I can not see my iMac DV from my Vista PC. I have them both on the same workgroup. I can see the Vista PC from the iMac, but when I select it and try to login, I get the following error, "the alias could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found". My Mac is running OS 10.3. why Vista can not see this iMac?

I have a Vista PC and an XP PC and on the Vista PC, I can not change the Workgroup to the name of my home workgroup. I get an network error message when I click on the Apply button. There are no special characters or spaces in my home workgroup name. What's interesting is that when I do a Query of the Network computers on the Vista PC, I can navigate to the folders that are shared on the XP PC. The problem I'm having is that I am trying to share a printer that is physically connected to the XP machine with the Vista PC. Even though both PC's are on the same physical network but on different Workgroups, I can see my XP machine, which I thought was not possible, if you're on two different workgroups. I have temporarily turned off the Firewall on both computers, but I get the same network error message.

We have a local workgroup setup and five or six departments have been give net connectivity. All our computers have xp installed, and when a new computer is loaded with xp, it used to detect the internet connection straight away, and would connect to the net. Now I have been asked to use vista so that slowly our organization can migrate to vista. I loaded vista on another partition on my computer. Everything was okay. But vista has not recognized my net connection. It has been asking for isp username and password, which were never asked by xp. So now
1. How to make vista understand that I have already a LAN card on my motherboard and my computer is connected to the net through the central server? Our net administrator would not divulge the username and password. He asked me to find out other means:"When xp can, why can't vista recognize?" was his question.
2. Once the connection is established, how do I connect to my workgroup? Just as in xp, my giving the workgroup name?
SO we bought a new dell with vista 32 biz on it. We have a workgroup comprised of 4 xp machines. One of them is the "server" basically a share that we use to run a program on all the clients. They are all networked with a cisco 8 port switch. There is no domain in this setup either just the switch and the other pc's. I can not get the vista pc onto the workgroup. The switch shows no link light from the new pc and the pc acts like there is no cable plugged in. I'm sure all the hardware
is working too.
What determines whether a machine will appear in Network Places? I'm not asking for boilerplate information about Windows Networking or the uninformative Help content for Vista Networking which is reposted at the Microsoft web site with no additional information.
I want to know where I can get substantive information that can help me determine why one of my XP machines is accessible from my Vista machine -- as in I can add its shared folders to "My Computer" -- but does not appear in the Network Places folder or in the tree in the common file dialogs. On the XP side, the Vista Public tree is visible and acessible from the invisible XP machine but I can't browse the workgroup. I have a home network that consists off an XP Desktop, a Vista Desktop, a XP Notebook and a Vista Tabletpc. They could all see and access each other with no problem. The Tabletpc and Notebook both are connected by wireless while the desktops are connected by Cat5.This morning I went to use the Tabletpc and it cannot see either of the other computers and they cannot see the Tabletpc., regarless whether I am connected by wireless or Cat5. However, they can see and access each other fine. The other three computers can see and access each other fine.I have tried everything I can think of to get the tabletpc to recongnize the other computers an vise-versa to no avail.The last time I used the tabletpc on my home network was about 8 days ago and it was working fine. That night I was admitted to the hospital for a week. While there I connected to the hospital's wifi. what Vista (and XP for that matter) uses for name resolution when on a small p2p workgroup? With no domain or server running DNS and no longer able to run Netbios on the pc. With IP installed I can ping by IP address but what exactly is allowing me to ping by machine name?

From my point of knowledge, there is only a limitation of 10 concurrent incomming connections. There is no limitation on the number of members in a workgroup.I know, a workgroup with above 20 clients for file- and printsharing makes no sence, but is there a limitation?

My Vista computer is a member of WORKGROUP but isn't networking with WORKGROUP properly, although it connects properly over WiFi to the internet.First, in Explorer, there is a entry named Network (not My Network Places, etc.) that shows only this computer and no entry for WORKGROUP or for the other computers. Also, WORKGROUP is present but is empty (except for this computer) in View Computers and Devices. However, Full Map View shows the other computers and they can be opened with \computername and seen on Net View IP. So, how do I make those computers show up in explorer or View Computers or in some other accessible place? Also, the Vista computer is not visible from the other computers. If searched for with \computername, a error message says "computername is not accessible. You might not have permission ..." Net View IP reports "System Error 5. Access is denied."
All computers are using the WORKGROUP name. Same results with all firewalls disabled. Files are being shared. Private Network, Network discovery On, File sharing On Public Folder sharing On, Password protected sharing off, Media Sharing On, WINS NetBios setting Default. The XP computers are running Link-Layer and NW Link NetBios.
Using HP Photosmart 7960 as shared printer off of XP Pro SP2 machine. Works great for the other XP machines that share it. Tried to connect (via network share) my (new) 64Bit Vista Home Premium box to this printer. Of course, it asked for the Vista printer drivers, which do exist. So, the challenge - the drivers won't install on the XP machine, as they are Vista drivers and error out (simple message saying wrong OS). Installed the drivers on the Vista machine, which should solve the problem...it didn't. Went thru both HP directories (under x86 programs) looking for the *.inf files and according to Vista, none of them are correct.

Under the Control Panels | System |Advanced system settings under the Computer Name tab you can view the Workgroup Name and of course modify. I understand the importance of having the Workgroup Name consistent between my XP and Vista computers. Should the Network Name be the same as the Workgroup Name? Does the Network Name have any function in network connections?

