Outlook 2007 for some reason and configured my mail account there. Since that time I am not able to search for mails using Vista Search. If Windows Mail is configured as standard mail application (has every standard) mails can be found, but not opened. An error message is displayed which tells me, that no standard mail client is available (in German: "Es ist kein standardm=E4=DFiger E-Mail-Client vorhanden, oder der aktuelle E-Mail-Client kann die Messaginganforderung nicht erf=FCllen..."). Then I configured Outlook as my standard mail client, which didn't solve my issue, because the message is not displayed any more, but the mail cann't be opened.
Each time I start Windows Mail again, ALL my (150 or so!) folders and subfolders are opened (unfolded)!!! This drives me crazy... Apparently, this does not happen when I close my folders, close Windows Mail and start it again, but only when the system is restarted (not set into sleeping state with Windows Mail staying open, but really restarted). I have even unchecked the option to automatically open the folders with unread messages, though I would like this one to work like in OE, but it did not suppress the problem. I cannot find another option to NOT develop the folders... 99% of my messages were imported from OE, if it may be a clue...
i just bought a Toshiba laptop which has 4 GB RAm and 512GB Nvidia dedicated VRAM. When i opened DXDIAG it says that the available virtual memory is 2000+MB. So can i run(not play ,I have a PS3 for gaming ) high-end games or some middle-end games like GTA IV?
I have a friend who asked me to look at his HPA1737C desktop running Vista Home Premium tonight and most, if not all of his System32 processes, are no longer accessible. System Restore, Device Manager, MSCONFIG. etc cannot be opened and seemingly also anything System32 file related. Even the Volume icon in Taskbar has a Red X on it. I placed computer in SafeMode and selected Restore To Last Known Good Configuration and it had no affect on restoring. I could access the internet with IE7 and he can send email with no problems. Cannot uninstall or install any applications. He did install some Windows Updates KB867812, KB959772, KB960225, and KB958690 a few days back, but I see nothing in the Vista Newsgroup that would make these possibly related to his problem. Has Norton AV with latest definitions and full scan indicates no problems. I have set up a few Vista systems, but my expertise is XP related.