I have been sending files to Thailand under a native format of *.LZH Both of us read the files as automatically changed to *.RAR under XP which we both had. Now my colleague has bought a Vista laptop, the *.RAR files cannot be opened. Is winrar free anywhere? any pointers or "heads up" regarding this?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy OS is V-home premium 64bit. I've owned this Dell for about 3 weeks and have never been able to open Media Center. When clicked, I get this error message:
C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727mscorwks.dll could not be loaded. I had a Dell Tech log into my computer to find "patches," etc. To no avail. His only advice was to restore back to new.
By the way, opening ehshell.exe gives me the exact same message. I thought I had found the correct patch re: framework applications in the Win Knowledge Base. After a complex set of downloads I finally ended up with the same error message. Is there something I can do short of full restore?
On Monday morning, as usual checking mail in office using windows mail, all attachment was able to open (through the paper clip icon or save into other location.
Then after lunch, all type of attachment (picture, excel, words, pdf.) can not be open through the paper clip icon. Then i try to save it and open again, these message pop up "there was an error saving one or more of the attachments. Please check your free disk space and try again", i can't safe the attachment.
If forwarded to other people, it's ok, open and view as normal.
Another thing I encounter, i can't open web based email attachment as well,
since I'd forward (to try) the office attachment mail to my personal account.
I try to save it, the saving process as usual, but when saving is done, the file was not saved at all.

it all started after i downloaded a file and started to install it. first thing that happened was i got an error message saying g.exe couldn't be opened. so i closed it and thought it was funky for it to happen at the time. i also didn;t think it was a file of importance and we all know how windows is. so i figured a restart n i would be ok. i restarted and i got a rundll error C:/windows/system32/ " the specified module could not be found" ( opnnnoMd.dll ) i did find the file after some searching in the syswow64 folder. and it had been modified around the same time i had the error of g.exe...so i did some searching bout g.exe and found it could be a virus.... i have norton ran an update and scan...found nothing

I have a Privacy problem with Vista???s list of recently opened files. I have already unchecked the box to Store and display a list of recently opened files in Start Menu, and Windows has stopped showing these files on my desktop. However, my sensitive filenames still exist in the Vista search folders, here-> Users/myname/Searches/Recent....).
So I deleted all of the (Recent....) folders in the Searches folder. That seemed to fix part of the problem. However, my sensitive filenames still exist in the specific Vista search folder named Indexed Locations?. I tried rebuilding the search index but these filenames still persist, even in the newly rebuilt index. The actual files exist on a disk that is NOT INCLUDED in indexing. They seem to be included because they are recent, and not because they are being indexed........
I'm using the Windows Mail that came with Vista Home Premium (Sp1). How does one increase the border between windows in Mail? The thickness of the border seems to be one or two pixels wide and it's a real pain to zero in on the correct place to resize a window. If this is a common question that has already been answered, forgive me.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that whenever I transfer image files from my digicam to my portable hard disk, some files get broken. This does not happen when I transfer the image files to the local hard disk. What I do is transfer the files directly from my memory card to my portable hard disk since I don't have my cable right now.
I tried using other image viewers such as ACDSee and XnView but still, the files can't be opened. I've also tried changing my portable hard disk from a Logitec to an I-O Data but still, the same problem persists. I tried saving the files first on the local hard disk and then moving them to the portable hard disk but to no avail.
At times a Vista laptop cannot save opened files to the Vista desktop. It freezes the word processor we use. The desktop will always freeze on shutdown and the amount of memory used often drops by a hundred MDs or more. After weeks of documenting when this happened, we discovered that it seems to happen on days we do a backup. We use Robocopy to backup. there is a patch on the MS website we are trying, but does anyone have any more information about problems with Robocopy?

View 3 Replies View RelatedToday i recieved a USB to Playstation 2 Adapter that i ordered from eBay, so i ran upstairs, plugged it in and checked game controllers to make sure it was there, and it was. So i plugged in my Logitech Cordless Action controller and the lights flashed and the receiver flashed so i assumed it was connected. Opened up X-plane and tested it out and nothing, did a bit of googleing and found a driver/program for the adapter, installed it and still nothing. Im wondering if it is because the controller i am using is wireless, but if it worked on my Playstation then it should work with this adapter, right? I hope this can be sorted as the Vista Forum has sorted lots of my problems out before.

Since that time I am not able to search for mails using Vista Search. If Windows Mail is configured as standard mail application (has every standard) mails can be found, but not opened. An error message is displayed which tells me, that no standard mail client is available (in German: "Es ist kein standardm=E4=DFiger E-Mail-Client vorhanden, oder der aktuelle E-Mail-Client kann die Messaginganforderung nicht erf=FCllen..."). Then I configured Outlook as my standard mail client, which didn't solve my issue, because the message is not displayed any more, but the mail cann't be opened.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI applied this to fix the missing clear recent list problem in start menu: "Clear Recent Items List" option missing when you right-click on the Recent folder However, the problem returns frequently and the option is missing again. I also have this other problem where every time I reboot, the "store and display recently opened files" is unchecked and therefore the feature does not show up in the start menu. I have to re-check it everytime after a reboot. This is very annoying. Note: this problem was always happening prior to installing both Wise software. Also, I have always used CCleaner without such problems, for over 2 years. On a side note, it seems the problem *may* have started around the time I installed SP1.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEach time I start Windows Mail again, ALL my (150 or so!) folders and subfolders are opened (unfolded)!!! This drives me crazy... Apparently, this does not happen when I close my folders, close Windows Mail and start it again, but only when the system is restarted (not set into sleeping state with Windows Mail staying open, but really restarted). I have even unchecked the option to automatically open the folders with unread messages, though I would like this one to work like in OE, but it did not suppress the problem. I cannot find another option to NOT develop the folders... 99% of my messages were imported from OE, if it may be a clue...
